Need Character Creation Advice on making a Roguish Hunter

Advice

I am taking a stab at being a Hunter. I decided I want to be melee and my goal is to use DEX rather than STR and get flanking whenever possible while also getting all the AoOs I can.

We currently do not have a party member who can disable devices. I love rogue characters and wanted to make my hunter stealthy/sneaky and be able to disable traps etc. My DM has outlawed SPLAT material and the only traits I can find to allow my hunter to disable device are from SPLAT.

I was thinking I could take a lvl or 3 of Unchained Rogue in order to gain disable device as well as using my DEX instead of STR for melee.

I don't know anything about multi classing, I read that it can really hurt your BAB to multi class.

This was my idea for character build. I am extremely open to suggestion:
Human
STR : 12
DEX : 16 (includes human +2)
CON : 14
INT: 13 (need 13 for Combat Expertise)
WIS : 14
CHA : 10

I thought taking 3 lvls of Hunter then my 4 lvl will be untrained rogue.

Can anyone give some advice on how to best build this character?

How important is it that you be a Hunter? You want Dex. You want Flanking. You want Sneak Attack Damage and Disable Devices. Does it have to be a Hunter? Are there any classes that are off-limits to you?

I see Human. What about other Races? What Races are you willing/allowed to be?

I haven't found it hurts your Attack Bonus necessarily. It usually hurts your Caster Level. And if you like high-level Class Abilities, kiss them good-bye.

Multiclassing can be awesome if you are building a character upon the accumulation of bonuses and Feats rather than the attainment of high-level class abilities. I love multiclassing: a Feat here, a level 1 ability there, the ability to use some magic wand, and you just might have something awesome.

I have some ideas for characters that do lots of Sneak Attack Damage where you should be able to be good at roguish stuff.

I really like the idea of having an animal companion to flank/trip with. I think the dynamic would be awesome.

Core races only.

My DM did say I could use Vagabond Child (urban) or Criminal traits which allow me to use disable device as a class skill.

He also said that Disable device can be used if you put skill ranks into it but I was under the impression that only classes with the class skill Disable Device could put ranks into it. I could be, and probably am, very wrong.

If I take one of the above traits then I should be able to make my Hunter sneaky and stealthy with the right skills without taking levels of rogue.

I am interested in your build ideas.

you can just put ranks into it and use it but without a level in a class trap finding the uses are limited. This is the important part of trap finding.

"A rogue can use Disable Device to disarm magic traps."

This all said anyone can find traps all you have to do is say I want to look for traps. There are ways to "disarm" without the skill.

If you go this way you may want to consider the sandman bard for some extra spells, a spell list to use wands from. Or, something like an investigator for inspiration.

If you hop over to archives of nethys and use the search function to look for trapfinding you may find much better dips.

Sovereign Court

Forgive me for not hyperlinking but this feat is essentially power attack for dex.

Start with the 3 levels of UnChained Rogue, it's full BAB, loads of skills, weapon finesse, and Dex to damage. Pick up your trap crap and bounce.

If you play around with the archetypes, you can probably walk away with some other neat rogue trick or skill unlock to help you along the way. Seeker of the Lost gets additional bonuses to finding and disarming magical traps.

Then experiment with your chosen Hunter class, try find an archetype that compliments your rogue-ish character.

Hunters usually have animal companions for some good flanking opportunities.

After you get what you want from the hunter class, you might want to think about going into the Slayer class.

Hunter is Ranger and Druid, the Slayer is Ranger and Rogue, which really sounds appropriate for the character you seem to want.

But grab all the animal companion/flanking buddy stuff from the Hunter class you can.

I have a hunter with 3 levels of unchained rogue myself. She's a halfling with a boar that she uses as a mount. Get Pack Flanking as soon as possible so you and your companion can flank while side by side. You don't need to take a trait to make Disable Device a class skill since you will get it as soon as you take a level in rogue. You also want the Boon Companion feat so you can level up your companion even if you don't take a level in a class with a companion. But you only get 4 levels from the feat.

The Dirty Fighter trait will give you +1 damage while flanking. You'll get Outflank as a hunter class feature and of course Combat Reflexes is a must. Then get Broken Wing Gambit and Paired Opportunists for more AoOs. And get Keen on your weapon as soon as possible for more crits.

You will want minimum 3 levels of unchained rogue and 3 levels of hunter to get the best from each class for this build.

Also, if you really want to be stealthy, a small race like halfling or gnome would be better than human. You'd get +4 to stealth as well as a dex bump. You will also be able to ride more companions as a mount if you want to go that way. Though if you go with a boar, you'll have to wait until it's level 4 for that.

Hunter Rogue multiclass with Boon Companion & Accomplished Sneak Attacker is a solid build.

Not sure how you're defining SPLAT. I mean, unchained rogue isn't from the core books.

There's a patient ambusher archetype of the hunter in the magic tactics toolbox, reprinted in ultimate wilderness. It's weaker in combat than the usual hunter but it does get trapfinding.

I second this strongly, hunter can be absolutely brutal when combined with Unchained Rogue, but just remember that your sneak attack is going to suffer a bit. Pick up the teamwork feat for +1d6 precision damage, share it with your companion, and just wreck enemies.

Bonus points for using Butterfly Sting to pass crits to a t-rex animal companion.
