Conquest Day

Monday, April 2, 2012

I almost lined this holiday boon up perfectly with its in-game date and real-world date. When I realized it was my 6-month anniversary (wow, time flies), I was torn. What better way to celebrate than to help Pathfinders fight undead? But I felt my state of PFS blog was slightly more important, so I delayed this holiday blog for a week.

Managing Editor F. Wesley Schneider wrote the description below of Conquest Day, and where you’ll also find a special Pathfinder Society Chronicle sheet you can download and apply to a Pathfinder Society character. Conquest Day is mentioned on page 248 of The Inner Sea World Guide.

Every year, on the 26th of Pharast, Elder Architect Oblosk—oldest member of Nex’s Council of Three and Nine—ascends to the highest balconies of the Bandeshar in Quantium. In a voice made thunderous by the platform’s magic, the wizened pech councilman spends the hours from dusk to just past noon enumerating the atrocities committed by the necromancers of Geb upon the people of Nex, culminating with the disappearance of the archwizard Nex himself. At the conclusion of this record of national wounds, the country’s eleven other council members join Oblosk in renewing their yearly vow to neither forget nor forgive the Gebbites’ atrocities and to again swear in their lost ruler’s name to endlessly wage war against their ancient enemies.

On this day, known as Conquest Day, all the people of Nex are expected to share in their leaders’ oaths, to celebrate the shared patriotism of their wondrous nation, and to remember the sacrifices of heroes past. This also makes it a day for many Nexian wizards to reveal deadly new spells, gigantic constructs, and audacious arcane masterworks—which many creators promise to be the doom of their foes. Even throughout the rest of the Inner Sea region, many crusaders, rebels, and zealots observe Conquest Day as a day to renew blood oaths, launch long-planned battles, and finally take revenge. It is a day for words of honor, a day for battle cries, and a day where glory most favors the bold.

A bit dreary with all the talk of battles and undead and disappearing archwizards and the like, but hey, at least it is better than Taxfest (and yes, that’s also on page 248).

Another Boon to give out the PFS players at our Convention this weekend!

Grand Lodge 5/5

Fantastic! I've got 2 cons going in this boon's window to give these things out.

Oh no, I need to print out like 50 of these for PAX East...

Only 50?

I have 36 players signed up for My con and I only have 18 tables... PAX East has to be larger then that.

*Yes I underestiamted the intertest in the Local Con.

Very cool write up.

I'm only running 7 tables when I get there. Figure I'll need at max 7 per table, so 7*7+1=50 ;)

Maybe I'll print more, though, in case other GMs didn't bring enough/don't know about the boon.

Sweet! Playing Echoes of the Everwar part 4 tomorrow. No clue if it has undead in it (Don't you dare tell me!) but it's likely considering the last 3 parts.

wait...

This is what you are Just GMing? Are there more tables overall at the Convention? Is is 7 the total number of tables for the whole convention?

PAX is largely a growth show to expose video gamers to tabletop, if PAX East is anything like PAX Prime was last year. Having 7 tables of PFS is actually better than we did at PAX in September, where we ran mostly demos.

What's the rule on giving out boons like this? Obviously, each PC can only get one of the boon, but if a player uses more than one PC during the time frame of the boon, can they get one boon for each PC? And if the boon is given to a player, do they have to assign it to the PC they're using in that particular session, or can they apply the boon to whatever PC they want?

I'll definitely be giving it out this weekend, when I'll be GMing the 2nd session of a two session day. I'll probably ask the first session GM (who has never GMed before) if he'll let me give these out before the first session of the day, so we'll have the boon for both sessions. In the first session, we'll be playing an adventure I had previous GMed (the first time I've done this), and I happen to know that this boon will come in handy against enemy clerics. I think I'll be rolling natural 20's on all my Knowledge (Metagame) checks for that first session... I'm kinda glad I'll be playing a half insane character who won't be trying too hard to win, anyway.

Spoiler:

Spoiler'd to keep this thread directed toward the awesome boon, and not PAX East.

From what I saw on the PFS Boston Warhorn, there should be more tables -- there's tons of time slots on the website for players (and some for GMs still if any of you are going!).

Looks like a fair offering 4 slots a day with 4-6 tables per slot of either seminars, demos, or PFS.

