It's one of the basic tenets of tabletop: if a given item has an assigned value, or looks like it might have value to somebody, the party will find a way to get it to town.

Now, this thread makes a few assumptions.
1. The party loots EVERYTHING. If the wall has gold leafing, they have scraped it. If the table is made of darkwood, they're packing it. If it's nailed down, they're pulling it up.
2. The party has found a way to sell everything. I don't care if they have to hike to Absalom, they've found someone to buy everything. Additionally, they have, for whatever bizarre reason, decided not to keep anything.
3. Mundane items and all magical items are sold at half value, as per the rules. No diplomacy check has been made to change the value.
4. Commodities (coffee, sugar, etc.,), Spellbooks, art items, gems, etc., are sold for full value.
5. The PCs are unusually kind and haven't killed any friendly NPCs for whatever reason.
6. Any item larger than medium has its base and material value doubled for every size larger than medium. Any item smaller than small has its base and material value halved.
7. Broken items have a value equal to 75% the normal value. Because we're selling items at 50% of their value, this means that broken items are sold for 50 percent of that 75%, or a total of 37.5%.
8. All values are rounded DOWN to the last copper (i.e. Something worth X gold, Y silver and 3.4 copper has its copper value rounded to 3. If it has a copper value of 3.999 bar, it is rounded down to 3.
9. The formula I am using to determine wand value is value*.5*(x/50), where x is the number of remaining charges.
10. I am assuming optimal performance- the bad guys don't get to use their potions or scrolls, and none of them are destroyed.
11. I am using a spellbook cost calculator from a website called Kingdom of Morrain. Sorry if this isn't terribly accurate.

This thread is also using some formatting. (Parentheses) are used to denote per-item value. [Brackets] are used to denote lot value. For items that are singular for their chapter, (parentheses) are skipped. {These thingies} are used for personal notes/commentary as well as adjudication.

If I've done my math funny, or if someone just as crazy and obsessive as I notices a discrepancy between my list and the text, please feel free to yell at me. Also, just in case Paizo censors a certain sword who was born out of wedlock, know that any censorings are a product of that. Further, I am using the SRD names for items so as to avoid takedown notices and good stuff like that.

Without further ado

Actually, I would be interested in seeing the itemized list for the whole path. Just to get an idea how much treasure should be placed.

I am planning on it, but it does get monotonous.

This is a great idea, very thorough.

The list is already full of spoilers so read on with caution.

Missed items, off the top of my head:

Part 3: 4x doses Waters of Lamashtu, counts as unholy water, 100gp

Part 4: advanced war-trained heavy warhorse, at least 300gp.

If it is a total looting you might consider various tools and knives in D10, raziers in D12, possibly 2x kukris with Continual Flame, a nice bed with silk sheets in D5 - there are a lot of good items which aren't priced.

This might seem like nickel and dimeing. Perhaps put an unprecedented total separately. Something like the fine bed with silk sheets for example, it may seem impractical to move, but the PCs are more or less expected to retrieve the giant gold helmet which weighs 300lb.

And practicality is a real problem. Most of this stuff can't be taken. In section 1 alone, all of which takes place within half an hour the PCs cannot possibly carry let alone sell all the crappy Goblin leather armour and dogslicers. Sure, the potions and arrows and Masterwork kit are fair game. Nobody will want the mundane stuff aside from the very goblins the PCs are slaying.

The problem of unpriced stuff gets worse as the adventure proceeds. Consider the contents of the old manor, the townhouse and the warehouse in the next chapter.

Much is just not meant to be sold anyway. The PCs need those amulets for example. There are libraries full of expensive books, but they are far more culturally valuable if the party collects such lore rather than selling every last Thassilonian journal down piecemeal.

With this in mind, it is horribly impractical and in 99% of cases poor roleplay to take and sell everything.

Running total: 35755gp.

Divide between party of four - 8938gp, 7sp, 5cp.

WBL for 4th level at the end of this section is 6000gp.

It looks about right, maybe a bit high. WBL is meant to take into account consumables and running costs and there is a lot of unsellable junk which is classed as treasure. This includes things like 68 dogslicers at 272gp and 43 small gobbo leather at 215gp.

Good stuff OP, more please

1 person marked this as a favorite.

