Guin Saga is a series I got my hands on a little while ago. Has some very good classic Sword and Sorcery vibes going for it and more than a little Conan in it. Guin is a cursed warrior, with no memories of his past and his head transformed into that or a leopard. Unmatched in strength and skill at arms he becomes the protector for the royal twins who have lost their kingdom.

Plus we have a new seasons of simulcasts starting up. Most eye catching so far to me has been Nobunagun. Historical figures reincarnated and weaponized to fight alien invasion. Lead character is Nobunaga but others include Jack the Ripper, Gandhi and Newton.

What should I watch next....

Gunslinger Girl, followed immediately by Paprika and every Ghibli film ever made, because you'll need the uplift after all that pathos.

Oh Paprika!

I went into the theatre having a good idea what I was in for. The friend who saw it with me didn't know the mindf+@% that must surely result from a dreamscape anime, and he's never been the same...

Silver Crusade

Finished up Fairy Tail. Did not realize that it had ended last year, which was all the off-putting given how the last episode concluded. There better be more episodes coming.

Still haven't watched the latest Kill La Kill episode, but that's mainly due to the Fairy Tail binge I went on last week.

I'm also looking at the Attack On Titan OAVs... hopefully more episodes for this series are coming as well.

And Paprika was awesome. I recently watched it and Mazinkaiser SKL back to back. SKL was very old school and very metal. Loved it!

Paprika is actually an excellent anime to teach you how to run Dream-themed adventures.

I was actually using similar imagery in games when I did so before, but actually seeing it on-screen (though it was a small screen at home) was excellent inspiration as well.

So how was the Fall 2013 season?

Valverave the Liberator(Kakumeki Valvrave) Season Two started out well, but rushed to it's conclusion way too fast. Still crazy as ever, but didn't develop stuff as much as it needed to before killing a character off and/or moving to the next crisis.

Gundam Build Fighters continues to be the surprise winner of the season. The story has moved into the World Tournament, and are meeting and re-meeting many of the characters introduced in the first arc. Many surprises have come out of nowhere such as the Baseball battle and the fight against a Mega-size Zaku II the size of a man.

Nagi no Asukara is an interesting drama about a group of middle school kids who live in the ocean, and are forced to transfer to a school on dry land after their school closes down (apparently they were the only four students left). Off all the things I'd thought I'd see in an anime, Racial/Ethnic tension was not one of them. But this series pulls it off pretty well.

Kyosougiga was a short series about a girl with two fox spirits and a huge hammer moving to a very very strange version of Kyoto. Good story, nice action, very WTF-inducing when you start.

Pokemon Origin was a back-to-basics re-adaptation of the original Pokemon Red and Green that sticks a lot closer to the source material than the still-running original. Very well done, but also very short. Like four episodes long short.

Yuusha ni Narenakatta Ore wa Shibushibu Shuushoku wo Ketsui Shimashita(I Couldn't Become A Hero, So I Reluctantly Decided To Get A Job} is a decent comedy series about a would-be hero in an Urban Fantasy world who finds himself stuck out when the war against the Demon King ends before he could graduate. Now he finds himself looking for a job with few skills suitable for peacetime. He gets a job at a small department store, joined shortly afterwards by the daughter of the defeated Demon King, probably the only person in worse straits than he. I ended up losing track of this series after a few episodes, but I did enjoy what I saw and will probably pick it back up later.

A couple Non-anime:

Kamen Rider is a long-running (40+ years!) series about transforming superheroes that ride motorcycles. I enjoyed Kamen Riders OOO(Pronounced "O's) and Fourze, but ended up falling off during Wizard(though he had a cool design). The current series is Kamen Rider Gaim, which is so far a fruit-themed version of the Sengoku (Warring States) Period as fought in an ultra-modern city between rival dance groups. No, that really doesn't make more sense in context, but it's pretty fun.

Super Sentai is the original show that Saban made Power Rangers out of. One of the more recent season, Special-Ops Sentai Go-Busters, was a pretty interesting departure from the standard formula (they didn't even wear spandex!). But I may be biased as it as the only Sentai series I ever watched from beginning to end.

I am watching Space Battleship Yamato 2199 and so far it is very good.

Where are you seeing Yamato and Gundam build fighters????

Wait a minute-new Yamato or old Yamato?

Freehold DM wrote:

Gundam Build fighters is actually being released on line legitimately by Gundaminfo.com They are making a serious effort to introduce the model making hobby all over the world so they have gone to some effort to make certain their half-hour toy commercial is available to people. I'm actually considering getting a set for my nephew though he is more into model cars than robots.

For what is clearly a toy commercial the show is a lot of fun. It's got good characters and some fun writing even if the story itself is pretty formulaic.

and strange as it is to say, I'm hooked on the romance sub-plots. Seiji and China are so cute together and Reiji and Aila is coming along nicely.

This would explain why I couldn't find it through other means. Thanks man.

Just picked up an hg jesta cannon myself.

Are you sure that's a legit address? "Gundaminfo.com" gives me a sales/hosting site page. :(

*edit*

Found it.

en.gundam.info

My boyfriend has friends in the fan sub community. He frequently has stuff sent over from Japan directly. So yes this is the new Yamato.

2199 is awesome, even if you never saw the original.

Also, Nagi no Asukara (mentioned previously) has taken a turn for the dramatic. After Ep 13's catastrophic ending, the series skipped ahead five years.

I really want to see the new Yamato... I don't have contacts in the sub community anymore....

