I have heard "Taking 20 takes two hours" more times than I have taken 20 in PFS by a factor of six.

10 rounds later with the rage prophet out of spells(cast all heals) the party barely managed to survive a black tentacles and two Yeth Hounds, which made two other PCs flee the entire combat.

...yeah I hate when that rage prophet blocks and hogs all the fighting :)

Yeah. At least there's a line of reasoning to go with that. People who say that taking 10 takes half as long as taking 20 drive me up a wall, especially since I cannot find any basis in any edition for saying this. I have literally handed someone a core rule book open to the take 20/take 10 section and they simply handed the book right back to me without reading it while insisting they were right. Luckily, I have not seen this from a PFS judge yet.

Depends on what the take twenty is. I had someone insit they wanted to take 20 on searching the entire manor in hell knights feast. I told them that would take several weeks.

this comes from confusing a Perception check with something called Search, with is old 3.0 & 3.5 rules. Perception & Search are tow different things. So a "Search" can take however long you (as the judge) would think it should take (maybe days?), and a "Take 20 Search" would take 20 times as long...

a Take 20 on a Perception skill check should take 1 minute... and net you what you would detect if you had rolled a 20 on a Perception check from your current location.

Gee and here I thought you couldn't take 20 on a perception check because it is an opposed roll - your perception against the target's stealth.

There's actually nothing saying you can't take 20 on opposed checks. However, you will tend to automatically fail them.

Quote:
Since taking 20 assumes that your character will fail many times before succeeding, your character would automatically incur any penalties for failure before he or she could complete the task (hence why it is generally not allowed with skills that carry such penalties).

Which means you would most likely be stabbed by the hidden enemy before completing your take 20.

If I were DMing and someone took twenty searching a room if there bonus would eventually find the stealthed person I would let them eventually find them.

If just takes forever as they toss the room, and the person hiding does not have to stay there.

you do mean that they took 20 on a SEARCH or the room and NOT on a Perception Check (Which are two different things) right?

Trapsmith: "I take 10 on a perception check from the doorway, or rather from just outside the door, then take 20 on a perception check from the same place, results of 40 and 50 - plus 2 more for traps."

Judge: "while you search the room..."

Trapsmith: "who searched the room? no one even went in there!"

Judge: "you said you were taking 20 to search..."

Trapsmith: "nooo, sorry. I guess I wasn't clear. I take 20 on a perception check from outside the room, getting a 50, 52 for traps..."

The players and the judge need to be talking the same language. And a "search" is not a "Perception Check"....

GM: From were you are standing you don't see any traps, but if you go inside the room you might get a better view.

This is a bad thing?

I love those cards. They're great initiative trackers. Though mostly I'm concerned with player name, character name, initiative bonus, and possibly perception or sense motive if I know i will have to roll those secretly.
