It's been almost three months since our Kickstarter closed, I figured it was a good time to do a public update on the status of the Ultimate Psionics hardcover book.
Our two new races - the forgeborn and noral (aka the dreamscarred) - are finished. Both were designed using the rules in the Advanced Race Guide, with some additional psionic abilities added in.
You can see the artwork for the new races here: forgeborn and noral.
Both pieces of art are by Joe Shawcross.
We have our elan and half-giant archetypes in playtesting. The elan archetypes are in Beta, while the half-giant archetypes should enter Beta soon. The xeph archetypes should start to enter playtesting next week. As with all of our other player content since we started on Psionics Unleashed, the playtesting is completely open to the public.
Elan - Cerebromorph, Menteur, Pattern Wielder
Half-Giant - Battle Paragon, Kinslayer, War Hulk
The new tactician archetype, the Metanexus, is in playtesting, as well.
We've posted the artwork for three of the monsters in the Bestiary. One of them, the Phrenic Scourge, isn't new - but the artwork comes from the stretch goal to upgrade all of the B&W artwork to full color.
Deranged Trepanner
Mathara Plant
Phrenic Scourge
All three monster images are by Rick Hershey.
We've identified our forty new feats and have posted a partial list as we sort out names for the additional feats. Playtesting on those should start next week.
The GM section has had its first portion posted for preview, the section dealing exclusively with the Nova Phenomenon.
We are continuing to brainstorm the 20 NPCs for the Book of NPCs stretch goal, and artwork orders for that will be going out in January.
We've just about wrapped up the psionic character sheets - pending some minor revisions from the initial preview.
We've finalized our layout format - and if the feedback from our backers is any indication, it's a hit.
And the first panel of our four-panel GM screen has been completed, with the second expected in the next week or two!
Lots and lots of work being done. Still a lot left to do, but we're steadily chipping away at it.

Well, "take the place" is a little dependant - Psionics Unleashed will always be the "main Core Psionics Rulebook" that we work from, but Ultimate Psionics compiles these two books, adds all errata, simplifies and streamlines rules. So yes and no - its a revision, but not necessarily one that replaces Psionics Unleashed and Psionics Expanded.

Can we get clues to the origins of the Noral and Forgeborn? Or is such secrets under wraps still?
For the forgeborn, here's their origins: "Believed to have been created centuries ago during a great war between psionic nations, the race of creatures referred to as the forgeborn were left to their own devices within the barren wasteland the war left behind. A hybridization of flesh and minerals, the forgeborn are varied in appearance and form, but were all created by merging psionically-empowered materials with the body of a humanoid to fashion a new creature."
Now, for those at all familiar with the Third Dawn Campaign Setting, I'd say that's a pretty obvious tie-in, but we're leaving it intentionally generic so that they can be used outside of Third Dawn... but when we get around to fully updating Third Dawn to Pathfinder, I think you can expect to see the Forgeborn making an appearance.
For the noral - they're simply a new race being introduced. They are a symbiotic race - the tentacles displayed in the picture are the symbiote, which is sometimes known as a dreamscar, as the symbiotic bond causes the noral to no longer dream. So those norals who have undergone the bonding process are referred to as the dreamscarred. :)

I'm really excited about this! Especially that it's going to be a hardcover. I wasn't able to participate in the Kickstarter, but by gosh I'll buy this when it becomes available!
Also, in case you missed it, we will be making preorder options available, likely adding in some of the perks from the Kickstarter pledges. Those who got in on the Kickstarter will still get the best deal, since they took the biggest risk, but we like to give out preorder perks, too. :)

My FLGS stocks 3rd Party stuff for Paizo. But I also know that if I ask nicely they'll special order me something like this. And while I have the two books that are getting combined into this one, I'd still want a copy of this for completeness and for any new material they manage to squeeze in. I agree whole heartedly with what DSP is doing for adding psychic abilities to traditional fantasy.

Can I ask a question that will hopefully not insult to Psionicly Enthusiastic! I really got turned off Psionics by the whole gems and ectoplasms fluff that 3E introduced. I had trouble reading the Psionics Handbook due to this. Is that the fluff for this? Or is it more pure mind powers like 1E?
Thanks
Kvantum |
Psionics Unlimited is a PfRPG conversion of the 3.5 Psionics Handbook, gemmy/ectoplasmic fluff and all, and Ultimate Psionics is the compilation and expansion of that, basically being the "Core Book and APG" treatment for psionics under PfRPG mechanics. Not likely your cup of tea, then, but you can always look over the crunch on d20pfsrd.com if you want to at least get an idea of what to expect mechanically.

The core fluff remains the same as in 3.5, but we are introducing a section in Ultimate Psionics (from one of the Kickstarter stretch goals) about how to replace that with other elements instead of gems / ectoplasm / etc.

Want to see one of the panels for our GM Screen?
That's an beautiful piece of artwork! Jason Rainville never fails to amaze.
I've heard very little about the GM Screen. Will it be the same heavy stock as the Pathfinder screen? Will it incorporate information from that screen as well as for Ultimate Psionics so that both can be referenced from one source?
Jeremy Smith Publisher, Dreamscarred Press |
The only printer I've managed to find who says they can do the size of screen we want can't do the thickness that Paizo did (would love to know who they used and if we can afford them...). Our current plan is for heavy stock paper laminated and trimmed.
If you've seen the Rappan Athuk GM Screen, that's what it will be like in terms of thickness and material.
Although I'm open to changing that if I can find a printer who can do heavier stock. I just haven't had any luck on that front.
The content is intended so that you only need one screen. So it will have stuff similar to what's on Paizo's screen, but also psionic material.

I was very sorry to see I missed the Kickstarter on this product - I would have liked to have pledged.
As it is I will definitely be picking up at least the pdf version once you have released it. I always liked 3e psionics and I am glad Dreamscarred has continued to carry the torch.
One question though - I noticed on the Kickstarter page one of your rewards was HeroLab files for the backers. Will these files be available to the public at large once the book releases? HeroLab is such a huge help in character creation - I'd like to be able to add this content to my install.
Thanks.

I filled one entire shelf (and a bit more) of my bookcase with D&D 3.X and Pathfinder books and I told myself: ''that's enough, I don't need more books, I don't even have the space to store more books and I have to stop spending money on RPG books'', but then Ultimate Psionic was announced. Maybe I'll make an exception for you guys. :)

That is the plan, yes.
We are currently trying to see if the hero lab folks can let us implement Psionics for Pathfinder. Worst case scenario, it is treated as spells, but we are trying to avoid that.

Thanks for the response!
I'm not complaining. I can definitely wait for quality. Especially since it cost me nothing personally. A friend knew that I was interested and offered to pledge for a hardcover and a few add-ons as a birthday present.
I'm just wondering if it is something I will see in May or June of this year or at the end of 2014. A ballpark timeframe will sustain me.
Thanks again.
