Sorry, the multiple threads are dizzying even for a practiced multi tasked scatter brain like me.
Gentlemen, best wishes, inspired moments of genius and calm waters as you set out on this new exciting endeavor!
What is your one most fervent hope for Starfinder?
What is your greatest fear for the same?
Is where did the gods put Golarion the what happened to Aroden of the new setting?
Will there be newly minted gods that succeeded the Test of the Starstone in this era?
Will Thank you for making Cheliax be part of the setting!
Will there be a Tarrasque stand in for Starfinder?
Will Drow get Cloaking Devices on their ships?
Will Harrow Cards be part of the Setting?
Can we expect to see a new Critical Hit and Critical Miss Deck?
Will you ask William Gibson to write ANYTHING for the campaign setting?
Who of you (besides Erik) are fans of Rick and Morty?
Are my current dice compatible with Starfinder?
Do androids dream of electric sheep?
Will Cosmo be blamed for the loss of Golarion?

Dragon78 |

1)Have any of the races had a change in appearance, alignment, or other major change from pathfinder?
2)Will you need special archetypes(or other changes) to play any of the older classes?
3)How common will magic items be?
4)Will technology based devices replace the big 6 in function or will you use the automatic bonuses based on level?
5)How many new classes will there be?

Malwing |

My biggest concerns:
If I already have 3pp sci-fi/sci-fantasy races, classes,(including Psionics) and Technology guide compliant equipment, how likely is it that those materials will be usable for Starfighter RPG as written?
What percentage of the classes will e magical as opposed to the techno magic?
Will any magic, technological or otherwise, be vancian?

In traditional Pathfinder the players can decently expect to scale in personal power to the point where they can fight monstrously sized creatures and be a threat to near deities. Will the scope of Starfinder follow that trend where PCs could individually come to threaten starships? I am not sure if i am for or against that notion actually... but i am very curious.

Let me start by saying we're not joking when we say this project is in its early days, so often we don't definitively know the answers to crucial, burning questions. And if we're not pretty sure, we're not going to risk telling you something that we think there's a good chance will change. (As it is, even things we feel pretty sure about MIGHT change, so please keep that in mind if we get one wrong.)
What is your one most fervent hope for Starfinder?
That it encourages a lot of people to get together, bounce dice, share pizza, and make awesome fun memories. Seriously, that's my passion about all rpgs, this one included.
What is your greatest fear for the same?
That it'll give me burnout. This project is a LOT of work, and the schedule for it doesn't have a lot of wiggle room. I have, a time or two in my career, worked so hard on a game line that I ended up being unable to appreciate the end product. I don't want that to happen here.
Is where did the gods put Golarion the what happened to Aroden of the new setting?
I would personally describe it as more the "Prophecy doesn't work" of Starfinder, but there is no denying that having a central mystery that drives organizations to be interested in exploring every hidden 9and dangerous) corner of the campaign setting can be useful.
Will there be newly minted gods that succeeded the Test of the Starstone in this era?
There will certainly be new gods, but I don't think we're ready to reveal details about them. They may or may not have anything to do with the Starstone.
Will there be a Tarrasque stand in for Starfinder?
WillThank you for making Cheliaxbepart of the setting!
Will Drow get Cloaking Devices on their ships?
Will Harrow Cards be part of the Setting?
Can we expect to see a new Critical Hit and Critical Miss Deck?
Will you ask William Gibson to write ANYTHING for the campaign setting?
Those are certainly details we're not ready to talk about yet.
Who of you (besides Erik) are fans of Rick and Morty?
I am!!
Are my current dice compatible with Starfinder?
Your d4, d6, d8, d10, d12, and d12 are. If you have a d5, d7, d24 and so on (which I do), they likely aren't. No word on the d3 yet.
Do androids dream of electric sheep?
Only some models.
Will Cosmo be blamed for the loss of Golarion?
I'm sure SOMEONE will blame him!

