Proclamation of his Majesty King Bard of Dale

Free Peoples of the North!

We have won our freedom from the oppression of the Dragon,
have cleared from our lands the threat of the Goblins from the far
mountains, and have proved that together we are mightier than our
foes.

I believe that our destiny is in our own hands, providing that we do not
forget this lesson. Together we are strong. Before we came together,
we were as frightened children, hiding in our homes from the shadows
of the wider world. But now we have a chance of something better,
and all it takes is our courage to grasp it.

And so, Free Peoples of the North, gather up your courage and bring
it to me. I have plans for the North such as you will scarce believe, but
I need your strength to turn plan to deed. In return for playing your
part in our rebirth, I will pay well in gold, land and the satisfaction
of knowing you lead your people from the shadows into a brighter
future.

Make haste to Lake-town. On the first day of each month my
advisors and I will appoint tasks to the willing, and disperse rewards
to those who bring their tasks to completion. And they shall be
celebrated, for they are the heroes of our age.

CHARACTER CREATION

Ability Scores
Roll six 4d6 scores and drop the lowest d6
Or 27 point buy per PBH page 10

JOURNEY TASKS
Guide – In charge of all decisions concerning route, rest, and supplies. Guides rely on Wisdom and Survival proficiency.
Scout – In charge of setting up camp, opening new trails. Scouts rely on Stealth and Investigation.
Hunter – In charge of finding food in the wild. Hunters rely on success with Survival checks.
Look-out – In charge of keeping watch. Look-outs rely on their abilities in Perception.

MISDEEDS
Violent threats – 1 Shadow point gained
Lying purposefully, subtly manipulating the will of others – 2 Shadow points gained
Cowardice, theft and plunder – 3 Shadow points gained
Unprovoked aggression, abusing own authority to influence or dominate – 4 Shadow points gained
Torment and torture, murder – 5 Shadow points gained

When a Player-hero’s Shadow point total exceeds their Wisdom score, they have been made Miserable, as their spirit is weakened by too much grief, sorrow and dark experiences.
New Condition: Miserable
• A Miserable creature has disadvantage on attack rolls.
• The creature automatically fails Charisma ability checks.

GAME START
In the last days of November in the year 2946 of the Third Age, on the fifth anniversary of the eponymous battle, a great feast celebrating the victory at the Battle of Five Armies is held in Dale for the first time. People from all neighboring lands are expected to participate in the revels, as the feast has been arranged to coincide with local celebrations held for the end of the harvest season and the beginning of the colder months of the year.

During the first Gathering of the Council of the North, envoys from Lake-town, the Woodland Realm and the Kingdom under the Mountain meet in the presence of King Bard to debate matters concerning Wilderland.

The player-heroes should find a reason to be at the Gathering. They will asked to carry a message to Woodland Hall.

ROTATING LOREMASTERS
I will take the company from Lake Town to Woodland Hall and second level.

Patrons
Each player-hero should claim a set of notables, canon characters and patrons. You can use those to manipulate the story and advance your storyline.

Rotation
Please volunteer to take the company from one location to another and estimate what level the company will be when they arrive.

With no volunteers to rotate the role of Loremaster, I'll commit to run the game.

Let's create some characters who have a reason to be at the Gathering.

Players should suggest a set of notables, canon characters and patrons who you might want to role-play, too.

cheers

14, 13, 13, 11, 10, 9 = 23 point-buy, blech

I'll give this a go.
4d6: 4d6 ⇒ (3, 5, 1, 6) = 15 14
4d6: 4d6 ⇒ (1, 3, 4, 5) = 13 12
4d6: 4d6 ⇒ (5, 1, 4, 1) = 11 10
4d6: 4d6 ⇒ (6, 5, 6, 6) = 23 18
4d6: 4d6 ⇒ (4, 1, 2, 2) = 9 8
4d6: 4d6 ⇒ (1, 6, 2, 1) = 10 9

I think I'll try for Scout.

I have a copy of 5e Middle earth somewhere. Will look for it.

My reason for being at the Gathering is to win fortune. My farm burned down during the goblin attacks.

I can try Loremastering after this one. Not that familiar with the system though I've run a bit of 5E.

Dúnedain Slayer Fallen Scion (Black Shield)

== Campaign Outline ==

Gameplay will begin at the Gathering while we finish characters, first come first served. Player-heroes will have a reason to be in the Great Hall of Lake-Town and meet potential patrons who are significant characters of the North. This meeting will give the opportunity to introduce your characters and initiate relationships.

The player-heroes will be given the task to deliver a message into Beorn's hands. This is a long journey from Lake-town through the Mirkwood and following the Anduin river, about 300 miles.

I think everyone who expressed interest in the previous thread has access to the books now.

4d6 ⇒ (5, 3, 4, 3) = 15 12

I'll work on a warrior (knight) of minas tirith.

Findegil is about done I think.

Cool. How many more players do you want to wait for?

Say four, since we need to cover journey tasks.

