Liberty's Edge

A help wanted sign nailed to this post flaps in the wind. The corners are worn and the paper is slightly soggy from the rain, but the ink is still legible.

"The Gold Goblin is hiring! We are looking for well rounded individuals from all walks of life. Open positions include: manager, broker, bouncer, chef, and many more! Please contact Nel Sandhal for more information."

"Two adventurers wanted to assist in a trip to the Devil's Elbow, site of the great Skymetal Rush. Join in for Glory, Adventure, And Unlimited Earning Potential. Any skills accepted, all to receive an equal share of the gold. Apply at the Gold Goblin with two references and a resume. Must provide own supplies.

I am looking for a new player or two for my Second Darkness campaign. We have been playing for a little less than two years at this point and are approximately halfway through the second book (Children of the Void). I am less interested in recruiting for a specific character and more interested in finding player who is interested in a long-term game and will be able to maintain a regular posting schedule.

My ideal player

  • is interested in playing the campaign for its own enjoyment, not as a race to finish
  • who has an established history with PbPs
  • is willing to check the thread about once per day and post 2-3 times per week
  • is a team player and willing to work with a group to create a cohesive party
  • enjoys getting into the RP

If you want to submit a character idea that you have, you can go ahead and do so.

Our party is currently (as of who's active)

  • Half-elf cavalier
  • Human samurai
  • Elf bard/cleric who serves as divine support/skills/buff as needed

The Campaign So Far

In the first book of Second Darkness, the party was working in Riddleport for Saul Vancaskerkin, a former crime boss, at a gambling hall called the Gold Goblin. After Saul attempted to murder the party, they took the Gold Goblin for themselves and discovered that a drow was living in the smuggler's tunnels under the gambling hall. The drow's notes indicated that she was part of a larger conspiracy seeking to destroy Golarion.

After defeating the drow woman, a huge meteorite descended from the sky and hit an island south of Riddleport, causing a huge tidal wave and damaging the city. While Riddleport has been rebuilding, rumors that the island (The Devil's Elbow) was full of valuable skymetal began to spread.

The party has gone to the Devil's Elbow to see if there is any skymetal available so that they can retrieve it and sell it to pay for repairs to gambling hall. However, they also have heard rumors that the island is haunted and one of their rival crimebosses, Clegg Zincher, is also on the island. They've determined they need to go back to Riddleport to recruit more workers - that would be you.

Character Creation Rules

Note: A full character is not strictly required, but an idea of what you would like to play would help.

Characters should make sense for this campaign. They can be opportunistic citizens of Riddleport, elves that came to town to investigate rumors of drow, or something else.

  • Level 5
  • 25 Point Buy
  • Core and APG preferred. If you wish to take something from outside these books, please ask first. If you’re taking something from material unavailable on the PRD, please provide a link to it on the Archive of Nethys.
  • Core races and tieflings only
  • Maximum HP first level. After first level, you may roll or take average (to be determined after rolling)
  • Gold: 10,000 gp, but at least 1,500 gp should be in consumables
  • Two traits. Most of the campaign traits deal with the first book, so they are not required at this point but are recommended. You may take the traits from either the Second Darkness player's guide or Varisia, Birthplace of Legends.

gimme some time i just to to fix up a character to meet these creation specifications. Hows an sort of Oracle thief type character.

he is named Scipio Thief lord by night, trade broker/merchant by day. basically he's a chaotic good robin hood type guy

I would love to play in a game like this. Perhaps an elven ranger (would the lantern bearers PRC or archetype be allowed? or an an elven cleric of Calistria?

Liberty's Edge

Ammon - That could suit this campaign. I'd like to it fleshed out more, but it could definitely work.

Talinthal - A Lantern Bearer would be a great choice for this campaign. Rilia, our bard/cleric, is an elven cleric of Calistria, so you would be able to share a common faith.

Oh not to worry i have it fleshed out that's just the very short of it.

This is kind of his backstory, personality and such. I still need to add in a connection to the actual campaign. but this should give a good summation of his personality and such

Backstory:

He wasn't always the Prince of Thieves, He used to be just a nobleman's child. Scipio Le Valiere, the son of Catarina and Massimo Valiere. The child was made to study his entire life in order to inherit the family business of trade, one must have knowledge of all things to be a great business man after all. Engineering and Mechanics were among his favorite things to study .

