It's been a day and a half.
Nice to know that, the biggest things I need to butcher are fish.

Scath Lynx |

I've never done more than carve roasts off a haunch before personally, but I've watched people do it and it takes a lot of energy.

Scath Lynx |

Not really, they just don't let 12yo's use bone saws and razor sharp butcher knives and meat cleavers. :)
I haven't been hunting in 25 years, and haven't seen a dressing and butchering in a few more years than that. But I seriously doubt the technology or approach has changed in the last 25 years. :)
I've bought a few haunches in the intervening years though, and carved off meat from it for the freezer, but very much not the same. :)

I actually got the deer yesterday, let it hang in the garage overnight, and then skinned and quartered it today. Now it's sitting in a fridge because the temperature is supposed to go above 40F for the next few days and I don't want it to start to spoil.
Around here our deer don't tend to get very big, so you're lucky if you get one to field dress(just gutting) to much more than 100lbs. But it isn't the size that gets me, it's the fact that I don't really know what I'm doing when it comes to butchering and don't have the proper equipment, like a meat grinder. My brother-in-law does.
As for how hard it is to butcher a deer, from what I've seen it depends on your setup and how experienced you are. My brother-in-law and his buddies have a small shed dedicated to it(soon to be an entire barn once it gets finished) and have been cutting deer for at least 15 years. I've seen 3.3 guys(because I barely count as helping) fully butcher a deer in under an hour in that shed, and keep that rate up for an entire night. Whereas when I was quartering my deer today I spent half an hour just skinning it.
Edit because other posts were made while I was typing that on my phone: As for the approach, it's probably very much the same and only varies by how much money you put into it. A filet knife, hacksaw, come-along, and a meat grinder gets you a nice setup. Oh, and beer. Lots and lots of beer. Because everyone knows that sharp knives and alcohol should never be kept separate.

Scath Lynx |

Ah, so pretty small ones then. I'm used to much bigger ones, white tail, Louisiana. They get pretty big down there. And note those weights I was giving were the field dress weight, not the usable meat weight. :)

Trusk, the Warchild |

I kinda figured it was dress weight.
Yea, up here in West Virginia we don't get very many big ones. There's actually a marked difference in size between a WV deer and a PA or Ohio deer, it's that bad. You always know when someone has been hunting along the PA border because they'll bring in some massive deer that weighs 150+ after it's been dressed, while the guys who hunt further into WV bring in comparatively tiny things.
I didn't have scales available, but I'd guess that my doe's dress weight was around 90-100lbs. She was a nice big one for around here. I'd kill for a 200lb deer.

Scath Lynx |

Yeah, my mom used to live up near the southern boarder of WV, over in VA. They would average better than that on does (she got one about 8 years ago during black powder season that dressed out at 115). She hasn't hunted since her triple bypass, and now she's moved to Texas with us.
I've got 2-3 white tail that live on my property (well, my property, the neighbors, the guy down the streets). They're not all that big, but probably 150-175 on the hoof.
My brother in law was down and saw one 25 feet from the back door, and told us later he almost grabbed an old ornamental sword I had on the wall and went to stab it for dinner. I told him if he'd tried, it would have run, or sliced him to ribbons before he could scream.

Trusk, the Warchild |

The biggest that I've personally seen was a 10 point that someone brought in to my brother-in-law's shed 2 years ago. They bagged it along the Ohio border, and you could definitely tell compared to all the others we'd gotten in that season. We actually grabbed his bathroom scale and checked it, and it weighed just a tad under 190. The next biggest that we had in at the time had come from the PA border and was sitting at around 150.
As for stabbing a deer, I almost could have done that last month. I'm ashamed to say it, but I missed 3 shots at this same deer I just got when I originally went in the middle of November. And then I was out of arrows, stuck in a tree, and the deer just didn't give a crap. They were ignoring my talking, my rattling branches, my moving around, everything. If they had moved about 5 yards closer I could have jumped from my treestand with my knife in my teeth and tackled one. But for the entire two hours that I was sitting there with them right by me, they never came close enough.
Getting game animals to ignore me at inopportune times is something I seem to have a knack for. If I'm actually in a position to kill one, they spook for miles around. Once I'm rendered harmless they'll practically come up and lick me. Actually had a squirrel crawl up my pant leg and perch itself on my butt last year while I was in a staring contest with a couple doe, believe it or not.

Scath Lynx |

Maybe if you were nicer to Scath in character, you wouldn't have this issue. :)

Scath Lynx |

No problems letting Wylliam/Valeria get out of combat.
If you have time to send a synopsis of what Scath saw in the caves, that would be great tho, so I can be thinking about what he'll do on the return trip.

