Here you go. Now you and your GM have to invent and argue about what the effects of this item will be every time it is used. Have fun.

Rambling from a small press co-owner:
On the other hand as a small publisher I'll tell you about some of the types I run across often.

1) The Talker- this designer has great ideas and pitches but never puts a darn thing to paper. Sometimes I get fooled and have my time wasted with a talker, talkers can't meet deadlines.

2) Talented but Lazy- this designer is almost worth it. They have rule of cool in spades and you want their work sooo bad, but they have a nasty habit of submitting underdeveloped drafts that take way too much effort to edit. Talented but Lazy tends to walk away after awhile.

3) Gonzo- always comes in with something original. This is a good thing if you're looking for side projects but bad when you're building around a theme. Gonzo usually doesn't play well with others.

4) The Mechanic- this designer colors strictly in the lines but they write well and get templates perfect. They usually completely lack mojo. You end up saying things like, "that was very functional."

5) The Egoist- this person has talent and can do some solid formatting. The problem with the egoist is they don't deal well with criticism, they either fall apart in depression or rage out. You end up handling them more often then you'd like.

6) Dr McAwesomesauce- this is that designer in your stable that occasionally makes you jealous. This is what Paizo is looking for.

I have had to deal with all 6 types and can adapt to any but 1. I like to think I'm a 6 but occasionally I fall into 3 or 5. Mechanics are actually very useful if they can take ideas from Gonzo's and bring them into the realm of reasonable. With a little work anyone can turn into a #6 (though Mechanics have the hardest time.)

Wait...make it a dart that can function as a pen...adjust the weapon qualities to factor it being a missile weapon...crap, I think I just came up with an idea better than what I submitted.

At first, all caps names were annoying...

But somehow they are causing my brain to start some 80's power metal song when I read it.

I still generally downvote them but they've gone from annoying to amusing.

I am terrified that I am the mechanic. Not because everything has to fit perfectly, but because everything has to make make sense, with absolute clarity. I'm worried that I fine tune things to the point that I lose sight of what made them exciting to begin with.

How I managed to keep focused on the detailed mechanics of one class for over a year still boggles my mind.

That sounds a little harsh. If an author can only use existing spells and not create original magical effects, how then is a magic item to avoid being a SiaC?

I was that guy for over a decade. I started at least 4-5 novels before I found my way. I'd also occasionally do poetry for small presses (back before the internet killed them all.)

Superstar is what got me motivated to get into game design, Kobold press gave me my first real shot. I'm not exactly rolling in game design money but I find the work a joy compared to my day job.

That's the superstar bit. Take existing spells/rules and break them a bit in a conceivable way to make a mojo filled item that's cinematic.

If you HAVE to invent a new spell to do this, unless the rules specifically allow you too, then you probably aren't superstarring it.

The best way to get out of being a mechanic is to join a writing circle. Especially if you can get in with a group of gonzos and lazy but talenteds, those types benefit the mechanic best and the mechanic has good habits that sometimes helps the other 2.

It may be harsh, but it's the rules. If a publisher asked you for something, and you gave them something else they didn't ask for, they'll give you disapproving frowny-faces at best.

There are ways to use existing spells and not create Spell-in-a-Can, as accentuated by many of the other entries.

Don't get me wrong, I still upvoted it because the other entry's template use was abysmally non-existent.

The hard part about this round is to create something new and exciting using existing parts.

Also I would bet good money that there are few (<5) to no items in any Pathfinder book that introduce new feats or spells as part of the item.
