The Voice from the Depths |
Hello this is a recruitment to get some more players for an old hombrew campaign. If you are interested the stuff to get you started is in the spoilers below. This campaign will run to level 50. That's right level 50. This is not going to be a low power campaign by any means.
Two players are already on, but I am willing to take up to four more people for a total party of six. If there is something missing from the spoilers below feel free to ask me about it. I will be keeping this recruitment open till May 4th.
1. 28 Buy Points
2. Any class and race allowed. 3rd party classes, and races okay. Archetypes are allowed.
3. Start at Level 8, but level 7 starting gold and one free outfit 10 GP or less.
4 Superfast progression: This means 75% of the fast progression chart value and to get to level 21, add 7% more experience from the previous total, level 22, 7% more experience than level 21's total, etc.
5. 3 Traits. 4 if you take a drawback.
6. Guns are emerging, but early firearms only.
7. HP: We always have Max HP.
1. Backstory is important, but I'm fine if it is short and too the point.
2. Try to include at least one plot hook as that will help me with dming.
Schwartz |
I'm one of the two people already signed up. My character is Schwartz. He's an android. He's a kind of a rogue/fighter build with levels in Time Thief and Swashbuckler. He's kind of a jack-of-all-trades when it comes to skills and a finesse/crit-focused melee combatant.
Backstory is basically that a bunch of nerds wanted revenge on high school bullies and created him to try to send him back in time, much like a certain Governator that he's named after. But their attempt failed and gave him the ability to manipulate time slightly.
The Voice from the Depths |
1. The second player is playing an Eldrich godling, and from what I have seen he is mostly like a magus right now, but that may change as time goes on.
2. There are no restrictions on class or race, but remember that if you decide to add templates or play a high RP race then you will be slightly lower level from everyone else until it balances out.
3. Any alignment goes. The only thing I ask is that you try to refrain from trying to murder all of your party members.

Campaign question: To give a brief description of the world and what has happened. Everybody started out in a futuristic modern day world with all of the races instead of just humans. The party fell into a time/space warp that sent them into a new world that had prophesied their coming as either the salvation of the world or it's destruction. The party hasn't done any major searching yet, and they are instead currently taking up odd jobs around town.
Mythic Question: I'm not sure yet. I may have it so the players get to level 50 with 10 mythic tiers, or maybe just level 40 with 10 mythic tiers, and it may just end up with just 50 levels.

Voice, LRGG has a legendary levels supplement available. I have a PDF copy if you would like to glance at it on Google Docs. I also have scanned the Epic Level Handbook from 3.X for my convenience and could let you take a gander at that as well.
I'm also curious as to how you would calculate monsters into class level equivelants? 1 CR = 1 PC level? I don't think I will make a monster PC, but I like to know my options!
And. Just so we're clear, the setting is like Modern Arcana turned Rifts?
gyrfalcon |
Hey Voice, I was thinking about a Saurian Shaman. Her main roles would be melee & summoning big dinosaurs, but has all the typical flexibility of a Druid. I played this one up to 3rd level in a campaign where the DM got overwhelmed with Real Life and dropped off of the boards.
Feel free to take a look at her backstory. The details of it were built into that specific world, but I might try someone similar for this, if it seems like a good match.
Can you say more about "started out in a futuristic modern day world"? Would a Saurian Shaman fit? Are our characters going to be familiar with modern technology? Is there magic in the world we came from, or did we just suddenly gain powers when we were catapulted through time?
EDIT: Ahhh, Magnu123, I see we had similar ideas!
Voice, I've but together basic crunch (spells & equipment still TBD) here
Backstory will come based on your answers to the questions above.
Cheers,
The Voice from the Depths |
@Red Velvet Tiger: I would enjoy looking at that, and for monstrous races I will say that 1 CR= 1 PC level, and I will follow the rules for monstrous PCs in the bestiary.
@gyrfalcon: The party started out in a futuristic world around 2033 where magic did exist, but it was less common than technology, and the party was pulled back through time and space to a world that seems to have the development of the early renaissance technology level that relies a lot more on magic than the world you are used to. Your characters would know how to work modern technology, but chances are you will not find much modern technology in this world.

So, although the world has early firearms? would it be possible that a gunslinger from the future could craft better firearms? Obviously an assault rife would be unfair, but revolvers and rifles wouldn't be that far fetched. Even if its not now, but at later levels that would be awesome. I just ask because with one shot a round at lvl 15+, your damage is minimal compared to a wizards fireball.

