If I'm thinking of what you're thinking of. That thing can stay in the museum it's allegedly currently located.

If a certain staffer is developing Rasputin, I wouldn't be surprised if Rasputin has a slam attack.

Ever since the title was announced months back, I was wondering if they'd take us on a sojourn to the real Rasputin and Earth, and now that it looks almost certain, I think it's awesome.

Especially since this is very likely to prove a testing ground for even more exotic APs... like Numeria. :)

Your party gets hired. To find it for Iggwilv.

Don't give it a name. You're giving it power in the world when you do that.

Well, this confirmed it. This is the campaign I'm running after my online group finishes Runelords or my current one finishes Council of Thieves. I don't care if we already have a schedule set up involving Kingmaker and Way of the Wicked, this is happening. This AP is looking to have so much concentrated awesome that I squeed when the dots started to connect.

You hear that Paizo? You made a 6'3'', 250 lb. man squee.

I know where all of you are going with that discussion, but I'm hoping he can generate bright yellow force fields in the shape of fists.

A few months back I was listening to one of the Gen Con podcasts. In one of the sessions, the developers, or how to write for Paizo or something similar, this adventure path was being talked about. During discussion, James asked "how would you feel about visiting earth" and NO ONE jumped on that. There was a lot of discussion going on and James' comment was totally glossed over. I LOVED the idea, and I cannot wait for this AP.
So yes, I fully believe this will be THE Rasputin. Giggidy.

If it's just a drop into Rasputin's house, fight your way through some guards, kill him and go, then no big deal, but also why bother having it on earth.

All I know is that Grigori Yefimovich better stay the f~#& out of Galt.

I must admit I am rather surprised with how many people are fully on board with this to be honest. Go across Tian Xia people throw a fit, have pirates people through a fit, go to Earth everyone is on board. Seems odd.

This is what throws me the most though. Do others also see Numeria as more exotic then going to Earth? I see going to Earth especially modern day era Earth to be as far along the exotic spectrum as you can get. Numeria has some weird space ships and I kind of like it as a setting, but it still seems to skirt the fringes of Fantasy. Nothing about WW1 says fantasy at all. Personally it seems like it would open up a whole Pandora's Box of problems, but I must admit I look forward to seeing how they go about it.

To be fair I am pretty wary of this. I dont mind exotic (Been fine with the rest of the Ap's plot till this point). I just think that there is such a thing as piling on to much exotic. At this point I'll wait and see if it ends up being to weird for my tastes I'll probably just sub the book or the earth part for a module.

I think you've provided your own insight to the paradox without realizing it. The elements you mention: Tian Xia, pirates (and the polarizing possibility of firearms they bring with them), etc, all changed the nature of Golarion itself when introduced. By opening up those avenues to exotic locales as accessible parts of Golarion, I think it may cause some stress for GMs running more "traditional" games. Like players showing up with ninjas and gunslingers when the GM was hoping for some traditional sword & spell dungeon-romp fantasy. When it becomes not only part of Golarion canon but highly-featured aspects of books like Ultimate Combat, it gets harder and harder for GMs to say no to those elements, lest they alienate PCs who want to play around with those new toys, because they are now an official part of the game world.

But if you bring the adventure elsewhere--taking it off Golarion--it is less threatening, and, most importantly, you can explore new realms and exotic locales, whether it be other planets or weird pocket dimensions, without redefining the fabric of the game-world assumptions of Golarion itself. It is safer and less threatening, I think, because if GMs know they hold the key to that particular lock, and they stay more firmly in control of the introduction of those elements, then there's a certain comfort that they can sort of swim around in that exotic pool for a little while, then dry themselves off and get back to business-as-usual, the key to those locales swallowed, if need be, so that those aspects don't ever again taint their more "pure" definition of canon Golarion. Denying a PC concept from another planet or dimension is easy enough, but it gets harder to say 'no' when someone brings a samurai PC to the table that could have just caravan-ed right over the Crown of the World.