Young Scipio grew bored of his responsibilities and lost childhood, and when he came of age he sneak out at night and take on his other persona The Prince of Thieves. The Prince would steal from the rich, being involved in his father trade business he often knew who was in town. The money, he would give to orphans and poor children; whether purposeful or not he despised adults. Eventually he became rather well known among the people as the uncatch-able thief, who lead a group of child thieves. Although truth be told he never lead anyone, there was no group just him.

This act of rebellion did not come out of no where, the young Scipio had the spirit of a legendary thief attached to his own. Unbeknownst to him that is were his Talents came from, with those talents came other things. As the Prince, young Scipio became brash, constantly looking for a challenge. As different as the two soul were, they shared a similar love for the sky and for freedom.

The point came when Scipio eventually spent more time among the outcasts and street urchins as the Prince, than he did studying. His parents became more and more suspicious as to the where abouts of their son until eventually they had him followed. That night when he came home, his parent confronted him. Scipio having been found out ran away, worried that his new found freedom would be taken away.

As he ran out of the city, He collapsed his eyes racked with pain. He woke up, his vision clouded. he could no longer see the sky he loved, but he felt as if the connection was stronger than ever. The young Scipio began embraced the his Prince Persona, slowly becoming the legendary thief that was housed in his soul.

Appearance and Personality:

Scipio is a young man with Grey eyes and blonde hair tied back, light stubble he keeps shaven and clean. his normal attire consists of a quilted white shirt which doubles as his armor and a fitted leather vest and leather boots.

As the Prince his attire is similar except he bears a storm grey cloak and wears a mask like this one click here
Scipio himself is a kind, intelligent, young man. Free Spirited, he he has no permanent home And is often traveling, staying in town only as long as wants. His kind heart leads him to helping people who he thinks deserves help, although he is harsher with the judgement of adults than children due to his bad relationship with his parents.

As the Prince he becomes confident and mysterious, this is both accidental and purposeful. As part of this personality is the spirit of the legendary thief that is housed in his soul. He becomes far more focused as the Prince and will do anything to accomplish his mission whatever it be.

When is the cutoff for submissions?

Liberty's Edge

Oof, I knew I forgot something. July 9th is the cutoff day.

Shadow Lodge

I might submit something. I know how you feel about some of my PFS characters' levels of optimization (I am fairly sure you know whose account this is), but I build PbP characters rather differently and I think you'll like them better.

Talinthal, if you don't snatch up the Lantern Bearer concept, I just might. I've always wanted to play one and this sounds like a fantastic opportunity.

I'll have to put some thought into what I'll make though.

Link to profile

Should be pretty much done, there's a link to his mythweavers sheet in the profile. should be completed i chose the campaign trait looking for work, seemed simple enough and fitting.

To be perfectly honest, PbP also allows things other than combat to take center stage, so differences in in-combat ability don't bother me nearly as much. I'd love to see what you come up with, especially since you have a great history of PbPs.

Ammon - Awesome on getting that done pretty quickly. Looking for Work does make a lot of sense.

Shadow Lodge

I am now heavily leaning toward an Elven paladin, who will be taking the Lantern Bearer prestige class at level six. Would you be okay with the Dusk Knight archetype for Paladin?

Liberty's Edge

That looks good to me.

Liberty's Edge

Though, as a note, if you're planning on going frontline fighter, we've got a somewhat cramped frontline as it is.

Shadow Lodge

Awesome. I think they'll make use of the Moonlight Stalker feat too (Ultimate Combat), if you're okay with that one. Most likely an archer, since 1) elf and 2) it looks like we have plenty of melee between a cavalier and a samurai.

I'm getting excited about this character already. I'll get some more details figured out soon!

Liberty's Edge

That feat looks good. Archery would definitely be a better option for this particular group.

Hello, Slothsy,

I have a character concept that would work particularly well with a magus.

Slothsy wrote:

Since the class appears in UM, I thought I'd ask if it was possible to turn in a submission with the class, or if I should aim for something else.

Thank you for your input.

Liberty's Edge

I will permit it. However, I'll need some walk-through with the class because I'm not very familiar with it and how some of the interactions work.