Another option that might fit the futuristic theme better: a mutant (or alien?) shapeshifter.
Mechanically, it would be a phasm with one class level.
Let me know if either the saurian shaman or the mutant shapeshifter seem like potentially interesting fits.
I looked over the bestiary monstrous PC rules and have a few questions:
How will you do ability scores (e.g. the phasm has the following array: Str 12, Dex 16, Con 15, Int 18, Wis 15, Cha 14). Does it stay the same? Get modified by the point buy?
How do you so feats? E.g. get only the monster feats for those levels, or get the standard every other level ones in addition? If no additional ones, can we trade out monster feats?

I was debating on this game (weather to apply or not) and I see that the two remaining players are both players in my game. interesting...
and it looks like the Dm was once a smoke knight of Absolom with me.
very interesting
but now what to play?
or should I apply?

@gyrfalcon: Either of those ideas could be interesting depending on how you wanted to go with it. For the phasm you get it's modifiers as is, but you can switch them around to different stats. You would get the monster feats only, but you could change them into anything that your monster qualifies for.
@Edward Sobel: Nice to see you here. I was really sad to see that campaign go away as I thought it was great fun to start as a npc class and work our way up.
@Whack-a-Rogue: Alright that looks like a solid submission.
@Billybrainpan: I look forward to your submission.

Dotting for interest as well. Thinking of submitting either something like an archetype summoner with the power to keep up with 3pp material, or a party-buffing melee shield (some combination of cavalier, ranger, barbarian and staff magus) that can take advantage of the campaign's higher level to keep around a decent BAB and feats while also throwing down plenty of useful buffing spells.
PSY850 |
I'd like to throw Caiden in for consideration. Caiden is a Half-Dragon who until being thrown into this strange world spent most of his time in or around a monastery high in the mountains, where he learned the ways of the wild during his frequent excursions to escape the monotony of his cloistered upbringing.
Mechanically he is a Half-giant base race with the half dragon template for 2 levels lower than the party and he will be starting off as a ranger but with a desire to explore the mental powers of his forebears at later levels.
This campaign sounds like a whole lot of fun and I would be honored to join, please let me know if you like my idea and I will begin the actual mechanical construction =)
PSY
Edit: I also have a more involved backstory I only included a bit here on how he developed his skills as a ranger.

Questions-
Is it ok if I just submit a character concept and a background, and do the crunch if accepted? If I make an alias for a mind flayer and don't get accepted, it may never get used. I can do the crunch in just a couple hours if accepted though.
Also, since mind flayers aren't a playable race, I'm not sure what to do. Pf's rules are a little different than 3.5's were. Its a CR8 monster, so would I just start out with 0 class levels? I'm fine with that if that's an appropriately balanced approach. It wouldn't take long to gain a class level with a superfast progression anyway.
jimibones83 |
@Jimibones: pathfinder CR is actually different than 3.5 rules
the group is level 8, in pathfinder that is CR 7, so you would be starting as a 9th level, so you would not advance until everyone reaches level 10 then you would take your first class level.
That's how it worked in 3.5 as well wasn't it? Anyway, I was referring to it being a playable race in 3.5 but not in PF. If I were to use the actual mind flayer from the 3.5 monster manual, I believe its an ECL +8, but since it starts out with 8HD I wouldn't actually need any class levels and I would he right on par with the rest of the group. However, since PF is a bit different I was thinking it would be better to use the version in Psionic Unleashed, called a Phreninc Scourge or something like that, but there's no detail as to playing one like there is in the MM. It also has 8HD though
The Voice from the Depths |
@PSY850: That's fine, but I would like a little more backstory if you don't want to write up the crunch right now.
@Syndir Apep: Alright when you are done just say so and I will look it over.
@jimibones83: Yes you can.
@Billybrainpan: As long as it starts out as a cr 7 or less then yes you can be a ghost and then just add on class levels.
@Edward Sobel: Alright I look forward to your submission.
jimibones83 |
I could tweak this a bit to be LE and it may seem a bit more fitting, but I think this works well to be played as N. Any good would just be too far of a stretch for me for this race.
He would start out with just his racial HD, but would advance as a psion. I'd like to use the 3.5 version of the mind flayer if that's ok. The PF version by DSP is pretty similar, I just like the WoTC version a bit better.
With a rare outlook compared to those of his kind, he tends to see benefit to neutrality over the selfishness of his kin. He works with races his brethren usually see only as food and pawns, and typically restricts feeding to enemies or competitors.
He has ventured out of the underdark to the surface in search of power unknown, such as time travel and knowledge of the Great Old One
If I'm accepted I can whip up everything needed in a matter of just a few hours. Please feel free to browse my alias Ransaq for examples of how I play. I can post many times per day and would get a lot of joy out of playing this character:)
