Added more danger to project now.... We should have another art preview up soon as well.
Oh, and an interview with an artist for the Southlands is up today. He did the art for the Emerald Order and the Hand of Nakresh, great cult groups written by Jeff Lee.

I know, it's killing me. Having freelancers of the caliber of Steve Kenson and Ari Marmell and CA Suleiman on this project is going to be great.
Oh, and Steve says he's writing an order of justicars of Sekhmet. Which should make catfolk everywhere happy.
EDITED TO ADD: Make that "precognitive oracles of Sekhmet and the fiery Eye of Ra". Which sounds good to me!

Also today, a little toast to our fur-bearing friends, with excellent art by Bryan Symes.
The gnolls are a standard PC race for the Southlands, with a lot of rules support and extras (included for backers, of course).

Yep, Adam Daigle joins the crew at $46,000 (and we're close, just about $300 away!).
Very happy to have him on the team for Southlands.

Both the 500-backer mark (where coins-as-add-ons and hero lab files were unlocked) and the $45K mark were hit this weekend-- and I can personally thank backers for the $45K mark, as I'll be doing that writing.
Adam Daigle joins us at the next monetary mark ($46K), and the bestiary becomes its own book (with a 5E option) at 600 backers, only 84 people away...

Hi, sorry for the thereadjack, but are there plans to release compilations of all the .pdfs issued lately ?
You will have to be more specific. Compilations of which PDFs, exactly?
Generally speaking, Kobold Press sometimes does compilations, but not always. Most of the time, the compilation comes along with a print version (like the Collected Monsters of Sin or the New Paths Compendium).
Back on topic: Hero Lab files CONFIRMED!

Less than $200 to go until we hit $46,000 and the illustrious Adam Daigle adds the Floating Village to the ever-growing Core Southlands book

Backed! Now just waiting to get to 600 backers so I can have a new Bestiary!!! And speaking of Bestiaries when is Kobold press going collect a bunch of their monsters from online and the magazine and release a hardcover, color, printed Bestiary? Oh and any chance of seeing some new drakes of the Southlands?
Wolfgang Baur Contributor; Publisher, Kobold Press; RPG Superstar Judge |
The idea of a compilation Kobold Bestiary is.... Well, on the one hand it makes my heart go pitter-patter because OMG I LOVE BESTIARIES. On the other hand, I know what the art costs are like, and I know how much editing and development they take. The work required is distinctly non-trivial once you start talking about 100 or 200 or 300 well-done monsters.
I suspect that the idea of a Kobold Bestiary that combines, say, the Midgard Bestiary with the Collected Monsters of Sin and the Book of Drakes and a Southlands Bestiary and all the many monsters that have appeared in various Kobold Press and not been collected anywhere.... Well. That would be worth discussing in its own thread, I think. :)
Back on topic: The chances of new drakes in the Southlands are pretty good, actually, given that backers can submit monsters for the Bestiary. So I expect we'll see one or two. Maybe an orchid drake, or a poison frog-eating drake, or a jungle drake, or a tomb drake, or a mirage drake...
The Southlands are full of possibilities.

The forum opens up to a wider group of backers if we hit a few more goals.
And yeah, that Ninth Arabian Night looks pretty sweet. Need more backers!
So far in the Red Portal we're discussing the gods of the Southlands, how they interact and if they are masks with the gods of the North.
Hope to see you all there!

Actually, we are just $19 short of putting Adam Daigle into thekobold text minescore book for Southlands!
Heh, math is clearly not my strong suit :)
Funny side story - at our gaming tables, my rather poor off-the-top-of-my-head math skills are somewhat legendary. Any time I roll a large number of dice and then need to add a big bonus to that number, I typically turn to one of the more mathematically skilled players and ask what the total is ("Bob, quick - what's 73 + 28?") Everyone chuckles and then someone inevitably says something like "Yes, we know - you write and make pretty pictures, you don't do math!" (this because that's more or less how I respond if someone has the nerve to question my lack of math prowess! :)

Less than a thousand to go before Servants of the White Ape is unlocked. I suppose it's time for a teaser.
The great southern jungles are a powerful natural force. Their verdant growth has reclaimed the ancient ruins of lost nations, burying the remnants of lost civilizations beneath their green expanse. Within the vine-choked ruins are sometimes dark secrets best left forgotten. An ambitious foreigner from the north, eager to capitalize on the rich resources of the region, stumbled upon lost power of ages past, hidden in a moldering temple. Through intensive study, he harnessed a portion of that power. Now he has revived the old practices, spearheading an ancient evil's return. The White Ape and its followers again rise to trouble the region.
Unlock this stretch goal and put a little Heart of Darkness into your Southlands campaign.

Less than $100 until we hit $48,000 which unlocks The Servants of the White Ape. After that, there are two rapid-fire stretch goals to knock down (one at $49,000 and one at $50,000)
AND ... only about 50 backers to go until we hit the magic 600 Backers and then the Southlands Bestiary becomes a STAND ALONE, SECOND book!

Could see this becoming a chicken and egg situation.
With a standalone bestiary, I think this project will see a good bump when setting agnostic backers sign on for the monster book (provided proper word of that gets out) and maybe grab the setting book in electronic form.
Until then, we'll have the steady grow this project has been experiencing until we get to the Southlands Bestiary. As we approach the threshold, the pace will pick up as people will want that bestiary. So back now or back later, it's up to everyone to unleash the monsters.
I've been monitoring the bestiary chatter across several kobold dens. This will be a fun monster book to have if even half the stuff under discussion makes it in.

Jeff Lee sort of went all-in with the Servants of the White Ape. I'm very pleased with the results, and it means backers now get 6 PDF extras of about 15 to 20 pages each, IN ADDITION to the Southlands core book and other rewards.
Oh, and it's been forever since I posted the Southlands Canonical Link-thing.
Would love your support for this book, even if it is a simple $1 pledge that forces me, FORCES me to produce a big Southlands Bestiary!

* Is the magic of Nuria Natal Ley Line/Geomantic? This was mentioned a looong time ago - Kobold Press own Journeys to the West had plenty of NPCs that were "Geomancers" by Class, and there was even a Geomancy Order in Barsella - the support for Geomancy in the Midgard Campaign Setting is sparse, and the Ley Line magic in Deep Magic was underwhelming (though I loved the map of the Ley Lines - will that be appearing in Southlands???
* Is there an analog for geomancers to use in the stead of these JttW NPCs?
* Where are the heru - southern huginn (tengu)??? Sorry if I missed any mention of them, haven't been following the KP blog since the forums died away…
* WIll the Southlands be added to the Midgard Atlas App? I know when I asked this about the Western Islands from Journeys to the West the map of which appears in the Bosun's Bonus PDF (thanks Brian Suskind!) the answer was a resounding NO! C'mon - let's get the Midgard map updated!!!!

The Southlands Preview is here:
http://paizo.com/products/btpy99jn/discuss?Southlands-Preview
So, in the section on races, is that going to include things like alternate racial traits/ regional traits specifically for those characters originating from the Southlands? I'm looking particularly at the bonuses pdf critters from the Advanced Races series, but the question applies generally as well.
terraleon |
We have been writing up regional traits for the primary manuscript, but the bonus PDF Advanced Race documents (gnolls, aasimar) are already written, and they do not contain regional traits. (they couldn't, because we were still writing or had not written the regions when the AR pieces were done)
