There was a version in the 1st Ed MM2, "The Hordeling", with random appearance and attack forms, to represent various minor denizens of the lower planes.

I believe this was revamped for D&D3.5, in "Maure Castle", but I can't recall if it was in the main issue, or one of the interminable extra levels.
How deep can you dig before the thing collapses round your ears? Have they reached the Earth's core yet?

At enWorld.org, there was a link to the Amazon blurb. It was in the WOTC news blog section.

I vote for a Fiendish Gary Gygax. I mean come on - Gygax. It even sounds like a demon's name. :)

Nope, "Gygax" is a Dragonlord.

(See SPI's Swords and Sorcery for more information about Gygax Dragonlord, Giant Killer Penguins, the Bottomless Plungehole, New Orc City, et al.)

Actually, all of these have already been done: Barghest MM, Eye killer (if you mean Ocularon) FF, Thunderbird Sandstorm, Air Spirit (Spirit of the Air) FF, Hecatoncheire ELH, Fossergrim FF.

New constructs like MMIVs Clockwork Steed, maybe adapted for dungeon/cavern/spelunking duty.

Was that the weapon-shaped daemons? I don't really remember either...

That might have been what killed the Maures - they fell into the molten core of Oerth on a digging expedition! Genius!

Actually a few have come to mind that I didn't previously mention.

Tribbles, Targs, Sehlats (all from Star Trek); Quintaglios, Forhilnors, Ibs and Tosoks from the novels of Robert J Sawyer; and new lycanthropes (weredinosaurs for example).

The lycanthrope template in MM1 is clear-cut enough that you can endlessly make your own. (Then again, goblins with class levels are clear-cut enough in MM/PH, but they made it into MM4 anyway...)

Hey guys,

Not to dash your hopes or anything, but I know a couple of the "designers" who worked on this project, so let's just say I wouldn't expect too much from this.

*COUGH* *COUGH* GGG *COUGH* *COUGH* TIM HITCHCOCK *COUGH* *COUGH* LOSERS! *COUGH* *COUGH!!!

Sad, yeah I know. Nobody cool worked on this book.

And who are you anyway? You remind me of that Neelix/Tuvok fusion creature from Voyager.

I have transcended myself...and Richard Pett. I am now greater than both of us...admittedly, that is not so great, but hey, it's something.

Ah, that makes sense. I'm not sure how wise it was for Wizards of the Coast to show off their mini for that so far in advance, but I guess they wanted to demonstrate its size compared to the Gargantuan Black Dragon.

But who did the stats for the giant frozen turkey?

Hmm...

But sadly, I've no idea whyever you gents would assume I would have anything to do with pineapples. Perhaps if it had been an enormous spotted dick mini, I would understand.

A suet-smelling ooze with a currant-spitting ranged attack would be pretty hardcore. ;)

Hmmmm...characters....monsters....a place with some guys...You're adapting The Lion, The Witch, and the Wardrobe to a module? Like Dungeonland style?

"Santa, I want a vorpal sword for Christmas."
"You can't have one. You'll put your eye out."
I can't wait.

Liberty's Edge

Hmm...golem, butler a.k.a. Lurch..."you rang?"
Cousin It (halfling with hirsutism template)
Or for that matter, Scion of Addams template
What's that, 49?
Writin' Monster Manuel's is hard work.

Liberty's Edge Contributor

The proper answer is along the lines of “Well, I do freelance for Wizards, but what I wrote hasn’t been officially announced yet, so I can’t talk about it.”

I'll take the ecology and new stat blocks.

Just please get rid of the classed monsters and maps. That, and make sure the monsters don't take up so many pages!

Hmm...
Dire Grinch
Jack Skellington,
Elf, Santa's little...
red-nosed templates....
okay we're up to 52 monsters.

Sovereign Court

Remembering the last reviews of WotC books at enworld.org I have one hope: better proof-reading of stat blocks. ;-)

Greetings,

How many xp. is that?

None. Everything in the universe is CR 0 if you worship the right god in Narnia. Your reward is that everyone else converts to the worship of Pelor, too, and then they pass a constitutional amendment outlawing human-elf marriages.

You gotta love the monster books, even if you already have 300 monsters you'll never use in a game who doesn't want to buy more?

I'd like to see about 75% original monsters and/or updates to 3.5 of monsters from earlier editions that haven't been handled yet.

I'd like not to see any spider/spider variants - we have tons of those already - Lolth must be so proud.

A few advanced monsters and their lackeys, perhaps in the form of a tribe, gang or other organization along with their lair and adventure ideas - ready to plug and play.

Some unique, Big Bad types. Something more than just a 20th level wizard or another demon lord like we have in Hordes of the Abyss/Dragon magazine articles. Again, something you can form a campaign around, or at least part of one.

Word! There are already enough to make "arachniphobia" seem positively lacking in camparison.

One potentially cool idea would be a section on "reworked" monsters, like Mike Mearls is doing with the ogre mage, beholder, etc. on the WotC web site (I love his variant rust monsters, with the nastier bite and climb speeds!). Aside from that, I'm with Heathansson that a lot of "old school" monsters need new, re-inspired 3.5e versions (not the bloodless straight conversions that EN world does--not to denigrade the hard work they do, but if I'm going to shell out for a hardcover book, I want a new take on some of the critters).

Liberty's Edge

Actually, I had this thing I came up with called a spider monkey...
I'm serious, it's a messed up puppy.

I want a Brownie! Official non-website stats for the brownie!

And I second the Arumnovorax.

Anyone remember the space faring, weapon wielding, eye ray shooting gibbering mouther things from second edition?

Finally, I love you guys. You make me laugh after midnight. Will I become a gremilin?
