It is an age of darkness ...

A homebrew Pathfinder campaign.

I am back off my travels and I can see I have a lot of catching up to do. I will get back up to speed tomorrow morning and get a post in.

I hope you all had a cracking Christmas.

Hope everyone had a Merry Christmas!

Traveling, time and access both more limited than I thought.
Should be back and back to 'normal' by the 3rd.

(Whatever 'normal' means!)

Thanks for understanding,
And HAPPY NEW YEAR!

Laters,...

The Exchange

Likewise, I should run out of visits to friends and relations by Sunday.

Happy New Year everyone.

Cheers

Hey guys, I’m back from holidays. Might take me a couple of days to catch up on various games, but will hopefully be back up to speed shortly.

How was everyone’s Christmas (or seasonal holiday of your choice) and New Years celebrations?

The Exchange

It was a regular family fest.

One of the best two weeks celebrations I can remember since being a child, partly because of my son and his antics with trains, tractors and cars. All part of being two, I guess.

Plus I managed to avoid the current batch of virulent flu bugs that are hitting everyone in GB at the moment. Friends and family have been dropping like flies.

How was yours? in Queensland?

Cheers

Ash hosted Christmas day at his place, that was a lot of fun. Went up to Queensland for a week after that - and boy, it was hot up there!

I'm BAAAACK!
Did 'ja miss me?
Or is your aim getting better???!? ;P

Hey All, sorry for the disappearing act, but access during family visit was much more limited than in previous years.

BUt I'm back now, will get back up to speed asap!

Hope everybody had as good a Christmas and Happy New Year as I did!

Laters,...

Rags~

Edit- Was downright chilly up in Oklahoma! CAme back down south to Louisiana, and I'm taking down my Christmas Lights in shorts and a t-shirt, wondering how many times I'll have to mow my yard,... in JANUARY!

;P

Wow. You guys are the LEAST chattiest OOC group I have ever seen! ;)

Question, (this is probably posted earlier in the discussion thread, and I just haven't found it yet)
But what, exactly, is up with the masks? At first I thought they were just something for festival days, then I see that people seem to be wearing them all the time. But not everyone. Are they cultural, religious, caste, etc? What obviously important bit of background did I miss here?

And I am slowly but surely catching up in the BN (Before Nicholai) portion of the thread. Good job all around from everyone.

Laters,

HEy all, trying to be creative with my spell use here, and wold like to know what the DM thinks of the following, quoted from the text for the 'Open/Close' Cantrip;

"You can open or close (your choice) a door, chest, box, window, bag, pouch, bottle, barrel, or other container. If anything resists this activity (such as a bar on a door or a lock on a chest), the spell fails. In addition, the spell can only open and close things weighing 30 pounds or less. Thus, doors, chests, and similar objects sized for enormous creatures may be beyond this spell’s ability to affect."

OK, Obviously I could use it to shut a window from across the room to prevent a ratter or the Imp from jumping/flying out of it.
But now I am thinking this, lay the net on the floor, and use the spell to 'close' it like a bag around whoever steps on it. The net is easily under the 30 pound weight limit. It wouldn't catch a flying creature (more's the pity) But would be a way to set a quick trap. I would basically have to have a readied action to cast the cantrip once someone(s) were standing on it, (standard action to cast)

Now it does say that if anything 'resists' the action it fails, but examples are a bar on a door or a lock on a chest, things in place to keep the item from moving. I am reading this to mean I can still close a net up around someone standing on it.

Again, just trying to be creative. It's not always about the damage output. (ALthough that certainly never hurts!)

What is your ruling o' mighty Moth-Miester? ;)

Liberty's Edge

Male Mothman Expert 5

Yeah, a lot of the planning type OOC stuff ends up happening in the game thread (either in or out of character). We mostly use the OOC thread for “I’m gonna be away for a few days” or completely off the topic type stuff, or really wordy rules type discussions or whatever.

Lichford is currently in the midst of a week-long festival called the Shackling; it’s not exactly a holiday – people still go to work during the week, but tend to party at night. The festival cumulates with a really big Halloween type party on the last night.

Folk traditionally wear masks during the festival (particularly at the evening parties, but many wear them all through the day as well); however, the Church of Arton frowns at the festivals pagan roots, and although it hasn’t been able to stamp out the festivities completely, those who are particularly devout (or don’t want to incur the Church’s wrath) tend not to wear masks.

I reckon I'd allow it.

Yay!

(Now let's see if I'm clever enough to actually find a way to DO it in the game!) ;P

Thank you,...

Yeah sorry about that. I'm having enough trouble getting online as often as I'd like to post, so often the OOC takes a back seat and I don't get a chance to look at it for days at a time.

Glad to hear everyone seems to have had a good christmas and new years.

Heh, No worries Ash. Was making an observation that's all.

And I tend to spend WAY too much time checking the threads, and even more typing, so I guess it all kinda balances out! ;)

I am being rather rubbish at keeping up with the pace of the posting, I will give myself a C- and must try harder. I post and when I come back there are another half dozen posts. I am loving how fast this gets updated, it is a credit to all of you.

