Wow this seems very interesting.
Now cleric wanderer on a quest of self enlightenment or half orc barbarian escaping from cheliax
a lot of talk of half orcs above so that could be interesting

GM Birch |

@Papa - 1) Point Buy, yes.
2) Multi-class should be OK, though seems DM doesn't want folks in conflict over roles/tasks. I'd suggest focus on Cleric, maybe with mention of a brother/sister monastic order... Setting up the future multi-classing.
To ignore your questions would be rude but not to reference Black Thorn would be wrong too, so...Black Thorn is right on oth counts. As the game moves on, multi-classing might be useful to plug a gap but I'm not expecting many holes to being with if we have a balanced party. And a cleric would be a really useful party member from the outset.

I'm toying with the idea (just an idea at this point, no more) of getting the prospective applicants vote the for the party. Not sure how the mechanics would work out, but I'll put my thinking cap on? Does this sound a really good or really bad idea?
Don't know why, but honestly, to me it does not sound like a good idea. But it's you game, so feel free to do whatever you want ;-)
I am progressing (albeit slowly) with my priest of Pharasma - I am still searching for the right reason he would be there. He would definitely have some inappropriate behaviour (either drinking, womanising, gambling or maybe an addiction to pesh or whatever is locally available), so I was thinking that maybe he was unofficially expelled (not so much expelled - as placed as far as possible, so he does not create problems back in his home city). Officially, he was sent on a task to supervise taking of the flame to the crypt of Kassen, only thing is that they "missed" a year.
"What? It was not this year but the next?!? Oh, really sorry for the mistake, and especially sorry for that month and a half trip that you had to take. How could we be so careless? Now listen, speaking of the trip - well it is a very long trip, and the church is a bit tight on the money right now, you know with the crisis and that caravan raided last month, and all this talk about the new invasion coming from Hold of Belkzen...you know, I have an idea. Since you're already there, then why don't you stay? You know, try and spread the prophecy of the Lady of Graves with the locals, get to know them. Finally this procession, this taking of the flame is very, very important. You should prepare for that, and in order to prepare properly you'll need time. So sit there, mingle with locals (not too much!), give my regards to Father Rantal, and we'll be in touch..."
Something along those lines - too much?!

2) The multi-class would be a one level dip into monk at 2nd character level and then cleric all the way. That would put spell casting on par with an Oracle, ie. 1/2 level behind a full cleric.
This is not to step on anyone else, but it makes sense for the background that I am thinking of and it makes him not completely useless in combat.

1st level - cleric
2nd level - monk
3rd level and beyond - cleric

While I like the idea... of this idea, I don't feel it's a grand idea. but I've never tried it and could be way off. But that's my first - gut reaction.

Manzcar |

I would say that having the applicants vote would cause more problems.
But the suggestion Mug presented did sound interesting a pannel of people who could help with the selection process.
You could have a first round of cuts and then ask those who didn't make it if they would help select the finalists. I personally wouldn't mind helping in such a way if I am not selected.
I do see some not wanting to help because the didn't make the first round of cuts, but I don't have a problem not being selected.
One other question, would you allow an Aasimar in the game? Intersting thought about my wandering cleric idea.

To clarify:
1. Are potions or scrolls available for purchase at character creation? - yes2. If yes, what level max? - As these are magical items, it's a case by case basis
3. I am thinking of a scroll of Restoration (lessor) and a couple of Cure Light Wounds - no to the restoration scroll and yes to the CLW
Hope that helps...

GM Birch |

It can work - so I would never say no. The devil is in the detail, so it depends how the character looks once I see it in writing.
All I'm trying to encourage is that people stay away from the strange as this can limit scenarios later on. If the Aasimar is done right, there will be no problem.

Manzcar |

I do love clerics my Gyness character is having a wonderful time. 8-)

GM Birch |

@GM Birch - I think the confusion is that when you say Cure Light Wounds (CLW) you are referring to the potion of that spell, right?
Now you say that, I can see the confusion. I read the post as potions of CLW, which is fine for me. Now I re-read, I suspect the reques was for scrolls.
So - scrolls = none, potions of CLW = yes

Black Thom |

I will present Kyrah Moonshadow.
The concept/crunch is by no means optimized as it's waiting on a multi-class direction which will unfold level 2 or 3.
@Applicants voting... not sure it is appealing. You might get the best characters, or folks might vote for "friends". But, i don't feel you'd get the best party.
@Independent Judges... not sure that's appealing either.
If you want something like that, with yourself ad final arbiter, then maybe have folks provide their idea of a the best "5 character party" config, see how those look. You pick your fave and add a character or two.