The big issue I have with the unholy water is that the party actually technically has an infinite amount of it. For practical purposes, we'll assume they loot and an move on. Unfortunately, I haven't the foggiest how much those knives would be, I am assuming the kukris are part of the statue (i.e. carven stone), and I don't know enough about the braziers to price them

1. Good stuff. If you have the ambition (mental imbalance) to do the whole AP, go for it. Many running the AP will never need it but every once in a while someone shows up complaining there isn't enough treasure. And it can help GM's know how adding their own treasure might impact things. Or removing it. "No, you can't find anyone willing to give you 4000gp for a magical toothpick." But...

2. This is (and will be if done for the whole AP) CHOCK FULL of spoilers which isn't called out in the thread title and the text isn't tagged. I would think the best place for this would be the Community Created thread which comes with a spoiler warning and is largely the province of GM's. Not sure what to do about it now... I would agree the thread title should suggest there are likely to be spoilers contained within. But that assumes everyone reads thread titles carefully.

3. Should you list in your assumptions this is based on the Anniversary edition (my assumption) and Pathfinder prices? There is a 3.5 (original) version of RotRL.

There are so many silk pillows and bedsheets in some sections of the book it's just not even funny that they have no price listed.

1. This isn't a matter of practicality. Heck, PC are nothing if not impractical. Which is why, if this theoretically loot obsessed party needs to travel to Absalom to sell this stuff, by Iomedae, they will. Also, I happen to have that Gygaxian love of cataloging (read: mental imbalance). The funny thing is, I'm not even running RotRl.

2. I will make a spoiler announcement in my next post listing stuff.

3. That was one of the original assumptions. However, a power surge knocked that out of the post and I forgot it while re-writing it.

Let's see how much stuff they've got.

I must admit I take a short cut with this, but it's worth you doing this as a sanity check for your approach too:

Use the 'character wealth per level chart' to make sure your PC's wealth is roughly where it needs to be. If they end up with too much gold they'll end up overpowered and you'll have to buff the CR levels of the encounters. Fine, but extra work for you.

My short cut has been to hand-wave a bit about the the exact sale prices of each loot haul. Instead I have a running total of each PC's assets and use this chart to either bring them up to appropriate CR / wealth or pull them back down a bit. This is explained with RP stuff like 'no one wants to buy that, you'll have to sell it extra cheap' or 'So and so is really excited to find you selling it and is willing to pay over the odds'.

See the 'Placing treasure: character wealth per level chart, a little way down the page.

In my campaign it turned out my PCs ended up behind the wealth curve, mostly due to being rather generous. I had a powerful NPC who wanted to support their struggle give them each a magic item to help. Each got a different item, tailored to help them in the upcoming encounters, but also of different value, meaning they all ended up with the right wealth for their level and no PC was significantly better equipped than any other.

Very handy list though! Good for finding the specific value of items that PCs take an interest in.

Got to be one of the top three benefits of the internet: where can I find this information about which I am moderately interested but far too lazy to research/develop myself? Voila! The internet gives me access to some poor, obsessed soul that's done it for me.

To Scathach Ulster - if you're doing this and not even running RotRL, you should seek professional help. But not before you finish cataloging the treasure of the AP :)

They've got a forge running in the Clanhold, I just said the advanced ogre running the show was good enough to make masterwork, and the hags were the ones enchanting them. Not that anyone in the party asked, mind. BUT IF THEY HAD.

In case of Grauls, I'd assume its Mammy Graul.

In case of Kreegs, I guess Barl might enchant them? Then again I'm not sure he had item crafting feats and he is the boss so why he would do that. Maybe there is just some master smith ogre in the mines who has that feat that allows you to craft magic weapons with craft weapon :p

Well, there's no way it can be Mammy Graul- she lacks Craft Magic Arms and Armor.

Also, worry not, lovely humans, I am still working on this project!

You. Are. Amazing. My group is just finishing up the first chapter of the first book, and they've already got a couple things written on their character sheets as loot that they haven't appraised yet, like the silver earrings from Glass & Wrath. I was going to have to hunt them down in the book and try to figure out where they came from. But now I don't need to!

I've been reading a lot of (very) old threads today, like, from 2007. So when I got to the end of this one I thought "Oh no! He never finished it!" And then I realized that this is actually an ongoing thing right now. I'm so lucky to be running at the right time!

