Yes, all questions. Any questions. (So long as they won't get this thread locked) Those questions about game development you were going to ask James Jacobs? Send them over here.

Ideas for question topics if you're stumped:

  • Migration Period / Viking Age stuff. I've been obsessed with this general time period for like 5 years and have mentally collected a haphazard amount of random information. Although I warn that I don't actually have a degree in this and I definitely don't know everything.
  • The gayest adaptation of Bēowulf ever. A free graphic novel project that I've been wanting to do for years. It's fun. I love talking about it.
  • Being a gay nonbinary transgender person, what that's like bladdabla. Note that I can only speak for myself, not for everyone.
  • Worshipping Thor, being a Norse heathen I guess. Again, I can only speak for myself and not everyone.
  • Maybe you can ask me some stuff about human evolution and historical genetics too, so long as it's not too technical. That is what my major is supposed to be about, anyway.
  • Cats. I've lived with cats all my life. Ask me questions about cats. I love cats. Tell me about your cats too. I love to hear about everyones cats. I want to hug every cat. But I can't hug every cat, so I'll just make do with hugging as many cats as reasonably possible.
  • Sun's Garden, my campaign setting written for the pathfinder rules where expansionist imperial Elves enslave the other core races. If you ask me questions about what the world's like that will help me develop it.
  • Being a first generation Polish-American citizen in Connecticut and living with a language barrier between me and the rest of my family most of my life. Thanks, language attrition.
  • Don't feel limited to these topics, of course. You can ask me anything you like.

I fully admit deciding to make one of these just because I noticed there was a growing collection of these in off-topic, and because I love exploiting any opportunity to egotistically flaunt my polarizing Viking-themed internet personality.

What's up with the name, you might've said elsewhere, but I tune in and out so I think I missed it :-)

Good question!

Well, the name on my birth certificate was no good (due to being trans and no longer identifying with that name) so I picked a different one. Aniuś is a Polish diminutive form of Ania, a feminine name, with -uś, a grammatically masculine diminutive ending. It is also an actual Polish name so it works that way also.

I only identify rather weakly with the surname on my birth certificate, didn't identify with the surname from the other side of the family either, also and don't want to use a patronym, so I opted for an epithet. I asked a friend to give me an epithet, and he said "the Wise". Now that doesn't flow very well in Anglo-Saxon ("Aniuś Wīs") so I appended 'tale' and made it a kenning. (Aniuś Taluwīs) Tale-wise refers to my wisdom in tales, my role as a storyteller.

And that's the handle that I use online, and the name I generally go by.

EDIT: TLDR Aniuś is my actual name. Talewise is an epithet that I just use when people need a surname and don't need my actual surname.

A little bias is healthy ;)

Also it was a good excuse for me to make that reference.

Nope! My vision without my glasses is garbage. Those things are tiny and seethrough.

Also I have a strict anti-decomposing corpses policy here. The things tend to invite flesh-eating bacteria.

You mentioned "language attrition". By which I assume that the older members of your family didn't teach you Polish, and possibly don't speak English too well.

I name you a wimp and a crybaby. :-) Let me tell you about language attrition. I am 50% Italian, 25% Ukranian, and the remaining 25% somehow split between English and French, all of that by blood. I can also claim Hungarian as a result of my mother having been adopted. English is the only language that was used in my home as I grew up. Though I had it easy as a second generation (mostly) immigrant in that by the time I came on the scene my parents and those of my grandparents who were still around spoke English well. So, if you want to talk about language attrition I would claim that having lost out on Italian, Ukranian, French and Hungarian I had it worse. ;-)

On my Dad's side of the family, his mother got off the boat from the Ukraine sometime after WWI. Dad's Mom married an American citizen (English and French by blood) whose family had been in America for several generations. Unfortunately my paternal grandfather was a louse who deserted the family when my Dad was a young boy. So my Dad was mostly raised by his mother and other members of her extended family. To bring a long story to a close, the family decided that they were American now so they did not teach Dad Ukranian even though they used it among themselves. Dad didn't mind that too much, but one of the things he complained about was that if he happened to come into or near an area where they happened to be conversing in Ukranian they would start whispering. Dad would complain, "You know I can't speak the language, why are you whispering?"

I can't tell if you're serious. To cover my bases, I'll just link some Dilbert comics.

Incidentally, English is technically not my first language. When I was a baby I was raised in the Polish language. Apparently I could speak Polish as well as any toddler. Then I started going to school at 5 years old (an English-speaking American school of course) and I think it took a year or two for language attrition to take my language away.

My dad and grandma (on my mothers side) spoke generally in Polish (but tried to speak English even though he was not good at it), and my mom spoke usually in English and was fluent. I guess that, combined with an english speaking school, wasn't enough to maintain an active bilingualism.

So I actually *had* Polish as a language and spoke it, but lost it by the time I was seven! Alas.

EDIT: By the way, language attrition is defined as speaking a language, but then losing ability to speak that language, or at least part of it. So it doesn't apply to languages that you never spoke in the first place.

Otherwise, I could lament my loss of: Old Polish, Proto-West-Slavic, Proto-Slavic, Proto-Balto-Slavic, Some Baltic East Prussian languages, Proto-Baltic, Ukrainian, Proto-East-Slavic, Proto-North-Germanic, Old Norse, Yiddish, Hebrew, Proto-Semitic, Proto-Afro-Asiatic, Proto-(East)-Germanic (as spoken by the Przeworsk and Wielbark cultures, and the Chernyakov culture too why not), Proto-Germanic, Proto-Indo-European, a Proto-Satem language if that existed, a Proto-Centum language if that existed also, Proto-Celtic, some languages from language families existing in East Europe before the Indo-European family (maybe a language from the long lost Basque family? who knows!), the list goes on.