Bonus Bloodline Power Use (2x) Select one bloodline power at 1st level that is normally usable a number of times per day equal to 3 + the sorcerer's Charisma modifier. The sorcerer adds +1/2 to the number of uses per day of that bloodline power.

Cantrips You learn a number of cantrips, or 0-level spells. These spells are cast like any other spells, but they do not consume any slots and may be used again.

Civilized You are well versed in the local laws, customs, and politics. You gain a +1 trait bonus on Knowledge (nobility) checks and Knowledge (local) checks. Knowledge (local) is always a class skill for you.

Claws (Su) You can grow claws as a free action. These claws are treated as natural weapons, allowing you to make two claw attacks as a full attack action using your full base attack bonus. Your claws are considered magic weapons for the purpose of overcoming DR. You can use your claws 7 rounds per day. These rounds do not need to be consecutive.

Draconic Bloodline (Silver) At some point in your family's history, a dragon interbred with your bloodline, and now its ancient power flows through your veins.

Elven Immunities (Ex) Half-elves are immune to magic sleep effects and get a +2 racial saving throw bonus against enchantment spells and effects.

Human-Raised These half-elves were born and raised into accepting human communities, often raised by generations of a single family, or through the charity of churches and temples. These half-elves have the integrated and wary racial traits.

Integrated Many half-elves are skilled in the art of ingratiating themselves into a community as if they were natives. Half-elves with this racial trait gain a +1 bonus on Bluff, Disguise, and Knowledge (local) checks. This racial trait replaces the adaptability racial trait.

Low-Light Vision (Ex) You can see x2 as far as humans in low illumination. Characters with low-light vision have eyes that are so sensitive to light that they can see twice as far as normal in dim light. Low-Light Vision is color vision. A spellcaster with low-light vision can read a scroll as long as even the tiniest candle flame is next to her as a source of light. Characters with low-light vision can see outdoors on a moonlit night as well as they can during the day.

Multitalented (Ex) Half-elves choose two favored classes at first level and gain +1 hit point or +1 skill point whenever they take a level in either one of those classes.

Resilient Growing up in a violent neighborhood or in the unforgiving wilds often forced you to subsist on food and water from doubtful sources. You gain a +1 trait bonus on Fortitude saves.

Resistance to Cold (Ex) You may ignore 5 points of Cold damage each time you take cold damage.
Wary Many half-elves have spent their long lives moving from place to place, often driven out by the hostility of others. Such experiences have made them wary of others' motivations. Half-elves with this trait gain a +1 racial bonus on Sense Motive and Bluff checks.

I'll have a background worked out soon. I see him as a native of Riddleport, looking for adventure (and money).

I've got this guy: Lothan

He's been in a couple of SD campaigns in the past.

I'd like to present Aldous Mor'esti, wandering mage and scholar.

He's been through the Crypt of the Everflame, and was pretty much the only survivor from that particular mission.

I can modify his stats/gear as necessary, but there's the general skeleton of the character.

Sovereign Court

Argh! Right after I got recruited into a another SD campaign... and the party made me change to a different character, not the one I wanted to play. :/

Submitting Gillian Flynn, half-elven Oracle of the Heavens for consideration. I think I've got everything accounted for on her profile but please let me know if I'm missing anything! :)

1d6 ⇒ 5 HP
1d6 ⇒ 1 HP
1d6 ⇒ 1 HP
1d6 ⇒ 2 HP

Sitting at one of the drinking houses in Riddleport, Aldous flips through his notebooks and nurses a glass of wine. Every so often, he raises it to his shoulder, where a small brown and white bird perches. The bird takes a peck at the goblet before Aldous takes a small sip and sets it back on the table.

"You know, Dragon, these rumors may be of no import. Sailors and dockfolk have been known to stretch the truth, from time to time." Aldous grins as the bird appears to speak into his pointed ear, then draws his hair back in an habitual fashion.

"Then again, if there really are dark skinned elves from deep underground, I simply must learn about them."

Aldous is all set to go, he has a fair amount of coin left to spend, but I figure that can be used for a wand of CLW or similar party-useful stuff if and when he's selected for the team.

