Another cool idea, though you moved away from my original captive plan. I suppose that's okay as long as you still have a shared race in common with the other PCs. If I accept you into the campaign I want you to put a lot of effort into defining your relationship to the other test subjects, because you won't have that shared background of coming from their town.Your abilities as a healer probably availed you to Doctor Khan as someone who would work recovery duty for the test subjects after the experiments were concluded for the day. Healing the other tieflings up so they can be
improvedexperimented ontortured again the following day.Also you may spend your 6000 starting gold freely. We'll just refluff it to mean that Doctor Khan provided you with that equipment when the campaign begins.
I can re-fluff it some to fit changes. Wasn't too sure how you would feel about her being taken when she was real young, but i thought I'd give it a shot. Who's to say she wasn't originally from the same village? She might remember the name but not much else. Though this way she's very much tied to the other characters since she is likely the one healing them at the end of the day. I will add the connection to Doctor Khan as part of her story and go into more detail there.

Indeed. It's entirely plausible that the drow slaving caravan was visiting Gundrun as part of a larger flesh trading route, after all, and it you were part of the last cycle of captures to happen in that town. That actually opens up interesting new opportunities to include other former Gundrun victims in Chaulnazeen. It also allows for PCs who are selected in the current party to have known you as a child and felt traumatized by your capture and subsequent role in their captivity.

Daniel: though I did divide applicants by role, don't expect me to be adopting a "5-man party comp" for the group. In case it isn't blindingly obvious by now, roleplaying's going to be the most critical aspect of gameplay in this campaign, with combat a close second - so if my ideal mix of personalities happens to include 3 brutes and 1 clergy (hypothetical example), so be it. "When all you've got is a hammer...everything looks like a nail."
I'd rather you apply with a character whose personality and attitude is just awesome for you to want to play, than try to create a character to mix and match with other applicants and then try to add a backstory as an afterthought. Y'know? :) That said, you can still revise what character you want to apply with if you wish. There's still time.

Here's Siri, dubbed by the drow "The Serpent Queen", daughter of Zuhra Aponavicius. I've never run a synthesist before, but it works well for the concept and should at least be powerful defensively. I envisage her as a secondary combatant and secondary arcanist, probably dropping a spell before getting into combat. She should also make an incredible face, since she should be rocking a diplomacy in the low twenties.
The powerful marilith demon Zuhra Aponavicius rules the city of Drezen in the Worldwound. She is one of the two most powerful of the Worldwound's many warlords—the other is the balor Khorramzadeh, known as the Storm King.[1]
She is considered to be a bloodthirsty general even by demonic standards, appearing to be indifferent to the casualty level among her own forces provided enemies are also dying.
Historically, the demonic forces of the Worldwound were driven back by what came to be known as the First Mendevian Crusade. When the crusaders grew complacent, the demons counter-attacked, regaining lost territory and then expanding beyond their previous borders. Zuhra commanded the forces which captured the crusader citadel of Drezen; it has been her stronghold ever since.[2]
I believe that Drezen is supposed to get retaken in Wrath of the Righteous, maybe this was enabled in part because of the drow using Siri to leech her mother's power.
But demons have little care for weak offspring, and from the beginning Siri was weak, beautiful, but frail and clumsy. She survived by her wits and her charm, relying upon the strength of others and turning her antagonizers against one another as best she could.
But despite her silver tongue, she too often became plaything to the dark and terrible things that surrounded her and finally fled Drezen still a child desperately hoping for something more. Fortunately near death simply from exposure to the harsh environment of the World Wound she was happened upon by a party of retreating crusaders. Only pity, and her ethereal beauty saved her, as instead of killing her the crusaders dumped her in Gundrun.
When she came to she had already been adopted by Gelsa the midwife, a widow whose own tainted blood rendered her sympathetic to the serpent tailed girls plight. Gelsa was stern, but fair, and soon became more family to Siri than anyone she had known.
She had a relatively normal life, long sweeping dresses hid her tail for the most part, and she was beautiful and charming. For the first time she had true friends, and was truly happy helping Gelsa bring life into the world. She even fell in love with a likely young smith named Danith.
But her beauty was a double edged sword, as attracted the attentions of the son of Gundrun's ruler. Darsiss Clefthorn took her rejections poorly, and shortly after turning him down Siri's perfect life was plunged back into darkness as she was sold to the drow.
Then there was only pain and horror, and she found herself linking with the terrible mind of her Marilith mother. The drow were somehow able to manipulate their blood bond to leech power from her mother, and every time a little something more of the demon stayed with Siri, changing her.
Now she spends almost all of her time in a form that parodies her mothers, a perfect miniature Marilith. She has found herself engaged in numerous displays, paraded at parties, and forced to slaughter lesser slaves with her blades, for the drow value powerful females and few things encapsulate that better than the Marilith.
And the years of renewed pain and terror have taught Siri, hardened her, the world is a place of nightmares, with her time in Gundrun a fragile dream. Only the strong can hope to enjoy life, so she must become strong.

