Outstanding Fan additons to Rise of the Runelords

5/5

This issue is crammed full of outstanding additions to the game themed around the Rise of the Runelords Adventure Path.

As always there are new magic items, spells, classes, encounters, adventures, stories, monsters and other interesting things.

The great thing is that most of the articles are not tied to the AP. Almost everything is very usable outside of a campaign focusing on the Runelords.

To me a few things stand out. The Swallowtail games, the goblin magic items, and the Chopper's Isle adventure. That's not to say everything isn't good. This issue will help your players fall in love with Sandpoint more than ever.

Amazing!

5/5

If you are a GM, and you would like to play the 1st adventure of Rise of the Runelord... this is a must!

I never refuse free stuff, and this 90-pages fanzine was crucial with its details and hints at the beginning of the campaign. Thanks to this fanzine (Swallowtail Festival Games and The Lure of Greed were much appreciated by the party), my PCs loves Sandpoint and its inhabitants ... thus having good reasons to protect them from those who want to threaten the town!

w00t! It's finally here! Big congrats and thanks to Tim, Dain, the writers, the artists, the editors, and everyone involved in the massive undertaking!

If any downloaders (or PaizoCon attendees wit print copies) have the time and inclination, might you consider leaving a review/feedback for Tim and the Gang?

...

And now, off to plot submissions for Wayfinder #8. Mwah-ha-ha-ha-ha!

Yay! Looks like some good stuff in this issue, looking forward to digging into it.

Just flicked through and read a few articles.

Amazing. Simply amazing.

Right, back to reading...

Definitely one of the better issues. Still need in-depth analysis to figure out if it's the best Wayfinder yet or not.

But, come on, it's FREE. Everyone on the boards should download it.

*Holds downloaded copy tightly.* I haven't read it all yet, or in depth, but it looks very good so far.

Can anyone tell me what the usefulness of the skindancer's deadly flesh and poison is? It seems EXTREMELY circumstantial. Like, only after your dead and being eaten, or a creature swallow's you whole. Unless you've got a campaign that's full of those types, or if it's too subtle in my reading and it also affects those with bite attacks too, it seems fairly worthless. Unless you're an assassin who skins themself alive (in which case I really hope you've got some troll blood to regenerate that), and puts it in the king's food, chances are these abilities will never come up.

It has neat flavour? (pun intended). I suppose the big question is whether it affects bite attacks.

OOOOOH, OOOOOH! I can answer this one!

Yep, it was intended to be very circumstantial. Enough to dissuade predators from attempting to make a meal of one, but not powerful enough to stop a predator from killing one with tooth and claws (which I felt would be overpowered). I definitely didn't want it to be as good as the vishkanya's toxic blood & spit in Bestiary 3. It was also an attempted defense to stop one particular Darklands critter from OmNomNoming on skindancer brains. There was more to it originally, but I had to squeeze it in under 750 words, and it had to be rewritten a bit (and something else had to get cut.)

So yeah, you can bite/maul/shred them all you want, just don't swallow.

Besides, I had to leave some weird hooks to explore later. ;)

I want a monster with the OmNomNoming ability!

Honestly, I'd give it a racial feat to stack with the deadly flesh so that it did affect anyone who bit it, making it vulnerable to the poison. Maybe even a claw attack has a 50% chance of being affected (75% if the creature rends) as well. If for no other reason than to make it less circumstantial, and more versatile for players to actually want to use it.

Heh, heh, heh... oh there is so much more I have written on them (and their ammonoid kin), but just wasn't enough space.

Apologies for monopolizing the thread.

This demands a sequel section in the next magazine, or first billing in a 3pp Advanced Race Guide book.

Silver Crusade

Skimmed to get a feel (as I always do with Wayfinder) and this one seems like the tight theme helped it immensely. I always appreciate Wayfinder issues as they are acts of love from the community, but this one feels special.

What's the theme?

Dark Archive

The theme is in the back of Wayfinder #7. I believe it is Coastal regions but I need to double check.

Oceans of Golarion.

Scarab Sages

That's OK, I was just jesting.
At least give him time to come back from the con, before we start on issue 8...

Silver Crusade

Just downloaded it. Got more to say about it, but for now:

Skindancers are definitely going to be a player option if I run Shattered Star.

The Charnel Pit definitely would have been used the last campaign I ran if time travel were readily available. :)

The fire feats are very, very cool. Especially the mini-wall of fire one!

I just downloaded and have a question concerning the prestige class "The Fili".

"She treats her fili levels as druid levels for the purpose of Wild Empathy."

What about Rangers? At 8th level they would meet the pre-reqs of 2nd level divine spells and wild empathy class ability. So should that clause say "druid or ranger levels"?

Hey Papa-DRB, Druid and Ranger levels stack for wild empathy IIRC so it really doesn't matter what the fili levels count as because they should stack with whatever ranks of wild empathy you already have. However if this isn't the case then consider that an errata. The spirit of the class was to allow the player to continue to advance those skills.

One of the difficulties with putting together a tight prestige class like this is the word count. It's hard to get everything you want within the space allowed. My editor (Ryan Costello, Jr.) had this at exactly 750 words so adding even the "or ranger" you suggested would have put us over :)

I hope that helps and if you have any other questions I'd be glad to help.

