Solo Game- Interest Check

Recruitment

This post may be a bit lengthy but bear with me

I have a bit of a problem. I am GMing 4 Solo PBP games on these forums. I have found them extremely rewarding and very, very fun to run. They are as follows...

Among the Remains: A murder mystery game where the PC travels from city to city with each level to solve a different crime. Been running that one since September.

In the Lion's Shadow: A criminal game where the PC is trying to build a criminal empire in Cassomir. He is actually leveling via wealth in that game so a very different, very mercenary game type . And yes, in that one I had a player vanish and had to start over....

Out of Darkness: A colonization/settlement game where the PC is trying to help a small Chelish penal colony in the Darklands grow into a full fledged underground city (or at least that is the idea!). This one has a much heavier dose of action and combat!

The Acquisitions Department: Just started this one. A Mwangi wizard collects magical artifacts from all over the world for the Magaambya school of magic. Every item is in a different location and he levels every time he succeeds. Should be very fun.

Oh and a game temporarily on hold...

Soaring Ambition: A game were the PC is trying to climb the complicated political ladder of Almas, capital of Andoran. Dealing with Councilors, laws, votes and other political matters. That one is great fun and can't wait to re-start that one in April (Player had some life issues).

So here is my problem. I am running these very fun, sandbox-y solo games and enjoying it. However, I'd also like to play in one of these open worlds, interacting with NPCs, exploring strange places and doing big things all by myself. I have found that the solo setup really, really works in PBP and wish to take advantage of it as a player.

So I propose this.

I will GM a custom solo PBP game for you. Anything you want, set anywhere at all. Want to be a Kyonin elf who patrols the Tanglebriar? Sure. A Whispring Way initiate who wants to rise the ranks and free the Whispering Tyrant? Awesome. A Rhandoum merchant looking to spread the Laws of Man? Go for it. A Chelish noble plotting the downfall of the House of Thrune? Perfect. A PC who wants to become a Red Mantis Assassin and go out on jobs throughout Avistan? We can do that.

Anything at all, I'm willing to try. As you can see above (feel free to glance through those games) I'm willing to try different types of games and unusual goals. No need to be a standard adventurer saving damsels in distress (if you don't want to).

In exchange, I'd like you to run a Solo PBP game for me. What that game is will rely on your experience/your knowledge of the lore/personality. I'd love to play one in the Shackles but I am be persuaded otherwise...

But that is the deal. I am an experienced (well-liked) GM who is willing to make a custom campaign for you, wherever and with whoever you want and in exchange I get a game to play in myself (finally!)

Interested?

Any questions, comments, thoughts feel free to ask. I'll be watching this thread closely!

I'm fairly new to RPG and have never GM'd but this might be a decent opportunity to learn, if you're willing to take a chance on rookie and
don't get offers from experienced GMs.

I'm big on background and maps and would base things for you on details from the Inner Sea World Guide.

I'm not too bothered about having a solo game myself. I'd be happy to just run a solo game for you. That said, there are loads of things in Pathfinder I'd like to get experience playing: particularly, exotic races and classes.

Also, it might be interesting to play a kind of 'learn to GM' game where my character plays a 'magician's apprentice' to the GM's NPC master mage and they conjure and bind spectral NPCs to learn the rules and strategies of play.

I'd love to take you up on your offer, but I just don't think I have enough experience. That said, what WOULD you like to play if you had your choice? You say the shackles but that could end up in a lot of ways.

I looked for something like this just last week. As with mderm (above), I have very little experience. Initially, I was looking for something that I could use to try and play through email with a real life buddy. But there just aren't any adventures that seem to be pre-made for one player character.

I don't have enough experience to solo GM for you, although when I do, I would definitely do this. Your is is dead on the mark!

In a perfect world? Assuming I get everything I want?

A character whose goal is to become 'King of the Shackles' and forge a new order, with him at the top. Scheming and power plays with the rules on all these petty islands, dealing with cannibals, other captains (with varying plans and motivations), even embracing varied religions (Deluged God anyone?) to gain an edge. Using sleight of hand, tricks of the eye and cleverness to create this new order.

That is in a perfect world though.

I'm sorry you don't have the time on hand.

Time I have plenty of. Experience to where I would feel comfortable creating a solo game that's not going to auto-kill you, that's a different matter.

One player modules. There aren't many, but they do exist. Although there probably aren't many/any games on the forums using them.