So, if all that's all true, and I think it is close, then, yes: Numeria IS way more exotic than going to Earth. Not only is it actually more exotic than real Earth technology, but it is an integral part of Golarion, rather than some far-off, normally-inaccessible place, and not something GMs can really block access to or knowledge of if they are running canon-Golarion.

Just my thoughts. I'm cautiously optimistic!

It's also a smaller part of the AP. Jade Regent was the "Far East" AP. S&S was the "Pirates" AP. This AP may go to Earth, but it's not the "Go to Earth" AP.
It's not even confirmed exactly how or even if that'll happen and it's looking like part of one book, not the focus of the whole path.

Except I do not really see any difference in the two. If one person can get there, so can another. If Golarion can go to Earth then so too can Earth go to Golarion. I feel like this redesigns the fabric of the game world even more then any of those other APs by a million. The Pirates have always been there, they were just never a focus, nothing in Skull and Shackles really changes the world any more then any other AP. The same goes for Tian Xia, that was there all along, there were paragraphs in the World Guide, there is a Guide for it even, completely independent of the AP. That is not at all the case for Earth. There is/was no mention of it until now. Exceptions can become rules. The AP makes real life canon, and that just carries a lot more baggage then it is worth in my opinion. I guess it is a slippery slope, and I fear Hitlers invasion of Varisia (not that I think that would ever actually happen, but I am not a fan that it could).

This also make it worse not better in my opinion. If you do not like Pirates then you clearly should stay away from Skull and Shackles, same thing with the far East and Jade Regant. I just ran a two year campaign that heavily revolved around a Demon War, so the AP after Reign of Winters is a no go for me. I heard it was announced, shrugged and said better luck next time, and moved on. With Reign of Winters, most of it seemed really awesome. I think it would have been something I would have liked to run, and something my players would have enjoyed, so the fact that a just a little part of could make it unplayable is a tad annoying. If it was a Go to Earth AP, I would have just hand waved the whole thing from the beginning. I think that might have been a better idea, but I also though going to Earth would have been more polarizing, so I will just let Paizo do its thing.

It has always been made clear by the creative director, James Jacobs, that the known universe is part of the world of Golarion.

It came up in discussions about Cthulhu but I have seen it elsewhere as well.

Golarion’s sun is not alone in the cosmos. Beyond strange
Aucturn, beyond the Ice Belt where comets are born and
gossamer creatures of frost and light dance between the
scattered bodies, there is a greater universe—a universe of
nebulae and black holes and spinning galaxies, in which
every point of light is a star that may host worlds of its own,
and strange eyes looking back down at Golarion’s tiny sun.
In practical terms, this means that nothing is too
bizarre to exist in the Pathfinder universe, as even the
gods themselves may have limited reaches, or lose sight of
what happens in the next galaxy over. Golarion’s galaxy is
enormous, yet it’s only a single point of light on the great
black canvas of the Material Plane. “Crossover” campaigns
are easy, as any campaign setting you enjoy might be
revolving around a distant sun. Perhaps Earth is even out
there somewhere. For more information on creating your
own branches of the cosmos, as well as tips on designing
the alien cultures that live there, see pages 164–165 of the
Pathfinder RPG GameMastery Guide.

I'm wondering if Paizo might use Anachronistic Adventurers classes for some of the NPCs on Earth. Actually, it might be interesting to have one of the PCs be from Earth and use an Anachronistic Adventurers class, having been transported to Golarion via some method at/before the beginning of the AP.

Pretty doubtful. I think there's all of one instance of non-monster 3rd party material in any Paizo product, discounting the core rulebook. I have about 0.01% hope that they'll use the dragonrider for book 4. But I might be missing a few 0s.

I can think of three instances in the original Rise of the Runelords AP right off the top of my head...

I had meant during the Pathfinder era, rather than the wild 3.5 era. I you know of other instances, PM me as I'd love to see them.