Should it be from dawn until just past noon? Or do I misunderstand the flow of time in Nex, or does it start the night before?

There are a LOT of atrocities to recount. They spend all night on it.

So can you only use this boon for playing through scenarios and not modules?

No, it can be used on a module or scenario.

Oh don't worry, I won't need boons for salvation from the clutches of your table. No no, strength of will alone will carry Nikolai to the promise land of victory over death.

Sure, if you want to burn it for that quest. Remember, at the end, it loses its magical properties and becomes a mundane item.

Kyle, just have Nikolai face a creature that requires a 25 GP material component to help combat it and you will win. Three 10+ level characters died at a certain game because the stupid cleric (read Nikolai) didn't have the necessary, and quite common, material component.

Oh, and he said the same crap about strength of will blah blah blah during the Eyes of Ten weekend even though Nikolai was hiding like a baby in several encounters.

But Joe knows I still like him ;-)

Really? EoT was a piece of cake. I mean Todd only managed to deal over 400 damage to me in the first combat (thanks Mona), but I came out of the whole series with only a few scratches. *fondly remembers back to being attacked 12 times in a certain surprise round*

LOL I uh...have learned from previous adventures and will be well prepared for the next encounters.

Listen, it wasn't retreating, it was a tactical advance to the rear. And it wasn't hiding, it was strategic camouflaging so that I could ambush when the time was right.

/And there is no such thing as defeat for Nikolai, just a success not yet realized.

Listen, I didn't have access to resurrection for some of those deaths, and I can't be held responsible for party members splitting up to do faction missions. I assure you Nikolai does more than his fair share of keeping everyone else alive.

Ok, still getting my bearings...

1) Can I assign this for First Steps II?

2) As the GM, can I fill it out for myself when I run FS II?

3) Can I give it to players before we start FS II? Since it might be useful.

4) Does it work against Ghouls?

3/5

Also...does a GM need to assign this to a player; or can players print it themselves and assign it to one of their characters?

The boon still needs a GM signature to be legal (to prove you've played in the given time frame).

This one is for April 2 through April 22. The dates are listed on the boon itself. It's the last sentence of the boon.

Mathew,

My answers would be (1) yes; (2) yes; (3) yes; (4) no, unless they're casting spells. The wearer is warded against "spells of the necromancy school, death effects, and saves against negative energy." Ghouls' paralysis isn't a negative energy effect.

Wouldn't 2/ be "No, it's a boon, GMs do not receive boons from chronicles for GMing"?

Shadow Lodge 4/5 5/5 RPG Superstar Season 9 Top 8

From the first holiday boon blog, emphasis mine:

Michael Brock wrote:

Yes, if you are GMing a PFS game during the timeframe, print off copies and give them out with the Chronicle sheet.

Also, a player should only receive one.

Also, the holidays will be an exception and GMs may also receive one Chronicle if they GM a game during the timeframe.

Grand Lodge 5/5

I think the rule is that a GM doesnt get the boon on a chronicle, unless that is the ONLY thing on the chronicle. No exp, gold, fame, items, etc.

What does a Quantium Golem look like?

It doesn't appear to be part of core assumption.

Dark Archive

The quantium golem seemed a little useless, imo. Don't know if I'll bother using it.

The Exchange 5/5 RPG Superstar 2010 Top 16

If I understand correctly, this holiday boon item takes up a body slot, yes?

Grand Lodge 4/5

A Quantium golem can be found on page 133 in the Inner Sea World Guide if you want to see what it looks like.

It does not take up any slot. You just pin it to your lapel or cloak

Silver Crusade 4/5

Gave out the boon yesterday. Much to my surprise, nobody actually used it, despite facing channeled energy from an enemy cleric.

Fromper wrote:

Saving it for "save or die" type death magic. I know it will be a while for that character, but could be a life saver.

The Exchange 5/5 RPG Superstar 2010 Top 16

Mike, going forward, I'll be happy to follow your direction here, but the Golem keepsake is described three times as a pendant and never as a pin. Don't pendants occupy the neck slot?

And I'm with Fromper: I handed these out at the games over the weekend, and most players had better amulets to wear.

Grand Lodge 4/5

I appreciate the fact that most people may have better amulets. At least this one was free (and a free item shouldn't be better than something purchased in almost every case) and everyone learned a little more about the world that they otherwise would not have known.
