Out of the Abyss

Game Master ULTRAGEEK

1 to 50 of 63 << first < prev | 1 | 2 | next > last >>

Hello everyone!

I have recently acquired a copy of the Out of the Abyss, and I would like to run it as a PBP campaign.

If you would like to play, here are the guidelines:

Character Creation:

Use the standard ability score when generating your character (15, 14, 13, 12, 10, 8)
Your character must be first level
If you would like to use homebrew or unearthed arcana, please send me the material:
I have already cleared the Mystic, and That Old Black Magic for use
No evil (except Lawful Evil) Alignments

Other Stuff:

Please post at least once per day
No house rules (so far)

Everything from the Sword Coast Adventurers Guide, and the Dungeon Masters Guide, is available as well

Grand Lodge

Can you give a bit of background on the campaign for those of us who don't know anything about "Out of the Abyss"?

Oops! Sorry!
Here is the intro:
Captured by the drow! You would not wish this fate upon everyone, yet here you are-locked in a dark cave, the cold, heavy weight of metal tight around your throat and wrists. You are not alone. Other prisoners are trapped in here with you, in a underground outpost far from the light of the sun.

Hope this helps!

I'm totally up for this.

I would be interested. I have not played 5e, but I have the core books and have some characters made up. What campaign world? And where shoudl characters be posted.

I am up for another 5e game.

Yay! People are interested!

The world is Farun, and create an alias for your characters, and post a bit of info about them on this thread!

*Faerûn. :)

I'd like to play a 5e campaign

Kneeling in a circle of soldiers, his shield, bearing the insignia of a armored fist and a stylized eye, held in both of his hands, he speaks in a clear baritone voice. ""Lord Helm , give keep our eyes open and strengthen our hearts so we may do our duty to protect our wards this day." Silver light radiated out from his shield, illuminating the faces of his brothers-in-arms. Standing, the blonde man slid the plumed helmet on, shouldered his shield, and took the standard pole in his hand. He turned to his CO and nodded, "on your word, Sir!"

[Later] The blond man woke. there was something sticky on his face, and hands. Pain shot through his body as he tried to move. A crow called, sounding as if it were on the other end of a long tunnel. His eyes opened as his hand reached up to wipe the wetness away from his eyes, coming away red. The crow croaked again and a blurred image of the black bird fled across his vision. He struggled to sit up, pushing the body off his own. The remains of his unit, his brothers, lay about him, their silvered armor splattered with gore. In his hand, the standard pole ended in a jagged splinter after a a few hand lengths.

[Later] The fire from the dying pyre flickered across the man's face as he knelt, scooping the ashes of his fallen brothers into a clay cookpot. Standing, he slid the pot into his pack, and turned, wandering off into the dawn of a new day, the broken standard shaft in one hand, and the torn and blood-splattered insignia from the banner trailing in the other.

1 person marked this as a favorite.

Interesting...let's see what the Randomizer thinks:

trinket, from elemental evil: 1d100 ⇒ 21 A small, finely polished geode whose crystals slowly fade between every color of the spectrum.
Background: 1d13 ⇒ 6 Guild Artisan -> Guild Merchant
Gender, male:odd, female:even: 1d100 ⇒ 11 Male
Class: 1d12 ⇒ 2 Bard
Race: 1d9 ⇒ 8 half-orc

That'll work...

I am VERY interested, just putting the finishing touches on a Half-Elven (Lore) Bard. I have been looking for a 5th ed Play by Post, and would love to play Out of the Abyss.

DM, when are PC application deadlines?

I'm still interested in my H-Elf Paladin Sage but won't have a full backstory and build until, say, Monday.

Also, if you could give any more specifics on creation or background guidelines it would be great.

Thanks.

Application deadline is this Wednesday.

Your character background should have a small part that has your character come into contact with the drow.

If you need more specific things, do not hesitate to ask!

Ok cool.
I haven't had time to work on my bard, but should have him done by then.

I should have a PC submitted by the end of the day.

Thanks everyone!

Liberty's Edge

Working on a submission. Hope to have crunch up soon

This is Filios, and I present Dieredon D'atarisian, Male Moon Elf Fighter (Eldritch Knight of Myth Drannor) 1 for consideration. Thanks!

Hey Ultrageek, Would it be appropriate to have my military unit decimated by drow, and only I survived? My only real experience with the Forgotten Realms world was the old Gold Box games.