Beleste, the Demon-Spawn Tiefling Breaker Barbarian, is a man of great stature. Standing just over seven feet tall, with muscles to rival those of a small giant, he makes for an imposing figure without his gear. Before the experimentation, Beleste had shown little in terms of his fiendish ancestry beyond the small horns that rested upon head. However, after Doctor Khan's experimentation, Beleste seemed to show little of his once human demeanor beyond the general anatomy of his body. Now he bore more resemblance to a minotaur with his bull-like head, fur covered arms and legs, and hooved feet.
While he is still considered little more than a slave, Beleste has proven himself a capable bodyguard for his house and has been rewarded to some degree by being allowed to keep some of the equipment his fallen foes wielded. Among these items are a large longsword and spiked steel shield that no normal man could wield without the aid of magic. However, through his heritage and experiments of Doctor Khan, Beleste makes use of these unique items with ease.
Some basic descriptions of the character. I need to round it out and polish it, but it gives a general concept of the character. As I mentioned before, he will be lacking any real length of horn, but upon entering into a rage they will grow to grant him a devilish appearance and the benefits of a gore attack. Beyond that he wears a lamellar vest to protect his chest, the only part of his body that appears to not be covered in fur at this point in time, and wields a large longsword and shield that are of demonic make.

Updated Backstory Fluff for Zayva.
Zayva was born to single mother in a small village in Gundrun, though she does not remember or think much about her home village anymore. When she was only physically the age of three, her mother became deathly sick. This was the first time Zayva's ability to see the state of a soul manifested. She saw her mother was dying, and all she could do was watch. It changed her. It was not long after this point that she never saw her home again. She was taken as soon as the grieving period was over in the dead of night. Stolen, bought and sold, Zayva's new life was very different from the one she had known with her mother. Her friends where gone and she no longer had a family. She eventually lost track of time among the experiments she underwent. She witnessed many others come and go from the labs, patients and drow alike, viewing the different states of their souls.
Though all of this, she changed. Her physical appearance morphed and grew. Between her physically maturing and all the experiments she was nearly unrecognizable from the child she had been. Her name, Zayva, was one of the few things she remembered from before, along with a handful of times with her mother, and the names of a couple kids. The rest was gone between the young age of her abduction, the pain, drugs and time. This means she has no idea of her age, and has forgotten when her birthday even is to try to calculate her age, not that it matters to her. She saw other subjects that had arrived at the same time she had, change and, for most, even die. The observing of so many deaths had called to something within her, a power had awoken. She didn't know what it was, but for some reason she clung to this concept of life. It brought her warmth and comfort. She pulled on that power inside to heal others, to help preserve the lives that she saw being taken in front of her. To live, meant to have more chances to change things, to not give up. For some, it might have been cruel that she made them live longer, but she couldn't bare the thought of someone just giving up on life. That didn't mean she wouldn't kill if things came down to that. If the killing of another would keep others alive and safe, she was not above the act. She knew all life could not be saved, but she wished to try.
Her gift of healing has not come without its consequences, in times of great stress, such as combat, she loses her ability to understand anything but Infernal, the language of devils. She has learned to live with this over the years and manages for the most part. But it has also come with some perks. When the Drow discovered her abilities and talents with healing, they placed her under Doctor Khan. She was to heal and tend to the other subjects at the end of each day. This is so that the subjects are ready for a fresh start the next day. Zayva doesn't mind healing the others, even if it means they will be subjected to more experiments, improvements and tortures the next day. Zayva enjoyed working this job, since it allowed her to give life back to the others there. She also got to meet many of the other subjects, keeping her from being in seclusion like some of them.
Before she was brought to work under Doctor Khan, she was not always the most compliant. She would follow the order, but would her own way to meet it. To her, as long as she meets their end goal of the order, it doesn't matter how she gets there. Because of her way of completing tasks, they would punish her by zapping her with electricity. She has developed a small resistance to electricity because of this, and still continues to go about her own way of following their orders. This does not occur as often as it used too because she currently enjoys her job of healing. She can be, and has in the past been, very stubborn when she sets her mind to something. This also lead to a few electric shock punishments.

