DM Alexander Kilcoyne's Sargavan Saga

Game Master Alexander Kilcoyne

"What is this place? Puzzles in Azlant, more magic than you see in a year in Absalom. Wheels literally within wheels. Bound demons and wax golems? The expense must have been enormous. But why? To what end?"

Tebati smirks at Ansha's astonishment, but the amusement is wiped off her face when N'bellocq volunteers. She frowns with concern but nods reluctantly. "You and I, cousin, and Jakob seem the least valuable in here. Kieran can find traps and unlock doors; Ansha understands arcane secrets; and Qhude can read and speak. As for Jakob and I, as long as one of us remains, there will be healing for those who need it. If you accept the risk, do so with Shimye-Magalla's blessing." Pressing her holy symbol to his head, she invokes healing for his wounds and resistance to any danger that might come to him.

N'bellocq and Tebati are still injured from the wax figures: N'bellocq's at 16/27 hp. Converting obscuring mist to clw 1d8 + 3 + 1 ⇒ (2) + 3 + 1 = 6 and following up with resistance. Meh, bad d8; puts him at 22/27.

Male Human (Mwangi - Bas'o tribe) Barbarian (Brutal Pugilist archetype) 4

Qhude shakes his head "Why should Ansha be allowed to cower as others risk their lives?" settling accusatory eyes upon Ansha "I do not trust you... and by letting N'Bellocq risk death in your place... you prove that you are not umkhaya."

Female Elf Wizard (Manipulator) 14/Archmage 6 Portrait

Recovering from the shock of Qhude's words, Ansha stares at the Bas'o, jaw set. "I was hardly cowering when we were ambushed on the road to Freehold; as I recall, you and I scaled those rocks together," she rejoins. "You may not trust me--after all, I am not human, let alone Mwangi--but I have fought beside you and do not deserve your scorn."

The elf shakes her head incredulously. "You may not be the 'most expendable' person here, but you do not get to determine who is either. We all have abilities to contribute. If N'bellocq chooses to go, I will not stop him; to do so would be to dishonor his choice, just as commanding someone to do what you are unable or unwilling to do would be."

It would almost have been more funny if Ansha just started crying instead.

Male Human (Mwangi - Bas'o tribe) Barbarian (Brutal Pugilist archetype) 4

Qhude grunts derisively "The only words you spoke on those rocks were to beg me for help... and afterwards you would have left the serving girl to the Bandu rather than rescue her." turning his head and spitting upon the ground.

"But as before and again here you have shown your mind... you would sooner let us all bleed and die than risk any of your own flesh... If Sangoma bids me to not make the word, then I will listen. If N'bellocq has the courage to put his umkhaya before himself... I will not stop him. But when he spoke, your face showed nothing but impumuzo..." symbolically turning his back upon Ansha and turning to N'bellocq "Come brother, let us get this over with..." before dictating the symbols that correspond to the words that form within his mind.

impumuzo - relief

Female Elf Wizard (Manipulator) 14/Archmage 6 Portrait

"I didn't beg. I directed you to where you were needed," Ansha replies, her voice turning chilly as she attempts to talk over Qhude. "And yes, I would have sooner not risked my own neck on what I did not believe would succeed. I don't intend to throw my life away. Just because you are being denied the opportunity to tempt fate does not give you the right to tell me to do it in your plac--"

Seeing the Bas'o turn his back on her, she utters a soft curse in Elven. "Amadalye," she says, and turns to exit the room before the experiments begin.

Female Human (Bonuwat) Cleric 4

"Feel free to go drink of the water, Ansha," the shamaness calls after her. "We would do well to have a spare linguist before we get too far from the font." After she departs, Tebati steps closer to the Bas'o. "You do not have to trust her, Qhude," she says in a lower tone, "but you need her. She is the only one of us who can hope to interpret the magic bound to this place. She is the one who spoke to the toad demon. She is not expendable. And I did not step forward to volunteer to risk my life. Does that make me not umkhaya?"

Male Human (Mwangi - Bas'o tribe) Barbarian (Brutal Pugilist archetype) 4

Qhude responds with quiet words, but does not turn his head to Tebati "Sangoma, you have given no-one reason to doubt your heart."

Your Humble Narrator

So N'bellocq will be your guinea pig? Will update tomorrow morning, off to bed now.

Male Human (Mwangi - Bas'o tribe) Barbarian (Brutal Pugilist archetype) 4

N'bellocq it is.