Sure, that's a great idea!

Filios: Awesome job on the character! Thanks for submitting!

I am pretty excited about the prospect of playing this one!

I was as well, but real life has/will prevent me from completing my application.

have fun!

That sucks. Well, have fun with whatever you are doing! :)

@ULTRAGEEK: Just wondering, are you still using tomorrow as the submission deadline?

Grand Lodge

I will have time Wednesday evening to finalize (and post) the ideas I have for this PC. Hopefully that will be okay.

Dieredon D'atarisian wrote:

If you wish, I can extend the deadline to 12:00 Am Friday

W E Ray wrote:

Its ok!

No, I am completely submitted, I was just wondering when selection time was coming. I do not require an extension.

Sure!

Ok, I will wait till W E Ray posts, and will make my choices as soon as possible.
So far the submissions are:
Dierdon D'atarsion, Level 1 moon elf fighter
Carson Jarroc, Level 1 Human Cleric(Helm)

Exited to see the rest!

Excited as well. My character, Carson, is ready to rock, and posted above. Is there anything more I need to do at this time?

Sorry, been flat out the past few days. I have nearly got Selwynn, Half-Elf Bard started up and finished. Should be able to get him finished by this evening.

Grand Lodge

Can I re-Fluff the Half-Elf?

My character concept does not fit, Race-wise, with one of the Races in the PHB. Flavor-wise, Half-Elf is the best choice.

Of course, my Race build would strictly be Half-Elf; it's just not a half-elf.

Liberty's Edge

WhAAhA! Looks like I got this one in just under the wire!

If I can play *wink* here's a character submission from Atlas2112. =)

I see no reason there can't be two clerics. If you had to have a party of only one class, cleric is the way to go!

That is, if the deadline is still tonight. ^_^ If the deadline is this weekend it looks like we need an arcane. Possibly a Warlock. =)

Grand Lodge

The character background and build are all done on paper. Here's the family background and my vision for his role in the party:
.
.
.
.

The Past:
Two generations ago the Succubus Warlock of Asmodeus, Lilith, came to Faerun to impregnate herself with various mortals, intent on spreading her Infernal heritage throughout the Prime Material world. One of these fathers, a clever Satyr in the Moonwood (called the Glimmerwood by outsiders), successfully tricked Lilith after their son's birth and stole the child away, leaving an irate but impotent Succubus Warlock of Asmodeus far behind.

Meanwhile, in a more distant, more remote part of the Moonwood than the eyes of humankind see, The Princess of Swan Maidens was wed to the Prince of Huldras in the hope that their offspring would become a great monarch of Fey in the Moonwood. The daughter they bore showed all the potential of true nobility until the drow, helped by the Night Hag, Sanguine Agatha, kidnapped the girl Fey.

By the Luck of the Fey, or the Fate of the future, Sanguine Agatha and her drow took the girl to a mountain cave in the Spine of the World where a certain Satyr and his young son, the son of a Succubus Warlock of Asmodeus, had been living in hiding.

The ensuing battle saw the Satyr being helped by Dwarven allies with whom a friendship had been made, the end of which saw the drow defeated, Sanguine Agatha fled, and the Satyr killed.

The young boy Cambion, son of a Succubus and Satyr, and the young girl Fey, daughter of a Swan Maiden and a Huldra, met and were raised together by dwarves in The Spine of the World, just north of the Moonwood.

The Present:
Lanezra was born 26 years ago, a crossbreed of Fey with an Infernal taint. Growing up among the dwarves who raised his orphaned parents he received the education of a sage but rebelled in mischief against the lawful, pragmatic and, to him at least, banal lifestyle that must infuse the very stone of The Spine of the World. He was every bit the Rogue of the dwarf clan. All he wanted was to escape to The Moonwood.

And escape he did.

Alone in the Moonwood, temporary allies with Pixies and Sprites, Quicklings and Nymphs, Lanezra revels in his Roguishness, despite his comparative sluggish reflexes and clumsy dexterity.

Indeed, compared to the other Fey he is slow and deliberate -- thoughtful and honest.
Too much like a dwarf.

But to the drow that have just ambushed Lanezra and his playful friends, he is either a slave for torture or a slave for labor.

Unsure how many of his Sprite, Pixie, Grig and Nymph friends have survived the attack, all Lanezra knows is that if he is going to escape to find freedom and, perhaps vengeance, he will have to use both his Roguish mischievousness, and his Lawful sagacity.