Okay, got Savren's crunch taken care of (and I switched him to NG, as I felt it fit the kind of person he is better) and some of the fluff written up. I'm still working on the background but here's the short version:
Doctor Savren "Doc" Redforge:
- Moved to Kassen to act as a healer/surgeon ~10 years ago.
- Had almost no contact with humans beyond anatomical study before that.
- Acts the same with humans as he did with dwarves (read: blunt to the extreme, saying exactly what's on his mind).
- While his presence is tolerated, and his skill at his craft is welcomed, he's pretty much an outcast in Kassen. Braggar Ironhame is pretty much the only person he gets along with normally.
Just a rough sketch so far, but I'm still working on it. :)

Black Thom |

Trouble - Barbarian looked "blah", not enough focus...
Kyrah Moonshadow
LG Female Halfling Paladin (Divine Hunter/Warrior Holy Light).
And, I know it sounds bad... but let it settle in... eventually multi-class into vanilla Summoner for the CHA synergy and a trusted mount (bear/cat thing).
Same reason in town, save now maybe working with the Guard/Militia.

Damiani |

@Black Thorn -- Are you very eager on the Summoner idea? I was tempted by playing a pure summoner. Didn't want to step on toes in case.
Is there any sort of proposed 'PC Classes' list yet? I often like to fill in the missing role, and thus far, it's a rather long list from the recruitment tab and this discussion tab.
Or should I worry at all and just go ahead and make something? I've a few ideas thus far.
Oracle, Sorc, Summoner, Witch and Wizard (definitely a caster at this point).
Anyone have advice, first time on a pbp game, not sure of the etiquette.
Cheers.

Oladon |
I recommend this guide to start with, though I tend to disagree with a few of his stylistic guidelines. :)
Also, I'm planning to put together a list of the proposed roles/characters so far; should be up this afternoon sometime.

Khelreddin |

I'm thinking of a Ranger (Infiltrator), been interested in playing one for a while. He's the rebellious son of a wealthy merchant family in Tamran, the Nirmathan capital, who's run away to the Fangwood to escape a life sentence in his father's counting house.
Hi Oladon! Maybe this time we can both get into a game, after getting picked separately in a few recruitment cycles now. Looking forward to seeing your list of proposed characters, always a helpful thing.

Ah. Yes, the original request was for scrolls. Gotcha, potions ok, scrolls no.

Black Thom |

@Damiani - Go for it! There are plenty of other ways to get a mount if needs be. Never worry about my toes... Or anyone else's. Recruitment IMHO akin to a friendly rivalry. :)
@Seranov - Yeah, but I was going wiley-sneaky. To many feats, too much multi-classing to round out the concept.
Lancer is cool, but with Divine Hunter... probably mounted archer, or switch hitter as they say.

Proposed/Requested Roles (By Player):
Mihajlo Velickovic: priest (cleric?)
wolfheart: rogue (posted)

Thanos Maximo: Diviner
LurkingTyranny: monk or hospitaler paladin
Sigz: sorcerer (blaster type)
imimrtl: cleric, oracle, or pure archer
Black Thom: paladin planning to multiclass to summoner (posted)
Manzcar: cleric wanderer or half-orc barbarian
Papa-DRB: cleric with monk dip (1 level) (posted)
Damiani: pure summoner, oracle, sorcerer, witch, wizard

Damage-dealer: Mug, Zack Muad'Dweeb, Ridge, imimrtl?, Black Thom, Manzcar?, Khelreddin?, DaWay?
Skilled/Mixed: wolfheart, Oladon
A question mark indicates that someone has proposed filling a few different roles, and hasn't decided which. Let me know if you see something wrong.
Edit: Lists are in roughly in chronological order.

