Can an adopted "Gnome" ...

Can you take adopted - by Gnomes - trait, and then take Extra Gnome Magic to get 3 uses of Gnome magic a day without normally having the ability to cast any of these as say a human? It says it adds three uses, so 0+3 is 3?

To quote the Extra Gnome Magic trait:

Extra Gnome Magic wrote:

Prerequisites: Cha 13, Gnome.

Benefit: You gain an additional three uses per day of your gnome spell-like abilities (dancing lights, ghost sound, prestidigitation). You can use these in any combination; for example, you can use dancing lights four times in one day (taking all three additional uses for the same spell), or you can cast ghost sound twice, prestidigitation twice, speak with animals twice, and dancing lights once. If you have a feat, trait, or other ability that changes your racial 0-level spell-like abilities to other 0-level spells, this feat applies to them instead.

I think, super-strictly speaking (since this is the Rules Forum), the answer is no. It says "additional uses", so it's basically giving you ammunition but no pistol, so to speak.

The last sentence does give a clause for not having the abilities most gnomes do, but counting being a different race as "a feat, trait, or other ability" is really foggy. Being less literal, if you're asking is it reasonable to allow this for general game health, I would say yes.

You have 3 additional uses of an ability you don't possess. So unless you find a way to actually give yourself that ability, it's useless.

Extra Gnome Magic is a feat. The Adopted trait only allows you to take one Race Trait of your parents' race.

You would require the feat 'Racial Heritage: Gnome' if you want to take gnome feats.

This is the same as the earlier example of using Tail Slap for a human with Kitsune Racial Heritage. If you don't have a tail, ya can't use it. You can take the feat/trait if you wish, it just can't be used until such time as you gain the ability to do so. (Gaining Gnome racial spells or a tail)

L1: Racial Heritage: Kitsune
L1H: Magical Tail
L3: Racial Heritage: Kobold
L5: Tail Terror

Probably not worth the investment.

It's like getting three extra batteries that fit a flashlight. Getting them doesn't get you a the flashlight.

There is a trait called Naturally Gifted that gives you 1 extra use of your gnome SLA's. It still doesn't do anything for someone that doesn't have the base gnome magic, but it's possible to try it with just traits.

You can't take Racial Heritage twice.

EDIT: a kitsune COULD take Human Guise then Racial Heritage: Kobold though.

Can kitsune with 9 tails and kobold tail terror get 9 additional tail attacks?

"with your tail", not "with all of your tails".

If they could, you'd've invented a new weapon, the Fox O' Nine Tails.

Gnomes are already bite sized, and they do keep longer when tinned, but "adopting" them specifically for that purpouse is a bit heartless.

I prefer to purchase Spome in bulk, but some people enjoy the proccess of making their own. They can probably provide you with more efficient avenues to source your raw ingredients.