The Future:
Lanezra is an atypical Rogue, having THREE Ability Scores higher than Dexterity. He is quickly moving from Chaotic Good to Neutral Good and long before he reaches second level (maybe even by three or four posts in Gameplay or Discussion), he will become Lawful Good.

Lanezra is a Sage and Diplomat.

And the events which unfold in the campaign will drive him to become a Paladin. I will learn to which LG deity he swears his sacred oath during play and with the help of the DM and other PCs. But at second level Lanezra will multi-class into Paladin. (He will remain a Sage and Diplomat.)

@W E Ray: Are you seriously contemplating a PC that will change alignment three degrees and class from Rogue to Paladin?

Grand Lodge

Sounds fun, doesn't it?
.
.
.
.

As I understand it we're starting out by being captured by drow and taken to the Underdark, assumptively as slaves or dinner. Further, given the title of the campaign -- and the fact that it's a published hardback -- is "Out of the Abyss," it's also assumptive that Demon Lords and their hordes are going to be a major factor in the campaign.

I think that's a great opportunity to start a PC with one outlook on life and then get totally shwacked into another way of life. A Rogue with no life experience whatsoever (first level, after all) gets taken to the Underdark and Drow (and probably Demons) start F'ing with him, taking him away from everything he considers his life and irrevocably changing his future -- I think it makes sense he would change into a Paladin. ....And a Rogue with only an average DEX?! And one not from the city streets!?

At least, I'm in a mood where it sounds better to have a PC that changes to a Paladin after his traumatic start than one who was a Paladin from the beginning and is almost glad he gets to spend his career killing drow and demons and aberrations.
(And I like to play Paladins.)

. . . .

Consequently, Monday, one of my PCs was chosen for a new Ravenloft PbP where we start on the road from Neverwinter to Waterdeep and the Mists take us to Strahd. That PC was built as a Paladin from the first and now, a few days after submitting the PC application, I'm kinda wishing she didn't start as a Paladin.
.... Well, no -- I really like her as she is. And she is going to change once she enters Ravenloft: She's described as being idealistic and has true faith in Beauty & Romance. She'll develop, I feel, into a pretty cynical Paladin as the horror of Barovia taints her.

Grand Lodge

Okay, basic PC Sheet framework and Crunch.
(I know it's not altogether ready as a submission but it has everything down that I'll need to put into an application)....

(Using Abyssal bloodline from UA: That Old Black Magic)

Spoiler:

Pet was raised in a large city near a green ocean. His given name was Kystylx S’llucuin, and he was third son of a Count. Not a grand lord like the Dukes who lived near the Iron Citadel, but still noble, still privileged. He had dreams of joining one of the magical Academies, or learning the arts of cuirgery in the House of Weaving. None of those would come to pass.

His world was shattered when his father, deep in debt to another noble family, sold the seven oldest children to settle the account. After all, Kystylx had thirty-six siblings, his father could afford to spare a few. And it wasn’t like his father planned on allowing any of them to live long enough to succeed him anyway.

Kystylx found himself working to exhaustion in the Soul Mines of Greyhaven. Several of the overseers took special delight in tormenting him, calling him “Pet” and forcing him to eat out of a dish on the ground. Kystylx fought back at first, did not listen to their instructions, and refused to eat. But that only resulted in beatings and starvation. The pampered noble broke quickly.

Several years passed this way. Pet suffered many injuries, the worst of which caused the loss of three fingers and most of the feeling in his right hand.

One day, something strange occurred. The miners were brought out of the deep shafts and told to sit in a large open area. Several men wearing blood red robes stood stoically beside the overseers. After the miners were seated, one of the robed men stepped forward to speak, “Faithful workers of Greyhaven, war has come upon us. Who here will volunteer to do their duty and serve our Lord?”

None of the miners stirred – all knew what the invitation meant. Working the mines was hellish, but these priests were talking about a war in Hell itself.

Suddenly, with energy he didn’t know he still possessed, Krystylx’s arm shot upward. He swayed slightly, pushing his hand as high as he could. The red robed man noticed and quickly approached. He lowered Krystylx’s hand and kneeled down, “You wish to leave this place? You wish to serve our Lord?”

Krystylx nodded slowly, then croaked, “Yes.”

The priest smiled, “Excellent.”