Scath Lynx |

Yep, no problem!
I'm travelling again the next few days, so may be a bit slow to respond.

Scath Lynx |

Double Entendre,
But she originally meant it as Kentucky.

DM Kana |

You a KY gal, DM?
To answer your question. Yes, born and raised in Kentucky.
So despite that...i've lost track over what Kentucky is aside from a state and a fastfood giant. Especially after luther's comment.
Stop thinking about it as Kentucky, and think about what else uses KY.
So was I, you all have dirty minds.
I blame Scath for making me stop and think about how it could be interpreted differently.
Also, Scath, I'm working on that PM for you about what you found as I get time this morning.

Scath Lynx |

I'm sorry,
But I've never ever been at an RPG table in 25 odd years of RPG'ing where that particular phrase, as Luther typed it, wouldn't have had people falling off their chairs laughing. Granted, it only works typed, not said, but double entendre's are still something most geeks laugh about.

Scath Lynx |

Glad to see you're not vanished Valeria. We can keep you NPC'd for a while I think, or just assign you to guard duty outside the cave so that nothing attacks everyone from behind while they assault.

Scath Lynx |

Valeria seems to roll better when she's not here. :)

Scath Lynx |

The lynx is already half-way through the cave, far ahead of you, finding things.

Scath Lynx |

Scath yawns and wakes up.

Alexis Carevin |

Hey welcome back! I'm doing good and eating like never before! Hope you also gained some pounds!

Scath Lynx |

Scath cooked :
One 26 lb Turkey
One 5 lb Duck
10 lbs of Potatoes
1 pot of Stuffing
1 medium bowl of mixed veggies.
1 mixer full of Gravy
All for 3 people, and 5 cats. :)
The plan is to have left overs for a week or so.

Scath Lynx |

I hope everyone had a wonderful holiday. Let's see if we can get things moving once again, since it's looking like things have calmed down for me from the holiday.
Just confirming, you're not waiting on us for anything right?

DM Kana |

Oh no, I was just making sure everything is up to date and ready to go on my map ^^
That and I was putting a couple other things together right quick. :3
Also, as a little Christmas treat, I'm going to allow everyone to draw a Harrow point. I'll shuffle for each person and draw a fresh hand of 6 cards. You can roll a d6 or just choose a number. You can play or save this card to use again at any point, and I can tell you the specials of said card draw.
Each card has two powers, of which you chose one when you draw it. A card can be used only once before it is gone from the game.
Edited to add some info I forgot to add before ^^;

Scath Lynx |

Scath picks 4, since Scath has four paws, and each paw has four claws (not counting the dewclaw, which he can't use to attack). :)

DM Kana |

Scath chose: The Rabbit Prince
The Rabbit Prince Grants one of the following two powers when used:
Keys (Dex): You can spend a keys card to take your turn immediately. Treat this as a readied action, moving your initiative to just before the currently acting creature. You may only take a move or a standard action on this turn.
Chaotic Neutral: You gain the effects
of rage, as the spell, lasting a duration of 1 round + an additional round for every
3 Hit Dice you possess above the first.

DM Kana |

Alexis chose: The Betrayal
The Betrayal grants one of the following two powers when used:
Crowns (Cha): You may spend a crown card to re-roll any one d20 roll you just made. You must take the results of the second roll, even if it is worse.
Neutral Evil: You channel negative energy that deals an amount of damage equal to 1d6 × your character level to a creature touched. This effect heals
undead creatures as spells like inflict light wounds.

Scath Lynx |

Thanks, I think Rage will probably get used, as +1 hit and +1 damage works well for one round. ALthough the 2 rounds of fatigued suck. May use the other one instead on a surprise round. :)

mdt |

If it makes you feel any better Alexis, her character in the other game has been turned into a zombie after having her kidneys ran through, and her throat slashed, and now her zombie is attacking her former companions.

Alexis Carevin |

ROFL!!!
No it does not make me fell better, but worst! Holy Mitra bad kitty, you're evil!!

Trusk, the Warchild |

Wow, the other game has been way more proactive than us. Either that, or more brash. We're standing around outside and sneaking around inside, while they're apparently charging through getting bloody.
Yes, I peeked. How could I not after that juicy zombie-teammate tidbit?
Oh, and for the harrow card...
Harrow card: 1d6 ⇒ 2

Alexis Carevin |

We're more like the townfolks, while they are mighty heroes... But it seems like they made the wrong choice hun?
