For those of you doing the gyms, I've only just found out the following.

-You have to tap the enemy to attack them (some pokemon like Scyther or Slowpoke attack really fast and do more than you'd expect them to even at lower CPs).

-You tap and hold to use your secondary power. Use that when your bars are charged up.

-You can swipe to dodge incoming attacks.

-Sometimes its better to take out the first pokemon at a gym and then retreat over and over. That way you only have to heal up a little between battles.

-Most importantly, if you attack a gym while someone else is attacking (not sure if they need to be on your team or not) they'll assist you in the battle. You'll see their pokemon in the background occasionally attacking, and you can rack up quite a bit of damage this way.

-I usually snipe the lower level gyms to collect the 10 poke coins, sometimes I try to be polite and leave a lower level pokemon so the next person can take it faster. If you're traveling in a group, you can take out a few gyms really quick and rack up more coins and stardust. In those cases its good to leave your more sturdy pokemon behind.

-Also keep an eye out on who is taking back your gyms, you can buy time by picking a counter pokemon to whatever they tend to leave at the gym. (Usually that's their best pokemon, so if you leave a counter it makes it that much harder to take back the gym).

Does anyone know the purpose of throwing a curve ball? I can do it pretty reliably now, but I only rarely get the curveball bonus (which is the same as a Nice bonus).

Downloaded this at work and went on safari around the gym (I work at an actual gym) with my bosses. A lot of Bulbasaurs spawn but they always seem to teleport to the other side of the parking lot whenever I get close -_-

Got home and my house is stuffed with Evees and Clefairys!

Supposedly it has an increase in capture rate, but I don't actually know if that is true.

In addition to the abundance of trash 'Mons in my area (Ratatta, Pidgey, Spearow, Zubat, Caterpie, Weedle, and Venonat) I also seem to have an abundance of Growlithes.

Nah, just tap the screen after the ball wobbles twice.

After nearly a week of playing, my wife and I have only just managed to get two Eevees apiece, yet we keep seeing gyms sporting the various evolved forms. There must be an abundance of Eevees somewhere in our general region, but we sure are having trouble finding the wellspring. :/

Hit as many PokeStops as you can. Spinning the little circle that you see when you tap a PokeStop within range will cause it to spit out items (mostly pokeballs, especially at low levels) and turn purple. In about 5 minutes, it will turn blue again and you can repeat the process. If you can find a place where you can walk in a 5-10min circle while hitting multiple PokeStops, you can hit them all with each lap and really rack up the items.

Also, you get fresh batches of pokeballs every time you level up, so gaining XP is important. You get a little XP each time you hit a PokeStop, thus the above is doubly important. You also get XP for catching pokemon, so if you're close to leveling, spending what few pokeballs you have left on a couple of easy 'Mon that you can probably catch in one try will likely be a good move. Also, when you're low on pokeballs, prioritize the catching of new pokemon over ones that you've caught before; there's a big first-time-catch XP bonus that will help you level up faster to get more pokeballs.

Hope that helps!

It was confirmed by Niantic to be true, and it also gives additional experience on a successful catch.

If you can find a route that is about 5 minutes to walk that is dense with pokestops that is ideal. Poke stops reset every 5 minutes, so if theres a loop around a park, or a block of streets that takes about 5 minutes to walk and has several pokestops you can stack up on items and xp. Also don't be afraid to toss healing items you don't need. You can get full up fast on potion and revives if you are not constantly battling gyms which takes up pokeball space in your item bag.

I have never actively tried to throw a curveball and gotten the bonus, but I will randomly get the bonus for normal throws all the time.

I played around with it a little, and discovered that you don't have to "go all the way" on a curve ball to get the bonus. That is, you're supposed to spin it until it starts glowing, but if you kind of just jostle it enough to turn it over, and throw it before it loses that momentum, you'll still get the curveball bonus.

So, for instance, if you started to throw, but bailed out because you saw the target start to move around, then immediately reinitiate a throw, you could give it just enough spin from that extra bit of motion that it counts as a curveball.

Also, if you touch too much of the screen at once (like if your thumb is lying somewhat flat on the screen), you can confuse the touchscreen enough to make it think you're moving around and spinning the ball.

Your unintentional curveballs might be something like that.

Unfortunately there aren't any pokestops near my house -_-

Ugh, the rampant fluffy aforableness is mocking me, completely safe from any form of counterattack.

I've been throwing away a lot of revives because I wasn't using them, but I ended up regretting that when I tried to take down a very very well defended gym by myself. Taking out a level 8 gym with multiple CP 1000+s and two CP 1500 Executors isn't a joke, but at least I knocked it down to level 6.

The max cp for each pokmeon goes up as you level, my snorlax is over 2k and I am level 22.

I saw a 2500cp dragonite defending a gym on my way into work, don't know the players level (dragonite I believe has the highest cp cap of all pokemon)

Has anyone else been having trouble with their pokemon finder today? I seem to be suffering from a bug that prevents it from properly showing how far away pokemon are from me. Everything shows as three footprints, even when I am right on top of them.

Just got back from my lunch break, and yeah, everything was at 3, even if I was staring at it. Which sucks, because otherwise I'd have chased down a Drowzee (the last I need to evolve one) and a Gastly. >:(

Also had a few freeze-ups.

On the bright side, I managed to catch my first Abra, hatch a Likitung, evolve a Ratatta and a Zubat, and hit 9th level.

Well, at least if everyone is being affected by this bug that means the company is probably scrambling to fix it, lol.

