I cant wait to get into the game and start seeing what everyone wants to play.

I was just wondering. Who in the Vigil is into RP?

I am. Especially with the Pathfinder IP :)

I am but I type so slowly that I will be known as "Silent B". VoiP RP could be done, I suppose... though I never have and am pretty shy. **blush**

I ran a game once where I had to do the voice of a bird companion.

I am very much an rp-pvper. I will be playing a Garundi/Mwangi cleric of Sarenrae

Not for long stretches I'm afraid. I'm much better at vignettes.

You may count me among this number. I love RP'ing and look forward to doing so in this game.

My RP is going to be in terms of the game, like we talked about in the RP thread. I'm really not interested in /sitschair and /strokesbeard--I agree with Ryan that's shooting incredibly low, and something we got used to from the impoverished design choices of MMOs.

I'm interested in actually playing a role, e.g. a combat leader wholly devoted to pushing back the forces who serve the demon lords and arch devils.

Goblin Squad Member

I used to be huge into RP but have fallen out of it in recent years as the majority of RP approached barfly type. I prefer character growth / tabletop campaign type stuff.

I don't have much faith that our literal actions in game will approach anything I'd consider real RP but I'm willing to be pleasantly surprised.

Pfft, that's not RP, that just emotes that assist in RP by giving your character the physical ability to do something they can't normally do.

Yeah, emotes are a nice-to-have feature, but no, they aren't RP by themselves. I so want to cue the "back in my day" speech, but I think we all know what we're talking about.

I think you will be pleasantly surprised actually. Think about the pvp, the crafting, the trading, the caravans, the political agreements, etc. All of these things can be played out in character and I honestly think it will be the heavy rpers who will have an advantage over the non rpers in the long run. Relying on things like simple emotes is shooting low as was mentioned but those settlements that have a heavy rp focus that mix their rp with actual aspects of the game will probably be the strongest there are in the long run imo. Especially the evil kingdoms. I know alot of "kingdom" rpers who when given the opportunity to play this game are going to be incredible because they won't separate their rp from the in game systems. In themeparks rpers are forced to do this due to the fact that they can't do much besides fighting and simple crafting that doesn't mean much.

Sandboxes are a completely different animal and rpers in the long run are usually the most dedicated players and the last to leave. Get a few settlements of rp-pvpers playing as bandits, mercs, assasins or heroes along with their rp-pvp bretheren who focuses more on settlement building, crafting and non pvp pursuits and yeah, those guys will be incredible. Even more so if you have a few pro rp settlements pop up to form a kingdom. Rpers also attract a huge number of followers who might not rp necessarily but like to be around them just to enjoy the show. And its one thing to have a band of mercs who are running around oocly all the time vs a band of mercs who are completely in character and follow their code of ethics to a t.

Mark my words the first great CE and LE "kingdoms" not settlement will be a full on rp kingdom. Rpers are so used to getting nothing or having little to play with that once the guest used to having a playground with alot of freedom in a sandbox like PFO (And this is happening right now in ArcheAge, and these same groups are preparing for EQN as well) They are going to go absolutely nuts with the fact that they now have games that not only force roleplay to some extent on everyone but enable those that really get into it to completely dive deep into it. Rping in a themepark just cannot compare and should not even be thought of as the extent of what rpers can accomplish in a game that works in their favor like any sandbox mmo. Especially fantasy ones which we have never really had before.

I can think of a few house guilds that were heavy/medium rp from GW2 that if they came to PFO they would be downright scary once they grasp the systems.

Goblin Squad Member

Oh, don't get me wrong. I'm well familiar with sandboxes and RP. I just don't have the same glowing opinion of sandbox games that many seem to have. That isn't to say I don't like them. I just look at them from a quality game experience and production value standpoint. Player made content can be very bad at times. ;)

From the standpoint that all actions in a sandbox game are RP I just don't agree. I'm not saying you can't do it. I'm saying I don't like it. There will always be a separation there for me. I'm not saying the separation is bad either; it just exists for me. When discussing treaties and other matters I feel it's necessary to take game mechanics into account, which is when the RP starts to break down. The vision for this game also seems to lend more toward playing a role rather than role playing based on previous RP threads. Quick in game actions also don't lend well to delving into the whys of action. Why is a character doing what they are doing. Playing a role to me is more character lite, action heavy.