Remember, folks, there have been in-game influences from Earth in Golarion from the start. Not only is Baba Yaga a direct import of a legendary/mythical figure from Earth, but there are several deities worshiped on Golarion who are or were worshiped on Earth as well—the big two being Lamashtu and Asmodeus.

I'm not sure HOW we would have explained those three alone if influences from Earth weren't somehow able to reach Golarion.

In any event, while I knew some folks would be unsettled by some of the developments in Reign of Winter, what we came up with for this Adventure Path and, in particular, for "Rasputin Must Die!", is really pretty neat. Everyone at Paizo is excited about how it's going to work out, and over the past several years, that's almost always translated into being something that overall folks are excited about as well.

So... no need to panic! We'll make it awesome!

Sovereign Court

I'm expecting that the route from Golarion to Earth will be through Baba Yaga's hut.

That sounds like a pretty ace way to stop any mass movement between the two places.

Will there be a sidebar advising GMs on how to proceed if they are not interested in dealing with this weirdness?

/signed on everything Timothy has said

edit: Assuming there is weirdness at all, of course. Since we don't actually have any details, I guess it's a wee bit silly of me to be asking if there will be sidebars addressing it.

I am sure this is more a general statement, then anything, but just for the record I am not panicking. I personally do not like the idea but that is pretty much just my personal opinion on the matter. I don't think the sky is falling or anything, I just do not like this one particular thing. I also do not want it to seem like I am taking up a cause. I am glad that the folks on the boards and the folks at Paizo are very happy about this, even though I am personally not so thrilled with the idea. It would be foolish to think everything was going to be to my taste all the time.

I asked the question "Who is Rasputin in Rasputin Must Die?" at Gen Con and James did (after some confusion as to the nature of my question and whether I knew who Rasputin was.) confirm that it is "The" ("our") Rasputin... but would not confirm how or where Rasputin would be met.

Well, why didn't you say so, man!?

You know....that offers ample opportunity for certain missing indivudals from Earth history to turn up there, kept relatively safe and in a sort of stasis all this time. Kind of fitting too....what with a new queen in a faraway wintry kingdom possibly being chosen. Maybe the PCs could be retrieving a possible replacement.

Could make for quite the fairy tale twist.

Cheapy wrote:

I was thinking aloud about this last night, and James made two comments on what I was blathering about.

First, I was intrigued by the fact that one of the rare references to Earth in the Pathfinder setting is that, correct me if I'm wrong, Cthulhu is canonically located on the little planet we call home. James comment was that there weren't lovecraftian themes to Reign of Winter, but it was interesting to think about. Especially what with Mythic rules finally being released right after this AP is done. Finally given the means to go to Earth (assuming that's where we are going), it could be interesting as an addendum to the AP to go and fight Cthulhu. I'm sure it's within Baba Yaga's powers to Mythicize everyone :)

Second, I was thinking about how since this is an AP with many fairy tale themes, it could be playing up Rasputin's supposed magical powers. This offers the possibility of an Earth where wars are fought using magic as well as bullets. Gas Cylinders are suddenly "alchemist fire"-like objects, but with cloudkill, tanks are actually self-powered constructs, and soldiers are supernaturally given strength from their squad's chaplain. At this point, I thought I recalled that cthulhu was mentioned to be locked away on a "magic dead" planet...But then everyone's favorite creative director said the following words:

"Earth is not magic dead."

Oh man.

I do not. That makes me Super Happy!

EDIT: It's one of the many Paizo books I desperately want to own, but lack the finances to acquire at this time.

How would I make Rasputin...

If Earth is magic-dead, I'd make him a rogue with the con-artist archetype. Otherwise probably bard with the celebrity or demagogue archetype, or maybe monk with monk of the healing hand archetype.

Baba Yaga's hut bypasses a LOT of rules about getting around worlds and planes in Pathfinder. It takes a heavy plot based artifact to pull that off.
