I do like a bit of Traveller, played 'Classic', GURPS & T4. But I have enough on my plate at the moment, so I couldn't GM.
Sorry Stormraven never saw that thread, Traveller was the first RPG I played properly. Great system and good times :)
No worries, DSX. It's nice to know there are other folks out there who enjoyed the whole 'lived in and worn down' non-shiny universe that was Traveller. I revisited the system (I grew up playing Classic) and visited a couple of the other iterations (GURPS and Mongoose) when I was jonesing for a game. The system had warts - not surprising given how it showed up in the infancy of RPGs - but it had great bones.
I've actually been tinkering with taking the Traveller world, weapons, craft, and aesthetic (borrowed mostly from Classic and Mongoose) and adapting it over to work with a more stripped down gaming system - D6 and Mini-6. I'm trying to recreate the experience while avoiding some of the worst warts in the system.

Sounds interesting, at our club we have a couple of Traveller fans but they mostly recreate the feel with different systems (like Savage Worlds).
I ran a one-shot a couple of years ago, made a big mistake by not giving the PC's pre-gens. So although I would have fun rolling the characters, one player got a -1 stat during their term and were not happy. So I let them re-roll, which in tern led to another player only being able to roll Artillery for his combat weapon group needing re-rolls. Which really cut into the actual session. Why they couldn't have just rolled with the punches; it was only for 1 session. Although in he end it turned out very enjoyable - even if we didn't finish it.

Yep, the character gen system had some issues. It was interesting creating your back-story based on rolls, but it was too much randomness (in my opinion). You never knew if you were going to end with the crackerjack pilot you wanted to play or (through crappy rolls) the guy with Liaison-6. :(
What I'm trying to do with my experiment is walk the line... where you have almost total control of your character build BUT there are those random events in the process that will tweak your character and flesh out their back-story.

Yeah, but it was awesome just rolling up NPC's for fun. I spent many an afternoon doing that rather than studying for school.
I think either a number of re-rolls or just telling the GM what you want and altering it after. Oh my friends played a game recently where you rolled up your character. Artesia. It sounded really interesting, but he had the wrong players.