For your consideration I give you Ravena. I have played with this character up to book three and the background and template were alright by my GM before the group broke up. I would love to have a chance to finish the AP. Just need to buy equipment and tidy the profile up a bit

Liberty's Edge

Thanks for the submissions so far. Things are looking good so far!

Ravena - We're currently in the middle of book two. Did you start book 3 or end it? I'm happy to keep you in mind (and I'm ok with you knowing some of what's coming your way) but would like to know the context.

Hello :)

Jereru:

First, I wanted to talk about me.

I'm a 38 y.o. guy from Spain who works teaching basic English; though I usually make a lot of mistakes, I think my level is high enough for keeping up with the story and posting acceptably.

My work usually grants me time enough to check the forums twice a day, so I don't think posting should be a problem. I play in some other PbP games and, so far, I have been able to maintain the pace.
I have to say, though, that I've been here only for about a year, maybe a bit less, and haven't had any previous experience playing through internet. You are free to check some of my games/posts to have an idea of my style and how I have evolved since I began.

Well, that should more or less answer your inquiries. About the PC, well, I'll make one or re-use an inactive one as soon as I can, depending on the group's needs and what I feel like playing. I guess that won't be a problem.

Thank you! :)

Shadow Lodge

Back from the Independence Day Weekend and getting back to character creation. I'll have a writeup in soon. :)

We got about half way from what I understand

i forgot independence day was a thing....whoops

Dot. I'm working on a cleric

Would you allow eldritch archer from Heroes of the streets? I'd be using it to create an arcane-archer like character (obviously).

AoN link

I'd be making an elf.

4d8 ⇒ (6, 6, 3, 8) = 23

I'm thinking a cleric of Sarenae that came to the town to help it's reconstruction and to help the injured after the wave hit. Not sure on the race yet. Thinking teifling, do you allow variant heritage teiflings?

hp: 4d8 ⇒ (5, 2, 4, 7) = 18 I was gonna take the. Half per level, but wanted to roll, I can still take the half per level yes?

Liberty's Edge

You can take half per level, yes. You can also take it per level if you so wish (so, in your case, you can keep the 5 and 7 but average the 2 and 4.

Olaf - It depends. I have some concerns about the power level of that particular archetype, especially in a 25-pt buy environment.

OrcNextDoor - I will allow them. However, if you want to roll on the table from Blood of Demons, you'll have to roll once in this thread.

So far, I have the following submissions:

  • Scipio (Oracle)- Ammon
  • Garos Blaine (Sorcerer) - DBH
  • Aldous Mor'esti (Wizard/Diviner) - psionichamster
  • Lothan (Ranger) - Javell DeLeon
  • Ravena (Rogue) - Edelsmirge
  • Gillian Flynn (Oracle) - Lady Ladile

Interested (but no character submission quite yet)

  • Jereru
  • The Morphling
  • TheOrcnextdoor
  • Olaf the Holy
  • Talinthal

If I missed you, please let me know! I often get overwhelmed by the amount of information in forum posts and can miss questions.

There's also Gillian here, hehe.

Liberty's Edge

Added! Sorry about that.

Aishe wipes the rain from his brow. Well, I don't have two references, but perhaps I can impress.

He heads to a nearby tavern, any will do, and finds himself a quick table. He produces a scrap of paper, a little rough, and tears it down to size. He quickly writes up a resume of sorts. Finishing quickly he heads back out into he rain and into the Gold Goblin looking for someone to give his resume to.

He sees a group of likely adventurers, still wet and milling around waiting. He walks over and joins them, ”Is this the group applying for the job? How’s it going? Names Aishe Danior - at your service.” he bows lightly and looks around. ”This is a big hall, our employers must be very well off.”

They seem a quiet lot. I wonder if there's any chatterers among them?

My background and crunch can be seen in my alias. Let me know if you'd like me to explain anything, change anything, whatever. :)

I’ve DMed and Played on these boards for a few years now, and I’ve always been an active and supportive poster in every campaign. Please feel free to peruse my aliases and campaigns.

If selected, I can also help with treasure tracking if you like. I have a useful spreadsheet that I use in campaigns I'm in to help track that sort of thing so you don’t have to. You should be able to see a version of it here (link).