Female Human (Bonuwat) Cleric 4

Tebati sighs, then turns to N'bellocq. "Cousin." She squeezes his hand, then leans in to kiss his cheek before vacating the room. Anxiety for her cousin written clearly on her face, she leans her head against Kieran's shoulder and waits to see what will happen.

Your Humble Narrator

Slotting the pedestals into place, N'bellocq waited. For a moment, nothing happened.

Then the intricate figure on the pedestal before him began to shake. Slowly stirring, as though from a great slumber, the figure simultaneously enlarged; and unravelled. Any evidence that the rope once formed a humanoid figure was gone.

Hundreds of full-length ropes, like tendrils of some great otherworldly beast, formed a storm of hemp and silk above N'bellocq. The lashing movements of the rope seemed at first to be random, but it became clear to him that a system was being put into place. Rope lashed around the dozens upon dozens of cogs on the wall, forming an intricate circuitry. Within a matter of minutes, the storm had dissipated and every cog had at least one length of rope wrapped around it. What became of one end of the rope could not be certain; N'bellocq could spy no knot or tied end. The other end however, was easily visible. It hung down from the left-hand cog like a curtain handle- it seemed clear that pulling on the rope would somehow set this intricate web of rope to work in opening the door.

Male Human (Mwangi - Bas'o tribe) Barbarian (Brutal Pugilist archetype) 4

Qhude watched with some degree of awe, but also with confusion at the grandiosity of something long left idle. To N'bellocq he asks "Pull the rope brother... let us see what the wheels of metal do."

Male Half-Elf

"You know," Kieran says to Tebati as he watches N'bellocq's success with interest, "perhaps we should indeed partake of the water as well. I can only imagine it being a boon were we all to be able to decipher these ancient writings."

"Especially in case we become separated from each other," he adds, his hand almost instinctively tightening around the priestess' own. "And especially if such a separation is not of our own choosing."

Your Humble Narrator

N'bellocq pulled the handle, which seemed to easily pull the whole mechanism; every cog on the wall turned and the iron doors creaked open.

The doors opened and three miniature orrery's immediately flew through them; thin, sharp blades flashing from within. Each resembled a whirling mechanical model of a planetary system. Their sun, moons, and planets were crafted of tiny glowing jewels, whose color shifted somewhat as they took in the room before them and spoke. Electric arcs and sparks of magical essence dance between its whirling pieces.Without ceremony, the central orrery seemed to speak, though it was not clear where exactly the voice came from.

Welcome, Ariochites. Our colleagues informed us of your arrival. Please gather your companions- we would like to know that no evil lies in your hearts. Angazhanites are a threat to all of us. Your co-operation would be most welcome; and should any of you bear wounds, we would be happy to salve them.

Male Human (Mwangi - Bas'o tribe) Barbarian (Brutal Pugilist archetype) 4

Qhude steps slowly and warily into the room, making his presence known to the orrerys. He proferred an arm still bearing a wound from the waxmen and spoke "I have shed blood." before waiting to see what the things did in response.

Tebati breathes a sigh of relief as their guess proves correct and N'bellocq is unharmed. "The water's qualities have proven useful," she admits. "I wonder how long its effects last. Perhaps we should bottle some to carry with us...." She breaks off as N'bellocq opens the door and the orreries appear. "And yet these ... machineries speak in words we may all understand." She enters the room cautiously, admiring the beauty of the colorful devices even while distrusting their artificiality.

"It did not give of bird or bush/ Like nothing else in Tennessee."

Tebati wrote:

Ansha:

These Outsider's are the least of the Archons- Lawful Good heralds and assistants for the forces of Heaven.

All such servants of Heaven can communicate in almost any language; for we speak directly to your souls the central orrery stated. For we ourselves, are formed from the souls of kind, just folk; petitioners.

The voice of these strange creatures seemed to almost retain a musical tinkling to it, as though it was naturally melodic and harmonious. The Orrery seemed to scan the group in a manner much akin to how the Arbiter before it did.

We are satisfied that there is no evil amongst you. Yet our colleagues did note the scent of chaos on the one they called the "Shamaness". They are over-zealous and lack benevolence in their duties, yet our contract stipulates we investigate such a thing, much as they would have made inquiries of any evil aura we reported. May we ask, Shamaness, as to your spiritual leanings?

While the central orrery spoke, a second hovered over Qhude's arm; bathing it in a soft, golden light while electrical sparks and flashes of magical essence flared from the device. Qhude's wounds rapidly healed from the powerful conjuration magic.