I guess one could say I'm a gamer and a roleplayer and while the two aren't mutually exclusive the venn overlap is perhaps a little smaller for me in recent years. I have strong opinions on realism and propriety (god modding, OOC/IC separation) that I feel in the newer generation of rpers has lost its emphasis. I'm not one to force my opinion on others so I've just fell out of RP lately. I'm always willing to jump in and test the waters, however. I just get out if they're cold to me or someone has relieved themselves in it. ;)

Also, since I don't want to completely derail the thread: Ozem's Vigil, where diverse opinions are to be found! Great beer to be had; if I have to make it myself! *whispers* And where not everyone is obsessed with the law.

Merkaile of Fidelis wrote:

No need to whisper it. Neutral Good is a valid option for our settlement. In fact that might be where I land. We will have a strong contingent of Lawful Good types, but plenty are planning on going Lawful Neutral and Neutral Good. Our settlement will certainly reflect that side as well. The Lawful Good part just seems to be getting all the press right now. ;)

Will mechanics be in place for people to run solo POI's? Man, I'm out of the loop. I just assumed due to lack of #'s the focus would be on Settlement management, not POI's. Cool though. What are the benefits to having other people run POI's?

You know, every time I see a FMS member post, I can't help but think its the name of a spaceship.

Also, I wish my name sounded like a spaceship, but nobody names a spaceship "Shane". :'(

The advantages of having someone else run a POI is 1) influence is coming out of their pocket not yours and 2) there is an extra influence cost if your company owns more than one.

So if you have someone you can trust they provide the settlement as a whole a great benefit (as different POIs will have different benefits) and that specific company gets hands on management of an aspect of the settlement.

its a perfect balance between wanting to own something but not wanting to be in charge of a settlement.

Not only that but POIs will probably be the focus of PvP raids when war is not declared. So for some people they will enjoy being a target and fighting others off.

Actually USS Shane Gifford or The Gifford is a perfect ship name, especially amongst Frigates and amphibious ships. People named ships aren't uncommon. When you have hundreds of ships names get hard.

Example: http://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/USS_Hawes_(FFG-53)

A note, that ship is the only one in the US that can fly the Jolly Roger officially.

Are you worried that a LG settlement will be all craft (and religious services) and no play? Such is not the case. I know of more than a few people that are interested in PvP, especially if it's on a smaller scale!

Goblin Squad Member

I think it would be weird to be in command of a ship named after yourself though. I assume the naming's usually something done posthumously... Maybe I don't want a ship named after myself after all. :P

Yes typically you have to die to get something named after you, unless you are Bobby Bowden. Luckily in this setting you'll just come back again!

Steps quickly up to Caldeathe.

"Uh, hi! I am the diplomat you are looking for! Ignore the muffled screams coming from behind yonder shrubbery, it is merely a squirrel. A very, uh, large, squirrel. So, what highly informative secrets do you wish to discuss with the brave and self-righteous Vigil of Ozem?"

Interesting. You look so much--smaller--than I remember you.

No matter. I was simply wondering if you had received the case of beaver-piss ale I sent over, and whether there was any response to my requests?

Goblin Squad Member

"Yeah, well, Reduce spell still wearing off. I didn't personally set my eyes on the ale but since I didn't see any on my way out it must have been really popular and you should definitely send more. A lot more. Oh and uh, your requests seem to have been lost in translation a bit. One of our novice scribes thought it would be a good idea to record it all down but then the poor klutz spilled holy water all over it. By the time the Powers That Be went back to review it, all they got was gibberish. So go ahead and list them again so I can write them all proper and we'll get ya squared away in no time."

Perfectly understandable. All right, I merely asked if forces we discussed in the first message were where you thought they would be on this date, and whether your agent in the second city had achieved his goal? Also, did your mother's surgery turn out as hoped for?

With a non-committing grunt a man in earth tones taps some mud off his boots. He doubted he'd have a chance to even get an ale before having to head back out again now; hunting mischief makers and false ambassadors. As he walks out into the surrounding wilderness three other similarly dressed people fall into a rough "formation" before fading into the surrounding green.

Goblin Squad Member

Ah! Good gentle Bringslite. I confess I was a bit confused by his failure to acknowledge our earlier discussions, but I simply thought he'd had a few too many at the bonfire last night. Though now you mention it, he does seem a bit underfed and like maybe he's had a few chiggers in his sleeping roll.
