Yaos Being Mischievous:

Hearing what appears to be a long running dispute, Yaos inclines her head and thinks a moment, then says:-

"I am new to the area, but on the face of it Lady Emelia would seem to be correct. Further, there may be a factor you have not considered, learned Varrin. The operations of the Order of the Cypher are clandestine by their nature and I am certain they are most adept at their tasks. Perhaps that Order is larger than you believe it to be, and operating in Macini in greater numbers than you suspect."

Mighty Mage Szomniaro:

Magnius nods sagely, and tips the man a gold coin. "Thank you my friend, you have given a lot to think on. Perhaps I will call on you again later, but for now, I must go meet up with my companions."

He then makes his way back to the castle, walking the halls, giving some thought to what the chandler revealed about Szomniaro. If the man was correct, the mage was likely to be a powerful ally.

Emilia Spartaco-Aranovitch
Count Vocaturo's younger sister, married to Sabino Aranovitch

.

Lady Emilia shows an odd:
grin as she considers the implications of Yaos' statement. The thought that there could be HellKnights undercover all over Cheliax is startling, and she quickly comes to the internal conclusion that further thought on her part is unnecessary.

The divination Wizard, on the other hand, leans back with a more queer look indicating, yes, he has thought of this.

Yaos Continues the Dialogue:
Observing the faces of the pair to who she is talking, Yais continues with "Varrin, you are obviously most interested in the Hellknights. Tell me, is this purely the result of admiration, or does your interest have it's origin elsewhere? Further, you think Cheliax would be better served if there were more of them. What sort of numbers do you think would be best for our nation? And why?"

Back in Castle Spartaco, the day's business winds on -- routine cleaning and dusting of the various halls, fresh rushes being laid after soiled ones are swept away, cooks preparing evening meals, and a handful of county residents awaiting in a foyer their opportunity to be heard by their Count, The Lion of Justice, Vocaturo Spartaco.

Alfred Ensbridge and Lord Magnius arrive separately but learn of each other's arrival soon enough. As do they hear that their ally, Lady Yaos, is in a small hall with Lady Emilia Spartaco-Aranovitch and the castle divination-wizard, Varrin.

Other basic inquiries reveal that Countess-Consort Olivia Spartaco is with Gheradescci County's High Priest of Asmodeus, Zarten the Bastard, illegitimately of House Salisfer, one of the most powerful Houses in the Archduchy.

Additionally, Baroness Stella Spartaco is with the Castle wizard, Szomniaro, in his tower.

Count Vocaturo Spartaco is apparently by himself in one of his studies.

And finally, Lord Sabino Aranovitch is with Dagreb of Moloch and a few select guards preparing to depart back to Corentyn.

Varrin
Divination Wizard for Count Vocaturo Spartaco

.

Varrin looks at 'The Red Widow' before:
speaking, "Indeed you are right to keep the name 'Battori' even after your husband's demise; you seem to fit the personality perfectly with your catty bluntness." He raises his glass of wine in salute, nodding with appropriate deferment to your station and smiling in appreciation of you open questions.

"I'm not actually interested in HellKnights, as you suggest Lady, I am interested in intelligence gathering. And counter-intelligence. And the Orders of HellKnights are an excellent way to increase our network of information. Whether they be from the Order of the Gate or Cipher. As for numbers, well, as long as they are legitimately worthy of earning their HellKnight Armor, the number may not matter. I would only be concerned if, in an effort to increase the numbers, the qualifications and training were lessened."

Yaos in Reply:

Yaos raises her glass in turn and smiles, thus covering her taking a moment to consider if "catty bluntness" is an insult or complement before deciding it is the latter and replying:-

"I am not so skilled in intelligence gathering as you Varrin. But I agree the HellKnights are an important asset and weapon of Chelliax, and their standards and traditions need to be maintained."

Let fate decide:

1d4 ⇒ 3

After speaking to a few servants, Magnius learns that Szomniaro is in his tower, apparently with Baroness Stella. He decides to make his way there, politely announcing his presence and waits to be acknowledged.

Stella Spartaco
Baroness of Varni in Gheradescci County

.

Ah, Lord Magnius:
"May I introduce Szomniaro, the Count's wizard. He is coaching me on the arcane energies I inherently carry."

Baroness Stella Spartaco is sweating profusely, though her breathing is not heavy. There are burn marks upon her fingertips that will heal soon enough. And her light brown eyes have a sheen, almost a glow of intensity, that makes them seem both beautiful and deadly.

It is clear that she has the charisma and bloodline to greatly develop her sorcery, given time. The advice and coaching and just raw intelligence from Szomniaro will no doubt dramatically enhance her rise in arcane might. Eventually.

Szomniaro
Castle Wizard for Count Vocaturo Spartaco

.

Szomniaro's tower in Castle Spartaco has three:
levels. The first, which Magnius entered upon a nod and knock from his door guard (a common House soldier), has five rooms separated only by curtain-beads. The center is obviously a waiting room; the others are obscured. The spiral staircase leads to the second level in which both the Wizard and Baroness currently stand. The entirety of the room seems to be a lab with a small bookshelf and cabinet for literature and spell components on one wall, and an unremarkable summoning circle in the center.

