Thanks for the welcome back! I have been following along and am ready to jump back in at the appropriate time.
Jonventus, pleasure to meet you. And sorry about that whole Sorcerer thing.
Just a FYI though, I will be away from June 21 to June 30. I don't know if this would make my reappearence a hassle. Mothman, just let me know if you think it would. Sorry for any inconvenience regarding that.

Hey Folks,
I am looking for any thoughts or advice. I have been pondering Kajetan's future. Now that we have another Sorcerer in the group, should Kajetan pursue other endeavors?
Here is what I'm getting at. Kajetan is a born scholar, but to truely be a scholar, he needs skill points to throw into Knowledge. Now the Sorcerer only gets 2 skill points + Int. as he gains levels. A rogue on the other hand gets 8. Kajetan though is more Sorcerer, less rogue. Plus there would be the multi-classing penalty. Now I looked at the Loremaster PrC in the DMG. That might be a possiblity but not for quite awhile. I am basically looking to maximize skill points now. Any thoughts? Maybe a PrC I am unaware of.
Mothman, in the beginning of the Discussion Thread, you mentioned that there might be additional penalties if an arcane caster multi-classed. Would my possible proposal be effected.
Thanks for any help.
Cheers.

I think what I meant was a restriction on multi-classing into an arcane class, rather than from one – for example, to my way of thinking it doesn’t make that much sense that someone could just “become” a wizard after a good night’s sleep, with no formal training (given that being a wizard generally requires formal training), unless they have a good background story to explain it.
This shouldn’t effect you multiclassing into a rogue or something else – hell, given your scholarly background I’d even accept you multi-classing into wizard without too much trouble I think (although that probably wouldn’t help you).
You shouldn’t get an xp penalty for dipping into one other class, as a human your highest level class is your favoured class. A scholarly rogue does not stretch credibility for me, although a rogue’s knowledge skills (as class skills) are limited. A dip into bard may be a good choice – only 6 skill points (EDIT), but a wider range of scholarly type class skills, and bard seems to fit the scholar archetype better than rogue does. But its your choice.
Can’t really think of any appropriate PrCs (apart from Loremaster) – none of the ones in Complete Arcane strike me as being what you’re after (and none except the bard based ones give more than 2 skill points). I'm happy to consider ones from other sources if anyone knows any good ones.

Thanks Mothman. Never really multi-classed before. Just read the rules again. Been misunderstanding the penaly rule all this time. Huh!
Good thoughts with the Bard instead of Rogue. That should help out alot. Thanks!

Hey Utak,
No need to move away from sorcerer on my account if that's why you are considering it. I'm fine with having two sorcerers in the party. And our PCs are very different. Nicolai is no scholar, and, in fact, abhors long hours of study. He comes by his talents naturally (genetically). He also prefers flashier spells than Kajetan seems to.
What I meant earlier was just that I wouldn't necessarily have made an arcane caster when I started. My last PbP experience was as a Level 1 wizard and I never really got into the character or had much to do, wizards being especially limited at 1st level. I'm fine with it now and am happy with Nicolai. I think you just caught me on an off day and I, for some reason, decided to leave a negative comment. Sorry about that!
Utak
Jonventus,
No apologies necessary.
I brought this topic up for Kajetan's character develpment. When I created him, I had the concept of a scholar in mind. When I joined the game, it was short an arcane caster. At the time, the Sorcerer Class seemed to fit in with Kajetan's background. Now that I am developing him though, the 2 skill points per level that the Sorcerer Class allows just does not match with where I want to go with him. I need more skill points to throw into the 8+ Knowledge skills. If I kept the Sorcerer Class, Kajetan would be as scholarly as Chris Farley was in Tommy Boy. Instead, I would like Kajetan to actually have some knowledge. Knowledge: Create Bong does not count. :)
On the other hand, if you were thinking of taking Nicholai in a different direction, I'll keep Kajetan as a Sorcerer.
All good stuff. No negative energy felt. But communication is good anyway.
Cheers.

