No.
It would have not been great.
Sure, I would have loved that MCU got the rights to Fantastic Four. That would have been amazing. But X-Men in MCU right now...would just mess everything up.
Also...this would have been a huge industry shakeup. I love Disney and all, but I am against monopolies, including in the entertainment industry. This would mean that Disney would have the movie and TV rights to X-Men and Fantastic Four, but also:
- The Simpsons
- The Alien franchise
- The Planet of the Apes franchise
- Avatar franchise
- The Predator franchise
- The Kingsman franchise
- Terminator franchise
(But also home media rights to original theatrical versions of Star Wars 4-6, so that would have been neat.)
But what would Simpsons look like if it was produced by Disney? Or Kingsman? Most of these are R-rated movies, a style of film which Disney rarely-if ever-makes.
So yeah. This might still happen in the future, but let's hope it's just the Fantastic Four.

Not saying that. But I resent the idea that Disney owns most major franchises in Hollywood. That would left Universal, Warner Bros, Paramount and Sony with Disney on the field. Studio competition is a good way to generate innovation and progress. If Disney own e v e r y t h i ng and has monopoly-station by buying rest of the Hollywood as well...well yeah, Disney makes good films and I support their progress to diversify their films, but I don't want everything to be a Disney product.

Marc,
No I'm pretty sure the sources I got, it's back to being dead in the water.
Admittedly I'm with people that say "X-men and the wider MCU don't mess well." But at the same time the idea of having the Avengers and the X-men fight against a cabal of Thanos, Apocalypse and Kang is kind of my go to thing.

...for a reason, don't you think? The X-men's world hates and fears mutants and people who are different. The rest live in a world where people often support the people with powers. These two do not mesh. When they have crossed over, it has been glaring.
Sometimes it's glaring. Other times it works fine.
Sometimes the Avengers go do their own "supers must be controlled" thing - like Civil War.
Sometimes the X-Men and the Avengers collaborate against some other threat. Not to mention at least a few X-Men being Avengers over the years - or on other non-X teams.

Here is a recent news article saying talks are dead.
Mark Radle, your link led me to livestream of a random lady talking about the Justice League movie.
I think it's probably for the best it didn't happen--I'd rather not see a monopoly on Hollywood, as good as I think some of Disney's recent work has been.
Now, if buying up Fox News had been part of the deal, I might reconsider for personal opinions on the matter, but it explicitly was not part of the negotiations.
On X-Men joining the MCU... I'd actually rather they not. The X-Men is such a complicated franchise I think they actually do better on their own--they stand out more on their own, where being mutants are the only major source of being "super" (as opposed to various forms of science and tech and aliens). I like the explorations it evokes of looking at human relations and human evolution, and I'm afraid that'd get undercut mixing in with the larger MCU. And while I know it would be interesting to see more comic based interactions happen in some respect... heck, Marvel Comic continuity is pretty complicated and convoluted and X-men are a big part of that. MCU is already getting too convoluted with the introduction of magic (Dr. Strange) and so on, I don't need mutants there too. I love both MCU and X-Men but I don't want to see them come together. Not even to link Scarlet Witch to Magneto. Not even to get the Rogue/Ms. Marvel story. I think both are more likely to remain excellent on their own.
Now, I wouldn't mind the MCU getting their hands on Fantastic Four, but mostly because I want see Captain America to cluck his tongue disapprovingly at that foolish hothead Johnny Storm. :) (Mostly there though I also just want to see a good F4 movie. I don't care who makes it.)

Sounds like you dropped in the middle of the show.
Try again and start from the beginning ...

I do wonder...was release of this news a tactic to maybe start back up negotiations. There is precedent...deadpool only got made once that demo reel was released, and I don't think Spiderman being in the MCU would have happened at all if the Sony leaks hadn't drawn attention to that and put pressure on the studio heads.
As for the potential of a merger...Fox Studios will almost certainly still exist as a studio. Disney is not going to dictate PG-13 Alien and Deadpool movies if they are already profitable. Disney has mostly been hands off on the management of Lucas Film and Marvel other than "MAKE US MONEY". Hell I could even see the R-rated xmen movies still happen in that studio...using Fox as sort of a studio focusing on more mature/adult movies, while Marvel films does more family friendly stuff.
But yeah...big mergers are a bit concerning overall...it's just you can get some fun nerdy speculation out of this...

I agree with you on the X-Men. They actually make a lot more sense in a universe where there aren't other superheroes, to be honest.
I also agree with you about the Fantastic Four, but mostly because I want Doom in the MCU. Could care less about the F4 themselves.

Yeah, it's almost like comic book history before the 1990's shouldn't and doesn't matter...

