Pathfinder Battles Preview: Around the Horn(s)

As I write this, the brand new Legends of Golarion set is in retail stores and in the hands of or on the way to subscribers. WizKids is hard at work on the next set, January's Wrath of the Righteous, and today they've also announced the NEXT full set in the Pathfinder Battles line, Reign of Winter. Reign of Winter is set to release in April, and will contain 55 figures inspired by that wintry Adventure Path. It will also include a brand new Gargantuan White Dragon figure as a promotional case incentive piece, but I'll talk more about that when I have an actual image to show you. Suffice it to say for now that the figure will be based on one of the most gorgeous and impressive pieces of draconic art in Paizo's arsenal of awesome art.

But April is a long way away, and we've still got a ton of Wrath of the Righteous figures to preview before January. So let's get this demon-show on the left-hand path, shall we?

This week I want to focus primarily on Baphomet, demon lord of beasts and labyrinths. This creature has a long history in fantasy gaming, and an even longer history in real world mythology. Golarion's version mixes elements of the beast's occult design (by way of Eliphas Levi) with Baphomet's traditional role as founder of the minotaur race to create one of the major antagonists of the Wrath of the Righteous Adventure Path. I've already revealed a look at the unpainted Baphomet sculpt, but today I'm pleased to reveal the creature's wicked paint master.

Baphomet is a (very) Large, rare figure.

And since Baphomet is the Lord of Minotaurs, it only made sense to include a new Minotaur in this set. We previously released a Minotaur in our very first set, Heroes & Monsters. And while that version was perfectly fine, he always seemed a bit runty to me, so I decided to take this opportunity to add a new one to the line. This new Minotaur is a Large, uncommon figure.

Speaking of minotaurs, here we have Hepzamirah, the Daughter of Baphomet and an imposing enemy in her own right. A unique nephilim NPC, Hepzamirah is one of Baphomet's most favored servants and a major antagonist in the Wrath of the Righteous campaign. She could easily double as some sort of half-minotaur or unique demon as well. The sculpt on this figure is absolutely incredible. Hepzamirah is a Large, rare figure.

This here is Minagho, a lilitu demon rogue who serves as one of the key villains of the Adventure Path. She doesn't have much to do with Baphomet, but she does have horns, so I'm including her in this week's batch. The eyeless Lilitu demons are born from foul spirits of temptation, and this one in particular has specialized in the corruption of faith. Minagho is a Medium, rare figure.

Every evil demon lord needs a cultist. In the case of Baphomet, they tend to take the form of warriors wearing horned helmets and wielding elaborate pole arms. This evil figure will help to fill out your Abyssal armies, but also doubles as a credible female pole-arm-wielding player character or even a non-evil soldier (if you absolutely must). The Baphomet Cultist is a Medium, common figure.

Last up this week is the Deskari Cultist, a scythe-wielding maniac who has sworn his eternal soul to Deskari, demon lord of locusts (more on him in a future preview). This figure also lacks horns, but he makes up for it with elaborate engravings on his chitinous armor. He's cool, he's Medium, and he's common.

And that's it for this week. Tune in next Friday for another look at upcoming figures from the Pathfinder Battles line!

Baphomet and Daughter of Baphomet. My players will be nervous when they see this.

Looking good.

And Reign of Winter is next! YES!

WOW. Just Wow. I loved the unpainted Baphomet, now I'm really impressed. The levels of detail is awe inspiring and I hope the production figures capture the look and detail. Is that head piece transparent plastic?

Fantastic minotaur. Surpasses the H&M one - which I liked.

Was curious as to how Hepzamirah would look. Very intimidating, looks to be on the larger end of large.

Minagho is the only one I'm a bit out on. I'm glad the horns are on the side of the head and not coming out of the eye sockets.

The two cultists are awesome and I'd be glad to get them in big numbers. The detail is great and I'm so glad we get both demon lords followers rather than just a generic cultist. I hope the Baphomet glaive isn't too flimsy, nothing worse than a cultist with floppy glaive syndrome.

As for next set - does this mean we'll see some WWII earth minis - soldiers and the like?

Also while I like the idea of a garg white, and it compliments the enc pack nicely to fill out nearly all the sizes, are we going to see non-dragon incentives - I know we have the Rune Giant and Deskari but I really hanging out for some other great unique paizo gargantuans - you have so many. Mind you I suppose we only have the black and red to go among the classic chromatics.

Erik, you know what I expect from you in Reign of Winter.
Muskets, muskets, muskets ~

All the big minis are awesome, and I especially like getting female monsters to complement the male-heavy contingents of existing minis. But for me the most exciting piece in this reveal is the cultist with the scythe. I think that's only the second PPM with a scythe I ever remember seeing. (The Cleric of Nerull is the only other one I remember, from an early DDM set.) That's fabulous!

There was a peasant in an early DDM set (Human commoner from harbinger - the first DDM), looks a little like a cultist, if you squint...in poor light...while distracted. This one is so much better.

