Welcome to the Out of Character Discussion Thread for our Jade Regent campaign. Please take the time to introduce yourselves and get acquainted. If you have any last minute questions to ask me, go ahead and I'll try to get back to you as quickly as possible, Thanks.
You are currently cooling your heels in the local tavern known as The Rusty Dragon Inn.
Sharrd |
Sharrd sits deep in thought at one of the tables. A figment of light circles him, vaguely looking like a dragon. As it travels it occasionally seems to try to split into twin dragons, invariably one of duplicates loses its cohesion and fades away.
Very happy to be here, Thanks for the invite and choice. I notice alot of PC's were raised by Koya, including Sharrd. So Sharrd probably looks on Masamune and Ash as big brothers. Piper, I'm not sure about, is it pretty obvious that he's interested in Ameiko? Alara and William sound like they've spent alot of time out of town, so he may not know them that well.
Alara Dawnchaser |
Alara sits across from Sharrd, busily tucking into a plate of spiced salmon & stewed vegetables. She occasionally glances over at Sharrd, catching a glimpse of the twin dragons circling his head before returning to her meal with renewed energy.
Happy to be here too! This will be the first play-by-post game I've participated in, but not the first Pathfinder game; I'm currently GMing Curse of the Crimson Throne for a different group who takes pleasure in going off-book. I also take pleasure in going off-book in order to take a campaign and make it my own if I'm in the GM's chair.
Incidentally, Alara probably just walked in and took the first seat she saw. It wouldn't be much of a surprise if she missed Sharrd completely (having a Wisdom of 8 will do that to you). It's also entirely likely that she doesn't know anyone else in the party as she only just got into town.
Perception to notice Sharrd: 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (4) + 5 = 9
9 for Perception... yeah, she probably didn't see him before she sat down.
Marik Whiterose |
As someone asked I'll be using Google docs for non-essential maps and handouts along with Roll20 for the more tactical maps.
Masamune Mitsuhide |
Masamune is sitting at the bar with a mug of ale until he notices Shard.
Perception: 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (16) + 4 = 20
Walking over to his little brother Masamune sits next to him, and watches the dragon show for a while before talking.
"So, how have you been doing Sharrd?"
Masamune would probably try to be the best big brother he could to Sharrd, and try to help him out if he talked about Ameiko. Hey, Alara when you sat across from Sharrd do you mean the room, or the table?
Sharrd |
Alara sitting down totally breaks Sharrd's concentration, the dragons disappear into a burst of light. Sharrd starts to say something, but stops when he gets a good look at who has sat down across from him. "Hi, I don't think we've met. Are you one of Shalelu's sisters?"
Alara Dawnchaser |
I meant the table.
Alara glances up at Masamune as he approaches, then goes back to her half-finished meal. She starts tapping her foot on the floor while she eats.

"Mmm?" Alara looks up from her meal mid-chew. She swallows and addresses your question:
"Nope. Haven't really met her until a couple of days ago."
Her face pales a bit. "Oh. I REALLY should have asked this before, but was this seat taken?"
Sharrd |
Sharrd nods at his big brother. "Doin' pretty good. So when you going to teach me how to use that sword and become a mercenary. I'm ready to leave Sandpoint."
Sharrd has absolutely NO skill with martial weapons

