I do this in my home game. It's fun, I made it so there is only one class, I call the modern hero (very similar to the pathfinder modern class). All customization is done through feats, and I made most of the class features of normal Pathfinder classes available as feats (bombs, rage, rogue talents etc). The class gives you a bonus feat every level and then you still get the 1,3,5,7 etc feats.
My world has no magic, and PCs are all human. It's set on Earth though. Anything magical is handwaved as nanotech to maintain rules balance. Also gave the PCs all an altered version of the Paladin's lay on hands ability based on their con, also nanobot based.
I would just warn that with modern semi-automatic firearms and x4 crit modifiers, that your PCs will be doing a metric SH*T TON of damage. I've found at first it was way too easy for them, so I maximized monster HP, and use the defense bonus alternate rule from Unearthed Arcana 3.5 book (it's actually still too easy for them). Anyway, my home game version is running down since a player is moving away. I was thinking of starting it over online as a PBP once the RL one ends. I'd be just as happy to play in it though. Maybe we could collab on the setting/rules, and then one of us could GM something? I'd like to playtest what I've got more and tweak it/expand it.
Edit:I'd love to do a space opera with Golarion races and history. We could hang on to some of the Pathfinder classes, and then replace all the non-magical ones with the modern hero.

My idea is that the Pathfinder world will eventually evolve, and in this scenario, it has.
I don't have the scale for guns in campaigns, but it would be all the way, and it would be lazer guns, of a sort, so no tweaking damage, and armor would be for example:
Light Armor: A special microfiber jumpsuit for leather.
Medium Armor: A similar jumpsuit with small patches of restricting, but protective steel.
Heavy Armor: A larger part of your body is covered by such a protective steel.
Lazer gun: A reskinned pistol, that shoots lazers.
Light sword: A hilt with a small button on the bottom, when pressed, a light beam shoots out and retracts with another push, the light making a blade figure.
And magic would still be in full use, as for other races.
The party could be staioned in a floating city just above where ancient Absalom was, and they get to go and explore the ruins.
Just many of my ideas in a nutshell, it probably won't be much work, just posting a list of what weapons are available, armors also, an maybe a wookiesque race, with natural armor and such, that'd be cool, just little things, they could fight armored kobolds who are intelligent, with guns and such, you know, the little things...