Thank you for the response and that was the only question.

The DM is a stickler for the rules, so the clarification helps.....

ps. I *really* like this class! It has just made my top 3 fun classes to play.

Haha, awesome! I'm really hoping people have fun with the goblin items- make sure to let me know how PCs get sickened by Crunchy-Pickled-Bird-Snacks! I'll hopefully have more time to digest this issue once I make it home from PaizoCon...

I adored the Crunchy-Pickled-Bird-Snacks, though I think I may implement them as a not-just-for-goblins-anymore treat. I'm thinking apothecaries in Tian Xia may have them, tribesfolk in the Mwangi Expanse, and of course wizards who originally had them as exotic curios and/or hazing items, only to find that they're surprisingly tasty once you get used to them. But only goblins make the really good ones so they're a quest item for the mad wizard.

I'm going to spend more time with it this week. I loved the fart joke though. It's a classic brought up to date with Pathfinder. I'm on Ambien. I should go to sleep before I make less sense. Party on dudes. Party on.

So much awesomeness!
Thanks PFU for bringing me (among others) another fantastic issue of Wayfinder!

Well done to everyone who contributed to this fine product. Great work from Tim and the edit and layout team who did such a great job of pulling the submissions into their published form.

I want to thank the great artists who made my submissions look completely awesome:
- Thanks to Tanyaporn 'Yuikami, The Fool' Sangsnit for the artwork on The Hag and the Seeker
- Thanks to SMA for the artwork on the Flameshaped Skimmer and Brute
- I can't read the signature on the portrait of Xerdigris, but thanks, I love it!
- And I also can't read the signature on the Runespinner, but thank you!

Tim, if you could pass my thanks on to the editors and artists I'd be grateful.

Cheers!

Thanks for all the great response, everyone!

If you are reading this thread, and have downloaded and read (or are still reading!) the issue, PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE consider posting a review, or just making a post in this thread giving our authors and artists some desperately wanted FEEDBACK.

Feedback is REALLY important. It 1) lets our contributors know the people really ARE seeing their work, and 2) lets our contributors know what people think of their work. ESSENTIAL!

Feedback is kind of a validation. And it makes folks feel good. And it makes folks want to contribute again. So, please consider giving some.

ALSO, please spread the word! More readers for Wayfinder is GOOD for Wayfinder, and good for the Paizo community.

Great!

Now, addressing those questions about "who did my art?"
SMA is Stephen McAndrews
Xerdigris was illustrated by Alberto Ortiz León and colored by Karla Yanin Salas Orozco.
Runespinner was illustrated by Todd Westcot!

And Tanya 'Yuikami, The Fool' Sangsnit illustrated "The Hag and the Seeker," Neil Spicer's PC "Vicinder" (a pdf extra) and "The Jinx" article.

I'll try and make another post soon with links to all the artists' gallery pages....

Awesome! My family was hounding me for copies of my first published work and a PDF is perfect for this. I didn't want to sneak 20 copies out of the Con.

Great stuff! I really liked the festival games and the Goblin magic items. I honestly have read everything in detail yet, so I am sure there are more golden nuggets in there!

Maybe it'll save you a bit of time: I started an artist list here in the comments (before getting sidetracked/swamped).

Hey Tim, perhaps you're not the one to ask about this, but how can we get our contributor's copy? I'm currently a subscriber to Pathfinder but I'm not sure if I want this next adventure path. Do you think it's likely that the wayfinder will be bundled with our pathfinder subscription again and do you think it's likely to be mailed out next month?

I should mention that this PDF version features everything contained in the printed version handed out at PaizoCon 2012 PLUS additional, PDF-only content, including:

  • A collection of Pathfinder themed poetry
  • An Art Gallery of illustrations by Pathfinder fans (including a spectacular piece by our cover artist, Frank Hessefort, depicting Amiri!)
  • A collection of six new pre-generated player characters (PCs) created by Neil Spicer for use in his mini-adventure, The Lure of Greed, and illustrated by our artists!

I really liked this issue a lot. I do have one critic though. I was planning to use Melissa as a NPC contact in my current game. Which has a PC witch it in. My critic is it only listed her prepared spells and not her known spells. I know I can do that on my own, but I can do full NPC's on my own too. So while she is still nice and useful with a nice plot hook, having known spells listed would have helped.

Timitius, thanks for the hard work in putting it together. I was really pleased to see my first work in print as it were. I am thrilled with the artwork for the goblin bean-bags, the artwork was a huge surprise. Now I need to find some time to read through the rest of the great stuff in the issue.

Hi Dark_Mistress. I'm deeply pleased that you want to use Melissa in your campaign. I did generate a full set of spells known for her, but decided to cut it for word count.

I can dig out that notebook and post the list here if you want to see my version, or I hope I included enough character flavor for Melissa that you can select some flavorful spells yourself.

Let me know!

Cheers, Will

I believe I have a parcel ready to go, that can still be altered.

Would it be possible to slip Chris Leaper's copy in there? (artist on page 69)
I know he doesn't have a subscription, and he lives 5 minutes from me (one street down from my old house!).