He stood up and gestured for his brethren to gather Krystylx. Looking around, the priest shouted, “Rejoice, rejoice, for another soul has been saved. All praise Lord Nessus, the High Lord of the Nine!”

The training was brutal, and many of his fellow students died during testing. Of the thirty-three who started with him, only six survived training. An auspicious number, according to the High Priest.

Six years after leaving the mines, Krystylx found himself standing in the center of a massive ritual chamber surrounded by red-robed priests. He and his peers waited patiently for the sign, then as one, raised their ceremonial knives to their arms, and sanctified their oaths of loyalty and service with their own blood.

RACE FEATURES
Darkvision: Accustomed to life underground, you have superior vision in dark and dim conditions. You can see in dim light within 60 feet of you as if it were bright light, and in darkness as if it were dim light. You can’t discern color in darkness, only shades of gray.

Gnome Cunning: You have advantage on all Intelligence, Wisdom, and Charisma saving throws against magic.

You can have up to three such devices active at a time. When you create a device, choose one of the following options:

Clockwork Toy: This toy is a clockwork animal, monster, or person, such as a frog, mouse, bird, dragon, or soldier. When placed on the ground, the toy moves 5 feet across the ground on each of your turns in a random direction. It makes noises as appropriate to the creature it represents.
Fire Starter: The device produces a miniature flame, which you can use to light a candle, torch, or campfire. Using the device requires your action.
Music Box: When opened, this music box plays a single song at a moderate volume. The box stops playing when it reaches the song’s end or when it is closed.

CLASS FEATURES
Favored Enemy: Humanoids (Elf/Dwarf)
You have advantage on Wisdom (Survival) checks to track your favored enemies, as well as on Intelligence checks to recall information about them.
When you gain this feature, you also learn one language of your choice that is spoken by your favored enemies, if they speak one at all.

Natural Explorer: Underdark
While traveling for an hour or more in your favored terrain, you gain the following benefits:
• Difficult terrain doesn’t slow your group’s travel.
• Your group can’t become lost except by magical means.
• Even when you are engaged in another activity while traveling (such as foraging, navigating, or tracking), you remain alert to danger.
• If you are traveling alone, you can move stealthily at a normal pace.
• When you forage, you find twice as much food as you normally would.
• While tracking other creatures, you also learn their exact number, their sizes, and how long ago they passed through the area.

BACKGROUND FEATURES: Guide
You know the wilderness like the back of your hand. You have spent many days in nights in the wild, sometimes traveling on your own but more often leading others along rarely used tracks and paths.

Skills: Climb, Survival, Swim, and Track.

Trait —- Wanderer: You have an excellent memory for maps and geography and can always recall the general layout of terrain, settlements, and other features around you. In addition, you can find food and fresh water for yourself and up to five other people each day, provided that the land offers berries, small game, water, and so forth.

Here is Selwynne, Half-Elf Bard for Submission.

I've got the background, Appearance, Personality and basic stats sorted. Just have to finalise all the details. I did have them done, but the forum ate my post. I should have them up some time tonight.

Sorry I didn't have it last night, I couldn't access the forums.

Appearance

Spoiler:
Selwynne is a handsome, well dressed Half Elf. He prefers to dress in bright (almost garish) colours, favouring Oranges, Yellows and Purples. Occasionally, when something more subdued is required (he would say drab), he deigns to tone it down to Dark Blues and Reds. Although a not large by any means, when meeting him, people are surprised by just how slight and small of stature he actually is. He presence and personality make him seem larger than he actually is. While not necessarily boisterous, he none the less has the big, strong, clear voice characteristic of most bards, which he uses to good effect to usually dominate the conversation no matter the size or makeup of the group. He is easy going, willing to talk to anyone, although he has a way of drawing information out of his conversation partners, while giving away very little himself. He is always on the look out for a new story to spin, and looking forward to hopefully writing a few himself about his own exploits, that the bards will sing about for ages to come.

Backstory

Spoiler:
Selwynne is the rare Half-Elf that has been raised (mostly) by his father Nathaniel. Both his parents were never the type to settle down, his mother a typical Elf, preferring to wonder the wilds, and not be tied down, his Father a bard, enjoying the sights and sounds of the big cities. Nevertheless, by chance they fell in love, and once they had a child on the way, they decided they should try and settle down and make it work, for the sake of the child, with a plot of farm land from his parents.

