What city is most like New York in Golarion?

Lost Omens Campaign Setting General Discussion

I think Absalom seems a lot like Manhattan, being a really big port city that takes up an entire island.

Maybe, but Manhattan is really close to the coast and isn't in a sea between two continents. Also, the climate is probably a bit different.

That said, you could definitely draw parallels, though I doubt they were intentional. Largest city in its region (continental US), port city on an island like you said, culturally and ethnically diverse, crowded, the former home of a god ahem ahem no one read that.

Are you thinking geography, socio-cultural role in its country, socio-cultural role in the world, socio-economic role in its country, socio-economic role in the world, or some other metric?

Role in the world and socio-economic mainly

Manhattan is only part of new York city. you still have queens, Brooklyn, the Bronx and Staten island.

Staten Island is rightful New Jersey clay.

Either Almas or Augustana.

If New York City is the first city of the world (which it probably won’t be by the next decade, but who can say) then Absalom is your analogue. “If I can make it there, I can make it anywhere,” certainly applies.

Magnimar and Korvosa have been compared to San Francisco and Los Angeles, respectively. Sothis, Westcrown, and Oppara don’t really fit. You could make an argument for Katheer. But my vote goes to Absalom.

I always compared them to Metropolis and Gotham City. I mean, Korvosa even has its own Batman!

I compare Korvosa to Antwerp and Magnimar to Rotterdam.

Back in High School, when I was getting brochures from various colleges, one from NYU touted it as "Conveniently located at the center of the universe." That's Absalom.

What, does NYU own real estate on the corner of First and 1st now?

Institution is truly a parasitic landlord.

Well, this was back in '97, I believe.

NYU has purchased a great deal of New York City, which has a lot of people upset. An entire neighborhood has become NYU dorms and housing and this had drastically altered the socioeconomic landscape.

NYU is like the borg. they have even started assimilating parts of downtown Brooklyn.

I'm not sure about Absalom as NYC, IMO, it's probably closer to London (England of course). The city doesn't cover the whole island (any more than london does), but it is the capitol of the nation that does dominate it. Major Trading Port, Financial center, cosmopolitan, Check, check, check.

Okay, so that brings up the question: What's the Absalom equivalent of NYU?

I would argue that, due to the Inner Sea's clear status as a Mediterranean Sea analogue, Absalom is more like a mixture of major Mediterranean cities throughout history with lots of fantastic elements added (most notably the Starstone and stuff). However, the point of this thread is to figure out what city could be interpreted as analogous to NYC, not what city Absalom is analogous to.

Though now that I think about comparing geography...what if it's Segada? The Mahwek seem to be partially inspired by the Haudenosaunee (AKA Iroquois) Confederation (northeast located, have a coalition of kingdoms, name sounds similar to Mohawk) so it kind of fits...

Well, I guess New York traffic can get pretty hellish at times ;)

The Pathfinder Society?

That is what my friends at the Aspis Consortium told me, at least.

I don't know much about NYU (I'm a Minnesotan), but I'd assume it's equivalent in Absalom would be the Arcanamirium, which bills itself as the Inner Sea's premier spellcasting school.

That thought occurred to me. The equivalent to New York City should exist in Arcadia, probably in the future of the setting.

Geographically, the Isle of Kortos seems to correspond to Cyprus, except that the real Cyprus has no city comparable to Absalom.

Not at all. The Iroquois never occupied the territory of present-day Greater New York. It, Long Island, the lower Hudson valley, and most of the Delaware valley, was the land of the Lenape peoples.

Anyway, Absalom is more or less a mashup of Istanbul (for population and as a center of trade) and Jerusalem (for its centrality to powerful religions), transplanted as you say to Cyprus or possibly Sicily.

Good point, though it's still roughly in the northeastern area. I don't think Segada was intended to represent anything in particular, though, to be honest.