I am also struggling to find a personality for Kajetan apart from Quite Book Worm. Any suggestions on quirks?

Heh, it's a testimony to how much time I spend at work reading/typing instead of doing my job! ;P

AS far as quirks go, I can think of a few that would fit a bookworm type personality,...
-Totally self-absorbed (doesn't have to be in a bad way) particularly when reading. Doesn't notice things going on around him when he is in his own world. (Good for those who can't post a lot!)

-Gets angry/frustrated when interrupted while lecturing,...

-Shy, doesn't talk a lot, has to be drawn out into conversation. But heaven help the person who gets him started on one of his favorite subjects!

-Can be condescending towards those he doesn't feel as his intellectual equal. (Again, this doesn't have to be a 'bad' thing. It may be usually reserved for our opponents.)

-Even a Dr. Who type personality type would be cool. He is so smart that he just doesn't realize the others around him don't know as much as he does. ('What, you've never heard of a type IV infernal planar-based heat-resistant life form before?!? Their weaknesses are commonly known,...') But this requires the player to go to the trouble of making up and using all those big pseudo-scientific words! ;)

Ah,... that's all I got right now. Hope it helps.

Same here, so no worries, no need to grade yourself so harshly. I'm better than I was between August and late October, but far worse than I was when we first started the game in April 2007, when my posts were far more descriptive. My workload these days is quite high, and I recently started a new relationship, so I don't have a whole lot of time (and sometimes energy) to post as frequently or in as much detail as I would like. But I love this group and Moth's story, so the last thing I want to do is quit!

And like Ash said, the out of game discussion thread takes the back seat for me (hadn't checked in a few weeks!)...

The Exchange

Pharris once asked Kajetan about his background and life before we all met and didn't get much detail.

Maybe there is some background stuff that you could use to bring the character's personality, likes and dislikes to the forefront.

I'd always start with the roots and then see what springs from that.

Or because you are taking over a PC, you could work backwards. There must be a reason for Kajetan's bookishness and other traits to date, such as his love of magic. What reasons from his past fit and what drives him to risk it all with us in the future?

Maybe something here will spark you off. Good luck.

Fair warning to you all, invisible castle has taken a dislike to me and is cursing me with single figure rolls.

Just read Endless Night - the Drow city part of the Second Darkness Adventure Path.

Did you know you are in it as a monster, Mothman?

For mapping have any of you tried this?

Table Top RPG

A few DM's use it in some other sign ups for results like this:

Example

I have not used it myself, but the creator is on DMTools, so he can have is brain picked if you fancy trying it. Normal it is used to host remote games, but it seems to work just as well as a mapping tool. As long as you have a scanner and an account with photo bucket.

Yeah, I spotted that. I'm CR6.

A pretty good take on mothman IMO.

I haven't tried it. Normally, if I get the inclination to draw a map, I either just do a quick hand sketch, or I use CAD to draw one.

I was going to draw and scan one for this battle, but I made a mistake on hte map I drew for me, and didn't have the patience to redraw it accurately to scan for the group.

Do people want a map for this?

I drew one up initially using kruelades template, so I am OK (well as OK as you can be when surrounded by rats)

The Exchange

I did one on the weekend using old fashioned paper and pencil. I'm fine with that.

Cheers

Agreed and what a good AP. Need more time and groups to keep playing them though. Certainly better than Crimson Throne I believe.

My group love drow and I can see them wanting to play this AP next, but I am an Arabian fan so I have my fingers crossed that Legacy of Fire is better.

Cheers

I am SO far behind on my reading,... I'm not even gonna mention that I haven;t even read halfway thru the first Ap yet!

,... Oops. (Dangnabbit!)

But glad to hear that he Darkness is looking good. I also am an arabian nights/Sinbad/etc. fan, and am now looking forward to the next one. (Maybe I'll actually READ this one?!?) meh,...

The Exchange

I am contemplating running Legacy.

A couple of my games are slowing down, one stopped. The faster paced ones are Heathy's and Patrick's. AoD is somewhere in the middle with fast and slow days.

We'll see.

Cheers

Heh, yeah,
Good thing about Heathy's game, he's got sooo many players in it, and he plays it so loose (in comparison to most), and his players all love writing, so that he can go missing for almost 2 days before you realize he isn't there!

As always, let me know if you do start up Legacy FW. I'm in a good balance right now. Most days it doesn't take me TOO much time to cover all my games. But I'm still waiting on one to re-start so we can finish it. But if the others im in slow or stop, I'd love to hop back in the bandwagon with the wolfie for another ride!

I've really enjoyed reading Crimson Throne and Second Darkness. Playing in RotRL in Aubrey's pbp game, but we haven't got that far. I'd like to run one of them ... but you know, too many games, not enough time...

By the way, I've been quite busy the past two days, and that's likely to continue until tomorrow at least ... should have a bit more time for the boards from Thursday.