Her face pales a bit. "Oh. I REALLY should have asked this before, but was this seat taken?"
Sharrd says. "No, not at all. Feel free. I'm Sharrd, and this big hunk here is Masamune."
Masamune Mitsuhide |
"I don't think the mercenary life would suit you. You'd end up getting a lot of scars, and you'd have to wake up early in the mornings."
Masamune shows a small smile to show he's kidding, and looks over at Alar.
"While I don't think of myself as a 'hunk' my name is Masamune. It's a pleasure to meet you Miss?"
Alara Dawnchaser |
"Alara!" She says with a sunny smile. Her foot stops tapping against the floor. Her meal is finished at this point.
She turns to Sharrd. "I noticed you doing something with light earlier... looked like two dragons flying around. How'd you do that?" She asks with an interested look on her face. Her hands wave around trying to mimic the dragons' circling.
Sharrd |
"Koya calls it Prestidigitation, and don't ask me to spell it. I can only do one figment right now and I'm trying to get two. My livelihood depends right now on how good my figments are. Watch this." He concentrates and says some words in Draconic. Three green balls of light appear and start cirling Alara. The balls stop circling while Sharrd throws another cantrip and a steady beat starts. The balls then start moving back and forth to the beat.
Dancing Lights Cantrips followed by Ghost Sound
Alara Dawnchaser |
Alara strains her arm, trying to catch the light without falling out of her chair.
Acrobatics to catch light without falling off chair: 1d20 + 8 ⇒ (2) + 8 = 10
...and fails miserably. End result: she's half-on, half-off the chair.
Sharrd |
Wow, why I am I thinking of a cat and a laser pointer:)
Sharrd tries to keep the Dancing Light contest fair, it never moves to point where she can't touch it, he seems to be really enjoying it as it is much more fun learning to concentrate this way.
Spellcraft: 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (19) + 5 = 24
Everytime Alara touches a light he has it wink out of existence.
Alara Dawnchaser |
Hey, 8 Wisdom & bad dice rolls. Whattya gonna do? :p
Alara gets back into her chair & tries again.
Acrobatics attempt #2: 1d20 + 8 ⇒ (12) + 8 = 20
...with much more success!
Acrobatics #3: 1d20 + 8 ⇒ (6) + 8 = 14
...and some more...
Acrobatics #4, by Chanel: 1d20 + 8 ⇒ (3) + 8 = 11
...but the last one stays out of her reach.
Acrobatics #5: 1d20 + 8 ⇒ (20) + 8 = 28
Alara's had enough. She springs off her chair, catching the light in her hand, and somersaulting backwards before executing a perfect landing next to the table.
She pumps her fist in the air in triumph. "Ta-daah!"
Incidentally, concentration checks are: d20 + Caster level + CHA Mod for sorcerers.
Alara Dawnchaser |
@Marik: What languages should we use for in-game languages? Like, what language would I have Alara speak if I wanted her to speak in Elven?
Sharrd |
Sharrd claps his hands. "Drinks for the table." he calls out to the bartender. "Where'd you learn to leap like that? Wasn't that amazing, Masamune?"
I figured that Spellcraft was a better measure at how well the spell is controlled.
Alara Dawnchaser |
Alara blushes at the compliment, and folds her arms behind her back. She begins swaying from side to side.
"Well, Mom always had the most athletic talent in the family. I guess I picked some of it up from her."
She returns to her seat to await the drinks.
Jacen "Ash" Teleris |
Sharrd and Masamune, we should probably discuss how well our characters know one another and what our relationship is...which I would like to do before Ash enters.
William Drak |
Please excuse me for being late! I got caught up with other recruitment threads and forgot that I got in this one...
William couldn't help but utter a laugh as he sees Alara trying to catch the lights. He walks over to the table.
"Nice job catching those lights Miss."
Sharrd |
"So was your father a wizard or a sorcerer? Koya tells me I'm a sorcerer, I certainly haven't had any training in magic. I work here" he gestures around. "but if you know of any jobs that will get me out of this town, I'm ready to get the hell out here."
Sharrd |

All three of us have been adopted by Koya, Sharrd's the youngest. We probably get along pretty well except that Sharrd has had a big fight with Koya and been kicked out. Ok not so much kicked out but the teenaged walked out and I'm never going to come back scene. You both probably know that he really likes Ameiko, but has been told in no uncertain terms that he is just a friend. There is also a vicious rumor going around that his magic is abyssal in nature. If you're outside and he thinks you're not paying attention he loves to yell 'AMBUSH' and try to tackle you.

"Dad? He was a wizard. He spent most of his time either with his nose buried in some book, chatting with noble friends of his, or gardening. He tried his best to get me to pursue magic, but I just don't have the patience for it." Alara says, almost all in one breath. Her blush fades as she speaks, her hands gesturing along with her words.