Looking to apply with a rogue/fighter character. I will get the crunch up asap, but thought I would add a little fluff for my submission.

What's your balance concerns? If it's damage, then allow me to point out that, like the magus, it mostly derives damage from not intensified shocking grasps, but intensified snowballs. Snowball is from PPC: People of the North, so it wouldn't be available in this game.

If it's something else, ehh. We can probably find a build that you don't consider horrendously scary.

Here's the list of spells I can spellstrike:
0th: Acid Splash, Disrupt Undead, Ray of Frost
1st: Hydraulic Push, Ray of Enfeeblement
2nd: Acid Arrow, Scorching Ray

There are maybe three spells with ranged attack rolls per level from outside sources, but I'd have to request those on an individual basis, so you can just say no.

Here's her sheet.

Cool I hadn't considered rolling on the blood of demons chart, but let's see what I get.

variant ability: 1d100 ⇒ 42

The spell animate dead works as a revive.. hm. I may use it. Not sure.

Ahhhh, the competition!

Aishe smiles at the fresh arrival. "Well, I'm no boss, but I dare say I can match you with my crossbow and locks too! Though I will concede the bow is often the better weapon in the hands of a novice.", he says without guile or meanness.

He looks around for a decent shooting range, but as it's in a respectable business, finds none. He laughs.

"Perhaps when this is over, the two of us can match our skills over a pint? I don't think they'd appreciate us testing our picks against their vault." he suggests.

"Name's Aishe Danior. I am at your service." he bows.

Slothsy - hope it's OK to role play a little. Just trying to get a feel for the character, but I'll stop if you'd rather the thread be kept to submissions.

Ok. So, I've decided to go with the teifling cleric or Sarenrea.

Background summary: Vash had always been looked down on for his heritage. Called a trouble maker even though he had rarely caused any trouble, save a few harmless pranks and kid would Do. His mother had died during his birth, so his father had raised him alone before disappearing, presumably back to elven lands. It was strange, the teiflings father had been an elf, and his mother a human. Perhaps this was why he experienced more than average prejudice In his home town as he was considered an ill omen. Eventually, he started believing what they said and made it a self-fufiling prophecy. He grew angrier at people and lost faith in the world. Until he met the priest of Sarenrea. It was when Vash had been at his darkest, after he had killed a man. It was mostly in self-defense but even Vash couldn't deny he hadn't enjoyed it. He was being charged with murder, however for some reason the priest decided to stand up for Vash. She offered to take him away as a punishment and eventually it was agreed.
The next few years Vash would learn of Sarenrea, how she the priest beleives she had sent her to that town to give someone a second chance. Eventually Vash's dark outlook changed. Instead of seeing the worst of everything thing and falling in despair, he saw the good as well. And would come to fight for that good. He still saw all the bad, that never changed but now he believed that their really was good in most things, and that anyone could change if they just tried.

Personality: cheerful, kind, patient. He sometimes tries to hard to "change" people that likely would never change. He has moments where he waivers in his belief in the goodness of most people but ever since he joined his faith he has never given up until the last possible moment. He firmly believes in second Chances and even third chances as he remembers when he first went with the priest...

You can take half per level, yes. You can also take it per level if you so wish (so, in your case, you can keep the 5 and 7 but average the 2 and 4.

Olaf - It depends. I have some concerns about the power level of that particular archetype, especially in a 25-pt buy environment.

If that's the spell load-out you're going for, that will be fine. I understand the snowball interaction is the way to get it to be the silliest, but I personally know that I do not have the highest level of system mastery and can have a hard time realizing what exactly I'm agreeing to.

Shadow Lodge

Hit Point Rolls: 4d10 ⇒ (7, 2, 8, 2) = 19

I'll take average for level 3 and level 5, then. :) Character will be in tomorrow.

dotting, probably a tiefling vigilant ex assassin

Your second sentence doesn't make sense to me unless you're asking us who are applying to answer.

So in case that's what you're after. :)

I think this AP is well written overall, and so I'm eager to play a character within it. Plus, I read a little of your campaign, and I think this is a pretty good group.

I should add, regarding my character, the future for him is as a Ranger, where he'll pick up some tracking and, eventually, a few spells as well. Should help to round him out a bit.
