Inqusitor Build Advice

Advice

I'm playing in a game where I'd like to attempt a detective based character, but I'm not entirely sure what to play. Base power level is relatively high (32 point buy, 2 traits, starting at level 3 and 5000gp).

I felt that inqusitor seemed to fit the concept best, but I'm not entirely certain how to build for it. Any advice is welcome, and I'm not particularly tied to the class if something else fits the idea better.

I think inquisitors are fantastic, I'm playing one in kingmaker.

Recognize that you've got two components to your build here, and they don't really interact a lot, though some. You need to investigate, and you need to fight.

Fighting is largely based on abilities, gear, and feats. Looks like you chose archery. That's fine, but it isn't the only way to go, nor does it have much to do with detecting.

For investigating, it's good to have skills and abilities. Inquisitor gets abilities, like detect alignment, track, and stern gaze that are quite useful. So, next is skills. Aside from the obvious perception, knowledge skills and social skills are the next best choices. Heal's good for cause of death, why not buy a healer's kit while you're at it?

Make sure you've got the INT for everything that you want to do. CHA is also useful, and here's where the tension lies, more investigation stats means not quite as good with fighting.

I notice you're a little short on INT, and you especially don't speak many languages. That can hurt you. You have language dependent spells, and may find clues you can't use. Plus, linguistics allows for forgery.

Also, you made a good choice with disguise self, but you have no ranks in disguise. You also can only disguise yourself as a courtier, and lack a disguise kit. T hat's strange. Linguistics would help here as well, not much point in the elf disguise if you don't speak elvish.

Are you sure about trade domain? Fast doesn't help archers much, you generally want to stand still and shoot arrows. Check the inquisitions too, there's good stuff there.

Adaptive bow? At your level, str is unlikely to change. Buy that later, and grab 1000 gp of scrolls and potions. Investigators are prepared. You can't even detect poison right now, and finding a secret door will be a challenge.

I have especially enjoyed knock and tongues as 2nd level spells. Really allow my character to do a wider variety of things.

That's my two cents, good luck.

I was not aware there was such a thing as 32 point buy-in. One of my players mentioned it earlier this week and I laughed.

Waiting for the 64 point buy-in...

Well the Inquisitor abilities and spells can help with most of the detective work, as far as your build goes it's generally best to focus on being as viable in your combat style as possible. Since you're going for archery, anything that boosts your to-hit would be advisable, your damage will come from bane, judgements and full attacks.

Unless your Cha score is that important, drop it to 10 and boost your str or con. You have the skill ranks to keep Diplomacy up, and with the stern gaze ability you will add half your level to Intimidate.

What are you using as a melee weapon? Make sure you stock up on different arrows as you level, and you also have three courtier's outfits in your equipment.

agree on rethinking the Travel domain, the movement is cool but if youre shooting from a distance how much will you use it?

I personally like the Heresy Inquisition b/c it lets you dump CHA and use WIS for Intimidate and Bluff. Conversion lets you use WIS for those 2 and Diplomacy also but Heresy's higher evel abilities are better.

Not adding to you detective theme but reducing your need for multiple high stats.

I disagree, social skills are a great way to 'detect'.

In real life, detectives canvas neighborhoods, and talk to all Indus of people. Needs the right campaign, though.

If you wanted to be better at Bluff and Diplomacy instead of Intimidate/Sense Motive the Infiltrator archetype might be up your alley. IMO Diplomacy works a little better/more often than Intimidate, and it IS the Gather Information skill.

Also, once you hit 5 (6?) have you thought about the Sleepless Detective Prestige Class? It's got some neat abilities for an Investigator (including Int to Sense Motive, so even if you went with Infiltrator you'd have a boost to that)

32 point buy is something that can be "unlocked" as an option on DDO MMORPG. Of course a +32 reflex save is something that isn't unheard of in that game either. Ive been told I can join someones group because my reflex save is "only" +26, I don't have "at least" 400 hp and my heals only roll out at 199 hp per use.....

just going to throw it in to the mix. Bard Archaeologist also would probably get you towards your goal.

In regards to the point buy, his reasoning was that the strongest classes are single attribute dependent anyway (i.e. Once a scarred witchdoctor maxes constitution the benefit they gain from additional attributes is significantly diminished), whereas classes like the monk who gain the most from it are also the ones that could use the help.

I considered the conversion inquisition, but the Trade domain's power should outscale the benefits of using wisdom over charisma at around 6th level (Tying with it at 6 if I get a wisdom headband), is usable a good number of times per day, and also applies to sense motive. In addition to that, the land speed increase and dimension hop are generally better than a one minute dominate person.

A wand of cure light wounds is probably a good idea for out of combat healing, I'd forgotten to pick up consumables. I'll take detect poison instead of brand, ask the sorcerer to get a wand of detect secret doors and purchase some cold iron and silver arrows; adamantine is a little too expensive at this point without abundant ammunition, and the kits for my skills.

I mostly left a decent amount of gold unspent, since at least the first part of the campaign is going to be set in a single city, so I can generally buy most mundane things when I need them.

Bard: 'Detective' ?

Is the ranger melle or ranged? If his ranged he will be better at range and likely more manuverable... SOMEONE has to be walking in front and favored for melle.

If ranger is archery might be best to go melle inquisitor OR keep the travel domain so your more maneuverable then the others and can sacrifice them to melle better then (they will inevitable scatter and try leaving you to melle if foobar happens).

Silver Crusade

For arrow types, don't forget the weapon blanches. Adamantine and Ghost Salt (in PFS Field Guide) stack with the other types if they are put on. At 10g and 20g per arrow, they can be expensive, but oh, so worth it when you need them.

Liberty's Edge

If you're going for a ranged inquisitor I'd look into the preacher or spellbreaker archetypes. Solo tactics and bonus teamwork feats aren't the greatest with a ranged build. Of the two I personally prefer preacher but I can see a case made for the bonuses against mind affecting magic the spellbreaker gets.

Also the feather subdomain may be a good choice. The perception bonus will make finding clues much easier and a solid mount to fire from is always nice.

Finally for a detective inquisitor the orison 'Sift' is great flavor.

Honestly I would bag the Ranged build and get yourself a nice two handed weapon. Your party Ranger being the only guy in melee is going to make for a very rough day for him and put you on healing duty a lot.

I am playing a VERY similar concept and went with conversion inquisition and took an elven curve blade with weapon finese. Now you dont have to go that route because your point buy is silly high, but not needing STR to be a capable melee combatant or CHR to be strong in the social game was huge for me, and our party Ninja is not alone in combat with our all ranged/caster party.

I also took Sift at first level, just discuss how your DM will rule it works before hand. Some DM's get very specific about the wording making it borderline useless. But it has come in handy. Basically I can search a large area in one turn...makes you feel like Sherlock Holmes, taking in the whole crime scene.

Silver Crusade

Personally, I would use CHA as my dump and use a conversion Inquisition or Heresy so that your Wisdom becomes your social skills Mod. Now you can intimidate like a boss, diplomacize like a boss and bluff like, well you get it.

but that's just me.