The factotum is the skill monkey from Dungeonscape. They are more a jack-of-all-trades than a knowledge beast. Bard probably fits the closest but isn't Keildrithe one too?
Musing over other vague possibles
Ranger?
Urban druid or just plain druid?
Not sure what your strength or wisdom are though.
But my natural instinct is to thrash out with Mothman a variant sorcerer with more skill points and less spells. A bit like a battle sorcerer. That may not be everyone's cup of tea but its what I do. Mainly because a multiclassed spellcaster doesn't keep up with the rest of the party.
2 pence worth.

I could deal with that. I don't mind retconning it even from level 1 if you like. See what you think ...
I’m thinking, variant, scholarly sorcerer: 4 or maybe 6 skill points per level, add all knowledge skills to class skills list. Spell progression same as standard sorcerer except one less “spells per day” of each level, minimum of 0 (+ bonus spells if applicable).

Wow, thanks for bringing this up FW and thanks for considering it Mothman.
I am all for more skill points and less spells. Heck I'm even willing to take a hit on my Fort and Reflex saves and BAB for more skill points.
Also, I alreay had the Educated Feat giving access to all of the Knowledge Skills. Any chance of switching feats also?
Thanks again.

OK, to finalize some details. Feel free to power this down, if it needs to be.
Will adjust everything starting at 1st level.
- 6 skill points per level
- All Knowledge Skills as Class Skills
- Spell Progression same as Sorcerer except one less "Spells per Day" at each level, mimimum 0 (+ bonus spells if applicable)
- Change Educated Feat
As an alternate (and this may underpower Kajetan, but I am willing to do it plus it does make sense for the character IMO.)
{Same as above except}
- 8 skill points per level
- Subtract 1 from Sorcerer Fortitude Save, Reflex Save & BAB
Just some thoughts. Let me know what you think.
Cheers and have a great weekend

I think 8 skill points is too much. 6 brings you on par with the bard, which I think is about right.

If this looks good, I will make the adjustments after work tonight. Thanks for the thoughts and consideration.

Skip the last one Utak, I think it makes the class too weak.

I was thinking Utak, does Kajetan have a familiar? If not perhaps you could parlay that into something more applicable like Scribe Scroll?
Cheers
A familiar just didn't feel right for Kajetan. I like the way you think though. Our good DM has been quite generous already I fear. I would feel like Oliver Twist.
Please Mothman, may I have some more? :)
Jonventus
OK, Kajetan is updated. I must admit though, I feel like I got a load of goodies with giving up very little.
Mothman, you may want to consider decreasing my Saves, or BAB, or more spells, or a combination.
Once seeing everything on paper, I am now feeling quite guilty.

For the last 5 minutes I have been beating my brain regarding that line. I can hear it in my head ... almost. But I just cant get it right and say it. Arrggghhh!

I don't know man, it looks alright to me. Seems to be on par with the level of changes to the "battle sorcerer" from the SRD. Kajetan is now a knowledge machine, but whether or not we adjust his BAB, saves or spells further he's not great in combat. And I don't think its much fun for you if he's 100% useless in combat.
Besides, its good if we have someone in the group with good knowledge skills.
Utak
It's all good. I just didn't want to come off as a power gamer. I appreciate you working with me so I could take Kajetan where I wanted to. I just feel like I got a really good deal.
But your right, ask me again how I feel when we're in combat. :)
BTW: I finally upgraded from dial-up to DSL. Man what a difference. I have a new e-mail address: gmistal@verizon.net

Had a really busy weekend and haven't had a chance to read the updates. Nicolai will post tonight when I get home (in about 7-8 hours)
No problem man. I think Twiceborn and Ash have been busy over the weekend too, and Utak is away most of the week - so you haven't missed much at all.
I might just aim to move things along a bit ... try to put together a post sometime today.

I've been around (nursing a broken heart), but I've been waiting for a reply from Laithe before undertaking further action. I failed the most recent Spot check, so didn't bother posting the result.
I will, however, probably be away from June 28 through July 1.