And that's not to count any of the languages associated with the possible ancestries I could have outside of East Europe.

My b%@$@~#& detector Sense Motive says the story is as true as Ceaser Slaad knows, it just doesn't seem like a case of language attrition if I'm understanding the story correctly.

Altho I do love those Dilbert comics.

I was under the impression that the use of emoticons would have provided a clue. But then an "analysis" by Kobold Cleaver is in view. :-)

However, if I were to adopt Anius' definition of language attrition then I am still a fellow sufferer. I studied German back when I was in high school, but after not having used it for decades I couldn't do anything with it now.

Yeah it can be hard to tell jokes from seriousness on the internet sometimes.

And yep! That sounds like the very definition of second-language attrition.

Language attrition of any kind is a shame. I wish it didn't happen, so we could all be speaking more languages.

What with the Internet and all, I don't even read books any more.

Irontruth wrote:

There are books, journal articles, etc, on the internet, that I read.

Unfortunately my terrible ADHD makes it very difficult for me to actually stick to reading something a lot of times.

I've discovered that I can sort of brute force hyperfocus, but I need to find a more efficient way than that.

Also, you should check this game out. It's a game about killing gods. The default setting is "mythic norden" a not-quite-but-almost pre-Christian Scandinavian setting. It's not terribly accurate, or intended to be accurate.

I ran several sessions at GenCon this year. Typically I have the players face off against Odin. This time Odin was a former mythender who was a woman, so it was the All-mother that they had to face.

What is the name of the cow who licked the first Jotun (Yimmir?)out of the ice block in Norse creation? I think there is some kind of joke related to this for the sacred cow thread...

Sorry if there are several errors in my question.

I think the cow's name was Auðumbla, but I cant remember how to spell it for the life for me.

Wait, I got it right!

Incidentally, in my Eotenhām setting (which is not to be taken as the historical myths, rather an interpretation of them into a legendarium), Auðumbla and Ymir are the same person. The cow is a part of his spirit and is a manifestation of his own fertility. So he was basically suckled on his own fertility lol.

And yeah the first giant's name was Ymir. He had his kids all by himself with no partner! c:

Also what a great arts. I don't get people's fixations on horns though like can't we just start drawing proper spangenhelms and move on

whoa thats some weird s$%*

"My dice wept tears of blood." If it weren't for the fact that I have duties to my pathfinder players I'd be sold

All gods are ergi so the Allfather being at times also an Allmother is not out of the question.

Today I revisited an artwork of mine that hadn't been worked on in months

Check it out

This depicts Bēowulf in the foreground, with Ides Aglæcwyf, Grendel's Mother, in the background. Bēowulf carries a spindle and a distaff, implements in the powerful effeminate magic sīdsa (ON. seiðr). I may redraw the distaff. Ides carries a sword which she is drawing out of its scabbard. Bēowulf wears jingling copper bells at the end of his braid dedicated to Frēa (ON. Freyr).

I've started considering it since I came to this forum!

I intend to read up on the matter and play as a PC in some pbp games and then try my hand at GMing pbp after I have gotten a few roll20 sessions of Sun's Garden with my friends under my belt.

This isn't an insult, merely a clarification question - you said you're gay and nonbinary transgendered.

As I understand it, gay means attracted exclusively to one's own gender...If it were nonexclusive it would be bi...or omni, or whatnot.

So...that means you identify as neither male nor female, and are only attracted to people who also...straddle the line?

I use gay in a more general way for myself. when I'm attracted to man, it's gay, when i'm attracted to a woman, it's gay, when i'm attracted to a nonbinary person, it's gay.

Technically it makes me bi/pansexual, but for some reason I find 'gay' a less specific term and easier to identify with. I think because my attraction to people is not actually defined by the fact that I'm attracted to all genders. The words bi/pansexual also imply a sort of culture that I don't really feel a part of, while on the other hand I do feel kind of a part of gayness, like I could describe everything about myself and how I act as gay.

It's complicated.

    lucky7 wrote:

So much better than not having a cat. c:

But seriously the cat is a family member and a central part of your life, and having a good relationship with a cat is incredibly rewarding. You make the cat feel safe and happy, while the cat gives you companionship and comfort. Whenever I was upset my cats would come to my side. One cat I had (he has been dead for 6 years), he would actually tap me on the shoulder to ask for pets, in a very humanlike way. It was precious.

Our younger cat is extremely energetic and needs to play constantly. Since my mom was always at work and I was always at school, he didn't get enough time with us and would wreck havoc, running all over the place, knocking stuff off of shelves. Now that he has a safe yard to run around and play in in California, he is apparently a lot less obnoxious.

Cleaning the litterbox of a healthy cat isn't nearly as much of an inconvenience as you might think. GROSS AHEAD: It's cleaning up diarrhea that is horrible, and also older cats tend to pee a lot more, and this can soak to the bottom of the litterbox, making it harder and gross to clean.

I've got some trivia questions for you. I know that there were 9 Valkyries and one of them was named Brunhilda. Would you perchance know the names of the other 8 Valkyries, or where I could find that information? Also, if a Valkyrie were to use a last/family name, what would it be? Based on my limited knowledge of such things I am tempted to think it might be Wotansdotter or Odinsdotter, but those violate the naming conventions as I understand them.