Pushing the door open, Grum stands in the doorway of the dimly lit bar, looking at all the hopeful faces. All of them looking to get onto the last caravan out of the war torn land of Bietbom. He himself had come in the hopes of offering his services to the caravan master, but one could never really tell the tastes or thoughts of the caravan masters. Some were fickle, some fairly straightforward, others would just tell you to your face that you "Weren't welcome."
Taking a deep he stepped the rest of the way into the room, most of the patrons keeping half an eye on him as he entered -- sizing him up. A few things on his person made his trade fairly obvious. The large bow strung over his shoulder, and the heavy flail pulling his belt low over his right hip. His simple travelers garb was well made, but not especially pleasing to the eye. The smell of pine and earth clung tightly to him, aromas perhaps foreign to some of the less-traveled types. Dried mud rides high on his boots, leaving a faint trail of dust on the well-used wooden floor planks.
Grum hikes his pack higher onto his shoulder and does his own appraisal of the rooms many occupants. Strong fighters and pious holy-men, high-nosed wizards and furtive looking thieves filled the room. Some looked green as the first blooms after a long winter, others looked decades more road-weary and world-wise than he. Well, nothing for it. he thinks, and moves towards an empty stool near the bar. Passing card games and bunches of other adventurers, some with their noses in their cups, and others chatting together like old friends. Others still sat tucked into shadowy corners, and some looked ready to throw up, so nervous were they for the upcoming decision of the caravan master. Grum grinned ruefully, he knew well how they felt, feeling plenty of nervous anticipation himself.
Taking his seat he slid a few coppers across the bar towards the busy barkeep, "An ale friend, and plenty more to follow." The barkeep just swept the coins off the counter and out of sight with nary a glance. He's probably seen countless would-be adventurers come through his doors, eyes full of hope and excitement. Turning in his chair and placing his back against the bar, Grum looks around to see if his brother, Grob, has arrived yet. Belatedly he remembers his bow, and removes it, leaning it carefully against the bar at his knees, then continues his search.

Ridge |

Not sure if we're supposed to 'strut our RP stuff' in this thread or not, but Grobradon can't leave his bro hanging. so if it's a no no, let me know and I'll stop, otherwise...
Grobradon had not arrived yet, that much was certain. Grum's brother could be a creature of habit. His usual spot at the back table where he could put his own back to a wall was empty.
But it didn't take long for the door to swing open again as Grobradon finally did enter the room. Judging by the armor he still wore along with a marking of the local militia, Grobradon had just gotten off some watch, drill, or exercise. Where his brother's bow was the first thing some noticed on him, Grobradon's own back was adorned with the great sword he'd paid for a year ago with hard earned coin.
Some of the locals nodded to him, one or two even smiled. While he hadn't made many friends, Grobradon's entrance into the town guard's services had won him a bit more acceptance and even a few friends.
That didn't mean anyone necessarily wanted the half orc courting their daughter mind, but as orc bloods went, Grob was 'arlight' by some.
Seeing his brother at the bar, Grob skipped his usual sitting location to join him, "Grum, good to see you in town proper. I thought you'd be out hunting again." He made a motion to the staff for an ale of his own and sat next to his half sibling.

joining in the hopefully tolerated rp fun. Also, is there a link somewhere that shows all the text formats, like how to color text, etc.(beyond what is listed in the bottom of the posting window).
As the door opened, Kieran noticed that the sun had started it slow descent into the west. Had he really been here at the card table all day. He recognized the half-orc who entered as the brother of his sometime sparring partner, Grob. He gave him a nod and went back to his card playing, as he had another winning hand he was eager to drop on the table.
As he laid down his pair of kings and japes an audible groan could be heard from the others at the table. He collected up the small pile of coins and stood to stretch his legs. A grumble grew from the table as the other patrons assumed he was going to walk away with the days wages. "Don't worry gents, you'll get a chance to win some of it back. But first I need to quench my thirst, taking your money is hard work afterall."
Kieran motioned for another round of ale for the table, and made a show of paying for it from the pile of freshly won coins. It was then that the door opened again and he noticed Grob walk in, heading straight for the bar to meet his brother. As he passed the table, Kieran gave him a wink, and smiling he said, "Grob, I may need to spar tomorrow, my limbs are getting stiff sitting here teaching these locals how professionals play at cards. I will look for you if I am up before midday."