Star Charts?
Will we have star gates?
What about the Force?
Most of those things are the kind of specific details we're not at the stage to discuss yet.
Obviously there won't be the Force itself, since that's IP of Disney/Lucasfilm. But there are a lot of Warriors with Special Powers Different from Other People in scifi overall, and I expect we'd do something with that trope.

Starfinder and the so-called caster/martial disparity?
That sounds like a band name!
Obviously our goal is for all Starfinder classes and core character concepts to have equal ability to contribute to the group and engage in the adventure. Plasma rifles, jetpacks, and powered armor mean we need to think very carefully about what that means.
We (and right now by "we" I mostly mean the PDT) are doing that careful thinking.

Discuss some of the major obstacles to creating organized play for this setting.
Discuss some the new classes and some of the races we're gonna see in the initial core.
Most of those things are the kind of specific details we're not at the stage to discuss yet.
A lot of internal decisions would have to get made before any Org Play could be considered. The PFS team does herculean work as it is, and obviously we couldn't just say "Hey, ALSO support a whole new game." If we had them do less Pathfinder material, that would be counter-productive.
I'm not the expert on this, but I think it's clear how tricky any such effort would be.

Will alignment still be a thing?
1)Have any of the races had a change in appearance, alignment, or other major change from pathfinder?
My biggest concerns
Will there be an update to the technology guide rules to make devices either easier to charge, or to have more charges?
Will the alchemist class get a Starfinder update/equivalent?
How will high tech and magic interact and/or overlap?
There will be Espers/Psionics along Magic and Technology? What about a non-vancian system?

I don't anyone to think I am ignoring them... but most of those things are the kind of specific details we're not at the stage to discuss yet. The questions themselves can be useful, since it encourages us to look at an issue, but until we are much further along we won't have things like this pinned down. And, since the release is more than a year away, even when we know some of these we'll want to consider how we want to preview that information.
So, not being coy at all, I just can't really anything the vast majority of questions with this level of specificity. But I AM paying attention. :)

Is the PDT making Starfinder or is there a separate SDT?
Neither.
The PDT is a crucial part of creating the Starfinder RPG. At this stage most work is being done either by them or by the Starfinder development team (James Sutter, Rob, and myself) or the art department (since we need to visualize an entire universe).
James Sutter has described this as an "all hands on deck" project, and I'd bet nearly everyone will have done a chunk of work on it before we are done. Our exact internal process is both fairly boring, and a bit "inside baseball" to lay out to the public.
But the short form is that the Starfinder Development Group (not an official name) is heavily collaborating with the PDT on the mechanics of this game, and as Starfinder Creative Director, James Sutter will find the best people for each thing that needs to be done, and work with them to make it happen.

Is there going to be a Bestiary section in the CRB, a separate Bestiary book, or are monsters going to be restricted just to AP issues?
There will almost-certainly be at least some monsters in the core rulebook, and some in the AP issues. I don't think we're ready to discuss any other plans, since they could change, morph in form, and so on.

Then to rephrase; how big of a priority is backwards compatibility?
What tropes are coming up in class development talks?
What will the playtest process look like?
How much has the Aethera project influenced this one?
Owen, you've already put out a pseudo d20 modern/pulp yourself, will that design influence your ideas for Starfinder classes? I noticed certain similarities between RGG's Grit and Gunslingers and certain recent options so I had to ask.

It is second only to making starfidner the ebst game system we can for playing Starfinder.

None of that is stuff we're talking about to the best of my knowledge. I mean, Jaems Sutter has mentioned the Soldier, Technomancer, and Solarian as classes, but if we start talking about numerous specific tropes then people want to know if we are handling them through classes, archetypes, backgrounds, special dice with unique symbols, computer programs, or specialty sodas... and we're just not at the point of getting into that.

