I wanted to know, are the books that are unavailable ever going to be printed up again?
I only saw three hard copy AP books left for kingmaker, 4,5 and 6. I do so hate to buy half a collection, are the first three going to ever be printed up again or shall they only remain available in pdf?
(I don't know much about this kind of stuff, so maybe it's an obvious yes but....well, no idea about this kind of stuff)

I don't think paizo do reprints of the adventure paths. The first of the Kingmaker volumes seem to have sold out both here and at amazon around the end of December. I just managed to grab my own copies at that time.
You could try some of the smaller hobby retailers as there might still be a few copies in stock somewhere.

Probably not, and if they do, not soon.
Paizo has a very deliberate policy of letting older APs fall out of print -- that's a feature, not a bug. Yes, that can be pretty annoying when you're trying to complete a set. But you can always get the .pdfs -- they'll be available forever. But as for the hard copies, nope. Paizo only prints a certain fixed number of each module. When those are gone, they're gone for good.
Why does Paizo do this? Two reasons. One, there's a large fixed cost to doing a print run of a module. So they can't just go back to the printer and say, oh, we're out of Kingmaker #1 -- please print another thousand. That would cost a lot more money than the original print run. So they'd have to either raise the price on the reprinted module (bad) or lose money on it (worse). It's possible that the gradual advance of print-on-demand technology will eventually fix this, but it hasn't happened yet and I wouldn't hold my breath.
The other reason is that the AP subscriptions are Paizo's meat and milk. And at some point, they have to let those old APs slip out of print -- or they'll be cannibalizing their own business, because the old APs will be competing with the new ones. Yes, that's frustrating for us. But it's part of their business model, and I'd rather have a healthy Paizo continuing to stay in business than one that tries to make everybody happy and implodes. And, again, you can still get the modules as .pdfs.
Finally, Paizo did reprint one complete AP -- the first one, Rise of the Runelords, in a gorgeous deluxe edition. It costs a lot of money ($200, or $180 if you buy this week and use the "ksthanks" February discount). But it's actually cheaper than trying to pick up the modules on eBay; the last time I looked, the first one alone was going for over $100.
So, short version: if it's OOP, it's gone, probably forever. If it's going OOP, grab it now. Paizo generously posts every six months or so which products are almost gone. As it happens, they did this just a couple of days ago: http://paizo.com/store/blog/v5748dyo5leh0?Going-Going-Gone-2013-Edition. As you can see, Kingmaker is rapidly disappearing, along with the few remaining modules from the first two APs. If you move fast, you can still acquire a complete set of the second AP (Curse of the Crimson Throne, #7 through #12) -- it's 3.5, but converts easily, and it's excellent.
Anyway: Hope that helps!
cheers,
Doug M.

I've recently discovered Noble Knight Games and can heartily recommend them for out of print stuff. It looks like they only have kingmaker 3-6 at the moment, but they seem to regularly get "new" stock in.

Thanks for the info and the link, I know I can get it via pdf but I like the hard cover copies for collection purposes (if I ever wanted to use the APs I'd immediately get the pdfs of them).
I can see why they'd avoid another printing run, but here's to hoping they perhaps hopefully get around to a collector's edition that contains all the books.
I usually buy all the books I want in one go every 4-6 months which is why I was surprised to see that the fifth book from the shattered star AP (which is pretty recent) was already running out. I'm thinking perhaps I ought to start buying this stuff sooner.

I'll just second Steve's reommendation. Noble Knight Games is a great place to get out-of-print material and even if they don't currently have the product you're looking for, chances are good that they'll get it eventually. A neat feature on the site is that you can add a product to your wish list, and as soon as Noble Knight Games acquires a copy, you'll get an email notifying you of such.

I'm about to start using the Kingmaker Rules for a PC built nation, and I've been looknig through the Kingmaker books for rules on an important specific - but I can't seem to find it.
I've been looking for rules on what is required to be done to consider a hex 'explored' so it can be added to a Nation? What sort of time does it take to do this? (they are 12 mile diameter Hexes, I believe, is the 'standard')
Also, Are there things that would be positive or negative modifiers?
(Like if members of the party could fly might help, whereas having to explore a swamp might take longer than plains, etc.)
If someone could provide a few answers and/or point me in the right direction, I would really appreciate it.
Thanks!

The Anniversary Edition is cheaper than the Deluxe (60usd).
But they have said they don't plan on selling compilations of older APs. They maintain that the Runelords update and compilation was a one off.

I....um....actually got both. The deluxe edition was too good to pass up and is a wonderful collector's item and the other one is the one I flip through.