Yeah, solo games aren't very popular. I mean, I understand why but it is a shame, because they can work so well.

I want to play a gnome enchanter sorcerer whose goal is to mate with every humanoid species to write a memoir called "Orcs and Gnomes Do It Too"

I don't think Mosque is interested in running your porn fantasy.

Hmm, this seems like an offer too good to refuse.
I would love to collaborate with you, I've been meaning to join a 1-on-1 game, and this way, I get two on both ends of the spectrum.
My character would be Norio Sugita, wandering samurai from the tian regions working as a sellsword wherever you may need him.
As for your campaign, I actually do have some ideas for the Shackles, the matter is in your hands, however, what genre you would like. I like to branch out and use unusual ideas for unusual characters. If chosen, I look forward to collaborating with you on both games.

Out of curiosity, what is it you like about solo games? Since I've seen a couple pop up here and there, I've been thinking about whether or not it's something I'd want to apply for. Thus far, I think how well it would go would depend largely on the player and DM. I think for me personally, I might have trouble properly driving the action and story forward without other players to help me.

Hey, I figured this thread was a good place for this:

Basically, I'm converting Dragon Age: Origins to pathfinder in order to play with a long-distance friend whose computer isn't up to date enough to run the game, and whom I want to spend some time doing stuff with. I figured this was a good way to include him in the awesomeness that is dragon age, and shoot the s&$! along the way.

That means I can run a solo game as a pbp here too, preferably for someone who hasn't played DA:O. So if that's you, and this seem interesting, there you go! I wouldn't require a solo game in return. You don't need to be particularly experienced with pathfinder.

It would not always be a true solo game, as certain NPCs will attempt to ingrate themselves with your quest, but if you really wanted to hack it alone, that'd be an option. No-one says you have to follow the lain-out tracks, that's the beauty of an RPG.

I've found a bunch of variant rules that lend themselves well to telling this story, but if you just want to use regular pathfinder, that's fine. The only variant I'll insist on is using 'Epic 8', which is basically a level cap at 8th level. My reasoning for doing this is to keep the story relatively low magic; long-distance teleportation and ressurection would throw a wrench in the works.

That, and the only allowed races are elves, humans and dwarves.

The Exchange

Curious what the criteria would be if there were multiple folks interested in this....I would potentially be interested too, though I think I have some questions about what level of resources you would desire from your GM like maps and what not...

Interested, a few questions from me as well.

Posting frequency? I work retail, and have no set hours. Perfect world, would be 1/day but it may be as long as 2 days before I get a post up.

I do not know much about the Shackles canon or history. I don't mind reading up on it, but would that be an issue?

What power range would you prefer? 15 point buy for a little harder, grittier game or a 20/25 point buy to be a little hardier since its a solo game?

Would you be opposed to a "simpler" game by restricting the playable races to core, but allowing classes to be fairly open to Paizo published (save summoner as I feel they are OP)? I feel U-Summoner is okay though?

I can think of a few things I could put you through in the Shackles, including both combat/non-combat. Do you prefer to play via fast track XP, or "level as it feels right"?

First off, I'd like to thank everyone for the response. Hopefully, with more threads like this we can build a real solo game niche of players on this site. Start a real community (if small and fluid). That would be a hope anyway.

I have decided to go with mderm. He is new but I think this is a good 'training wheels' scenario as well as we seem to have a good deal in common (we have talked via PM).

Again, thank you to everyone else and I will stay in touch!

I'm late on the draw, and new to everything on these boards, but I thought I'd drop a message in here for the sake of it.

I've played a number of home/hobby store games over the course of the years, but never had any idea of a "play-by-post" game until I saw it mentioned elsewhere as part of a rules question I looked up.

Clearly I'm new to PbP, but after browsing through most of the recruitment threads on the first page here, a 1-on-1 style almost seems to be the way to get started. I've played (or read) a lot of the modules/APs published, and, at least right now, homebrew games are either few and far between, or full of a level of ridiculousness (Tristalt-Mythic-Extras? No offense anyone) that's beyond what I'd like to do.

So while this particular recruitment might be closed, in the interest of building a "solo game niche of players," I'll pop myself in and express my desire for this sort of thing.

Good luck on what you have running!

We don't call it porn if it's classy. It's adult erotica. And relax, I'm just joking.

As was I. Besides. I could have been wrong.