This, however, I'll address.
My work as publisher, developer, and writer for Rogue Genius Games, and for that matter as developer and writer for Green Ronin, never directly influences my work for Paizo.
Obviously I have a some design aesthetics. Where those aesthetics are appropriate for Paizo products they may cause me to create similar options when facing similar design challenges. Where they differ from how Paizo does thing, I suppress them and do things the Paizo way on Paizo products.
A lot of d20/Pathfinder developers have long backgrounds in the industry, and we're all absorbing some percentage of the same media (including other games). That means there's parallel design sometimes. More than once someone has mentioned they are ":sure" that I designed something as a nod to another product of mine, when in fact the item in question was designed by someone else in the building that hasn't even read that product of mine.
It happens, and all it's a sign of is creative people coming up with similar ideas in the same environment, which isn't really a shock. :)

One thing I keep coming back to is how stat dependency will have to change for Starfinder. d20 and its variants assume melee combat as a baseline - monsters hit you with claws and teeth, you hit them with sword and shield. Future tech turns that assumption on its head. Space fantasy places what would be classed humanoids squarely in the driver's seat as far as opponents go, and both sides spend way more time shooting at each other than stabbing one another. Melee combat obviously does happen, but in the words of one who has seen things from one side of the galaxy to another, "ancient weapons are no match for a good blaster at your side."
The SF design has to approach combat from the starting assumption that fights will be at range. We need more focus on how cover works, how much damage ranged weapons should do, and how semi-auto and full-auto weapons will change how many attacks a typical combatant is likely to get. Right now, the semi-auto feature on some blasters in the Tech Manual gives you a free Rapid Shot, and then another additional shot if you have Rapid Shot. If we assume baseline blasters will be priced at costs that make them feasible for beginning level characters (which seems really necessary), we're looking at potentially 3 ranged touch attacks, all made at the highest Dex bonus a PC can manage, because it benefits both attack bonus and touch AC.
I know there's not really a question in all that, I was just wondering if you, Owen, or any others of the fine Paizo team had any thoughts about it.

In that case:
My Starfinder Requests
- Alignment is no longer a game mechanic. So its like 5e where yes you still have an alignment, but you don't have a ray gun of smite evil,
- Flumphs be in the core book. Artwork of the signature engineer repairing something while a flumph is handing him/her a tool, improved familiar, playable race, whatever. Just as long as they are there.
- Ships/vehicles have levels or some other balancing mechanic other than cost. When I was making vehicles for Pathfinder after Ultimate Combat came out, I found it REALLY difficult to even suggest that X vehicle be at a certain level. I suggest something like the eidolon build where you have the base form and then, as the group goes up in level, you add on extra stuff, like shields, more powerful lasers, improved sensors, smuggling compartments, etc. Done like this, a ship can go from levels 1-20 with the characters.
- A ways to play R2-D2/BB-8. This one is a stretch or probably better for a Starfinder Compatible supplement, but I am throwing it out there.

Are you looking to continue the trend of set capabilities as classes or more of a freeform "choose X skills as class, choose either No Magic, 1/2 Magic, 1/3 Magic or 1/4 Magic and take accompanying BAB progression"?
Assuming you are looking at set classes, will you be including a few Archetypes in the core book?
How civilized do you want the Golarion system to be (was the star system ever named?) in so far as having adventures in system with lots of combat vs having to leave a peaceful system to find more dangerous areas to play?
Is the Star Ocean series one of the influences for your Science-Fantasy? (its one of the only franchise i can think of that mixes space-tech and magic together)
Do you have a recommended reading/watching list to help people get into the space-magic groove?

This one may be one of the "too early" questions
I've seen comments (primarily on other boards) about Psionics, as that tends to go with Science Fiction - being the way you influence the world without physical action in that genre. Not speaking of any specific mechanical system here, just the normal SF concept.
With magic existing, would "psionics" be unneeded (as a separate entity) as magic would sort of fill that niche in storytelling/game design?