Thanks for sharing the fruits of your obviously debilitating mental illness with us. It's amazing that this is coming from somebody who isn't even running it. You, sir, are an insane saint among the insane.

These lists are very helpful, thank you for posting. Starting with Thistletop (the party is in the midst of Retaking Rannick at the moment), I've created two spreadsheets for each part of each chapter, one to track XP and one to track treasure. Glad to know I'm not the only crazy one out there, and I really appreciate the resource you're providing to double-check my own numbers. I will try to post a link to the spreadsheets I've done so far around New Year's; I'll have to proof them first to reverse the changes I've made to what's in the AP as written.

It hurts my suspension of disbelief that someone is willing to pay for all those small-sized dogslicers and short bows.

Even if they have to travel to Absalom, by the gods, they'll sell it.

I can totally imagine finding buyers - just not at a shop in town. Take a pile of dogslicers out to the home base of a tribe of goblins and you'll be their favorite arms dealer. It's all about finding the right buyer.

Actually, I wonder.... What if the PCs collected all the dogslicers and horseslicers they could, and then brought them along when they visited Thistletop? They could pose as arms dealers and get invited inside!

Not that this sounds like a GOOD idea, but I bet it's an original one...

I mean, halflings and gnomes exist. You could outfit a whole small-race castle.

This is actually useful to those that use ABP because you can more easily replace the magic items that ABP overrides.

I just hate it when I am a small sized creature and all the loot is for big people. #gnomeproblems.

So. Yeah. Two posts in one day. Turns out my PC becoming a toaster means a bored Scottie, which means accounting. I'm thinking that it goes without saying that I am the accountant in my group.

Just a caveat- it's very likely that I have missed a few things, probably screwed up my math at parts and made other errors. That said, this should be mostly correct. Mostly. After I recover, I am going to do CoCT: Updated.

Just my five cents, after one player asked me if he could sell the protoflesh from Halls of Wrath:

James Jacobs wrote:
In a case like this, where it's unclear what something might be worth, the best bet is to look at table 12–5 in the Core Rulebook and use the value per encounter per the PC's level. So if your party was an average level of, say , 14th at the point they emerged from Runeforge and looked to sell the protoflesh, I'd cost it at about 13,500 gp (which is the value for an encounter at 14th level on the fast XP track, which Runelords uses).

For that one, I would rule that the magic preserving the protoflesh dissipates upon leaving Runeforge, causing it to dust. Similar to the dude.

One way to handwave the idea of there being a market (other than ogres) for +1 Ogre Hooks, and more generally for magic items that you wouldn't think anybody the PCs should want to deal with would buy, is to decide that your version of Golarion includes the Pathfinder-compatible version of Eberron's Artificer class, published in one of the very first third party Pathfinder supplements: Adamant Entertainment's The Tome of Secrets.

Quote:

Salvage: At 5th level, an artificer gains the ability to salvage the gold piece value from a magic item and use those funds to create another magic item. The artificer must spend a day with the item, and he must also have the appropriate item creation feat for the item he is salvaging.

After one day, the item is destroyed and the artificer gains the gp value it took to create the item. This value is cannot be spent as gold, it may only be used in the creation of another magic item.

For example, an artificer wants to salvage a Wand of Lightning Bolts that has 20 charges. Originally created (like all wands) with 50 charges, it required 5625 gp when initially made, or approximately 113 gp (5625 divided by 50) per charge. The artificer is able to recover the gp value from the remaining charges. He gains the value of (113 x 20) 2260 gp to put toward the creation of another item.

If artificers exist in your campaign, they have a use for any magical item the PCs could ever find, as they can salvage the magic from a useless item and imbue it into a useful one.

Did you miss an artifact in "The Scribbler's Rhyme?" You have the Anathema Archive in "Into the Valley of the Black Tower," after which the running total includes "1 Artifact" until "The Scribbler's Rhyme," where you list one more artifact, the Revelation Quill, but the running total changes to include "+ 3 Artifacts."

See his post just before the Sins of the Saviors entry. There he notes that he missed an artifact (the Runeslave Cauldron) in the Ancient Library section for Fortress of the Stone Giants. So technically after Book 4 the party has two artifacts.