On second thought, I'll give you all spiderling language grafts. During part of the experiments they performed on you, they slowly lowered spider hatchlings onto your eyeballs. The venom the spiders subsequently injected into you was infused with unholy Lolthian magic, which taught you all Undercommon so you may more adequately serve your masters.

So.... my nap gave me an idea! You like interconnected PC's. Would we be able to develop any existing connections with any of the other applicants? Maybe they were forced to fight but couldn't kill each other, or maybe (give that he has access to such powers and maybe a wand) my character is forced to heal some of the others. Maybe they're run through similar experiments together for some reason. Etc.

Well I don't mind Aren and Zayva knowing each other. Currently Zayva works as a healer to fix up the other subjects at the end of the day. Not sure if we would work together as healers or not. Or perhaps she healed you after one brutal day? She's been owned by the Drow a really long time, since she was physically about 3-4 years old. So she was likely one of the first to vanish.

And I'd imagine probably both! Aren's not as skilled a healer as Kana without a wand of cure something, but he does have the ability to heal some injuries (especially now a days since he has deaths kiss). And I'd also imagine some of the experiments on him have brought him veeeeery close to death. Perhaps even intentionally. XD

Considering my character never speaks, it would be ideal if she knew someone before all this happened. If Alec or whomever could also know Drow sign language it would make it easier for her to keep her vow and not speak. I know that Alec and I will be able to come up with something. If anyone else thinks we can link that be awesome!

Aren's got an extra language I haven't chosen yet. If the Dm will let me I could say he's been watching them use sign language over the years and picked it up. Or I could switch over a skill point for it... hmm...
Either way, its up to the DM, but you could definitely say Aren and Alaria might know each other. What sort of experiments did she go through that they might have in common, you think? Maybe just trials to kill people and test what they can do? Aren would have to learn selective channeling somehow. XD

I wanted to have someone be her close friend before she was stolen in the night. So them knowing each other as children would work out nicely ^^ She is from a single parent home too, just her mother. And it was after the proper grieving time for her mother that she was gone, without a trace.
And since her job is to patch them up so they can be ready for the next day... I imagine she did so often for Aren. Perhaps they had him assist since they both have the ability to see the state of a soul, though they have gone more opposite in what they can do. Plus she can stabilize someone with just a touch.
@Aren Noticed you didn't take either Abyssal or Infernal. You get one of the two as a race language (unless i missed something that eliminated that)

@Aren: If you think about it, the same way I got my tail could be the way you got smoke breath. Perhaps they were trying a potion or magic that altered the makeup of our bodies and we had different reactions to it. Or perhaps when we were being tested for strength, we had to fight each other, but one of us did something honorable and refused to fight after a certain point and got punished for it, creating a type of loyalty or respect for that person. If DM allows. What do you think? It would also be cool if we were able to learn drow sign together.

The smoke breath... I know why he has it but not how he got it if that makes sense, so that could work.
And I can... probably see my character pretending to be honorable. XD He's really not at all, and doesn't care much for it, but he's also the type to go the extra length to make friends simply because friends are useful. He's not, by any means, a nice character. But he certainly -seems- like he is. So I wouldn't think it too farfetched that he refused to fight your character after a certain point, if you don't mind the fact that he did it more to gain her trust then to actually be honorable.

Hmm... the only problem with her refusing to kill him is Aren would be largely indifferent about it so it'd be just a moment of 'hey, I fought her once. oh well'. XD Perhaps, midway through the fight, she chooses to stop fighting and, seeing an opportunity, he does to instead of taking the chance to kill her?
By the way, he largely fights with his powers. The experiments have left him physically pretty weak.

Most likely Muhoro has needed the healing powers of Zayva, and maybe even Aren. Being a warrior he has probably fought or knows about the other warriors, and having some magical abilities, he has contact with the magicians in the group. Could be a bridge between the brains and the brawn of the group.....

