Only in my dreams do nightmares come

Recruitment

You've been a gamer for years. Maybe you started in high school, or college. Not as much when you were younger, what with the career, the family, grand kids?

Your partner may not like it, they may be gaming with you, they know this is your opportunity to unwind every week. Last month you finished up a long campaign that you've been playing for the last few years.

Tomorrow starts a new campaign. The interesting part was that your friend Jordan wanted everyone to set aside the holiday weekend. He had been working with a local special effects company and he was going to kick this game off with an immersion experience. You are supposed to pack for a two night, three day mini-vacation. The company is providing the food and beverages. Your group is providing a live test of the holographic projectors. And you get to start off your next game in style. He told everyone to stat up tenth level characters for the new game, this one would be a homebrew that would borrow elements from your favorite settings such as Dragonlance, Faerun, Eberron and Golarion.

Jordan said core races and core classes only. A little unusual for him to provide restrictions, but you were up for it.

So you packed a bag or two with some clothes and creature comforts for a few days camping.

*******

This game will allow for some metagaming by its nature. Being able to metagame modern knowledge and blend it into the fantasy character may be beyond the challenge of some. Please consider carefully how you would roleplay situations where the fantasy character knew more than they should, or doesn't know something they should know.

To represent the character playing the fantasy character, we will be using the modern rules located here.

Selected players should put together a background of their modern character. We will not be using the full level characteristics from this site as it will only be representing your metagaming abilities. As such, players should use the guidelines for the modern hero class at 10th level, with one archetype. This will provide 5 feats from the modern list, 5 talents, and 5 training. Players may select up to difficulties, each providing an extra training. Select your class skills and distribute your skill points. Please note that many of the knowledges will have multiple specialties. If you want to know a lot about game world histories, then select know: history (fantasy rpgs), if you want modern history then it would be know: history (modern). Hero points will be in use with some of the modern adjustments.

What I would like to see up front is a background that describes who your modern character is as far as personality and gaming style, what their archetype is and the specific profession they are in, and what their modern family is like. Two to three paragraphs will suffice.

Dotting for interest will place said player on a back-up list and they will not be considered during the first round.

I would like to have five to six players.

Once I have selected the players, they may work on their modern character and their fantasy character. The modern character should be built on a 25 point buy. Since there is an expectation that the modern characters are on the smarter than average side, Int may not be a dump stat. It is not necessary to note the modern character's BaB, saves, or AC bonus as we are only using some of the information from the modern character on the fantasy character's sheet. A list of equipment and gear brought to the game will also need to be noted. I will ask for clarification or revision if value's are out of line with background/archetype.

The fantasy character will be built on 25 points. Core races core classes only. Archetypes may be considered. Two traits, any traits from a campaign will require background information. Max hit points, fantasy wealth of $62,000 gold, no more than 1/3 on any one item. Crafting doesn't change the retail value of what you can have, but does allow you to have customized gear, including partially charged wands.

Recruitment will be open until I have a selection of players that have provided the requested information and have flavorful concepts.

Yeah dude, this is CRAZY meta.

So basically what you're looking for is for us to create D20 modern players who are playing pathfinder?

working out some thoughts...

More to the point your going to be playing fantasy characters that have real world knowledge of physics, depending on the world, they may know some secret information (all that for the gm only stuff in splat books).

How often have you played a game and thought about how to get your character to 'invent' gunpowder, or a railroad, electricity, etc?

I'm wanting to run a midlevel game that is going into those ideas.

Interested. Working out a concept now.

Colour me intrigued... Will let the little grey cells work away for a while before committing thought to paper.

Doomed Hero here.

Background all worked out. Stats coming next.

Please tell me what you think.

Ooh. This is way interesting. And meta. Mmm. I'd like to play this.

Should I start making my character or wait until you've selected players?

Nice submission DH.

I'm thinking a matallurgist survival nut type (engineer archetype). Well educated about peak resources and climate change and knows the end is coming. He therefore spends his time trying to get as many valuable 'survival' skills as possible. He used to work in the corporate world, but he dropped out of the rat-race to open his own business as a blacksmith. He takes commissions and does everything from art, to weapons.

He also participates in organizations like SCA and HEMA groups. He games partly as an escape from the world he sees as doomed and partly as a form of creative expression. He typically gravitates towards characters that can hold their own in melee combat, but games so much that he ends up playing characters of all types. Alignment wise, he leans neutral good with chaotic tendencies.

He's married with two dogs, chickens, half a dozen pigs, three goats, two cats and a horse, but no kids. He's in his mid thirties, and lives in a rural community, working from home. Though he's well connected through the net.

Steve Michael Thomason is an honorably discharged military veteran in his mid-30s who suffers from PTSD. It's been almost two years since he's been discharged and he's picked up working at a local mechanic's. He doesn't have much family left. He used to live with his younger sister, who died a year back, and is now living alone in the house that belonged to her. His father is deceased and his mother and extended family lives a few states away. He's reluctant to move. He's met a woman he's interested in romantically but hasn't pursued it.

Steve is a nice guy. He likes having friends and he particularly likes having people who understand his issues and what he's going through. What he doesn't like is being alone and feeling lonely because he starts feeling numb and his PTSD gets worse so he tries to keep a somewhat active social life. He doesn't like confrontation and would rather excuse himself when such a situation arises until everyone's cooled down. He tries to keep a calm lifestyle, living in a somewhat isolated and quiet place (one of the reasons why his sister insisted on him staying with her), with his days following a rough structure. He isn't good with computers. He's easily startled and finds working with cars soothing, particularly liking driving around to calm himself, avoiding traffic and loud environments that remind him of war.

He's picked playing tabletop games from his time in the military, where they were a popular form of entertainment for soldiers to relax. As a gamer, he prefers playing Good characters that are often Lawful. He likes Strength-types and is usually a Fighter. His characters come across as simple, naive, and helpful but ultimately optimistic and friendly. He cares more about relaxing and roleplaying than "winning".

He has also since picked up knitting from someone he met in a PTSD therapy group.

Mechanics-wise, Steve is a soldier archetype with a specialization in explosives, sniping, and vehicles. This translates to Craft (Explosive), Craft (Mechanical), and Knowledge (Tactics). Also Profession (Driver) and Profession (Mechanic)[?] if needed. And Craft (Knitting). I'm not sure if I need to delve into this, but with the soldier archetype he'd have Weapon Training in high-precision rifles, explosives, firearms, hand-to-hand combat, knives, and whatever other details I'd need to work out.

He also has the Difficulties of Combat Paralysis and Paranoia which are the closest I think I can get to PTSD.

The little grey cells twisted themselves to knots and didn't come up with anything worthwhile - so I'll humbly withdraw.

Actually gonna withdraw my interest for this one. Sorry to jerk you around.

No worries, this is a style that would take a bit more thought, I'll keep it active and see if I get enough interest to start it up.

I'll keep the thread up until tomorrow morning, if there is no additional interest I will close it out for lack of sufficient interest.

Thank you to those that are interested in the idea.