INTERESTED from previous thread
* Gnomezrule -
* Jubal - Dwarf Slayer or Warrior
* Mishima
* KingHotTrash
* Decimus - Knight of Gondor (warrior)
* Twilik - Treasure Hunter and the Scholar

Liberty's Edge

I'm interested if you're not full. I have the books.

CONFIRMED INTEREST
* Decimus = Findegil Warrior Man of Gondor Fallen Scion
* Qstor
* Jubal

Dwarf Slayer & Lore Seeker instead of Baranor

@Findegil

How about Findegil travels north to Dale as an escort to Ecthelion, son of Turgon, the Ruling Steward of Gondor? Ecthelion is 60 years old and would qualify as a Dúnedain; although, he is from Minas Tirith.

He would act as a natural patron.

That works.

Let's give this to next Sunday. If we don't get more interest, we'll move on

Liberty's Edge

ok should we use a standard "sheet" here? how should we do abilities?

I found a fan write up of Dunlendings on the old Cubicle 7 forums based off the culture in The One Ring. Can I use that?

Hi Qstor. PM sent.

Cheers

As for sheets, Findegil, Baranor and Durnim can be copied.

Please post or link the Dunlendings.

So the current party:
1. Findegil Warrior Man of Gondor Fallen Scion
2. Nechtan Slayer Dunlending Folk Healer
3. Jubal elven scholar or a treasure hunter
4. ?

I'd love to play an elven treasure huntress. I'm looking at getting a copy of the book, as i'm a fan of lord of the rings, and dnd fifth edition and it seems like a really cool mash-up. Would it be possible to pitch a character without having a book yet though? Also, which book would I need?

How do you envisage Nectan being in a roomful of notables in the presence of King Bard?

Re Nectan

GM:
Hmm...I"m a big fan of Tolkien too like the other players so I know this isn't on par with the books but maybe first off I should change his background to outcast or come up with another character concept. Maybe he was wondering and got captured by orcs and then worked as a guard on a caravan and came to Lake Town? That sounds more like traditional D&D and not Tolkien. Maybe I should switch to a dwarf from the lonely mountain?

@DM are you playing an NPC? You had yourself listed in the party? Just wondering...

With so few players, I won't object to a DMPC, though it does limit plot surprises.

@Qstor - I wanted to start the game at a meeting with the notables, so the characters can grow into notables and have a reason to interact with notable NPCs. It also helps hook the party together and feel more like the books to me.

@Findegel - Everyone has taken my first three preferences for characters, but I like making characters. So, unless we hit six players, I'll have a DMPC.

Everyone, it would be better if you could link yourselves to some notables, so maybe you could play them or at least we could collaborate for you to know how I would like you to play them. For example, Findegil's player could play Ecthelion, son of Turgon, the Ruling Steward of Gondor.

cheers

I like that suggestion. Is there a concise list of possible patrons and notables to work from?

Findegil wrote:

The players guide describes many. I’ve done some homework on others like the one I suggested for you. To simplify, just claim a race and I’ll work with you.

I’ve got a character down on paper, I’m just looking to translate it to the site now and should be done by tomorrow.

Does Silvaine feel like it fits as far as names go?

I’m not a stickler for names but you can find examples in the players guide
Cheers

OK players

There's only three of you. I would play a DMPC, but are we going to make this happen?

I would appreciate one post every couple of days minimum. Can we do that?

I can open the Gameplay at the gathering of the north. What do you think?

cheers

can I still try to get in on this

4d6 ⇒ (4, 2, 3, 1) = 10 9
4d6 ⇒ (3, 3, 6, 2) = 14 12

What is everyone playing

I haven't had much time to work on characters today.

If I'm in a pbp game, I very rarely miss a day posting in it.

I couldn't find patrons in the player's guide. I'd draw from Minas Tirith personalities.

Gathering of the North sounds good.

Findegil is a warrior (fighter).

@David

So the current party:
1. Findegil Warrior Man of Gondor Fallen Scion - Patrons from Minas Tirith
2. Nechtan Slayer Dunlending Folk Healer - Patrons?
3. Silvane Elven Treasure Hunter - Patrons from Elves
4. David
5. DMPC - something else

@DM Jubal is it OK to switch from Nechtan to a dwarf from the lonely mountain?

Of course. Go ahead

Dúnedain Scholar

Players

Let’s finalize characters by Thursday. I’ll open gameplay to start role playing then. I’ve a weeklong family vacation starting Friday when my posting wil be irregular. After that we can start adventuring

Enjoy your holiday Jubal.

OK. To create some momentum, I've opened Gameplay.

Please role play your patrons as well as your characters. Your patrons would be leaders of your race. Your characters would be accompanying them.

The dwarves are there.

@David - if you settle on a Dúnedain, I'll provide you a patron.

@Silvane - if you stay with Elves, please use Legolas

If you need motives or advice with your patrons, please PM me.

cheers

I will be 100 percent done by tomrrow

@Jubal, do you want us to make aliases for our patrons? Or will we just focus on our main characters for now?
