Ah. I'd missed that the barbarian damage bonus is tied to strength. It's clunky but I guess that's a good way to keep barbarians from all turning into waifs.

Sorry I didn't post in the discussion before so I wasn't being updated to discussion posts.
I definitely want to do meatgrinder mode.
Also, just curious rules questions. One can move through a hostile creature's square if that creature is two sizes larger or smaller, correct? Also, halflings can do that even if the creature is only one size larger, correct? In all cases it counts as difficult terrain. Nella isn't planning to dive through anyone's ankles at the moment, just enjoying the academic discussion.
Character Sheet
What exactly is meatgrinder mode?
★Avernus★ Art 2 ★ Grid
That's right, halflings are cool like that. In bottle necks like this anyways its a nice thing to have. A 2nd level halfling rogue with cunning action could move through the space, disengage, move to someone on the other side and attack.
And I'll mark you for meatgrinder.

Bjorn,
Quote: Meatgrinder Mode:
Also, as an option, you can play in this special game mode. Death saves normally rolled at DC 10 are instead rolled at DC 15. The benefit is that you get 10% extra XP and gold.
Death saves are a little minigame characters play at 0 hp. Its normally a straight d20 vs DC 10. 3 successes you stabilize, 3 fails you die. Meatgrinder bumps this up to DC 15.
Sorry, I was also meaning to go meatgrinder...but I cannot remember if I told you or just thought I did....lol
Character Sheet
Hmm. That seems like it's probably worth it.
★Avernus★ Art 2 ★ Grid
Yep that's my opinion on it. Only a party of jerks wouldn't stabilize each other meaning you just have TPKs to worry about.

LOL did Bhoors channel Captain Jack Sparrow so closely that he picked up a cursed coin that is a death mark????
Cause if he did . . . frankly that's awesome.
★Avernus★ Art 2 ★ Grid
Heh, I didn't even know that was from a movie.

The token thing was stolen with no shame from Tomb of Annihilation. It does actually mention a particular disdain for pirates the faction has. Probably not a coincidence.
On that note I'm pretty tempted to run Tomb, I'm absolutely loving this setting.

The first Pirates of the Caribbean had the cursed Aztec gold coins. The 2nd one had Jack getting the Black Spot a death mark.
I just had this moment thinking that I picked up cursed coin that a bunch of extremist were going to kill me.

It felt a fitting punishment for Bhoors scoundrel behavior.
I remember back in 2nd edition days I had a DM who seemed to always find away for the pick pocket to end up with a cursed coin of generosity.

This will be my first AL scenario. Does anyone have a digital tracker they recommend?
★Avernus★ Art 2 ★ Grid
Not me, nothing for that specific purpose. For my job I use the google suite constantly so I just use Sheets.

Also for those interested in the velociraptor egg story reward, all the mini-adventures will give about the same number of downtime days and reach the 20 day limit by the end. So feel free to RP hatching/raising it.

Just an FYI, I'm traveling today so won't be able to update my sheet until later tonight or tomorrow.
Character Sheet
Hrm. What are the important bits that need to get recorded per adventure?
★Avernus★ Art 2 ★ Grid
The rewards I listed in gameplay: XP, GP, downtime, magic items, story rewards. Also note my DCI number, but you can probably wait until the end for that.
If you guys can't agree who should get the potion, or just if you would rather, I can roll random to see who gets it. Its supposed to be that players who have not already gotten a magic item in play get priority dibs on them.

Nella's good to go. Thanks for an awesome first mini-adventure! Can't wait for the next four.

Mission 1 Rewards:
XP: 100 (meatgrinder 110)
GP: 85 (meatgrinder 93.5)
downtime: 5 days
magic item: potion of healing
story reward: (Velociraptor eggs :D)
[ooc]If you wish to keep any found equipment or other purchases made during play, you need to deduct that from your gp earned. Also any used items, such as arrows not recovered. Finally, we'll still need to rest as usual despite the mission ending. Questions?
Is that a party total of XP and GP to be split or we each get that amount?
1 person marked this as a favorite.

★Avernus★ Art 2 ★ Grid
That is the amount each player receives individually, for all rewards EXCEPT the potion of healing. Only one of you gets that.
Character Sheet
If nobody wants it terribly I'd just roll the die.

Alrighty, using order on slides:
1d7 ⇒ 7
Shal gets the potion of healing.

Took a nap when I got home, then paizo down and new forums appeared! Ha. Getting updates together for everything.

Everyone still here? Haven't seen some since forum change.

Trying to make some sense to these changes...many of my recent posts seem to have gone astray in their switch to this new format...that happen to anyone else??

I've not had any missing posts since the change if thats what you mean.

I'm starting to get the impression that the AL encounters are not the most challenging in the world. You guys have defeated every trap and had no real problems with combat so far. I'm using the modified 'Strong' encounters because of APL, there is a harder 'Very Strong' I could switch to.
Would you like more challenging combats?
Character Sheet
Does that include additional rewards?
★Avernus★ Art 2 ★ Grid
Sort of. Its more XP when enemies are added, but there is a maximum xp limit that can be awarded.
F Ghostwise Halfling Druid 2 | AC 16 | HP 17/17 | Passive per: 15 | Init: +3
I would lean towards harder combats but I'm fine either way. The difficulty of a given encounter is hard to predict. The PCs might roll easily through 9 then have an incredibly difficult time on the 10th due to die rolls, specific matchups, etc.
If the XP gains would increase by 10% or more then I would favor harder combats. But I do understand from my own experience that balancing encounters is extremely difficult.
I would agree with Nella, I have no problem upping the difficulty, but would like to also see a corresponding increase in rewards as well. But like Nella said, it only takes a round or two of crappy rolls to TPK a party, so trying to get the difficulty tuned in can be hard.

Guys, sorry to say but I made a mistake with the smuggler quest gold as well. Proper numbers:
GP: 12.14 (13.35 meatgrinder)

Ha! Glad everyone enjoyed. And good comeback post Bhoors.
I'm interested to see Hildelfa, what with so many interesting reptilian or scaled races for a GM to choose from. ;)

LOL...too funny!! Good luck, and remember to just let her down gently...hehe

I have a feeling that the rewards for this game quest may be proportional to how well we do. If we do one of the other quests first in the morning, the level 1s will hit level 2. Nella, in particular, will be able to wild shape into large creatures with 50 ft move speeds, which may be helpful in this mysterious race or game. But if the party would rather pursue the games first, that's fine.
★Avernus★ Art 2 ★ Grid
Not a bad plan. You guys have 3 leads currently:
Soggy Wren for more info on the fragments collected.
Pock Marked Po for race info.
Order of the Gauntlet contact none have yet investigated (Alastar Bol).

Hey guys just to let you know, our goblin monk Spike has dropped due to too many games going on.

I'll agree with the others, I doubt it's GM fault. Things have been moving quickly for PbP and I've really enjoyed the setting and adventure.
