At Level 12 I was also getting caned by Super Mutants, but then got a modded rifle which does 4x the damage of my next best gun and that one-shots Super Mutants and two-shots tougher variants. Excellent.

Anyone done the Super Mutant-infested skyscraper mission? That was brilliant fun with the tougher weaponry.

Also met a lunatic raider gang called the Forge. Was attacked by their leader (in power armour) and six minions at the same time. I was way too low a level to handle it, but fortunately I had a Fat Man and one single Mini-Nuke in the inventory. That vapourised everyone in the (fortunately quite big) room but only took the boss down to about 50% health. Still an epic fight to kill him with Piper's help, but at least it was doable.

I'm really liking the greater presence of the companion characters. They butt in during cut scene conversations with other characters, they sometimes stop you to talk and occasionally flirt. Which is a bit weird given that from your POV your wife died like a week earlier, but okay. Unfortunately, although they're a bit more lively than FO3's companions, they don't seem to have the tragic through-arcs and more developed characters of the NV companions.

Also, I started off liking the armour system and now hate it. I'm tracking half a dozen armour stats instead of one and it's getting really annoying.

Quote:
I have like 8 Fusion Cores (I opened a random box somewhere and found SIX OF THEM), but I don't want to use the Power Armor for everything. Or anything, really.

Perennial RPG problem. You get a superweapon (which is what the power armour really is) and then hold off on using it until you really need it. Then you finish the game and realise you never needed it.

Not so much that, it's that it kinda makes the game too easy.

I haven't done the Trinity Tower quest yet, but I did pick it up.

One of the cool things about the comapnions is they have their own skills. EX you give Cait some Bobby Pins and she can open locks for you (I got her to pick an Expert lock I don't have the Perk for. Not sure if she can do Master yet.).

My friend is at Level 47, and he is nowhere near any measure of the way through the middle part of the story, what level are you guys at?

12.

Lv 20.

Here's a tip: equip and ready a gun that uses the same kind of ammo as a gun dropped by a defeated opponent, then pick up the gun by clicking the gun, rather than taking it from the body. If you have a drawn gun that uses the same ammo you get extra ammo. Auto fire guns give more surplus.

NOOOO!!!!!!!

Anybody know what the Vault-Tec Lunchboxes are for? I've found two of them now and they seem to just spray confetti and give a random item. But you can pick them up, too.

That's all they do. Some of the items are pretty good but they're mostly just an easter egg of fallout shelter.

I'm level 17, and despite not having very good armor or weapons, have finally started to see some success with my build. I'm focusing on VATS and critical building.

I've noticed I'm focusing more on the non-vats shooting in this one. I only use vats for charging feral ghouls or tiny targets (bloatflies). It's definitely a different experience.

Almost level 18. Crafting has helped out a lot. I have been focusing on crafting a bit, but I will try to get some more combat skills in. Having said that, I am loving my modded combat shotgun.

I did find a legendary set of boxing gloves that do +25 bleed damage. ~laughter~ Rather appropriate.

Another legendary weapon does +50% crit damage against ghouls.

I also found two legendary pieces of metal armor that boost my stats.

To be fair he was at 74+ hours of gameplay when I checked in.

I told him to remember to eat and drink water.

I brought him a chocolate and banana milkshake to help him keep on trecking.

I hit level 20 earlier and found an infinite ammo 10mm pistol. ~sighs~ Why couldn't it be a minigun? Why?

I have suped up a Combat Shotgun and dubbed it the Terrible Shotgun, after my favorite Fallout weapon.

I also found a sweet (for my level, since I can't make the parts necessary to use it without Gun Nut 3) Sniper Rifle.

Along with the removal of that annoying disease, which I am now 100% convinced removed some damage resistance as well. I survived a Suicider earlier, albeit with barely any help left...I've only gained two levels since I was getting one-shotted if one of those blew up in my general area, so not a ton more of HP. And generally speaking Super Mutants have gone from "untouchable" since their weapons shredded me too fast, to chumps.

grrrrr... It does NOT give infinite ammo. It just means you do not have to reload. What a rip.

Spoiler:
I actually feel sorry for Kellog. That does not excuse what he did, but...

So I have the Local Leader 1 perk... can someone tell me how to establish these fabled supply lines I've been promised?