Exploring a Hex is covered in the first book (p.57), and is what the PCs are tasked with doing... exploring and mapping The Stolen Lands area. There is a table showing the time required based on the party's movement rate.
I expect that flying doesn't help much as the "explore" part is meant to be looking at the area in more depth than just a fly-over would give, although long-term flight (natural ability, or overland flight every day) would probably just substitute for the walking movement rate. It matters less *how* you're moving than *how fast* you can move, I think.
Note also that revised and expanded versions of the Kingdom rules are expected in the Ultimate Campaign book coming this spring.

I just came back from Jetpack Comics in Rochester, NH. They still have 1 copy left of Kingmaker Stolen Lands and Varnhold Vanishing. They don't have an online store but he said he could set up a buyer via Paypal. He's also going to check with his smaller distributors to see if they have any Kingmaker stock lying around.

Check out Jon Brazer's Book of the River Nations for all of the exploration and kingdom building rules. We are using them for Kingmaker and they are great.
Make sure you also check out the "non-mint" section of the paizo shop. I believe there is a full set of kingmaker books there?
I think I bought the last Stolen Lands last month. Sorry.

I still have multiple copies of the entire adventure path. I admit it: I'm a hoarder. When I realize things are starting to become scarce, I buy everything I can find. I just don't want to be the store that runs out. I want to have everything.
Even making this post was hard for me to do, because I might sell some of my precious copies...

Thanks for the tips and links guys but I...decided to fork over the $85 for the first book and $65 for the second book off amazon. Not a pleasant purchase, but better get it now before any insane price spike like the one for the map folio ($900, are you kidding me?).
Just out of curiousity, is there any place I can read about how the subscription works? I'm not fond of the idea of paying a shipping fee every time a single book comes out ONCE a month.
Steve Geddes |
The 30% discount (and the free PDF of every issue) will probably cover the cost of multiple shipping charges.
If you're subscribing to the Adventure Path line, you also get a 15% off everything except for non-Paizo PDFs. You also have the option of purchasing stuff but 'putting it aside' until your monthly subscription ships, which also cuts down on shipping costs.
If you're paying $85/$65 even occasionally for one issue, I'd strongly recommend subscribing. It's hard to see how you can possibly end up worse off.
Douglas Muir 406 |
If you think you're likely to buy the APs anyway, then the subscription is almost a no-brainer. The 30% off will cover the shipping, and the 15% off all other Paizo products is pure gravy. (The 15% discount also includes purchases of older modules, whether print or .pdf. So if you're planning to buy three Kingmaker modules from Paizo, you'd save $3 on each for a total of $9 right there.)
Also, if you make other purchases from Paizo, there's an option on the subscription page where you can say "ship with my next subscription". So instead of paying separate postage on all of them, you get them shipped together and save. (Of course, if you choose that option then you have to wait until your subscription arrives to get your other stuff. Decisions, decisions.)

Haha, yeah, that map folio is currently up to $3,500 on the European one.
Before you even consider paying some ridiculous price on that marketplace google "The Infinite Loop Of Algorithmic Pricing On Amazon".

I've noticed that you don't get the discount for scratch n dent sales, but they are priced lower than a 15% mark down anyway and I can't find anything wrong with them.
Also +1 on using the sidecart. Both my subscriptions come at the same time, and I usually order something on top of that so even with shipping, I am still paying less than cover price.
And its like Xmas every month at my mailbox.

Thanks to using a 3rd party logistics company (who suck), I'm forced to 'keep my ear to the ground' to make sure they don't lose or mix up my order. It would drive me crazy if I had to check several times a month, every month, for my subscriptions.
If I could set my subscriptions to accrue and then get sent after a period of, say, 3-6 months, that'd be perfect. The roleplaying game subscription I think sends something once every six months, sadly I'm not sure my other subscriptions can ship them with that order (the faq made no mention of combining subscription shipments).
I think I'll probably end up going with the AP subscription though, even if I don't take any of the others (considering the 30% off shipping and 15% off other paizo items, I am fast beginning to regret not having signed up much earlier). If it's possible to combine with other subscriptions, I'll just take the roleplaying game subscription and combine it with that.

Um, did I mention that I have these in stock? Looks at post immediately before. Yup. <Shrug.> Guess I'm okay keeping them in stock...
I'd act fast then, the 1st Reign of Winter has already shipped, but is still available for subscription. But who knows for ow long.
Any time you add a subscription you will be shipped the book that is used for the cover page of the subscription item when you purchase it. Right now that book is Pt 1 of Reign of Winter, and will remain that book until they start shipping Pt 2. You have a few weeks before you have to worry about not losing out on book 1.

