Simple Weapon for Sorcerer

Advice

Hi all,

my DM offers my group to chose a weapon that we ll get for free. I am playing a enchanter kitsune sorcerer and so I am only able to use simple weapons:

So what would be your weapon of choice?

Regards

PS: Char build is similar to this https://paizo.com/threads/rzs2opcd?So-Kitsune-Sorcerer#13

So you're beginning the game with Enchantment spells carrying a high DC to resist. Do you NEED a weapon? At level one with a Daze cantrip that you could spam all day you drop a DC 16 Will save on a single monster 4HD or less and make it lose its next action.

The average high save at this level is +4, meaning if they're affected by Daze the monster has less than a 50% chance of even succeeding. If over half the time the monster you face stops acting for a round, your fellow PCs will mop the floor with it.

And that's just the cantrip.

Still if you need a weapon, here's a couple suggestions:

1. Crossbow (Light or Heavy): Dex bonus to attack, no Str penalty to damage; the most bang for your buck

2. (if taking Weapon Finesse and eventually 2 Weapon Fighting) Sickle: Dex to attack using Weapon Finesse, you can attack with it and your Bite natural weapon (Bite takes a -5 Penalty) on a Full attack, or with 2 Weapon you can sickle AND bite, both at a -2; while both has a penalty to damage from Str you can use spells to reduce that; Sickle can be used a Trip weapon

Depending on your DM's level of cheese tolerance, a heavy underwater crossbow is worth 100 gp. Sell it for 50 gp, and use the money wisely - say a couple of trained attack dogs ... (guard dog, 25 gp).

On a less cheese level, I typically equip my sorcerers (assuming no atypical weapon proficiencies) with:

1) a light crossbow for plinking (preferred non-magic combat mode), a heavy crossbow is an alternative, but I prefer the rapid reload & lower weight of the light version.
2) a longspear (primary weapon, reach) or a morningstar (no reach, but 1 handed, allowing use of a buckler - darkwood or mithril have no spell failure),
3)a cestus (backup weapon that doesn't occupy a hand slot while ready, offers variable damage type, can't be disarmed - overall a great backup, and enchantable at higher levels with useful enhancements - defending, dueling, etc.), and
4)a dagger (a knife is a useful tool)

Just say you want the Shadowstaff should be sufficient for your needs.

I agree with the others, you should take a crossbow. That way you have a reliable ranged weapon. If you feel like you need a backup melee weapon and don't have the gold to get one - clubs and quarterstaffs are always free.

Some people dump strength very hard on their sorcs & wizards. If you're one of those, no weapon will ever be useful to you. Even if you have 8 Str or so a crossbow is barely worth carrying; I once played a sorcerer up to 7th level and never had her fire her crossbow once (OK, it was in Kingmaker where days with many combats are rare, but still.)

Unless your GM is planning to give you a significantly enchanted weapon, don't worry overmuch about this.

Silver Crusade

Your priority is to go first so that you can shut down dangerous targets.

Ask for a masterwork dagger, ~300gp (eventually adamantine for an extra 3000gp).
Make it +1, 2000gp.
Make it Training, and slap Improved Initiative on it, 6000gp.
Make it Dueling, 14000gp.

Here you get +8 to Initiative with a single item (although it will take time :p)

Another alternative, if your GM is willing: your level 1 free weapon is an Acid Flask.

Firing Acid Splash armed with one deals 1d3 +1 damage. You can spam this damage all day. If the average damage required of PCs at level 1 is 3.75 (average CR 1 monster = 15 HP; average party is 4 members; 15/4 = 3.75 damage) and the average damage/round with your Acid Splash + Acid Flask is 3 damage, you're nearly there.

Per the build posted in the thread above, you've prioritized Dex over Str. If you take the spell Reduce Person, buy some scrolls of it with your starting gold, and use this buff on yourself before combat, you're attacking your foes with Acid Splash at +4 to hit their Ranged Touch. Take the feat Point Blank Shot or Arcane Strike and your Acid Splash is dealing about the same damage as a 1d6 crossbow bolt with the same accuracy, it isn't bothered by many low-level monsters' DR and remains fairly relevant to successful contribution of damage through 1st and 2nd level.