Within a couple of years of his birth, wanderlust hit his mother again, and she shot through, leaving his father to raise Selwynne on his own. He only lasted another couple of years, before itchy feet, led to him leaving Selwynne in the care of his Grand Parents (Solomon and Naomi), and hitting the road for the life of a Bard.

A few times every year, his father would return with amazing tales of the sights he had seen, but would always leave again after a few days. But still, Selwynne loved his father, and constantly dreamt of hitting the road for the life of a Bard.

When he was just 13, tragedy struck, and his Grandparents (who had basically raised him for the past decade), both tragically died as sickness struck their village, and when his father returned home, having no ties to his local village (always being an outsider, due to his obviously Elven Parentage), Selwynne hit the road with his father for the wandering life of a bard.

The reality of the day to day battle of survival fell well short of the stories told by his Father, yet, finally he was with his dad, and Selwynne loved the life of a bard, quickly establishing himself as a very capable, and talented support and backup act for his Father. Within a few short years, his natural ability soon saw his talent actually surpass his Father, but as a young boy of only 15 years of age, he remained a dutiful son, and was happy to remain in a backup / support role for his Father. His Father however, Jealous of his sons obvious bardic talent, took to drink to deal with the massive hit to his ego, realising his son had now surpassed him. This of course led to his performances to continue to go down hill, and Selwynne to take on an ever greater role in the "joint" performances.

Everythgin came to a head, the day after Selwynne's 18th Birthday. After a night off celebrating his son Coming of Age, both Nathaniel and Slewynne woke up late in the afternoon. Selwynne seeming as fresh as a daisy (the blessing of the swift recovery of youth), while his Father suffered with a massive hangover (and probably was also still a little drunk). Unable to take yet one more shot to his already shattered and fragile ego, Nathaniel went straight downstairs to the bar, continued right where he left off the night before.

Needless to say, when it was time for them to hit the stage that night, Nathaniel was in now shape to perform, barely able to even stand, and slurring every word. Thinking to cover for his Father, Selwynne performed solo, to rave reviews and rousing reception, called for 3 encores.

A few days later with news of Selwynne's virtuoso performance all over the city, finally the proprietors of the larger, established, respectable establishments came calling, looking to book follow up performances. Nathaniel thought his was finally the big break he had been looking for all these years, only to be absolutely devastated as time after time, proprietors not only didn't know who his was, but were not at all interested in him, only looking to book Selwynne for a solo performance.

This was the final straw for Nathaniel, and he and Selwynne had a massive fight right there in the common room, Nathaniel accusing his son of the arrogance and selfishness of youth, and Selwynne only seeing his Father resentful at Selwynne's chance of success and a greater life.

Nathaniel stormed out of the tavern, and out of Selwynnes life, finding his solace in the bottom of a bottle, and doomed to a life eeking out a living as an alcoholic bard, playing watever low-rent tavern and flophouse was willing to provide a bed, a meal and a line of credit at the bar.

Selwyne went from strength to strength over the next decade, as his ability and fame only increased. As he travelled, he kept an ear out for any news of his Father, but rarely were they ever in the same town, and even if they were, Nathaniel had left long before Selwynne heard of it.

Finally, in the weeks after his 30th Birthday, Selwynne finally got news that Nathaniel was in the same town, and set out to find, and hopefully reconcile, with his Father. He found him in a dive of a tavern, barely recognising the stooped, old, and haggard old man up on stage, and managed to catch the end of Nathaniel's rambling, haphazard "performance." Over a drink after the show, they patched things up, his Father mellowing as he aged, admitted his jealousy and envy, and Selwynne for his part acknowledged he could have been more gracious.

However, as they left the tavern, they were assailed by a group of Drow thugs, sent sent by their boss to deal with Nathaniel. As he had sank further and further into the mire over the past decade, his schemes had got ever more risky and desperate, and had finally caught up with him, as he crossed the wrong Drow, and now it was time to pay the price. Selwynne left to his Father's defence, but even the two of them were no match, and the last thing Selwynne remembers before he blacked out, was seeing two of the thugs standing over his Father, as Nathaniel begged them to at least spare his son.

The next thing Selwynne knew, he woke up in a cell, in the dark, with only the clothes on his back.

I'd be interested in submitting a character for review, but she's got a custom race and custom class. If recruitment is still open, I can pm you a copy of my charsheet (already built her as already exercise in theorycraft, so all I have to do is create an alias and type it up).