Szomniaro himself is younger than one may expect, late twenties or early thirties, with long blonde hair and crystal blue eyes. On his magically enchanted belt underneath his magically enchanted cloak and robe are holstered three wands. And every article of jewelry on his person verily radiates with arcane energy.

He stands confident and rigid, a cliche of a castle wizard.

At the Baroness' introduction he nods, but without extending an arm or hand in greeting, "I have heard much of you and your companion The Red Widow, allow me to give my own welcome to Gheradescci County."

And assuming you are here for the Baroness -- as you are not a wizard and already know her, Szomniaro steps back, allowing you your audience with Stella Spartaco.

A stairwell goes up to the third level of Szomniaro's tower,
obviously to his private bedroom.

Male Human Investigator 3/Inquisitor 5

Magnius Bows:

Politely in greeting to both the wizard and Stella. "Well met, and thank you for the greeting. I had actually come to speak with you, Master Wizard, but since you have company, I can come back later."

Szomniaro
Castle Wizard for Count Vocaturo Spartaco

.

Thinking it odd but not too out of place Szomniaro nodds:
"We will be but a few minutes longer, Lord Magnius. Baroness Stella has achieved much, today, learning and mustering the arcane energy in her blood." The wizard of House Spartaco gestures with respect to his Patron's niece. "She will one day be a powerful asset in Sorcery for her House."

Szomniaro, behind his crystal-cold blue eyes and stark blonde hair, talks the Baroness through a meditation of 'cooling-down' after all the mental exercises and arcane concentration she's been grinding through. The book he's reading from, outlining the methodology of sorcery, is clearly written by wizards trying to get a handle on bloodline magic. But academic though it be, any young Sorcerer would still benefit.

A few minutes later, the Wizard and Baroness finish and Szomniaro turns his attention to the other lord in his chamber, and nods in invitation for Magnius to continue.

Baroness Stella Spartaco stays, curious and with no regard for your privacy.

Emilia Spartaco-Aranovitch
Count Vocaturo's younger sister, married to Sabino Aranovitch

.

Yet again bored with talk of:
political philosophy and HellKnight logistical theory and un-fun technical minutiae, Lady Emilia yawns and allows her old mentor, Varrin, to continue his monotonous argument with The Red Widow.

For her part, Lady Emilia Spartaco-Aranovitch is just pleased that, however it's happening, House Spartaco is growing in power and has allied itself with a Battori and an Arvanxi.

Varrin
Divination Wizard for Count Vocaturo Spartaco

.

Impressed with Yaos' insight and humor:
Varrin continues the dialog about HellKnight logistical theory and political philosophy and etc., and etc. -- obviously he can go on for hours, as Count Vocaturo's younger sister Lady Emilia clearly can attest.

Yet he likes Yaos on a different level as well. There is a respect, even an admiration beginning to show from the old Divination Wizard, to the Red Widow. When she speaks, he listens with deference as though a near equal mind is conversing with him.

Alfred Ensbridge
Halfling Bard

.

After getting information on where his 'masters' are in the Castle upon his return, Alfred writes a quick note and brings it, in turn, to both Yaos and Magnius. Politely interrupting your conversations, he shows it, and excusing himself, privately burns the letter with magic lest a maidservant find it:

I plan on staying in Spartaco to continue our efforts here. I feel there is much that can be done.

I wish you well in Macini, hunting down Bellflower Agents and finding an angle to exploit for the benefit of House Spartaco -- and us.

One question remains, do you want the girl Ennahvail to remain with me or continue with you? She can stay her and develop under my guidance; I think she can become a valuable asset as a Vigilante. Or she can go with you to Macini and assist you there to her eventual growth.

Be assured that in the future, if you need me for a task, I will be here -- or will move to a new city upon your direction.

Szomniaro
Castle Wizard for Count Vocaturo Spartaco

.

Awaiting your audience with Szomniaro in his chambers:
watching him work with Baroness Stella, you reflect on some of the observations Jtom Chandler made about the viking wizard. You begin to interpret the commoner's superficial observations on a deeper level.

Coming to the conclusions that more than anything, Szomniaro wants to continue to grow in arcane might, and use that to advance his station in the political machinations of Cheliax -- that he is loyal to Count Vocaturo probably so long as House Spartaco has potential for more power -- that Szomniaro will strive to help Count Vocaturo Spartaco so the House gains influence, from minor House to a major player such as Charthagnion or Phandros or Drovenge or Arvanxi. He will only look to leave House Spartaco if it looks like the House is getting weaker -- and even then, it's your impression, based on a few of the chandler's offhand remarks about Szomniaro, that the wizard wouldn't want to burn bridges to House Spartaco or betray the Count, but find a way to move up while still keeping a good relationship with his former Patron.

Now, watching him with young Baroness Stella and await your audience with him, you wonder how to use that to your advantage.