No worries. The only way to get over it is to talk about it... and to keep busy. Life goes on. But thanks...

Cool. If you'd like to talk, either her or FB or email, let me know

Yeah, sorry about the delay in posting over the weekend. And also sorry to hear the bad news Twiceborn - hope you're traveling ok.
TwiceBorn
Folks, thanks very much for your concern and kind wishes. No need to worry. I've had good chats with friends and family, and work is keeping me so busy that I have no time to mope around. And as a matter of fact, I've also been speaking with my ex... and I think some time to think and reflect is what we both need. Things may not be "permanently over" after all, but only time will tell...
On another note, it's starting to look like I may be staying at home next weekend after all... The friend I was expecting to go trekking with can't make it.
TwiceBorn
I'm sorry about your relationship, TwiceBorn. Glad to hear you are coping, and that your support network is kicking in. You sound like a great person, so I'm hopeful that things will work out in a positive way.
Thanks for the kind words, Jon! I'm too busy to be depressed (never thought I'd be so thankful for being overloaded at work)!
On another note... looks like the backpacking trip is on again... so I'll likely be incommunicado from Friday until Tuesday night...

Good game. Very enjoyable.
Lost original post will try to keep this one short.
Two general points.
1) Pharris hasn't been on full hits since we started. It shows to me that everyone is concentrating on the RP and confirms that the game is good. But if we meet anything tough, we may need to run.
2) I wish you guys were in the UK so that I wouldn't miss joining in some of the "overnight" conversations.
By the same token, if you want me to do anything different let me know, DM.
Cheers

Sorry to hear that Twiceborn. I hope things work out alright for you.
Hey, just a check on how the game is going for everyone? Everyone enjoying themselves? Stuff you'd like to see more of, or less of? The pacing alright?
Everything's shiny for me. I enjoy the group, the pacing, and the game.

Hell, I wish I was in the UK.

Hey TwiceBorn,
I hope that your backpacking trip went well. Sorry to hear about your relationship. I wish I could say more than that and not come off like some type of advice colomnist, but the difficulty of that is beyond my meager talents. So I'll just say that I hope for you the best in all aspects of your life. Cheesy, I know, but I like cheese, especially with crackers and grapes.
Hey, just a check on how the game is going for everyone? Everyone enjoying themselves? Stuff you'd like to see more of, or less of? The pacing alright?
Mothman, you run a great and solid game. You are a master of mixing things up, keeping us on our toes, and keeping us thinking with intrigue, mystery, and great NPC's.
If there is one thing that I would have you change: Quit burning down libraries. :)
BTW: Just got in from about 7 hours on the road. I am caught up on the thread, but my brain needs to hit the 'Refresh' button. If not later tonight, I'll catch up with a hopefully thoughtful post tomorrow.
Cheers All

Sorry for my posting (or rather, lack thereof) over the last few days. I just started a new job (a new restaurant) and it’s been extraordinarily busy; when I get a break I’m not in a place to do any actual writing. For a while, I’ll only be able to post once a day, if that. Sorry for the inconvenience, hopefully things will quite down a little and my schedule will become a little more predictable within the next few weeks. Please NPC me as necessary.
Thanks for your patience and sorry for the inconvenience.

No complaints at this end, though I've been a little busy of late and haven't had a chance to post as much as usual. So apologies for that.

Well Ash, you weren't the last to reply to this question (sorry, Mothman). I'm happy with the game, too, and we've probably got the best group of players we've ever had... And we're back into split party/spoiler mode, which heightens suspense :-). Mothman, I think you're really keeping us guessing, and your descriptions are top notch... no complaints from me!
If my posts seems a little sluggish, it has nothing to do with my interest in the game... you all know what's going on. It's nice to have an escape, though. Thanks for your patience and understanding, and my apologies for making my personal issues "public." That normally isn't my style...
Anyway, on with the game...
