Let's Build Prince Oberyn

Advice

Everyone knows HBO's depiction of Oberyn Martell from A Song of Ice and Fire). What class would he be? What feats does he have? What the heck is he holding?!

The best way to do it would be to begin writing feats such as Mobility and Dazzling Display on a character sheet.

Then, I walk up and savagely crumple the sheet into an unrecognizable ball of horror while your significant other shrieks desolately in the background.

Done.

Liberty's Edge

There've been discussions about this before.

Short version:

Swashbuckler is probably your class of choice (or Daring Champion Cavalier). Possibly with a two-level dip in Ninja for Ki-pool and Poison Use. Uses Lunge, Spring Attack, Parry, and Dodging Panache to be basically untouchable in most cases and gradually pick foes to death with a poisoned weapon.

Falls apart completely when grappled, or when caught off guard and unable to use preferred tactics, but that's thematically accurate.

Look through this.

With Pathfinder Unchained a Unchained Rogue with Finesse Training in the Elven Branched Spear works nicely.

Linkied!

This is true to some degree. I'd still advocate a more martial class for his levels beyond 3, but 3 levels of Unchaine Rogue (Poisoner) is a solid choice.

Imbicatus stole my thunder.

True, but pure Rogue explains how he was so easily killed in a grapple though. ;)

The Mountain being a Barbarian, and possibly of Large Size, explains that pretty well all on its own...

Would you call it grapple? I'd say it's more like Savage Dirty Trick.

Grand Lodge

In the books he is called the Viper because he poisoned all his spear tips. The mountain died a few days later in horrible agony. All the viper needs to do is hit you once....But Poison sucks in PF so I will go with:

You would definitely be a spring attack guy. As well as combat reflexes. I personally don't like Dazzling Display as I prefer to use my turn doing something more useful...like damage.

I believe a slayer or a Vivisectionist Alchemist with spears would work perfectly. If your wanting to stick to the Character you will still attempt to use poison...remember they can always roll low...That is my Mantra when I play spellcasters.

Perhaps the feinting Line might be useful...catch them flatfooted and pop them with sneak attack damage.

But you should at least read the books or research what the books say about him and his actions. The show has started really deviating from the book as to help with people who spoil it and also cause Hollywood butchers everything with what they deem "creative improvements".

Oberyn Martell was 40 years old when he was fighting Ser Gregor Clegane (who was 33 at the time).

So for an accurate depiction of Oberyn you have to consider his age. And he studied to become a Maester equivalent to an Alchemist or a Wizard, perhaps use the Unchained multi-classing rules.

Oberyn would be a slayer I think.

Half-Elf with Thinblood Resilience, Phalanx Fighter 3, Daring Champion/Sashbuckler 2, and Prestige into Daggermark Poisoner.

Liberty's Edge

Swashbuckler.
Parry & Riposte - dodge attacks and counter them.

A 5~6th levl Slayer focused on fighting with a bardiche or lonspear should work...

The Mountain is probably a Barbarian/Fighter multiclass... Probably at lower level but with a far greater Str score.

No love for Mobile Fighter?

Like most characters, multiple builds are possible to represent him.

Yeah given access to third party I'd probably make him a Myrmidon Mobile Fighter.

Myrmidon is from PoW:E, currently still in playtesting. But trades out about half your fighter bonus feats (and thus is compatible with most other archetypes, like Mobile Fighter) to gain 6th level maneuver progression and Grit.

For the maneuvers, focus on Steel Serpent (poison use and ability score damage, plus general debuffing/bleed damage) and Piercing Thunder (polearm discipline with a focus on charging and acrobatics, and an associated style feat to make polearms finessible). Maybe with one or two maneuvers cherry picked from Scarlet Throne (mobility/duelist type discipline).

Liberty's Edge

Lvl 8 Scout rogue. Dodge. Mobility. Spring attack. Offensive Defense. Slow reactions. Poisoner archetype.
