Why can't Scholars study social science?

So I've been trying to figure out how to make a xenosociologist or a xenoarcheologist. So I look at Xenoseeker and they seem more interested in finding new life to study opposed to finding old cultures or dead cultures to study. I look at Scholar which should be a dead ringer and well...apparently History Scholars aren't a thing. They either specialize in Life Science or Physical Science but not Social Science (which also doesn't exist but has a skill that's fairly close, Culture).

I think Xenoseeker is supposed to take that role.

Well, the theme doesn't net you that particular skill, but it's easy enough to nab that.

Of course, if you want that extra +1, it's easy enough to replace.

It's a little more involved to make a whole new theme, but it could work.

I'm also under the impression that the themes presented in Core are only the first themes they're making - more are forthcoming.

I might look into this later, but I'm afraid that's all I've got right now. Hope it helps!

Grab the skill synergy feat.

Archaeologist is one of the examples given for professions, so xenoarchaeologist should also be a profession. The "xeno" may even be redundant, unless you want to specialize in "Crypts of Absalom Station" or something.

Fair point.

I would argue that "social science" isnt a hard or real science which might be why its not a choice

It is. Science is just a process. It's hypothesis formation, testing, data analysis, and reformation of the hypothesis until we have an explanation for some phenomenon. There are some other important aspects, like your hypothesis has to he falsifiable, but that's the gist of it.

The social sciences are not a hard science, but a soft one, because data analysis is really freaking challenging and we often can't use hard mathematical analysis. But that doesn't mean it's not a science.

Yeah, let's not get into a "are the soft sciences really science?" debate. I get enough of that at work.

I think in Starfinder, a student of social sciences goes to Envoy school and learns Culture, Diplomacy, and Sense Motive, none of which have any synergy with Scholar.

Archeologists, on the other hand, have to get their hands dirty and use tools and analyze samples. Some knowledge of hard sciences would be useful.

Something that doesn't quite fit the others is just what the themeless theme is for. Pick up culture for knowledge of history or engineering for architecture as appropriate to your class. The +2 comes from having studied similar things from history. Trying to patch up a dune buggy? Lucky for you an ancient Vesk culture build their engines just the same way. And you would pick culture for extensive studies of course. If in a home game I were running I'd probably even give them a -5 to the DC for knowledge of ancient history, but that's just me.

Honestly, it's one of two things: 1st, so it doesn't overlap with the xenoseeker, which I suppose would preclude archaeology (and arguably, field sociology/anthropology), or 2: because they're going to make another theme along those lines at some point.

I'm even more disappointed you can't be a beleaguered space doctor (since Medicine isn't an option either), so I'm hoping that gets expanded at some point.

Personally, if my players ask me about it, I'll just let 'em pick Culture instead of Life/Physical Sciences if they want.
