I understand everyone works very hard and I hold them in the light and support them and wish every person well.
But...
But.
BUT FOR THE LOVE OF GOD, WHY CAN YOU NOT JUST COPY-PASTE THE TEMPLATE PROVIDED AND USE IT?!?!?!?!?!?
ALSO:
I just for some reason feel like copy-pasting this bit from the PRD here for some reason, and adding emphasis to one particular part for some reason:
Rods are scepter-like devices that have unique magical powers and do not usually have charges.
Yes, I know, "usually." But still.
Patterns seen that are similar to prior years...
- "... prized by..."
- "... appears ordinary but [foo] reveals its true nature..."*
- General unnecessary gore.
- Things that harm you as much as, if not more than, they help.
* Total admission: I really had to resist putting a similar description on my item even though I knew it was cliched because reasons.
Newer patterns that I am already seeing...
- Mirror-like, mirror themed, and "polished to a mirror shine..." items. I really haven't voted that much yet and I've already seen a bunch, across several item categories. And I just typed this sentence, then looked at my next pair, and lo and behold one was described as mirror-like...
- Shadow themes
- Several things that can be thrown (not all of them weapons)
- Rings in sets or pairs
General observations:
Repurposed wondrous items were usually turned into rods or rings, not always to good effect.
Although this was also clear beforehand, rods definitely appear to be the least easy to grasp magic item concept (I've seen one rod that should have been TOTALLY something else that is entirely unlike a rod, and for the interests of vagary I can't really get more specific than that).
Okay, all done.
Edited because I formatted my "rage of a formatting junkie" wrong.

Every time I read "...believed to have been forged from a unicorn horn in the eye of a hurricane on the night of the full moon" (or whatever) I think: I don't believe that. I believe my 10th level wizard can make it in the comfort of his own home whenever he has some downtime.
Meh, your wizard needs to get out more!

So far I've seen...
... about 40 different items, of which...
... I threw 8 into notepad to keep to use, of which...
... 2 got me excited about the idea of using them, of which...
... 1 actually prompted me to say "Oh, hell yeah!" out loud.
When gauging my own reaction to my own item, it's in the 8/40 tier. So I'm pretty certain I won't make final 32, but I feel pretty accomplished and can't wait for the critique threads.

Here's a weird trend: Using flavor-style text to describe already established rules mechanics.
Example (not from an actual item): "This greataxe has its head forged of adamantine, a supernaturally hard metal that slices through most other materials, even other metals, with ease, allowing it to bypass hardness of less than 20."
Why would you do this? The rules for adamantine are established in the rulebook. You don't need to waste word count restating what the properties of the material are. Just say it's a +2 keen adamantine greataxe and then get to the stuff that makes it Superstar.

If I keep putting off apartment-cleaning, maybe I'll make dedicated by the end of the night!

I think we might have seen the same item at the same time...

I've seen it on at least three items so far, hence why I called it a trend.

I understand the reasons why this format is used. I'm just getting really frustrated that I can't uprate both or downrate both items. In one pairing I vote for the one with the least mistakes, then two really good items show up and I pick the better one. So I have upvoted something I hate and downvoted something I like, with no way to express my feelings because anonymity.

It can be frustrating, but you're doing exactly as required. Each vote is only between the two items on the screen. All the rest do not exist for purposes of that particular vote. It's just a point of determining which of the two items is better. I find it helps me pay attention to the minutia, especially when two items appear equally good or bad.
