I want to play an Epic Level Campaign

I wasn't stating that I wanted to see those types of backgrounds now, I was suggesting what I think would be a requirement for a successful game.

I also don't want players to be spending a lot of time making up the background and stat blocks or fleshing out some awesome idea they have only to find it won't fit the DM's campaign setting.

Having a power hungry chaotic neutral character probably wouldn't fit if the setting is call to arms of the realm's hero's to fight an incursion from hell, and the rest of the players were neutral/lawful good.

Think about this, at first level, having an evil and a good character can work. The players need to be careful of their characters actions. Now multiply that by the powers available to 20th level characters.

I can see arguments that even a good and a neutral character would have issues at these kind of levels.

Because, quite frankly, many adventures are going to be extremely polarized on the alignment axis. Hell ripping open a portal to the Ethereal plane as a door way to the Material plane.

Or some unknown entity opening portals between fire and water planes for the amusement factor and resulting chaos.

So either ignore alignment, which takes away some of the reasons for epic adventuring, or ask the players to keep their alignments closely aligned with each other, or require extensive background justification for why an epic evil and epic good are not trying to kill each other.

Also, the way I see having PCs in epic level play is that you would be dealing with challenges that are difficult for your level ie you wouldn't be able to one shot an encounter because it would be about as difficult as if you were level one PCs fighting a group of monsters or such that were still challenging (Orc army charging with horses). We died or escaped on that encouner, depending on who you ask, but that's what happens when you find some Orcs in the forest next to your military camp and invite in for some fun interrogation. If you are level 20+, maybe you find a cave of dragons. Maybe you travel to one of the parts of hell and are on some quest to retrieve some item from a High-Ranking Daemon or something. I don't know, that's just how I feel epic level should be. Another one some of you might get, like when you start the second playthrough/new game plus on Diablo, or Borderlands, or Dead Island. Your fighting the same enemies you were when you first started the game, but now they are just much more powerfully statted.

Races with small adjustments... I'm not sure about them, and I'll have to think about it. Custom built races are probably still going to be a no (even with the rules available on the srd, which I do thank folks for the link for) but more likely for reasons of setting than power. I'm going to be doing a lot of work just building the campaign world so that it can be fun for everyone, without having to try and figure out where some new race might factor in.

At our lvl I would think planar/space travel is easy. More so for spellcasters, you do not really need to make a place for rare or unknown races. I would think its better that way sense we will be a group of world powers. If we all came from the same world or plane then odds are we have run into each other or even worked against the interest of one another. Geb and Nex spring to mind off the bat and that was just two guys. How many of us would their be in the same sandbox so to speak.

@Baron I agree, with one expansion, at higher levels, I see less actual combat being the norm, and more non-combat solutions are available.

Two punks fight with fists and knives.
Two barons fight with their knights.
Two dukes fight by using hired mercenaries that aren't linked back to themselves.
Two kings fight with lots and lots of peasants, siege engines, or trade embargos.

A bunch of 20+ peeps fighting other 20+ peeps are going to lay waste to the landscape where ever they are. Destroying the village to save it, is rarely the way to go.

I've been seeing a lot of posts about how people want to play a 10th level this and 5th level that and 4 levels of the other. Which, at this stage, tells me they don't really understand what an epic campaign would be like. If this is just a single epic adventure, a one shot game, then okay. but since the decision on adventure/campaign hasn't been made yet, isn't this a little premature?

Agreed. I would like to stick to playing a character through it's 20 progressions, then multiclass. I understand the ninja 20/monk 4/sorc 1. Ninja is awesome rogue, monk get's ki at lvl 4/ and sorc 1 gives access to spells. I don't, however, understand the others. I chose to go with the Samurai as a melee class, and the Ranger as my preferred class to play for this. If you look at what I posted earlier, you will see I am strongly leaning toward a ranged character. As for type of game, I would prefer to play a campaign. Also, I would like to take one level of spell caster in there instead, and be an Arcane Archer/4, because I still need to be able to cast 1st level arcane spells. I would like to know if I am going to be playing in either game as soon as possible, so that I can make my character and be ready.

I guess I have to explain my guy a little. Going wizard 8/cleric 7/ mystic theurge 10 because this lets me have 9th lvl divine and arcane spells. Pretty much any spell, I can prepare. Also I can prepare divine or arcane spells in any slot up to 5th lvl spells, cure spells in a arcane slot for example. On top of that once per day I can cast two spells at once in a single action, one divine and one arcane. He can support, attack, and heal. The drawback being he is a pure ranged caster, lower class abilities, and lower channeling. But I consider it a fair trade off for having two full progression spellcasting classes in one.

OK then. That's an interesting concept.

I'm up for playing in, or assisting DreamAtelier if he chooses to run a game.

In the mean time, I have started a recruitment page and I am giving first options to the players that have posted at least twice that they are interested or have contributed to the conversation here-in.

Can you link the page please?

Sczarni

With my rogue15/sorcerer5, She comes from a family of arcane casters but her powers where not present when she reached the age to go off and study the arts with her brother. Instead she chose to put her skills to work as a sniper for the local guard. However as she traveled and studies the world around her, her arcane powers slowly began to emerge. Eventually she grew in fame as a skilled sniper and her linguistic skills became well know. Instead of a familiar she has a bonded weapon which is her longbow.

I am willing to CO-GM also if I can't play or get my own game up.

I think I'll settle on this for a character concept, since I've been all over the place with everything. 20 levels to fill in the gaps, then five for the icing on top, leaves me with a want to do many things.

That said, I think Ratfolk Alchemist of the Plague Bringer archetype, followed by a few levels of something else. Maybe rogue. I can't quite decide yet.

I so want in on this. Will get started on a character as soon as I can. are monster races ok?

Have you looked over master chymist if you want to build on top of your alchemist. Dont take me at my word sense I have little exp with alchemist.

Been reading through this...I'm interested but hesitant.

Here's fnord 72's recruitment thread

I'm waiting to see what DreamAtelier comes up with, as his concept sounds rather interesting.

Thank you DM Jelani.

I am looking forward to DreamAtelier as well, though I may run my own if there is enough interest.

@Omni: The issue with Master Chymist is it focuses too hard on Mutagens, and then I have to have an alternate personality. While that might be entertaining to play with, I might just pick up rogue, or fighter. Maybe rogue, for sneak-attack splash damage.

But if you take master chymist, you could be Golum.

Silver Crusade

I just spent the last couple days working on a Witch 20/Pathfinder Savant 5 with a shadow patron. I guess my main question would be what, if anything, would we be taking from 3.5?

Also, I just realized today how cheap 9th level Pearls of Power are when you're dealing with epic level wealth...jeez... Although, I think I may have gone a little overboard with gear, may need to pare back.

Official Recruitment thread is here for those interested.