Male Human Investigator 3/Inquisitor 5

Magnius explains:
why he's there. "I'll cut to the chase. I've heard your the most powerful mage in residence in Castle Spartaco. My companions and I seek the location of the Bellflower agents who assassinated the Baroness' fiancee. If you could help us locate them, or others who could lead us to them, I would be most appreciative."

Szomniaro
Castle Wizard for Count Vocaturo Spartaco

.

All I can do is:
"repeat what Varrin, the Divination Wizard, told Baron Valsecchi when he was assigned to hunt them down -- other than going to the scene of the crime and performing divination spells or tracking, your best bet is to go to a larger city in the Archduchy, Corentyn or Macini or Westcrown or Hinji, and try to make contact and infiltrate them then."

Male Human Investigator 3/Inquisitor 5

Thanks:
"For confirming what we were likely going to do. I believe we'll head to Westcrown, as that's where I'm from. I have some contacts there that might be able to help us."

He turns to Stella "When you've got some free time, I would like to talk to you more about something we mentioned on the way here. Preferably before we leave for Westcrown. "

Stella Spartaco
Baroness of Varni in Gheradescci County

.

Interested in your request:
Baroness Stella nods and the two of you depart Szomniaro's chamber together.

"I must say, you and the Red Widow are quite intriguing. I am glad my little Barony has enough gold to draw such eyes as yours. Speak."

Emilia Spartaco-Aranovitch
Count Vocaturo's younger sister, wed to Sabino Aranovitch

.

Taking advantage of a lull in:
Varrin's droning proselytizing and Yaos' clever ripostes, Lady Emilia interrupts. "Lady Yaos, tell me, now that you and the Lord Arvanxi are here in my brother's County, what ever shall you be doing for House Spartaco?" Your own observations of Lady Emilia's speech patterns and comments confirm the rumors that, though she may try, she is not so clever as to use guile or subtlety -- or innuendo.

While Countess Olivia Spartaco is known for her adroitness and exhaustive background in political gossip between the Houses, but not ruthless, cold-blooded ambition .... And while Vidame Carnacella Spartaco has ruthless, cold-blooded ambition and a firm handle on political gossip, but a non-noble Tiefling bloodline and a mere military commander for a husband .... While Baroness Stella only has inexperience and still some immaturity keeping her from fully being as sharp and ruthless as her mother the Vidame and as knowledgeable as her aunt the Countess -- Lady Emilia Spartaco-Aranovitch, youngest of the siblings Mogranzini, Vocaturo, and Emilia Spartaco, has neither understanding of court intrigue and the minutiae of clever discourse, nor the calculating, hungry manipulating of a true Machiavellian Devil.

She has attempted to play the game. She has used the table conversation to probe the Red Widow's poker hand without the ability to read a poker face -- or more importantly, hold a stoic poker face of her own. She is a child in understanding playing with adults. Adult sharks.

Unless, unless, it is all a ruse, a façade to make the other nobles take her less seriously.

She asked you, trying to be coy, why you're here and what your plans are with House Spartaco. But she has no acumen for reading your answer, no gauge to judge your reaction, no guile to hide her ignorance. "The House is on the move, you know. Even in Corentyn where my Lord Husband and I now live, they speak of Spartaco."

Male Human Investigator 3/Inquisitor 5

Magnius directs:

Their path to his chambers(if he doesn't have his own, he'll ask Stella to go to hers' for the sake of privacy). Once they make their way *someplace* private, he explains what he was alluding to. "We have a folio that has several letters that I believe you can use to exploit several 'interesting situations'. As this information was apparently supposed to be a sort of dowry for you, I see no reason to keep them to ourselves."

Yaos takes a sip of wine to cover taking a moment to think about how to reply to Emilia. Is this lady something of an innocent, as she appears, or a much more dangerous creature playing the innocent? is the question resonating in her mind. Now Varrin is easier to read and to win over.

"There are a number of factors that lead me to this part of our country my lady. Some having nothing to do with the people here, like wanting to be away from places evoking painful memories following my husband's death.
But as you say, House Spartaco is on the move. It has a steady source of wealth, and a lot of it, which is always significant. I am not surprised that House Spartaco is spoken of in Coretyn, what is said of your house there?"
replies the Red Widow after some thought.

Emilia Spartaco-Aranovitch
Count Vocaturo's younger sister, wed to Sabino Aranovitch

.

Lady Emilia begins telling Yaos of the:
Houses' Lords and Ladies of Corentyn. Obviously House Charthagnion and ArchHeathen Kettermaul (ArchDuke of Longmarch) is the greatest, but Houses Oberigo, Phandros, Tilernos and Drovenge are the other 'Big Four' with a strong presence in Corentyn. And several minor Houses: Aulamaxa, Mhartis, Cemaine, Chard, Nymmis, Ulvauno, Atenaar, Mironeth, Ici, Chillarth, Imvius and Emilia's House-by-marriage, Aranovitch, all vie for the Houses under which they serve -- and themselves.