Mug |

Strutting our stuff? Nah, this just seemed like a fun way to interact with other prospective players, possibly set up links between characters, that sort of stuff. But you do make a good point; GM if this is a 'no no' please put the kibosh on it. If it's not taboo, I hope everyone who wants to will jump in.
It also allows me to see how many people re-post and interact with other prospective players on the thread. In my experience, people who create outstanding applications don't always post frequently or well. How often you post here (and add value) will be a factor in choosing the final party. As will how often you post elsewhere (I will have a look to see what is your style and frequency). It is therefore useful to let me know if you are an existing player on the boards, which alias best reflects your playing style. I will open up the Discussion thread. Pherein this thread with your character ideas and on the Discussion thread with general observations, questions about the game, setting up possible links between characters etc.
Grum smiled to see the large, sword-bearing silhouette of his brother enter the doors. He gave him a teasing half-nod as his brother pulled up next to him at the bar. "I wish I could say it was good to be seen, I still get nervous walking around sometimes... wondering if I'm gonna get jumped by some idiot trying to rid the world of 'Orc-kind'. Never mind that it hasn't happened for years, plus you're here now." The last is said with the kind of matter-of-fact over-confidence of youth who've won the majority of the fights they've been in.
Sipping at his ale, he tilts his head towards Grob, his voice dropping conspiratorially, "Plus, I've heard talk of an adventure brewing, even way out on the paths I frequent. I was hoping you'd know something... or perhaps your friend at the card table. I know I've seen him around, what's his name again?"
EDIT: Maybe we should spoiler it to avoid cluttering up the thread too much?

Yeah, I believe there is no way to change color or anything with formatting. It's not a big deal, though, the options given are sufficient for the vast majority of stuff.
I'll put some thought into joining you folks in some RPing, but Savren's a very corner case in that he's pretty much on everyone's bad sides to start. It'd be tough for him to just walk into a tavern and start chatting with people, which is the whole reason he wants to go one the quest in the first place.

Mug |

@Seranov, well it's just a made up temp-world where we're just doing what we want... for the most part. Maybe you can start a fight with some NPCs, or steal something, or whatever showcases your character. We hopeful PCs are just some of the options at Savrens disposal. At least that's my take on what's happening in there :).

"You're gonna make some enemies out of em if you keep it up," Grob warns Kieran though he doesn't grumble about it. Frankly, he learned long ago that playing Kieren at cards was usually a losing proposition so when he played the man, he did it just for the practice or camaraderie and expected to lose a few coins. Some folks though, were sore losers, "And sure. We'll give those noodle arms a work out," A fang laden grin is granted to show he knows his description is unfair.
Grum smiled to see the large, sword-bearing silhouette of his brother enter the doors. He gave him a teasing half-nod as his brother pulled up next to him at the bar. "People got hate in their hearts, that's their problem, they shove it out in our faces... we teach them better," Grob shares some of the same cockiness, "But we'll take it outside, since I really don't need to get kicked off the watch for brawling indoors."

"Kieren," Grob answers, "I don't suggest playing cards with him unless you plan on losing. He's no cheat that I've seen, he just knows his way around a deck and dice. Yeah, he might know something about rumors. Me, I haven't heard much on any 'adventure'... some blowhards getting rich enough to own this town one day, but those are the same guys who said it last year."

as he approaches the bar he nods at the two half orcs seated there and takes a seat further down keeping several seats between them in order to let them have their privacy.
Why now? Why here? After all these years since Rachael... I will know.
Xavier suddenly snaps out of his own thoughts as the barkeep taps the glass on the bar in front of him.
My apologies my good sir. I require water and a hot meal. thank you.

Keeping to herself, she eyes all who enter and leave... alert for what, you're not certain.
She seems to frequent temples, churches and the barracks. She is friendly enough, just doesn't like to get mixed up in others' business.

Tweaking background.
Local that had traveled for sabbatical/training, and returned a few months back. Living at tavern and befriended Asina. General help and night watchperson. Cousin to Short Change, but different as night and day.
Assists Gregor Wisslo and Sir Darmott, as needed.

GM Birch |

Thoughts after three and a bit days...
1. I won't be opening up the decision on who to recruit to the players. It got an overwhelming thumbs down.
2. Friday the 25th seems a long way away, considering how much activity has happened so far. I may firm up a few roles before that date as I don't want to receive a further ten characters to consider ON the 25th.
3. I'm enjoying the tavern scene and I'd recommend anyone that's keen to join to grab themselves a drink.
4. Some generic feedback - the adventure calls for locals (or at least staying in Kassen for at least a while). The locals will entrust you with a solemn duty and won't offer that to strangers. The characters will be 1st level and with their core stats, are likely to be young (by their race's standard). Again, that fits in with the initial adventure hook.
