When does posting to the PF1 forum become an act of nostalgia...

Pathfinder First Edition General Discussion

yeah... *sigh*

I'm currently in 3 regular PF1 games. It’s still a pretty popular and relevant game to play and ask about. I even come across new players fairly often. But you could have been nostalgic for Pathfinder 10 years ago if you personally couldn’t find a group for it. That’s just up to the individual.

I've just shifted into more of a support role for those would like assistance. I'm involved in two active PF1 games and my characters are locked in for them (as are the two backup characters I have in case something happens). I haven't much need to ask for advice or opinion at the moment.

I'm playing a huge swath of other games too right now. Blackbirds, Soulbound, Warhammer Fantasy, Fantasy Age (trying it out), and PF2 (Kingmaker) are just the regular games. All fun but PF1 is where I am most at home.

Both of my groups still play PF1 exclusively.

PF1 if the 3.5 update we were all hoping for. No reason to change.

I'm a little curious about PF2 and even D&D5, but my groups are pretty staunchly PF1 and I don't think we will be switching anytime soon.

Honestly, I think PF1 kind of spoils us for options. I could play the same class multiple times and get different experiences from it. But being that campaigns run for at least a year and up to 3 years, I doubt I will ever run out of things to do in PF1.

Grand Lodge

We got a 5E friend into PF1, running him through APs and doing a single PFS character with all of our established characters making up the OP rotating party feel.

Dark Archive

I haven't even gotten around to building two characters yet with the same class, so definitely on so many options, and pretty easy to port on years of older material at this point

My Friday group (I DM for 5 players) has probably another year or two in our Legendary Planet campaign and will likely stay PF1 when it's done.

My Saturday group (I play in a group that has grown to seven players) is just under half finished Tyrant's Grasp. We've got a couple PF1 campaigns planned when that wraps.

We're starting up a second Friday group (currently 3 players) that's an experiment bringing in (yet another) new player.

All told, in the last year or so the table I host has gained four new players.

That said, mostly I visit here a few times a week just kind of waiting. There's a lot of PF1 money just lurking in wallets and it's not impossible someone will decide they want it after all. Unlikely, unprecedented, but not impossible. So yeah, nostalgia.

Is it me, or does this thread "smell" like Edition Warfare?

If you are smelling something while browsing, I recommend inspecting and cleaning your device.

:)

Grand Lodge

I swear, I'll be out and about and catch a whiff of something, then the first thing I think is 'is that me?' before realizing someone else walked by me.

I think this is just a nostalgia thread, which can always carry some element of the edition wars we all remember. Best just not to feed into it.

Hopefully we can agree that different editions are better for different people. I may prefer PF1, but that’s just an opinion. I fully understand other people having differing opinions.

Lord Fyre - it's inadvisable to put your finger on the trigger of a bear trap or to test out an iron maiden from the inside... or project that desire onto a simple thread as you only announce your fears. "Febreeze of the Spotless Mind..." by Saudade

Perhaps it is just clearer to say I feel the passing of time.

Grand Lodge

You and me both.

I still check/post on the forums occasionally, as I'm running two different PF1 APs for my usual groups plus a bit more PF1 for a more casual group.

Honestly, I just came back to have a place to store my stuff really. I was surprised there were still some stragglers here. I have zero interest in PF2 or any other D&D derivative. Though I am a bit excited about the Ars Magica Definitive edition being kickstarted tomorrow. :D

Am happy there are people still about, but I think most somehow went to Reddit, and I'm too old to bother with new fangdangled things. :P

It becomes an act of nostalgia when you actually start playing a later edition and realize/think to yourself, "Wait?! They did what?! Why?! It worked just fine/perfectly and made absolute sense before!"

I like the quieter community. I'm of the age where seeing the tidal wave of fad attention move on leaves me relieved. The bickering has almost entirely disappeared.

conversly, we could just be left with the invested old cranks and wandering newbies... B^D

Yeah... that's true. Though, I'm neither old nor cranky. Creaky, maybe. And I like the newbies for the most part. I like watching their eyes (figuratively, of course) as they drink in the lore and details of a setting I've come to greatly enjoy.

Grand Lodge

I think I’m less cranky after getting older.

My Pathfinder 1e gaming group is still going strong. This site just isn't as active as it used to be.

I've never been much of an online person. I found these threads as a resource when dipping my toes into GMing in earnest for the first time. I hope this community continues to thrive, if somewhat reduced in numbers. Considering that every time I pop back on, the threads I'd engaged with have fallen way down the line, I take some hope in this.

While there are systems I enjoy more for different things (MARVEL!!!!!), and editions I've even able to have fun in (*blush* *whisper* 4e), PF1e still hits a sweet spot, and the rest of my crew are happy to stay here. If anything, I am nostalgic and more than a bit jealous of DeathlessOne and others for when I was still active in multiple games. Yet coming here, engaging in discussion and the marketplace of ideas over this thing we all enjoy helps to fill some of that need. I'm happy to have you all.

I'm always so behind when it comes to technology, pop-cupture, and other trends, that should this site ever fade, I will be caught completely unawares, and feel quite sad. Hopefully, our little corner of the net, and Paizo's servers, is vibrant enough, (and resource cost low enough) to just keep chugging along. Regardless, I'm happy to have had these experiences.

Secretly being an "old man from the 50's" (in spirit), I will encourage or remind others here though, to not forget/forsake the real world. I know you have to be careful online, but if you've made good friends here, make the effort to keep in touch, whether by other correspondence or IRL. But, what do I know? I'm also just a baby (on another thread :p)

Great post, Sysryke!

For me, it's not nostalgia since after writing for others, I started launching books under my own brand. Check out New Products on DriveThru! thread in the Conversions subforum.

Now that you say that, there might be even less people on this site when you take multiple accounts into....account.

Actually, isn't this all "sock puppets" of one person?

We're all just secret accounts of an Angry Bag, right?

The best part is when I start trolling myself, or quoting me quoting me quoting me. ;)

Plenty of people are still playing. It's no longer actively developed, but there's such a huge wealth of content for what is essentially a complete game that it still works great. And yes, I'm still playing. I'll be GM'ing a session in 45 minutes.

Reincarnation is such an adorable trick for those that have not become Deathless.

1 person marked this as a favorite.

Probably a matter of taste, but reincarnating infinitely seems way more interesting than simply never dying. Though either could drive you crazy if you aren’t suited to it. A bit of a spoiler, but there is an old manga about that concept called Immortal Rain where you have both types of immortality

Mmmmmm... such delicious role-play opportunities to explore in each of the two avenues of immortality. Entire campaigns can be built around the concept of both being present simultaneously, and the repercussions each would have on the lives of those around them.

What if it was like flying from Hitchhiker's Guide? Immortality isn't some huge achievement, it's just throwing yourself at the end of life, getting suitably distracted, and then realizing that somehow you missed :p

Nostalgia?! I just got here! Really though, I won't be done with this game for a long time. I'm in a round-robin scenario where every few months we switch campaigns and GMs and it's awesome. Also, yeah I'm glad I came here after most of the trolls and such left. Now it's just a chill place where I can talk about my favorite thing ever, PF1e. And occasionally add mediocre additions to fun lists.