I just hope the paint jobs are up to the minis - the baphomet cultist shares a lot of features with the night of Ozem form Legends and while I thought the sculpt was good on that mini, it was really let down by paint. I so want this cultist to fare better.

These look great! And excited about Reign of Winter!

Wow these are all really cool looking! Just one thing - I think the title is a little off , it says PathPathfinder.

I love most of them. I only wish the Baphomet mini was huge. I'm happy that at least it's said to be a very large, large! I guess that's good, however, in the end I still can't justify this as my minotaur god. I LOVE minotaur's so my opinion really matters :)

Very excited by these minis!

Baphomet is totally metal. I can't wait to see his artwork D:

Yay scythes! Seems like it wouldn't take much to use that guy as a cultist of Urgathoa.

You're absolutely right, I forgot about the Human Commoner. And you're also right, this is so much better!

I want that Baphomet mini to sit on my desk. That's just too cool.

Wow, that Baphomet Cultist. I really, really hope that it turns out better than last set, because I need that (common) mini...

Wait! Is Baphomet wielding a glaive? If he is, that is one awesome glaive!

The Redcap from Shattered Star(?) has one as well.

Runelords, but yes.

From the flaming sconse on the top of its head, to the downward pointing Star, the intricate sash, and the large mancatcher or partisan style polearm, this does look like the real world cultic image coming to life. I look forward to reading its stats. This one could potentially be one of the great challenges in fantasy RPG gaming.

Seeing a female in other forms is nice to see. Hepzamirah is a welcome addition. The paint job on this master is fantastic. You can see a lot of details in this fantastic sculpt. Has there been a female minotaur made before in PPMs?

The Minotaur has a very classic look. King Minos would be proud. I look forward to a big fight with eight to ten Minotaurs on the map.

Minagho definitely has that Demon look. The midnight bluish color of the armor is just right for a Rogue. Paint some eyes on it, and you have a nice Tiefling mini too.

The Baphomet Cultist may be one of my favorites. The black breastplate with gold trim, the truly exotic polearm, and then make it a female all adds to the plusses to this mini. This would make a good looking city guard to some extra-planar city.

The green armor, the scythe, makes this bearded Deskari Cultist a nice addition. Not since corn-fed Fred, Human Commoner, from way back to Harbinger have we seen a main line combatant with a scythe. {The Cleric of Nerull from Dragoneye was more of a leader or captain type.} I could see some wanting this Deskari Cultist as a scythe wielding PC.

Another good looking preview. Thanks!

If that minotaur looks near as good pulled from the booster as it does in the picture, then we have a definite winner. Just make sure the weapon is pitifully small like the mini from GoL.

Nice share. I really hope the Baphomet comes out of the box close to this photo. I like the whole figure, the details, the colors, everything. :-)

Wow - Baphomet, the minotaur and the cultist of Baphomet are simply amazing. Baphomet, in particular, looks fantastic!!

I like Hepzamirah's weapon, paint scheme, and overall demeanor; however, her mouth looks a little off. I'll wait until I see her in person to pass final judgment.

Minagho, on the other hand, feels like a bit of a miss to me. I've yet to see how she's depicted in WotR, but the illustration in the Worldwound book had a certain malevolence to it that the mini just isn't conveying.

The cultist of Deskari looks good. Not fantastic, but a solid piece nonetheless. Really looking forward to this set!

Fixed a typo in the title.

Oy.

A set in August, a set in October, a set in December and a set in January?

That's sets in 4 out of 6 months, and with what I've been hearing about the paintwork on the most recent set, do they really want to be cramming yet another one out the door so soon? Perhaps they should take a breather.

(never mind the financial pain of four sets in six months!)

Wrath of the Righteous was bumped from December to January, and Reign of Winter is due to be released in April.

(*phew*)

My kids will get a Christmas after all :)

Man.. so many sets are coming out in such a rapid pace its about 1 set every quarter.

Guys you should really slow down on these mini's or we're going to glut the market where folks wont be able to buy all the sets because too many are coming out so fast.

$400 is still a decent amount of money for the majority of gamers. So it may come down to buying mini's or PFRPG books for many people.

Can we update the store to reflect the change of this set's release date?

Right now, it's still being listed in my December subscription

Wow! This was an AWESOME inaugural preview for the Wrath of the Righteous PF Battles set ... I've recently been offered a promotion at work and I may be able to subscribe (again) to the PF Battles minis! (Time will tell).

I am particularly excited about the April set being "Reign of Winter"!!
(As that is the next AP I plan to GM). Maybe I'll take my time completing "Rise of the Runelords" or perhaps I'll "play around" with getting the PCs to 20th level ... give myself time for the "Reign of Winter" miniatures to arrive. :)

All in all - very pleased and excited for the forthcoming sets.

Now - if Erik Mona could tell me that Jade Regent is going to be getting a PF Battles miniature set ... I'll be absolutely over the moon! :)