Tebati draws herself up to her full height. "I am Tebati of Nantambu," she replies with dignity. "I am Bonuwat, and I serve the goddess of my people, Shimye-Magalla, Lady of Storm and Sea. Her gales blow both good and ill, and her waters sustain life and swallow it up, as she pleases."

Female Elf Wizard (Manipulator) 14/Archmage 6 Portrait

"So, now that that's settled...Are we cleared to move on?" Ansha asks, indicating the way the orreries had entered with a wave of her hand.

Male Human (Mwangi - Bas'o tribe) Barbarian (Brutal Pugilist archetype) 4

Qhude looks upon his arm as the being worked, before flexing it as the wound healed entire. Though his awe is tempered by a wariness over it's skepticism of the Sangoma.

Your Humble Narrator

The strange Outsiders exchanged glances and replied befoee vanishing from sight-

You have heart Shamaness. You are all "cleared". Perhaps we shall meet you someday in our new forms. The Hounds of our race are magnificent creatures. Farewell...

Noting that the room was once again looked out on by silent, unmoving skeletons in a firing gallery, the group moved through the room and up to the doorway of the next, peering in but not yet entering.

Much like its twin on the west side, this room seemed to host completely still specimens; three to be precise. Each had a plaque in front of its place and a circle around it.

Haven't assumed Detect Magic from Ansha as yet.

The first appeared as a small cherub; a child-like being a little smaller than a halfling. Its wing's were grotesque and it was covered in sores, reeking of decay and rot, with wounds that seemed to bleed and fester before your eyes.

The second was a goat-headed humanoid, covered in a mangy grey hide that only partly covered its gaunt but muscled frame. It had a dangerous-looking iron and its still body held a halberd in a threatening posture.

The third was a tiny, winged thing; much smaller than the cherub. Its thin and wiry body was home to two vicious looking claws, a little larger than a cats; and seemingly dripping with poison.

Male Human (Mwangi - Bas'o tribe) Barbarian (Brutal Pugilist archetype) 4

Emboldened by the experience on the other side, Qhude moves forward with his guisarme readied until he can ken what is written upon each of the plaques...

The archons having returned to their home plane, Ansha proceeds through the open doors with the group. Upon seeing the latest menagerie specimens, her face goes blank. "Demons," she murmurs. Eyeing the motionless creatures warily, she intones another cantrip to detect magic and reviews the room (and its occupants) again.

Your Humble Narrator

Ansha:

You do not know anything of the cherub-like Demon. The central Demon is known as a Schir, also known as a Spite Demon. These are muscular warriors for the Abyss that have a devastating charge with their horn; and the spittle they coat their Halberds with can cause a struck enemy to contract a vicious disease called Grey Pox. They can see through invisibility as well as being able to speak with Tongues, invoke the abyss' protection from good-aligned foes and summon others of their kind.

They are the most violent tempered of all Demons despite their affinity for language; and are also telepathic...

The third Demon is well-known to demonologist's- the lowly Quasit. Usually, these demons serve as familiars; and then attempt to drag their masters soul to the Abyss as bargaining chips when he or she is slain. You recall they are immune or resistant to most of the elements and their skin is hardened so that only Good-aligned weaponry or Cold Iron pierces it most effectively.

Before Ansha could gather sufficient concentration on her spell, the curious Qhude passed through the doorway, intending to read the plaques upon the motionless creatures.

As he passed through, the three Demons seemed to stir instantaneously from their slumber. The central, Goat-like Demon raised its Halberd and roared a challenge of rage at Qhude and the fight began!

Choosing a particularly inopportune moment to curse in Abyssal, Ansha calls out a warning to Qhude and the others: "Beware the goat's diseased spit! And watch the poisoned claws of the tiny winged one!"

Male Half-Elf

"Very well then," Kieran mutters as he nods, acknowledging Ansha's words of caution. Sword in hand and taking advantage of his quick reflexes in an attempt to attack his foe before it has a chance to effectively defend itself, the half-elf quickly moves to support Qhude, stepping right beside the Bas'o and striking at the tiny, winged creature with a horizontal slash of his curved blade.

Round 1

Sneak attack: 1d6 ⇒ 5

Actually, Kieran has had his sword in his hand ever since the fight with the wax men, so his initiative bonus should be +7, bringing his initiative up to 26, the same as N'bellocq.

Noted and i'll make a note in my macro for future, thanks.