In no time at all Yaos discerns both how entangled noble politicking is in Corentyn and, more importantly, that it is Lady Emilia who talks about House Spartaco to the other Houses, not that the other Houses talk about House Spartaco.

As you consider Lady Emilia's long-winded explanation to your query, you figure the other Houses of Corentyn either A) Don't have enough confidence (or fear) in Spartaco considering the none-too-bright source from which the information came to them, or B) If they have gotten a sense that Emilia is more crafty than she lets on, they just aren't aware of House Spartaco's potential.

Stella Spartaco
Baroness of Varni in Gheradescci County

.

Looking at the letters:
Baroness Stella's eyes widen and then gleam with naked, wicked ambition.

"This one is of Baroness Sandrina Salisfer and ParaCount Rand Aulamaxa -- they're having an affair! And those two Houses are enemies. This is incredible." She thinks it through. "We could utterly destroy Baroness Sandrina Salisfer with this -- or we could blackmail her!" Stella Spartaco is quite impressed.

"And this one gives evidence that the Mayor of Westpool is actively working against Queen Abrogail Thrune, killing her engineers and sabotaging her infrastructure programs." The damning letter is both astounding and terrifying. Stella is scared. "'Oh Asmodeus Law!' -- Thrune could kill us for not telling her." But then another thought occurs to her. "This belonged to Francesco Phandros; we can tell Thrune that Phandros had this letter and didn't tell House Thrune. This could be a powerful blow to Phandros!

"What is this third letter, ....An Admiral in the Chlaxian Navy is conspiring with Andoran criminals?! ....Incredible."

....Looking back at Lord Magnius with new respect and awed gratitude, Baroness Stella is almost speechless.

"You could have kept these for yourselves." It is a statement to herself; she's thinking it all out. "You gave this to us, to Spartaco. ...To me. You Are here to support House Spartaco."

Of all the thoughts going through the young lady's mind, ambition and conspiracy and power, the one thing that does not occur to her to say on behalf of House Spartaco to Magnius and Yaos, is "Thank You." Perhaps it is youthfulness or just shock; perhaps it is a sentiment that eludes most Chelaxian nobles when it is actually sincere -- as though 'thanks' are only spoken out of courtly courtesy, or as part of a lie in a conspiracy against one's "ally." But in this case, when it is sincere, those who worship devils can't express gratitude.

Male Human Investigator 3/Inquisitor 5

Magnius smiles:
At Stella and shrugs. "There's no real point in our keeping the letters, and they were intended for you after all. Sure, we could benefit from them ourselves, but I believe there is much more to be gained for all if not only Spartaco as a whole, but you specifically grow in power and influence. Allying with you is the most beneficial use of those letters." He says this last in such a way that she's not entirely certain he means her or her house when he said 'you'.

"Fascinating Lady Emilia. The situation in Coretyn, so complex, so dangerous, yet you seem to know it well and negotiate through it with composure." replies Yaos, maintaining eye contact with Emilia and nodding attentively.

Yaos continues to flatter Emilia subtly and draw as much information about the Houses and other political factors in Coretyn.

Diplomacy: 1d20 + 12 ⇒ (7) + 12 = 19

Emilia Spartaco-Aranovitch
Count Vocaturo's younger sister, wed to Sabino Aranovitch

.

Yaos feels confident, after further:
conversation with Lady Emilia, that the woman would make for a good contact in Corentyn as her and Magnius become more ingratiated to House Spartaco. You figure that in the future -- assuming your standing with House Spartaco continues to rise -- that you can count on Lady Emilia Spartaco-Aranovitch to provide all the latest political gossip among the various Houses active in Corentyn. ....Whether Lady Emilia is a naive dilettante or a brilliant spy is still unknown.

But one thing seems clear -- Lady Emilia Spartaco-Aranovitch is still pro-Spartaco. Joining House Aranovitch has not made her consider herself an Aranovitch first.

Baroness Stella Spartaco is clearly now allied with both Magnius and The Red Widow. Yaos is quickly becoming a close friend (and peer) and Lord Magnius is a conspiratorial source of obvious professional, political power.

You have her all wrapped-up as a major ally in House Spartaco -- with potential for much more growth in the House. And as Spartaco gains in power, so will you.

Having built a foundation of good will in Gheradescci County with House Spartaco-- making a strong ally in the young Baroness Stella Spartaco, making an ally in the perhaps flighty Lady Emilia Spartaco-Aranovitch, and established Alfred Ensbridge and Ennahvail as spies or agents for use later.

What remains is to travel to Westcrown, former capital of Cheliax, in order to track down members of the Bellflower Network so as to hunt down the ones who assassinated Francesco Phandros.

Then either find an opportunity to exploit one of the lords or ladies in Westcrown for House Spartaco -- or choose an easier target city, such as Macini.

The journey to Westcrown, back across the swath of wilderness that marks this stretch of Longmarch ArchDuchy, is remarkably uneventful. For a dozen miles or so a leopard tracks you from a distance of a thousand yards, perhaps sating some feline curiosity, perhaps marking your trek for some Ranger or Druid. A day or so later, light Spring rains make keeping yourselves clean easier, while keeping yourselves dry is more difficult. The gentle showers seem to last the rest of the trip. Raccoons suspiciously watch you each night and during the day you startle an occasional deer or small black bear, who flee from you back into the deep forests of the day.