Liberty's Edge

Male Mothman Expert 5

I check and usually post on the boards almost every day. Most games, if I miss a day I have like 1 to 5 posts to catch up on. If I miss a day in Heath's game I usually find an entire page has gone by without me posting!

The Exchange

That is so true. It happens most nights to me, the most I have missed is 60 posts.

And we have snow!!!

First time in years and you should have seen the look on my son's face. He did a double take. Then looked around to see if it was everywhere. Great, especially as we had been swimming indoors when it all started. Big surprise.

Thanks for letting us know about being busy.

Cheers

Hah! Now you know how I felt the other day, when we got snow in southern Louisiana.

SNOW.
In SOUTHERN LOUISIANA,...

Now my kid wants to know why he can;t have it more often, "Like at grandma's house" (In Oklahoma)

"Well,... because son, Oklahoma has something we usually don't.
Seasons."

;P

RE; Heathy's thread, I try to never miss a day of reading, even if I can't post, because catching up takes WAY too much time! I've never counted the number of posts, but more than once I've back to find at least a page and a half, if not almost 2 full pages waiting for me!

just FYI-
It's my Bday today. So I probably won't be on later tonite with a late post as usual.
Hopefully because I'm celebrating!

Laters!

The Exchange

Happy 43rd!

Liberty's Edge

Male Mothman Expert 5

Happy birthday man. Have a good one.

Happy birthday, have a good one.

Thx all.
And I DID have a happy, ;)

I'm back (finally)
HAd a crazy week/weekend.
Mardi Gras party in the Auditorium,... yippie,...
I have a musical in my space this week (Joseph & the Technicolor dreamcoat) so I won't be doing my usual evening posts unless it's very late, but I SHOULD be able to keep up during the daytimes,... mostly.

Male Human Bard 1/Ranger 1/Expert 3

Belated happy b-day, Rags!

Perhaps we should also celebrate having just passed the 4000 post milestone for the in-game thread? Congrats, Mothster... and thanks, everyone else!

Yeah! congrats Moth-master! And thanks again for letting me join!

Liberty's Edge

Thanks guys, and well done to you too. How is everyone feeling about the game? Any concerns or criticisms?

The Exchange

I love this game, my character and the group is top notch.

My only criticism is that we can't sit down this Friday night and play at a table together.

Cheers

Yeah, what FW said!

Must admit though, I have no idea how we're going to capture/kill a pack of invisible imps in a room this big... nor how we could possibly corral them into a smaller room. Nice challenge, Moth... you must be enjoying this quite a bit... :-)

Just keep in mind not to use all your resources on one ... when there are presumably a few more lurking about the place somewhere...

The Exchange

Duly noted...

Though one is bad enough.

Maybe we should all enter one of smaller upper rooms and try to reduce the size of the problem? Even carry on and wedge the door behind us.

Sorry, been busy at work, and will be through the weekend. (And not JUST because it's Valentine's day!)
Should return to (Semi) normal for the next week.

Yeah! What you guys said! Great group, would love to be able to play table-top with you all! (Of course, I'd love to be able to play tabletop with anybody right now!)

Hopefully we can tag this turkey before things get too hairy. But if ALL of the imps/quasit can turn inviis at will, this could be a very difficult fight.

Our real life group has enough trouble getting together for a game on a Friday night. Our ‘once a month’ schedule tends to stretch somewhat. Although having said that, Ash has just started DMing a game for some of our group, and so far we’ve managed to sit down for the first two sessions only three weeks apart. I’m having a lot of fun playing rather than DMing for once, smashing things with my viking type PC.

Getting into a smaller space might be a good idea here. Frankly, this guy is pretty stealthy (on top of being able to go invisible and change form), I’ve gotten good stealth rolls for him these two rounds, and those –1 penalties per 10 feet distant are killing you at the moment (well, not to mention the poor rolls…)

The Exchange

Our table top game is meant to meet once a month all day on a Saturday. But it is slipping lately and is more like every six weeks.

However my wife and I have an agreement so that we can both have the odd weekend "away" while the other looks after Archie.

That means I get to run two three-day mini-conventions at home with friends from all over this year. The next one is in May when I'll be running a 2 day 4th level adventure and then a friend takes over for a one day high level (9th) game. So I get to play too.

The evenings will be devoted to card/board games and a savage game of Diplomacy.

Meanwhile my son and wife head off to relations for a few days.

Cheers

Nice!

I recently started playing in a quasi-weekly homebrew Castles and Crusades game... it's been a blast, and a pleasure to get some regular table top action again (I've been long overdue)! I'm currently preparing to DM a d20 Midnight campaign... hoping to game every 2-3 weeks, but that may be wishful thinking.

Very nice!
I haven't played in a 'regular' game in probably 5-6 years. And THAT game was with me on the internet -cam with all of my friends gathered around the table in Oklahoma! (Yes, I am the 'Web-cam guy' in the webcomic 'Full Frontal Nerdity!') ;)

Other than that, it's been the PbP's, and if I'm VERY lucky, a brief round of something when I go to visit family and friends for the holidays.

My kingdom for a weekly game!

(My game for a kingdom!!!) :P