Just to clarify - its 30% off the cover price of the AP, not of the shipping. All non mini, non comic subscriptions will ship out at the same time automatically each month (if you have an RPG sub as well as an AP sub it will be sent with that month's AP (ie there are generally 3 RPG releases a year, but they release concurrently with an AP instalment).
You can't "save up" your subs over six months or something - apart from the storage hassles and increased chance of error, paizo need that monthly revenue to pay the bills (they're not allowed to charge your credit card until your product ships).

Thanks Urath DM - I'm grabbing the PDF right now... I think that means I'll have all of them except the last one.
Alas, I'm not running the standard Kingmaker, I'd prob. have gotten the map folio already if I was (it looks like a great set)...but I'm using the rules of Kingmaker for a Midgard game that I'm running; they're lv 5, and, just starting some kingdom building.
(Which is just as well, a member of the group is already in a standard Kingmaker game - and I didn't know until yesterday).
Admitedly, with the ammount of random books and things I've picked up over the last few weeks, this is quickly becoming the most expensive game I've run...
...but... the materials I'm ending up with will probably result in having good stuff for several games. And it's good enough work that I really don't mind supporting the folk who make it :)

On the chance that paizo is reading this thread I would like to see a subscription where i can get the entire path including the recommended books like irrisen and people of the north for a path so that i dont have to eat the shipping charges each time and its a oneshot deal each time in case that particuliar path doesnt interest me. Just a thought since although I liked almost every path the westcrown one i didnt care for much as it relies heavily on perform without ever mentioning how important it is that all the players have it.

I think they bundle the APs sometimes for Holiday sales. That is the closest it comes I believe.
Council of Thieves wasn't all that great. But the Sixfold Trial was the most fun I have ever had on a Tabletop.
Douglas Muir 406 |
The closest that Paizo comes to this is the holiday bundles. A typical bundle is all six volumes of an AP, sometimes including some extra material (like the player item cards, or the Guide to the city where the AP takes place, or a map folio for the adventure, or some such). You can save a significant amount of money on these, but you may or may not be happy depending on whether you wanted the extra stuff or just the AP volumes.
Anyway, AFAIK these only appear around Christmas. So if you can't wait nine months, then you have to pick them up piecemeal. The best way to do this is probably wait until an AP is complete, /then/ subscribe, /then/ buy the completed AP and all the supporting stuff at once. You're only getting 15% off instead of 30%, but OTOH you're only paying postage on a single big package instead of six little ones. I haven't run the numbers, but I strongly suspect you'll end up ahead.

As little as I think I'll use the PDFs, at least currently, I think the subscription is still probably a better deal than just buying all of an AP at once with 15% off. Namely because, in the event that my hard copy falls apart, I can take the PDF to a printer's shop and have them print and bind a new copy. Once I get around to buying a tablet, I think the PDFs will come in a lot more handy for me than they are right now. Though I'm still of the opinion that flipping through a hard copy is a lot faster than going through most PDFs.

I GM with a laptop, and run my game from the PDFs. The PDFs are indexed, so it's really easy to jump right to the section you need.
Honestly, I've come to the conclusion that I generally prefer the PDFs to the hardcopies, and pretty much only buy supplemental material on PDF. Of course, I have access to free B&W printing as a job perk, so I also make hardcopies. I find hardcopies to be preferable when I'm sitting in an armchair just reading them, but the PDFs are more useful when I'm GMing.

Any chance you still have a Kingmaker map pack lying about? They've become virtually impossible to source (especially here in Australia!), but I am still keen to locate one.

My DM had them printed out on A3 format, so they are really nice and big, and strong paper too. We <3 'em!
Tablet are also nice, but not as easy to write on 'em, post stickies, scratch things through if they complete an adventure.
So I have printout's, and can simply throw away sections of the AP that I no longer need.. Or that are killing my back by slowly adding really interesting information, but not to take with you for 3 running years (and counting). ˆˆ

I thought it was probably a longshot as these seem to now be like gold dust... however, I'm hopeful that I've got a copy of number 2 still to come, and I've already got 4-6, so hopefully I should be able to dig 1 up somewhere.. (Might break the bank a bit though lol)
I don't know what it is, but I just really want to have the actual physical copies, you know? :)
It cost me upwards of £100 to complete RoTR but it was worth it (and I then went and got the AE too!)
So, thank you very much again for your time and effort!