Early afternoon before your final approach into the Twilight City, the Spring showers cease. Looking at the hazy skyline of Westcrown from eighteen miles out, the shadows of night seem to slumber in the clouds hanging above the city, a few hours before they awake to descend upon their victim, Westcrown.

It is early evening when you arrive.

W E S T C R O W N
The Twilight City

.

The northwest curve of Westcrown, the Parego Dospera in her decaying, half-abandoned state, is the first District that comes clearly into view. It's a void that marks this district of decay and the forgotten. Here, the homeless of Westcrown sleep in the darkness and their own isolation.

Two things may interest you in Parego Dospera, the wandering Dusk Market where illicit goods and services are sold on the Black Market, each night at a different location, and of course the slave-market of Westcrown, near the bottom of Parego Dospera. Perhaps you can make contact with the Bellflower Network in the Dusk Market – if you can find it. Or perhaps you can loiter near Pleatra, the slave market, hoping to observe a Bellflower scout or spy, as he or she gathers information for a later Freedom-Raid.

East of mostly-empty Parego Dospera, the nobility of Westcrown reside in their old-money mansions on the long island Parego Regicona, that splits the Adivian River at her mouth, while her mighty waters spew out into the Inner Sea. Cut by steep canals the island district may remind you more of a district of palatial castles separated by moats – but it is afterall, just a city district.

South of Pleatra in Parego Dospera begins the Westcrown peninsula, jutting out into the Inner Sea and blanketed in wispy fog. Here in Parego Spera, the Twilight City lives. The noise from the busy port is heard even from where you stand a thousand yards from the northwest curve that marks Parego Dospera. But schools and merchants and businesses and homes and markets and city-works and, of course, the Asmodeus Curch and a garrison of HellKnights, Order of the Rack, all stand in close quarters in Parego Spera, looking over their shoulders suspiciously – and quietly – lest one’s loyalty to Thrune or fervor for Asmodeus come under question.

And all around her is shadow.

Yaos has, as always when faced with any kind of adversity, tried hard to show no sign of inconvenience or discomfort during the journey.

Upon arrival in Westcrown, Yaos, astride her huge pale horse named Hell, is tired and in need of a bath and but showing no sign of this. Yaos is quietly watchful in the dark streets, having Red Wing and Pale Wing keep alert also. She turns to Magnius and asks "Are you familiar with this town Magnius? I know you have family here, should we approach them for lodgings or seek an inn. I will defer to your local knowledge, but I would normally seek lodgings soon, wandering a strange city after dark is courting danger."

Magnius can use an Arvanxi town-house or condo for a couple days without incurring any ire or financial debt from his House. This would be on the peninsula, the 'Parego Spera' where 95% of Westcrown lives and works.

He could also attempt to go to a manor in the Arvanxi complex on the island, 'Parego Regicona,' but that would involve some information trading with other Arvanxi nobles.

Think of it like this, it's easy to go to one of the little town houses House Arvanxi owns in Parego Spera under-the-radar and stay a few days. But if you go to the island from where the nobility run their Houses, Parego Regicona, ranking members of House Arvanxi are gonna be up in your business and want to know what's going on. This is not necessarily a problem -- you can certainly make friendly contacts with Arvanxi nobles here, like you did at Castle Spartaco and Gheradescci County, it's up to you completely.
.
.
.
.
Or, if you want to guarantee to stay under-the-radar this trip to Westcrown, you can stay in an abandoned building on the northwest curve of Westcrown, the Parego Dospera. There are plenty of dilapidated, crumbling and empty facades from which you can choose to squat for a few days. Bed bugs and lice included.

Parego Dospera; Westcrown:
northwest corner: half abandoned, poor, deteriorated

.

Coming into Westcrown near the time of twilight, you observe the sad, even hopeless faces of the forlorn citizens unable to afford housing in the peninsula. They busily get ready for the night as you hurriedly make your way to the peninsula that has banished them, the Parego Spera.

Some of them stand out. The first is an apparently homeless woman, tall and bulky with layers upon layers of tattered and threadbare cloaks and robes and shawls. She mutters to herself as she walks purposely, determinedly, through the empty alleys and cobbled streets, ignoring and being ignored by others. Dead rats and mice and pigeons hang from twine tied to her various belts. A ring on one of her fingers, even seen from a distance, is most likely magically enchanted. In various separate moments, large caracal cats, all gray-coated, approach her with their hunting prizes, more dead rats. She takes their dead rats and fastens them to her belts with twine, giving her twenty-five pound cats a share of the food from time to time. And she walks the cobbled streets and alleys of the Parego Dospera, less afraid of the growing shadows than the others.