Yeah, Aren was often on the brink, though most of his injuries are a bit odd considering they come from negative energy. Muscles torn apart, internal organs failing, etc. Nothing cure light wounds can't heal, just a different representation of the damage it does. XD
I actually did not realize it! So Aren will have four languages total. Sweet.
And I'm not sure what the time frame for the game is, but it could be possible that Aren knew her when he was like 8? He'd be interested in another tiefling friend, and back then he wasn't nearly as creepy or evil. Meeting again during the experiments will be interesting. XD
Also, that is really an interesting thought! They both went through experiments because of their ability to see the state of souls, but both went in completely opposite directions. Maybe to the point where they've even been tested against each other?

I'd imagine Aren would use any healing duty he was given to try and forge alliances with other tieflings. A sort of 'we're both slaves, we're both allies, and I can help' kind of deal.

Muhoro was born in far off Minkai, near the Forest of Spirits. His mother was a normal commoner, with uncommon beauty who had the misfortune of being seduced by one of the many Kami of the forest. While most Kami are neutral to the world around them, a few are malevolent, and it was one of these evil spirits that took advantage of the beautiful girl.
Once born, and the true nature of his parentage was discovered, he and his mother were forced from the village. It was lucky for them that her beauty was so great that she was able to talk a travelling merchant into taking the two of them over the Crown of the World, and into the lands of Avistan.
While travelling through the far northern Realm of the Mammoth Lords, the secret of his heritage was discovered. Left unattended for only a few moments, he was spotted by a number of locals. These people, fearful as to what he might be, demanded the merchant to either cast out his mother or face the local jarl's wrath.
Travelling across the Tusk Mountains, the mother and child soon came to the lands of the Worldwound. They kept to the edge of the mountains, but life was harsh, and help nonexistent. It was in these wilds, while still just a young boy, that his mother passed away. Whether it was from hunger, the elements or just the loss of the will to live, his mother slowly slipped into a catatonic state and soon dies.
Left alone, the young tiefling felt the pull of his otherworldly father to travel closer to the blight called the Worldwound. He soon found himself in the small settlement of Gundrun, where he discovered others cursed like him. The small community of Tieflings took the boy in and cared for him. His fledgling skills with magic were encouraged, and he was just beginning to make feel like he belonged.
This all changed when he was taken from his room at his masters' home. Tied up and blindfolded, he was hustled into the back of a wagon with several others. For many long days he was kept with these others, bound and blinded. Food and water came sporadically, and soon time lost all meaning. Other than short stops, where they were allowed to stretch and relieve themselves, the captives were kept in the wagon. The sounds and smells were terrifying, as were their unseen captives. Several did not make it, and their bodies were sometimes left in the wagon until the smell made all sick. Finally the wagon ride came to an end, and the real torture began.

She could porbably hurt him if she could get past his AC. He would be tough though, considering her touch is not that great and your character can weat medium armor. She wouldnt try and kill you, she would just move around a lot. XD Im going for shadowdancer after 5. She will be everything I want. One of my dream characters.
In summary, if she got lucky, she could be the one doing the sparing of life stuff. Otherwise, it would be tough with your magic. :P

I can see Muhoro looking for someone to connect with. Having magic and being a warrior places him on the outside of two different groups, so any chance of connecting would be worth it to him...

Hmmm.... perhaps the experimental idea is a better one then? No need to try and bend our characters for the idea, as cool as it is, and you should probably save it for another character in this group!

And she would have been curious too. I feel she was actually older than 3-4 when she was taken, but only that age physically since tieflings reach maturity slower. What if Zayva's mother let him stay with them? as long as he helped out. I see her mother as not being hatful of tieflings, because the are children and people too. So when she passed away, not only did he lose his home again, but his friend vanished in the middle of the night not long after with no clues left about what happened to her.
Then, years later, he meets a female tiefling with the same name as his friend. And after looking real close, her features look similar too. Though it could be hard to tell since it has been so long and she's physically changed. That would be such an interesting interaction when the first meet up again.

Watch her try to mother you because she tends to you so often XD I picture her as a mothering/caring sort. She's become a caretaker because of what she can do, and how closely life is tied to her. And she is friendly to the others there, because why give up on life? Just because it's not great doesn't mean you should give up.
