I understand everyone works very hard and I hold them in the light and support them and wish every person well.

But...

But.

Rage of a Formatting Junkie:

BUT FOR THE LOVE OF GOD, WHY CAN YOU NOT JUST COPY-PASTE THE TEMPLATE PROVIDED AND USE IT?!?!?!?!?!?

ALSO:

Pedantry:

I just for some reason feel like copy-pasting this bit from the PRD here for some reason, and adding emphasis to one particular part for some reason:

PRD wrote:
Rods are scepter-like devices that have unique magical powers and do not usually have charges.

Yes, I know, "usually." But still.

Patterns seen that are similar to prior years...

- "... prized by..."
- "... appears ordinary but [foo] reveals its true nature..."*
- General unnecessary gore.
- Things that harm you as much as, if not more than, they help.

* Total admission: I really had to resist putting a similar description on my item even though I knew it was cliched because reasons.

Newer patterns that I am already seeing...

- Mirror-like, mirror themed, and "polished to a mirror shine..." items. I really haven't voted that much yet and I've already seen a bunch, across several item categories. And I just typed this sentence, then looked at my next pair, and lo and behold one was described as mirror-like...
- Shadow themes
- Several things that can be thrown (not all of them weapons)
- Rings in sets or pairs

General observations:

Repurposed wondrous items were usually turned into rods or rings, not always to good effect.

Although this was also clear beforehand, rods definitely appear to be the least easy to grasp magic item concept (I've seen one rod that should have been TOTALLY something else that is entirely unlike a rod, and for the interests of vagary I can't really get more specific than that).

Okay, all done.

Edited because I formatted my "rage of a formatting junkie" wrong.

Two items in the exact same design space as mine, and one of them does nearly the same thing as mine but in 80 fewer words.

How can anyone not know there's already a magic item with that name? That's like not knowing there was a basketball player named Michael Jordan.

The One Ring? Stormbringer? Greyswandir? Werewindle? Ghost Wheel?

Let me put it this way...

Oh no, DQ, it's Muphry.

Star Voter Season 8

Between the two items, I had to vote for one I don't really like because the other one was just too far out there.

Is this common?

You were a nice, clean, flavorful little item...and then you had to add that one extra sentence and ruin it.

But I'll still vote for you.

I already fixed it and mocked myself for it perfectly, now you ruined it.

Now that's a weird coincidence. This pair of items have only a one word difference in their names.

O know, DW, its Murphy.
I didn't make any mistakes, and you made so many in way fewer words.

Every time I read "...believed to have been forged from a unicorn horn in the eye of a hurricane on the night of the full moon" (or whatever) I think: I don't believe that. I believe my 10th level wizard can make it in the comfort of his own home whenever he has some downtime.

I'd pay four times as much for that.

I don't care about the adventuring career of Fildergobb the Feckless. Just tell me what the item does already.

So far I've seen...
... about 40 different items, of which...
... I threw 8 into notepad to keep to use, of which...
... 2 got me excited about the idea of using them, of which...
... 1 actually prompted me to say "Oh, hell yeah!" out loud.

When gauging my own reaction to my own item, it's in the 8/40 tier. So I'm pretty certain I won't make final 32, but I feel pretty accomplished and can't wait for the critique threads.

Along with wind/weather items, I think we can safely add leaf/tree items to the trend list.

I see quite a number of wounding weapons.

Ok, I like bleed effects too. I wouldn't write blood maiden for Wayfinder #9 otherwise.

Ugh. Don't describe properties of the weapon's off-the shelf material or magic weapon properties that are described in the core rulebook...

Daaang! I thought it would at least take a few days to get updated, or not be updated until after the competition. Wonder how long it'll take me to have something showing...

Here's a weird trend: Using flavor-style text to describe already established rules mechanics.

Example (not from an actual item): "This greataxe has its head forged of adamantine, a supernaturally hard metal that slices through most other materials, even other metals, with ease, allowing it to bypass hardness of less than 20."

Why would you do this? The rules for adamantine are established in the rulebook. You don't need to waste word count restating what the properties of the material are. Just say it's a +2 keen adamantine greataxe and then get to the stuff that makes it Superstar.

Oooo... Second ordinarily looking item in which case looking ordinarily makes sense... In fact even more than the first one...

EDIT: Actually it was posted opposite another mundane-looking that made sense.

Seen some very interesting items--one that helped me understand the rod design space better than I had.

There should be a rule about messing with the action economy. That is the real hard mode.

Named item versus named item.

Seriously, the Paizo server is doing this deliberately. I think that Gary should remove its memory banks and wipe them clean...

I've seen it on at least three items so far, hence why I called it a trend.

I understand the reasons why this format is used. I'm just getting really frustrated that I can't uprate both or downrate both items. In one pairing I vote for the one with the least mistakes, then two really good items show up and I pick the better one. So I have upvoted something I hate and downvoted something I like, with no way to express my feelings because anonymity.

My party's bard would like this item.

RPG Superstar 2014 Top 16 , Star Voter Season 6, Star Voter Season 8

Are we supposed to report wondrous items that we encounter? I don't want to because it feels unsportsmanlike, but I keep seeing them and it's somewhat disruptive to the voting process... :/

It can be frustrating, but you're doing exactly as required. Each vote is only between the two items on the screen. All the rest do not exist for purposes of that particular vote. It's just a point of determining which of the two items is better. I find it helps me pay attention to the minutia, especially when two items appear equally good or bad.

If they are explicitly wondrous items (I saw two of those) don't feel bad about reporting them - they failed to adhere to rules and will be disqualified anyway.