After the cat-lady you see a raker, having just finished his job raking garbages and filth from the peninsula for his few copper pieces/per day, hurrying back into Parego Dospera, to a mostly burned out abandoned building whose chimney and foundation are still intact. A shanty of a wall-unit has been lashed together around the chimney, and this is where the man enters, to sleep the night in his bed inside an old fireplace.

Adjacent to the raker's burnt-out home two children, orphans likely, begin lighting candles and broken lanterns in their adopted home, a looted and broken temple with a missing north-facing wall and no remnant of any deity left whatsoever. The children are small, aged ten or eleven, but not innocent. They have the cold look of predators and the deliberate movement of the experienced. Lighting their few candles and campfires, though, they try to fight the encroaching shadows before they sleep.

Another block away you see a cluster of Halflings climbing into a rare three story building and, through a gaping hole in an upper-floor wall, see them making their way upstairs, likely to sleep for the night.

Finally, as you approach the southern edge of the Parego Dospera and cross a canal entering the still living Parego Spera, you see a mixed pair entering their own home, some other formerly abandoned building. They seem androgynous: a Gnome in drab, colorless garb and a Wayang, whose grin though plastered to its face, reveals no joy or humor, or even contentment. Trying in vain to shutter and close all the various openings to their home, you observe the androgynous Gnome kiss the androgynous Wayang's cheek the way a tired and hopeless wife kisses her tired and hopeless husband before bed. From an acute angle in a hole in the building, you can still see them as they cuddle together prone, sleeping until the break of day.

Parego Spera; Westcrown:
peninsula: the ‘living’ Westcrown

.

Moving briskly in the ever quickening conclusion to the ephemeral twilight, you make your way to the Arvanxi condo that Magnius is certain of which is not currently being used. It’s in the middle of the peninsula, very near the river-side -- the bottom floor of which is a dentist office.

It is the light of the Parego Spera that stands out from the Parego Dospera; whereas the forlorn of the north corner try to create as much light as they can by night, artificial, man-made light is everywhere on the peninsula. Every building, every street corner, every person hurriedly walking home, has some form of light to fend off the darkening shadows of The Twilight City.

Passing an opulent opera house as it regurgitates its cacophonous audience at the performance's conclusion, you witness the mood of Westcrown at the beginning of night. First, the opera patrons are boisterous and talkative, huddled together exiting through the bottlenecking entrance. Then, as they fan-out going their various ways home, with less light and less noise and less cover from other people – they grow more furtive, and more quiet. Their pace quickens as their talk lessens.

One man stands out, a Phandros by the look of his angled cheek-bones and hair color and eyes. He does not show any heraldry of House Phandros, no amulet or badge of office. Perhaps he is a bastard or has been excommunicated by the patron, Marcus Phandros. But the man remains loud, cocky in the night, as he regales to his entourage his opinions, both positive and negative, of the opera they just heard.

Another individual stands out, a female Tielfing forty yards from the Phandros bastard with her own retinue. Unlike so many of her peers in Westcrown, her evening gown is loud and garish. She walks violently erect, as though she were Queen Abrogail herself. And she carries a platinum rod and bejeweled handbag. Her sycophants follow her, vying to impress her with their insight into the opera, unafraid of the Shadows so long as they remain in the Tiefling’s presence.

A few blocks closer to your destination, crossing a few more shallow canals, you pass by a grand temple of Asmodeus, also disgorging its disciples into the street after the night’s sermon has run especially late. The crowd leaves in silence, pondering the profound words of Hell and Law and Her Infernal Majestrix Abrogail Thrune, as proselytized by one of Westcrown’s fine Priests this evening.

One couple stands out. Ranking members in the hierarchy of House Oberigo, Lord and Lady Toran and Tanith Oberigo lead their cadre in pious silence to a wider canal, one arched with a grand Pegasus Bridge, whereupon they board a wealthy boat and head back to their mansion on the island, Parego Regicona.

A moment later you pass a lone HellKnight from the Order of the Rack striding past the colossal statue of Aroden that still stands proud in Westcrown. The HellKnight, having no book-burnings to execute at present, is apparently headed in the direction of the Gargling Gargoyle, to make sure patrons at the tavern are departing for home to obey the lawful curfew.

Eventually, as night descends in full, you come to the cul-de-sac with the Arvanxi condo. You see the dentist shop ahead of you, and the cast-iron spiral staircase outside of it leading to the second floor and the darkened apartment that will serve as your temporary base of operations here in Westcrown. Sharing the cobbled circle with the dentist office is a bath house, a brazier foundry, a clock-maker's workshop, and a lapidary showroom. A linkboy is just finishing lighting even more torches on this street as you approach and he looks as though he is relieved that this is the last area of torches he must make sure are still lit before heading to the safety of his own home.

From the higher vantage point of the staircase leading to the Arvani apartments, you can see out in the river one final fishing boat, having just braved the dark waters for one more hour to bring in a good haul, the boat is now docking on the Parego Spera wharf, only forty feet away. The handful of fisherman are panickingly tying the boat down and rushing to finish offloading their catch to some dock-hands you can’t see from your angle.