N'bellocq planted his feet and launched two arrows at the fearsome, goat-headed Demon Qhude that had engaged Qhude in melee. The first arrow he launched from his trusty bow simple glanced off the Demon's tough hide- which seemed to have similar consistency to a suit of platemail! The second shot was far more precise though, and pierced the beast's skin. The fierce creature growled fiercely, a low, guttural sound that made the hair of its listeners stand on edge, as though being stalked by a powerful predator...

Damage: 1d8 + 2 + 1 + 2 ⇒ (5) + 2 + 1 + 2 = 10

Your Humble Narrator

Even as N'bellocq took his shots upon the horned demon, Kieran slashed his blade across the tiny Demon's abdomen, catching it off guard. The blade did not penetrate nearly as far as it should have, but nevertheless, the Aldori blade drew blood; vile, black ichor.

Meanwhile, the Cherub-like demon flashed a wicked grin and with a wave of its hand, vanished from sight!

Defensive Casting (Success): 1d20 + 6 + 4 ⇒ (12) + 6 + 4 = 22

The tiny winged Demon cast its own magic from the ground, not taking to the air and warily avoiding giving the duelist an opening transforming into a snarling Wolf right before Kieran's eyes; becoming a far deadlier physical combatant.

Mid Round Map Update

The goat-headed Demon was assailed by both magic and metal as the thing was wounded twice in succession. Definitely blooded, the brute snarled in fury, its hateful eyes focused upon Qhude. Its halberd crashed against Qhude's guisarme, the metal heads of the weapons making loud, jarring sounds as they were smashed against one another in a routine of attack and defence that seemed to drown out other sounds in the room.

N'bellocq held his breath, looking to fire through the melee at the goat-headed foe. The difficulty of firing into a melee was something the man was well accustomed to, but the cover provided to the demon was giving his eye trouble. Finally finding a shot he was happy with as Qhude and Kieran hacked and slashed, N'bellocq forcefully exhaled and let fly his first arrow fly; a shot that would have taken the demon in the throat had the haft of Qhude's guisarme not brushed it off-course as the two weapons collided. The arrow struck the demon's chest instead, glancing off as though the demon was wearing armour. The second arrow followed the first, not harming it at all...

N'bellocq had little time to even register the shot though; as the child-like demon materialised, floating behind him and attempting to savagely bite him upon the shoulder. As an aside on the initiative count, Kieran should be at 26, not 24.

Your Humble Narrator

Yup, will try to remember that for Round 3. Copy paste is my bane. Thanks Mark.

Jakob's spear only scratched the demon, the thing clearly possessing powerful and magical resistances to the group's weapons. The blow did serve to irritate the creature though and although it fought the three men simultaneously, it used its only opening to viciously cut him across the neck; only his fine mithril armour prevented the blow from taking his head!

5-Foot Step to B30.

Crit Confirm VS Jakob (Unconfirmed): 1d20 + 10 ⇒ (3) + 10 = 13

Ansha worked a basic enchantment upon the demon-wolf, which it succumbed to with little ceremony; barely able to focus upon anything other than its own defence.

That could have been a much easier exit for Jakob. Shame my demon doesn't have any re-rolls :P. Qhude is up.

Flurry Deadly Aim vs Cherub: 1d20 + 8 + 1 + 1 - 1 - 1 ⇒ (4) + 8 + 1 + 1 - 1 - 1 = 12
Flurry Deadly Aim vs Cherub: 1d20 + 8 + 1 + 1 - 1 - 1 ⇒ (18) + 8 + 1 + 1 - 1 - 1 = 26 for 1d8 + 2 + 1 + 2 ⇒ (2) + 2 + 1 + 2 = 7

His first shot well wide, but the second better aimed and sinking into the demon.

Your Humble Narrator

Kieran's sword blow sliced the wolf open and it collapsed from the two slashes he had dealt it.

N'bellocq scored another minor blow on the cherub-like Demon, but once more the arrow seemed to barely bother the foul abomination. Floating and deftly flying around the archer to make his shots a hard prospect, the Demon suddenly lunged forward and bit him viciously on the shoulder. While the piercing teeth certainly hurt as the Demon tore a chunk of flesh free, the wound itself felt like it was burning, the stinging sensation it left proving to be more agonising than the wound itself...

Attack on N'bellocq (Hit): 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (14) + 5 = 19
Damage (Second Dice Acid): 1d6 + 1d6 ⇒ (2) + (4) = 6

DM Only:

N Fort: 1d20 + 6 ⇒ (1) + 6 = 7