William couldn't help but utter a laugh as he sees Alara trying to catch the lights. He walks over to the table.
"Nice job catching those lights Miss."
Alara's blush comes right back in full force with William's compliment.
"Thanks. I'm Alara, but most people I've met call me Al. Well, I really prefer Alara because Al kinda sounds like a boy's name, but..."
Alara's face has flushed pink. "...if you really want to call me Al, I guess you can..."
Alara Dawnchaser |
Alara tentatively takes a beer. Her blush hasn't yet faded, but it's starting to.
"That doesn't sound too promising... but it does sound interesting!" Alara says, shifting in her seat.
Masamune Mitsuhide |
I think that we would know each other and would basically look out for each other. I would look at Ash as an uncle, and Sharrd as a little brother.
Masamine smiles at Sharrd.
"Looks like you're having a good time Sharrd."
Jacen "Ash" Teleris |
Walking into the Rusty Dragon, Jacen's vibrant eyes move from patron to patron, seeing two of his 'brothers' he gives them nods and walks over to them. He rarely, if ever, is in a hurry, unless Koya has beckoned for him. When compared to the other two, he is is a bit more of a stick in the mud, siding with their 'mother' on basically anything and really being helpful and giving to all, much like Koya, even though he has been raised with the others, to some degree.
As he walks, he nods to William and Alara, not knowing them, but seeing them with Sharrd and Masamune gives him the impression that he can speak to them.
"Good afternoon, brothers, what brings you about this afternoon...and who are your friends," he says, pulling his hand out of the sleeve of his robes, waving it to those unknown to him. This was the first time they glimpsed at his hand, the blackened hand looks as if it has been suck into a fire, yet when the skin turned black with ash, the ash never went away, which is essentially, is the truth.
Alara Dawnchaser |
Alara's eyes widen in surprise at the sight of the bookish man's blackened hand, but promptly snap to his face after a second. A welcoming smile spreads across her face and she waves to him.
"I'm Alara! And I don't think I caught your name, Mr...?"
Sharrd |
I wonder if Koya sent him to try andget me to come home. Sharrd wonders.
"Hey Ash," Sharrd says in a much more subdued voice. "This is Alara and William. Please sit down and have a beer with us."
Jacen "Ash" Teleris |
Nodding to the elf, then the human, he smiles as he hides his hand back into his robe sleeve. "I don't think a beer would be my thing, brother. Too flammable," his eyes returning to the female at the table.
"My brother only gives part of the story. He is often over excited about things. My name is Jacen Teleris, though many call me Ash," he pulls his hand out once more and rubs his fingers together, a bit of ash falling from it as he winces slightly from the pain. "For obvious reasons."
Alara Dawnchaser |
Alara slightly bites her lip at the sight of Jacen's discomfort.
"Okay, Ash."
She shifts in her seat again, then grabs her beer and downs the rest of it before someone can snatch it away.
Jacen "Ash" Teleris |
"In my youth...I made an error. Curiosity bit me harder than most, and left me with a burn and a curse. Forever after, I have had this and the pain that goes with it," his hand returns to it's hiding spot and he smiles. "It is my burden. It comes with certain...benefits, but is certainly my curse to bare."
Marik Whiterose |
Well, bless your little roleplaying hearts. Couldn't wait for me to get the gameplay thread up. In that case I better hurry.
Alara Dawnchaser |
Alara looks intrigued when Jacen mentions his scorched hands having benefits. She leans forward, looking Jacen in the eyes.
"What sort of benefits?"
Alara Dawnchaser |
Well, bless your little roleplaying hearts. Couldn't wait for me to get the gameplay thread up. In that case I better hurry.
What can I say, it's fun!
By the way, did you get my question on what languages to sub for in-game languages?
Jacen "Ash" Teleris |
"Whatever divine being decided to curse me with this, also blessed me with the ability to heal others...among other things. I have a little magic of sorts." He says as he shakes his head slightly, an almost sad sheen to his eyes.
You said introduce yourselves...I was assuming it was out of character, but since it went full IC, so did I.
Marik Whiterose |
That really depends: For Elven/Sylvan I generally use Gaelic. One group I game with uses Hebrew for Draconic. Dwarven could be German. Orcish=Klingon.