It’s the captain that catches your attention. Completely unafraid of the dark, the bold man strolls off his boat with the authority of significant personal power. His glossy black breastplate, odd for a man who works in water, appears to have magical enchantments, as do many other accouterments on his person. Why such an accomplished man would be captaining a small fishing boat instead of a warship in Cheliax’s navy is a mystery, for certainly that is what he is trained to do. But here he is in Westcrown, fishing with commoners until the sun has already set. Of course, as you look at the scene again, a clue comes forth. The name of the fishing boat, 'Captain Black’s 4th’ is neither clever nor interesting and reveals a complete lack of imagination from the captain who named her. Perhaps Cpt. Black, though a powerful seaman, has not the intelligence to wade through the political waters of Cheliax, and is doomed to live the rest of his life as a grossly overqualified fisherman.

Inside, the Arvanxi condo is dark, cold, mostly unfurnished. But un-curtained windows reveal Westcrown on all four sides.

Male Human Investigator 3/Inquisitor 5

Magnius makes mental note of several of those they pass by. The old lady is certainly interesting, and makes him wish he had Alfred with them.

The group of halflings are of obvious potential. He mentions to Yaos that he'll attempt to speak with them tomorrow.

The member of House Phandros is of particular interest, especially since it seems he could be on the outs with his house.

The tiefling noble lady could be of use, as they are usually treated poorly in most of Cheliax. This one seems to be somebody of at least some import.

While the others are all also noteworthy, he wants to do his best to focus on a few to start.

Entering the Arvanxi condo, he turns to Yaos. "I think I'll go try and meet with that group of halflings tomorrow, posing as a sympathetic lord. Do you think you can try and talk to either the guy from House Phandros or the tiefling Lady?"

Yaos is all alert as she moves through Westcrown with Magnius, despite her fatigue wchich is noticeable despite her attempts to hide it. She reponds to Magnius's question with "I will try to talk to both, and perhaps the Captain of the fishing boat. He seems... like a lot more than a fisherman."

Upon reaching the condo Yaos feeds and washes her horse herself, as it sounds like there are no stable hands to do it, then goes immediately to bed.

The following morning Yaos will take a bath, at the condo or in the bath-house if that is easier, then go out seeking sign of the man from House Phandros, the colourul Tiefling lady and Captain Black.

Dice rolls to spot signs of the people sought or locate them by talking to others.

Kylian Phandros
Bastard, Socialite

.

The next day Yaos goes:
to the Bath adjacent to the Arvanxi condo, seeing the dentist who lives and works below the second-floor apartment as he talks on his porch to a customer, inviting the patient into his dentistry parlor.

The bath is reasonably high quality, though not made for nobility. But the plump, almost grandmotherly woman who runs it, based on her handling of Lady Yaos, has served nobles in her bath before. It takes almost no time at all for Yaos to get some information from Bellma about Kylian Phandros.

Born to Viscount Jeremiah Phandros and a mistress, Kylian was hidden from society for the first several years of his childhood -- Viscount Jeremiah's secret. Bellma, washing Yaos' clothes a few feet away from where the Red Widow bathes, clearly enjoys telling the story. She does it expertly, as though gossip and girl-banter is part of the atmosphere at the Bath House.

Viscount Jeremiah's wife died suddenly in uncertain circumstances. After a scandalously brief mourning period and briefer courtship, the Phandros Lord married his mistress and tried to get his son from her, Kylian Phandros, legitimized. But the Phandros patron, Marcus Phandros, refused to take the case to Her Infernal Majestrix. So Kylian Phandros is a bastard -- even though his father and mother are now married.

The young man is a socialite. He enjoys Westcrown high society and, since his Viscount father can't really give him too much in the way of money (Why put House resources into a bastard with no return on the investment?), Kylian Phandros has done an admirable job building up his own bit of personal power.

Yaos can likely meet Kylian Phandros during the day a small fencing arena a few blocks from the cul de sac. He often practices his parry and riposte with some other sportsmen.

Magnius returns to Parego Dospera:
in the day, determined to find the Halflings he saw the previous evening from which to gather information about the goings-on in Parego Dospera, and hopefully even a line to the Bellflower Network. His prey.

At the three story structure -- 'building' would seem to imply completeness -- only four Halflings remain. Three of which are children. But the fourth, Conna, is able to talk to the Inquisitor who looks somewhat like a HellKnight.

"We have our 'free papers,' Sir," Conna begins from a hole in the second floor wall, looking down in concern at Magnius as he approaches purposefully and enters a hole in the first floor wall. She obviously thinks he's here to evict them -- and doesn't sound as though she can resist, or escape with the three smaller Halflings in tow. Perhaps her best bet is to use the Law, something of which she has always been terrified, to get out of this dilemma. She has her 'free papers.'

Magnius, please attempt two Perception checks for me.

Yaos listens to Bellma's gossip, actually useful information, attentively, nodding and asking questions. After completing her bath, much needed after time on the road, Yaos thanks Bellma and leaves her a generous tip.

