mmm chicken lo mein this time. was quite proud. First time using mirin and dark soy sauce (taste is noticeably different btw.)

I haven't seen Kileanna in awhile. I think she is hiding.

Good on you. Mirin, japanese soy, sake and rice vinegar build a whole new univverse of flavours. :)

I made fleather pannacotta with raspberries and lime juice. It was superb... and so easy.

That sounds amazingly good. googled it. It looks kind of jello pudding-ish.

*Kileanna is going to sleep after working 3rd shift*
*She has also been missing because she has been spending too much of her free time drawing and doesn't check the boards too often*

well get some sleep!

Pannacotta is not as jiggly as jello. It is a similar idea, though.

I've been having coffee panna cotta this days. I love it.

I have read the old posts on many threads now. I am sorry for your loss, Syssil.

Thank you. I suppose I will get my emotions in order eventually. As it is, it is pretty vague.

I lost both my grandparents by my mother side last year after they raised me and took charge of me when my mother passed away.

Everything I can say sounds like cheap psychology, so I just don't know what to say more that I can feel your loss, and if you need something, here I am.

Thank you.

Sissyl, I know how hard it is to lose a parent. My father died from a degenerative neuro-muscular condition in 1999. I was emotionally numb for several months, but I did get better over time. If you need a virtual shoulder to cry on, or an ear to vent into, I'm here.

Sorry I haven't been posting very much the past several days, guys. I've just been very busy doing this, that, and other things.

Thank you. It means a lot to know there are people who care around.

I guess I've missed something somewhere. I don't know what's happened, Sissyl, but you have friends here if you need to talk about it.

You should stop by deep 6 FaWtL, it's the happening place to be.

I may just do that!

My mother died. Cancer. She knew from the start how it would end. She had four very good months before two weeks of some pain and a bit of confusion. It ended quietly during her sleep.

I am relieved it is over. And I miss her. So it is some very mixed feelings right now.

OH no. I'm so sorry. And the mixed feelings are natural; we're glad when someone who is suffering no longer has to do so, but the absence in our hearts takes a long time to heal.

I'm sorry, Sissyl. I just went through the loss of my own mother in June. I completely understand the mixed feelings. Hang tough.

*smiles* Distracting myself. Have soon seen all the movies they are showing. Well. The job of dealing with it all is big enough to wait a few days.

I'd like to say that, with all the walking that I've done recently, I've lost some weight. My belt is using the fourth hole from the tip for the first time in a long time. :)

Library's closing. I'm going home. Good night, everybody.

::Orc hugs for Sissyl:: Sorry to hear about the loss of your mother

Got an unlimited supply of burly orc e-hugs though...

So, ... Anyone make anything interesting, recently?

I plan to bake some chicken breasts later, but they're nothing special. I just douse them with garlic powder, cumin, chili powder, and black pepper with a healthy dose of lemon juice. I'm not a good cook, but I manage to keep myself alive.. lol

Years ago, before the death of my one brother, I would roast boneless chicken breasts, cover them in Pasta sauce and top them with sliced Provolone. Then the four of us ( myself, my mother, and my two brothers ) would have chicken sandwiches and fries on the D&D game nights.

Good afternoon ( or evening ), everyone.

Howdy.

Hey, Cal. How are things, today?

Okay... currently "enjoying" a QP cheese meal. The things we do to avoid "I am hungry and surrounded by idiots, everyone is horrible and the world needs to be blown up". Grrrrg.

Still feel weird about my mother. Things are going well, I suppose. People are nice to me. I guess I have to see what the funeral brings.

Mmm...so far ok. Dealing with a lot of chronic pain, but better living through chemistry and all that.

Just put the finishing touches on a game for this weekend. A lot of my players will be gone, so I'll only have 3 players (something that hasn't happened in a long time) so it was hard to come up with something, but in a flash of inspiration that took about 10 minutes to write down I came up with something last night. I think it'll be a pretty fun outing for them. Oh, and dangerous. Fun and dangerous. Dangerously fun. You get the idea.. lol

How are things with you today?

Doing okay. Did some grocery shopping earlier, before it got too hot here. I found it convenient to have on-hand some of the old Dungeon Magazine "Side Treks" for just such occasions. Most of them are for 1st or 2nd Edition AD&D, but you could use the maps and concepts, convert them for your game system of choice, and roll with it.

Class registration for Pea Bear went well, walking home for celebratory sundaes.

Sissyl, I know exactly how that feels. After my brother's suicide, and again after my father's death, almost everything tasted like ashes. Well, not really, but you get the idea. The funeral will give you some closure, but the holidays will still be hard for a while. About ten years after Dennis's suicide, I got the feeling that he wouldn't want me to stay sad. That was when I resumed playing D&D, which was up to 3.0 by then, I think. This November will be the 20th anniversary of his suicide. I'll let everyone know how I'm holding up.

Good morning, everyone.

Good morning.

Mornin.

I suck. I thought this was about waffles being superior, because pancakes are like cake, and cake is like the devil, that if you like them, most other people hate you. Hoenstly, I hate the taste of cake and pancakes, but waffles, and amazing crepes, and cupcakes are fine.

However, since we are talking about proper food, you good have peacon pie year round. and you good use the good bourbon when making it.

I like this guy. He knows how to appreciate pecan pie.

Do you have a recipe?

This is the classic recipe:

1 cup Karo® Light OR Dark Corn Syrup
3 eggs
1 cup sugar
2 tablespoons butter, melted
1 teaspoon pure vanilla extract
1-1/2 cups (6 ounces) pecans
1 (9-inch) unbaked OR frozen** deep-dish pie crust

Preheat oven to 350°F.
Mix corn syrup, eggs, sugar, butter and vanilla using a spoon. Stir in pecans. Pour filling into pie crust.

Bake on center rack of oven for 60 to 70 minutes (see tips for doneness, below). Cool for 2 hours on wire rack before serving.

**To use prepared frozen pie crust: Place cookie sheet in oven and preheat oven as directed. Pour filling into frozen crust and bake on preheated cookie sheet.

RECIPE TIPS: Pie is done when center reaches 200°F. Tap center surface of pie lightly - it should spring back when done. For easy clean up, spray pie pan with cooking spray before placing pie crust in pan. If pie crust is overbrowning, cover edges with foil.
======================================================

If you're a true southern belle, you *always* use Karo Dark

Frozen pie crust!

Two sticks of butter.
1 teaspoon of salt.
1 tablespoon of sugar.
2 cups of flour.
1/4 cup cold, cold water (or thereabouts, I don't actually measure the water, just eyeball it).

Chill for 15-30 minutes before rolling out.

Enough for two pie crusts and a little to spare.

Well, to be honest it calls for an unbaked crust first.

I always use a lard crust

For a 9 in single crust pie

1 C unbleached flour
1/2 tsp salt
1/4 C lard

Cut lard into flour until it's about the size of spring peas.

Slowly dribble in up to 2 Tbsp ice water, mixing with a fork until the mass holds together. Depending on how old (dry) the flour is, you may need to add even more water, but only enough to bring the mass together in a shaggy ball.

I don't add sugar because I find that leads to the crust over-browning quite easily. And with all that Karo syrup, you don't really need more sugar.

And having experimented a bit with both lard and butter, I find the lard gives a flakier crust.

Butter side down!

This seems familiar...

Well, you did work in a bakery. :)

I discovered my crepe makin' skills only recently, and enjoy them immensely, but waffles are indeed superior!

All hail the waffle! King of the breakfast food!

I like crepes better.