At this point, I really want to be able to trade Pokémon and battle my friends in Pokémon Go. That would be sweet.

I wonder if Niantic is looking at setting up temporary Pokéstops/gyms for events, fundraisers, conventions, and the like, where you can get variant Pokémon? I'm sure some businesses would be super-keen on taking advantage of that option (for a price, no doubt). A purple Golem would be pretty neat for PaizoCon. :D

Bulba spawn around me work during the day, but I haven't been able to catch one. An Ivysaur showed up in the finder when I was getting gas but really wasn't in a position to go hunting -_-

For Charmanders? *shrugs* guess we start heading towards some volcanoes or something.

There's a gas station on my way to work that I stopped at a couple of times, and both times it was chock full of pokemon. The other day there was a Jinx and a Gastly and a couple other things. Today was two Drowzee, a Fearow, a Bellsprout, an Oddish, and I think something else. In like ten minutes.

Is there any evidence for this? The only reliable charmander spawn anyone has found so far in the nycpokego reddit is at the museum of natural history, with the apparent explanation that charmander likes checking out the dinosaur exhibits...

I actually saw a charmander on the nearby list (distance 3) as I was leaving for work yesterday. It broke my heart to not even *try* to hunt for it, but I was already late for work.

I think that was just a random spawn, because I have never seen one of those around my house before.

Grand Lodge RPG Superstar 2015 Top 32, RPG Superstar 2012 Top 32

I got a Charmander as my starter, and another in an egg. I've never seen one in the wild; not even on my "Nearby" list, where I've occasionally seen both Bulbasaurs and Squirtles.

Ironically, I would have picked Squirtle as my starter, but I figured I didn't know where to catch fire-types and had plenty of lakes around (I'm in Minnesota) for catching water-types, so I thought I'd diversify by picking Charmander instead. Had I realized then that evolving requires catching multiples of a single Pokémon, I'd have made the exact opposite choice: give up on Charmander since there's no way I'll ever evolve him, and stick with Squirtle in hopes of an eventual Blastoise.

I've been told that Knolls Atomic Power Lab has Charmander, but getting them is a federal offense.

However, I read on Reddit that naming your Eevee after one of the trainers in the TV show that had the evolved versions (Rainer, Pyro, and Sparky, or something like that), it will determine which version it evolves into. Not sure if it's for real, but worth a try, I guess.

Walked around downtown, where the annual "Fun Fest" was gearing up. Not only were there Pokestops all up and down the main street, and on just about every other corner, at least one restaurant was sponsoring Lure Modules. Unfortunately, they seemed to lure about 95% Zubats. I racked up a bunch of items at all the Pokestops, but found mostly trash Pokemon. The notable exception was a Golbat, about double the CP of anything I'd caught up until then. I maxed out its power, and used him to score my first gym victory!

Then I went to Walmart for groceries, and it wasn't a Pokestop, but it was positively infested with Pokemon, some of them quite good.

I'm about to go for a run, just so I can hatch some of these eggs. I wish it would track my distance while my phone is locked, or the program was running in the background. There are pedometer apps that can do that, so I'm not sure why it insists on using the GPS instead.

Hell, there are GPS apps that can do that. I've got running and biking apps that do it.

It also seems to be really sensitive to connection problems. I wasn't able to stay connected or log back in for most of last night's walk, despite being able to browse the web most of the time.

For that matter, it should have some offline functionality so you can still track distance and hatch eggs, even if the servers are down...

Went on a "PokeDate" with my wife to one of the larger parks in my area. And holy balls, I should have been going there from the beginning. It is ridiculously jam-packed with PokeStops, and lots of interesting spawns. There are places where you can stand in the overlapping area of 3-4 PokeStops at once, which of course means that groups of friends would show up and activate Lure Modules on all of them, then stand in the overlap and be catching something every 90 seconds or so. Sometimes cool things were spawning faster than I could catch them.

At the main conservatory building, there was a gym, and about a dozen PokeStops, all with Lures running constantly. Congregated in the area were about 75-100 people, all with phones out, yelling out when they found something good or cheering about what they'd just caught. It was unreal. Last time I've seen that many people congregated in the park, there was a popular musician performing for them. Had two different bewildered people ask what the hell was going on.

I caught nearly half a dozen each of Eevee, Goldeen, Magikarp, and Oddish; two Magmar; Bellsprout; Abra; Poliwag; Poliwhirl; bulbasaur; squirtle; seel; and maybe a couple others I can't remember (not to mention innumerable jank). Oh, also hatched my first 10km egg (while my first Lucky Egg was running!) and got an Electabuzz.

Man, what a night.

Apparently Pokemon Go is now suffering from a DDoS attack. I figured it wouldn't take very long before that happened.

For what it's worth, the battery saver function allows you to run the program without "playing" it if you turn your phone upside down. You can't use it simultaneously with other apps (i.e. no music from your device), but it saves your battery life and alerts you when something happens, like an egg hatching or a pokemon appearing.

I've got a gym right near my work desk, which is hotly contested. Although I live in a pokestop-rich area, most of the pokemon I've seen are fairly generic. There are a couple exceptions, though: eevees often appear along the road between my lab and my apartment, I saw a pikachu once in the town center, and I just discovered that the soccer field of a nearby school regularly spawns scythers.

I've definitely gotten it to cooperate with music and other programs, like my fitness tracker.

I think you have to open it up, open the other app, get it playing or whatever, then switch back to Pokemon, leaving the other one in the background.

They definitely need to get it to play better with other apps though.
