What do you mean, sanitation? They don't even have SOAP!
What kind of an awful society doesn't even have soap? Dear gods.
Why use soap when you could get rubbed down with oil by a professional oil-rubber, then have it scraped off with a scraper?
Also, the Romans used soap, just not to clean their bodies (they used it to wash their clothes). There was even a soap factory in Pompeii.

Ah, you must have gotten there some time after AD 500, then...
And when my business there was over I was already starting to have a sickness in my stomach that plagued me for a week.
I know, you rural types always get the diseases that city folk have built up an immunity to.