She then returns to the condo and dons suitable gear for fencing, slacks, clothing allowing movement and her +3 mithral shirt and heads to the fencing area frequented by Kylian Phandros intending to join in the fencing.

Yaos is no master fencer, lacking both proficiency with and ownership of a rapier. But she has a strength of 12, a dex of 16 and a BaB of +6, so she is decent I think. More to the point, she is absolutely stunning with a charisma of 26 which will hopefully have the males running around like puppies at obedience school.

Male Human Investigator 3/Inquisitor 5

Magnius turns on the charm:

And says "Ma'am, relax, I'm not here to apprehend you. I'm actually in need of some help. Not that long ago, I ran into some freedom fighters who ambushed the caravan I was traveling with. I was able to parley my release, and they let me go free. I'm in need of their assistance. Is there any chance you can point me in the right direction?"

With the charm of a Prince of Hell, Magnius:
begins to enchant Conna the Halfling, one story above him at the entryway.

Meanwhile, whispers from hiding places in the broken and looted structure squeak to Magnius' perceptive ears. "Are the traps set if he comes in?"
"It's the Bogeyman! The Bogeyman's come to eat us!"
"We should run; he's immune to our traps."
"The Bogeyman doesn't really exist; I think that man is a HellKnight. Now hush up."

And back above you, Conna continues your dialog over the voices of Halfling children hiding behind traps. "Need our help? I'm sorry Sir, I don't know any Freedom Fighters." Conna sounds sincere. She knows not to lie to a HellKnight.

Does Magnius enter? I have him right at the entryway, a five-foot-step in or out. But obviously it's up to you. He has no line of sight to Conna or the children whose whispers he's overheard.
But if he does back out of the entryway he may likely be able to look up and see Conna, behind cover.

Kylian Phandros
Socialite, Bastard of Viscount Jeremiah Phandros

.

It takes only an instant for Yaos:
to realize Bellma's little joke of omission. The Red Widow's plan of seduction will likely come to nothing in the small fencing arena.

Kylian Phandros is here, as are four friends, non-noble experts by their look. But they are not fencing despite the presence of masterwork rapiers and circles for fencing matches. The young men are talking and joking and enjoying wine and each other's company, leaning against a wall.

The joke is that these men are not attracted to women. And this small fencing arena is their hang-out.

As they look up at Yaos' entrance you are pleasantly surprised that the look Kylian Phandros gives you, eye to eye, is different than the looks of the four friends. It seems as though Kylian has twice the chances of finding a romantic date on any given evening, as he is attracted to the Red Widow's gender (and Yaos) in addition to his own gender.

"Greetings Lady," Kylian Phandros steps forward. He likely recognizes something about Yaos as a noble, but you are uncertain what. "How may I be of service?" Kylian is assuming you must be here for him.

None of the circles are being used for fencing. And the small arena lacks the intrinsic smell of athlete's sweat permeated into the walls from sport.

Taking in the scene, Yaos smiles to herself,:
and when one of them speaks to her says in reply:-

"I am a stranger to Westcrown by the name of Yaos Battori. I was told this was an area for fencing and was hoping to improve my martial skills here. But I seem to have arrived at the wrong time. No matter, I am pleased to make your acquaintance gentlemen."

Yaos smiles and bows theatrically in greeting, while thinking:-

A coterie of gays. Damn, that makes charming the lot of them much harder.

Yaos will try to make friends with the group.

Diplomacy: 1d20 + 12 ⇒ (15) + 12 = 27

Yaos wasn't planning on seducing anyone. Just manipulating them a lot.

DM Ray. Just read your questions in discussion. Yaos is dressed for fencing, so nothing fancy and has omitted Battori insignia and heraldry. Red Wing has not been summoned and Pale Wing is with her but, as often, on aerial lookout. However, Yaos is not in disguise and her charisma of 26 makes her notable. She could have left her headband behind and reduced her charisma to a mere 22, which may be a bit less obvious. But she didn't.

Kylian Phandros
Socialite; Bastard of Viscount Jeremiah Phandros

.

Kylian Phandros and his cadre invite Yaos:
in their casual conversation, though the topic has obviously changed. Kylian Pahndros leads a new conversation about art and poetry and opera. ....There is a perceptible eyebrow-raise from young Kylian Phandros when the name 'Battori' finally registers in his mind. It was familiar to him, sure, but now the full impact has clicked in his mind. His attitude toward you changes, from casual friendliness to curiosity and a hint of ambition. His friends do not seem to notice. After a few minutes more of small talk, at a pause in the conversation, Kylian Phandros asks after your House name and why, praytell, Yaos is not wearing any Battori heraldry or insignia.

Kylian remains pleasant, always on the lookout it seems, for an influential ally or co-conspirator.

Yaos replies with:
"It seems my fame has preceded me. Yes, I am Yaos Battori, called the Red Widow or Hellbringer, but do not worry, I mean none of you any harm. As for the lack of heraldry or insignia, I arrived in Westcrown only late last night and I am searching for ... a group. I decided to remain anonymous for the moment. My fine scheme was foiled by your alertness Kylian."
