New roleplayer and Pathfinder 2 question.

General Discussion

I'm new to table top roleplaying, but I love Pathfinder ever since I got the beginner box, and I even have the Starfinder rulebook now. I was wanting to get the Core rulebook for Pathfinder, as well as a lot the extra books (I have a lot on PDFs thanks to Humble Bundle)

Though here is the problem, would I be wasting time and money on all that if Pathfinder 2 is just gonna come out and change things? Should I just wait or is that not how things work? Again, I'm new to all this, so I don't know what I don't know.

I'm not much of a forum guy either (forgets to check them) so as well as replying to this post, I would also be happy to discuss it over Discord!

If you love Pathfinder 1e then feel free to stick with it. The existence of PF2 doesn't invalidate PF1.

The switch to 2e does means there will be no new 1st party material for PF1 but there is already a ton out there for you to explore as well as a ton of 3rd party material (and I expect some 3rd party publishers will keep doing PF1 material). PDFs of Pathfinder stuff will be available for a good long while though physical copies will get scarce since they probably wont do any more printing runs.

Your Humble Bundle PDFs are going to be compatible with the current Core Rulebook, not the upcoming 2e book. If you want to play with your current PDFs, you would want to use the current ruleset, though if you're not sure if you're going to upgrade to the new edition, I would point you toward the rules available for free online (at Archives of Nethys (note that it's down as I type this), the legacy PRD, d20srd, or d20pfsrd.com).

You can also buy the PDF of the Core Rulebook for $10, if you want.

After you've taken a look at the new ruleset when it's available in August, you might decide to purchase that book instead or stick with 1e and get the hardcopy then.

Thanks for the replies! It really helped a lot!

I absolutely recommend going in on the humble bundle and getting all the PF1 books. First, there's no guarantee that 2nd edition is going to be a big hit. Second, lots of the PF1 material is useful inspiration or information for PF2 games, after all, they're the same world and no big earth shattering changes have happened in the lore. Third, PF1 is a legitimately good game, and though PF2 looks like it'll be my current group's main system, if someone asked me to join a PF1 game I would instantly agree.

Even better than that for the Core rulebook PDF, you can currently get it on Humble Bundle for $1 or more (along with Bestiary 1 and some others). I'm not sure if this is the bundle the original poster was referring to, or a previous one. The current bundle is a great deal and a good way to get a lot of core material for cheap. The rules info won't carry over to PF2, but the setting information most certainly will. The Inner Sea World Guide is available at the $8 level, and Inner Sea Gods at $15 level along with the Varisia and Magnimar sourcebooks. And even some rules-heavy books will have a lot of material that will carry over. But the majority of that bundle does seem to be rules material. Inner Sea World Guide and Inner Sea gods in particular are great books that will mostly be usable with PF2, although the setting is going to get a bit of an update, mostly by the assumptions of the PF1 adventure paths being completed. But most of the material will be largely unchanged. And we still don't know when a new setting book is coming, I'd assume early in the PF2 release cycle, but maybe not.

I'm also not sure if you checked out the Playtest. It's not PF2, but it does give some idea of some of the changes coming. So you can see if you like the general direction they're going, just keep in mind that many things will change between the playtest and the final game (like resonance being stripped).

Have you been using the various SRDs? I find them a great way to try before you buy and while not easily usable at the table are a reference for adventure prep and similar chores.

Anyway, own advice is to wait for PF2 either way. If you like it, buy it instead. If you don't, grab up manuals from your FLGS' bargain bins at a steep discount - it's win/win!