I wish Bethesda would fix the companion AI! Aaarrgghh! OMG, they are soooo dumb!

Mine have been doing just fine. They're just as smart as the enemy AI, which is really all that matters.

You know that you don't really care for settlement building when you use the cheat codes to give you enough material to build up the damn places to defend themselves so you can forget about them. ~sighs~ Oh, here is a good list of them.

A good basic settlement video. Nothing spectacular, just an intro video.

In workshop mode, select a settler (I have found it only works using the generic "settler", not named ones), in addition to the option to assign them to a chore you should now have a "supply line" option (it's R1 on console). If you select that, you'll get a list of other settlements, and you can select which one to establish a line to. The selected settler will then begin making trips between the two settlements.

I armed and armoured mine, and try not to send them across overly dangerous routes.

You can arm and armor them? Do they even USE the armor? My companions never do.

~grumbles~ Settlement building is HARD!!! Of course, I was never very good at Mincraft either.

When you trade items with them (talk to them), switch over to their inventory. There's an option to have then equip weapons or armor, but you usually have to tell them to equip.

You can do the same with companions. The dog can wear a bandanna. :P

Yeah, you have to tell the companions to equip the armor now, instead of them just equipping the best set you give them.

On the plus side, this means that you can equip a companion with whatever you want rather than hoping something has better stats so they'll use it.

Yar.

Though it's a pain in the ass that "Take all" actually takes everything (it should leave their equipped gear IMO) and there's no "Give all junk" option like there is for other containers.

I carry my own junk, and pass surplus gear to my companion. :P

I fully agree about the take all though, it ought to exclude equipped items.

So, a very annoying bug. Lockpicking is suddenly working really fast. I tried internet advice but nothing seems to work.

Oooh, I get it now. Neat! Thanks!

To answer the question upthread, my character is level 17. I feel like I'm about halfway through the main plot but I've been trying to focus on it (when I'm not obsessing over settlement building; my char is like "Save child, build shacks? Save child, build shacks? Hmmm.). And I may be less far along than I think.

Melee specialty (she has killed a supermutant in one blow with a supersledge and a critical hit, although that was an incredibly lucky hit), but can fire a gun decently (but not with massive damage) even though she has low Agility/Perception (need to boost that but have been working on crafting and Charisma perks, along with the melee damage perk). I use VATS when I have trouble seeing a target or when there are a lot of targets and I need the slowed time to get a sense of where everyone is and who is the most likely I should go after... or just when I feel overwhelmed and need a second to think (which is probably often)... though because of low Agil I have limited AP.

Companion Spoiler:
Romanced Piper after impressing her with my congenial personality and superior picklocking skills. Seriously, the "I idolize you" conversation was triggered by picking a lock.

Companion continuation

Spoiler:
So far as I've seen, Piper gains positive opinion of you from every time you offer to help people, and pick locks. The helping part makes sense given her backstory, but I suppose she also likes the idea of the hidden being made open (or maybe just likes a fellow seeker that will charge getting into trouble to find what they want).

It can be bizarre though.

So, I found a second set of power armor, but it was missing both arms and the helmet.

Bring it to workshop maybe get parts from other power armor you get at start of game. Or maybe you can craft them.

At this point I'm level 23 or so. I find a lot of my XP comes from settlement building. Maintaining 10 settlements is hard, but caravans are amazing. I cannot for the life of me find enough oil and fiber optics though.

In the workshop, there's a way to tag resources you're seeking out. Then when you come across items that contain that resource, it'll show a little "magnifying glass" icon by the resource to help make it pop out to you that's something you're looking for.

I've been very lazily selling or scrapping spare weapons rather than swapping out and saving the mods. Gah! So many materials I probably could have saved... ah well. This game really needs a manual and a detailed crafting tutorial.

Good idea! I have it parked at Home Plate currently.

I can't seem to find the option for creating weapons and armor from scratch at the appropriate benches. Is it based on level in the perk? I've only got level one since I've not been focusing on building.

I'm 27 hours in and still haven't met a synth.

I don't know the truth or falsehood of there being a synth companion, but that read to me as potentially a nod to cultures and scifi tropes rather than confirmation that such a character exists.

I've met plenty. All but one has been shown mercy.

Mercy is my custom 10mm that does 43 damage.

I was thinking Blade Runner, personally. It's what I immediately go to when I hear "Synth"!