What ever that takes, I'm willing to accept.
:)
Then what are they waiting for?!?!?!?!?!?
:)
(Besides Canada increasing its buying power by a factor of 10 or so...)

Well considering they own marvel and are about to have their own version of Netflix which means migrating the Netflix different defender serieses over including Punisher. I don't think the worry that Disney will make all their tittle PG is entirely founded.
That's not happening. Netflix has the rights to the Defender family of shows so they will stay on Netflix. They can't introduce any new ones (so Punisher should be the last one) and they lose the rights to the existing ones if they go x number of years without making a new season, but for the time being those shows will stay on Netflix. I think we can safely say now though that they will be never, ever referenced in the movies and are no longer part of the MCU.
It's clear that Disney want the 20th Century Fox content library for their new streaming service. It would be an absolutely massive amount of content. It's not just what's listed above, it's all their TV shows as well, including AMERICAN HORROR STORY, BUFFY, ANGEl, FIREFLY, DOLLHOUSE, SARAH CONNOR CHRONICLES, FRINGE, FAMILY GUY, THE ORVILLE, 24, HOW I MET YOUR MOTHER, ROSWELL, SPACE: ABOVE AND BEYOND. Hell, it's LOST IN SPACE and VOYAGE TO THE BOTTOM OF THE SEA as well.
My guess is that this has stalled on the price. I suspect News Corp would value this pretty high, probably north of $10 billion (maybe north of $20 billion) and although Disney can afford that, they'd need to think about it carefully.

I thought Alpha Flight was entirely a Mutant thing. I mean they have mostly mutants on the team...
Same reason that Excalibur is off the table. (The team, not the item or even Brian Braddock.)
The only mutants on the original Alpha Flight team were Northstar and Aurora. Guardian/vindicator had a power suit. Shaman was, well, a shaman. Snowbird the daughter of a goddess. Sasquatch a hulk-like experiment, later revealed as the body of a Great Beast. Puck originally a normal human acrobatic adventurer, later revealed to be hosting some sword/demon/spirit thing. Marina was alien.
They did first show up in the X-Men.
No real idea about all the others over the years, but at least some of those have generally been the core of the team.

thejeff,
I'm aware but I thought that Alpha Flight was all about Wolverine too.
They had relations, if memory serves, but part of the reasoning behind Alpha Flight (and Beta Flight, and Gamma Flight) was the idea that Canada needed more than 'just one super' to do what needed to be done for defense reasons.
I didn't see Box mentioned in the run-down. :>
Alpha Flight would be a very interesting property to work into the MCU, I think.
Difficult, but not impossible... I mean, they took a bunch of interstellar rejects and made a group of some-time heroes out of them, right?

Yeah, Wolverine was supposed to be their front man, but Xavier recruited him away. He was never actually a member, other than in backstory.
And Box was Beta Flight? I think. At first. Lots of others passed through, but that original team was the core for the early years at least.

yeah...in hindsight that is my general sense as well. A Disney streaming channel would be able to attract folks with kids, but might not be able to compete sucessfully with the netflix for the folks who don't occupy that bracket. Marvel and Star Wars, movies I am likely to end up owning on blue ray, are simply not enough of a draw for me to sign up for yet another streaming service. If they brought in the Fox movies that suddenly gets a lot more tempting, since that positions to be able to provide a lot more content that is likely to interest me.

Personally, I'm rooting for this deal for selfish reasons.
I want the FF and most importantly DOOM in the MCU.
The X-men are probably going to continue to be in their own corner or they're going to find a way to reboot the X-men (yet again...). Disney has made R-rated movies before under both their Touchstone Pictures imprint as well as Miramax. And I'm pretty sure Miramax made a buttload of R-rated movies in the 90's and 2000's.
So the whole Disney won't truck with R rated movies is patently false.
Most importantly I hope that they acquire Fox so that we can finally get our home video versions of STAR WARS, EMPIRE and JEDI pre-Lucas alterations on BD.
Like I said, selfish but WANT.

Fine Marc, you were right. Here's your cookie *hands Marc an Oreo*
Regardless I'll wait around before I get my hopes up for Galactus and the Avengers fighting each other...
If you're offering, I'll take a Fig Newton instead please.
I was mostly just kidding (maybe 90% kidding; 10% smug told you so)
I think it's only a matter of time until the Fantastic Four and company are back with Marvel where they belong ...

If only I had the time to watch 90 min youtube vids all day.....
Ha! Was that to me?
I wish I did too! I actually listen to shows such as Movie Talk more like a podcast while I'm working. The episode of Movie Talk I suggested folks check out was actually only around 50 minutes long total, and the part about the Disney / Fox talks was right at the beginning and was only about 10 or 15 minutes long
Fair points though!
Oh, and Fig Newtons are awesome, especially with coffee :)