I do have the live action Yamato movie, though.. Loved it.

So... has anyone here been watching Space Dandy?

My boyfriend has... and he hates it. Which is more than enough reason for me not to waste my time with it.

I saw part of the first ep, interested in seeing the sub.

Silver Crusade

I've watched four episodes... and I'm still at a loss trying to figure it out. This next one coming up will be my fifth and possibly final episode to watch. Maybe I'll finally be able to wrap my head around it better with this one...

Magi: Kingdom of Magic took a turn that quite frankly I didn't expect and left a character in a bad situation that wasn't resolved before moving on to something else. I hope they get back to this one dangling plotline soon before too long.

Spacy Dandy has a lot of up front crazy fun in it, but the story kind of takes a back seat. It's one of those shows where the story doesn't come front and center until about half way through the season. Which is why I'm holding off and planning to marathon it later.

It's the shows that aren't hyped that I find are catching my attention this season.

Engaged to the Unidentified - Wonderful little slice of life show about a girl who discovered on her 16th birthday that her grandfather had arranged a marriage for her, and then has her fiancee and his little sister move in with her family. The very slow building of the relationship between her and the boy is actually really nice to watch.

Witchcraft Works wins best Ending Animation this season. The show is pretty fun with a nice gender role reversal for the typical Knight and Princess schtick

Silver Crusade

Looks like Toonami is getting Blue Exorcist this month and Black Lagoon next month...
And it would appear that Sword Art Online was greenlit for a new season that starts this year. Found out after watching SOA Extra Edition, which is kinda a recap special but has a side story dealing with a quest in Alfheim Online that may be a set up for SOA II.

Great news.

Thing about Grave of the Fireflies is that it's a companion movie to My Neighbour Totoro. Totoro was the movie he wanted to make, but as I heard it told, there was a push to get historical movies about Japan made at the time, so he also made Grave of the Fireflies, at least in part to be able to make Totoro.

Has anybody mentioned Log Horizon?

It has a similar premise to Sword Art Online but goes in a different direction, focusing more on how people would survive and live in such a situation.

I like Log Horizon. Having recently watched SAO, I felt it was lacking in various areas I enjoy, and feel Log Horizon has done a much better job doing a story I like.

I agree with you about Log Horizon being better than SAO.

I was surprised their wasn't more discussion about the show considering how popular MMO are on Paizo.

Hmmm I love SAO. I will have to raid my boyfriends anime library to see if he has Log Horizon... or watch it on crunchyroll in lower rez.

Gonna be some SAO and LH spoilers, so spoilered:

I'm leery of saying it's better, the two are definitely telling different stories. The main point of similarity between the two is that both are about being trapped in an MMO world and released around the same time. Sure, I prefer Log Horizon but SAO does have it's high points too.

For example, I would say SAO is more about Kirito's journey and the other characters revolve around him (as far as the story is concerned). In Log Horizon, while Shiro does seem to be the main character, the others seem more fleshed out and get more screen time. The lone wolf story generally bores me. In fact, I remember watching that first boss bottle in SAO and loving how they had to work together to defeat it and thinking this was going to be an amazing series. Then suddenly everyone hates Kirito and it becomes a lone wolf storyline. I almost stopped watching right there, feeling like the series just pulled a fast one on me. The series has other moments like that too, like the Gleam eyes (why does Kirito need to suddenly have a new skill when we coudl see some awesome interaction between him, Asuna, and Klein, maybe even work the other characters there in, take leadership), the holiday boss, and Heathcliff. All Kirito. But that's what the story is about.

Log Horizon is a different story. Shiro starts off the Lone Wolf, doesn't want anyone to rely on him. But as he goes, he finds he does have them doing so, and even forms a guild. Other characters are important too. Rarely is Shiro the one winning the battle on his own, but rather leads others to victory. Which is part of the story LH is telling.

There's other areas too. The whole mortality issue with SAO gave it TOO much realism in my opinion, whereas the resurrection in LH reminds you it's a game (though the suggestion of what death does take is interesting). SAO's game mechanics were present, but not all that often defined in the same way LH does. Plus LH kind of describes the terminology a bit better for those not as invested in MMOs. SAO's animation though trounces LH though, imo. Plus the action scenes are pretty darn good.

And now I'm beginning to drone on, lol. Both series are good, just in different ways.

I pretty much agree with your take on both shows.

from Shiroe buying the guildhall to latest reveal about Rudy this show has kept me guessing.

More LH Spoilers:

I caught on to the fact he wanted to buy a building, but with the amount I figured it was all of Akihabara. But the guildhall made a lot more sense storywise when that was revealed, and it was pretty awesome.

Dagnabit, now I want the next episode to hurry up.

I'm a happy boy! (Happy boy!)

Found out that Fairy Tail will be back with new episodes starting in April!

Also had the chance to check out Rave Master X Fairy Tail. I hadn't laughed that hard in a while. The similarities between certain characters (Gray and Musica, Natsu and Haru) was fun to see as they interacted with each other. Hopefully, that won't be the only time they cross over like that.

Just started Attack on Titan, and I'm not sure I can take Eren. Does he ever stop being whiny and annoying?

Record of Lodoss War... Magic Knight Rayearth... Fairy Tail... Vision of Escaflowne... Slayers...

I have a clear image in my head when someone says 'fantasy anime'. I'm sure a lot of you do too.

So why is it that when I looked at this one list of fantasy anime on YouTube that I see Death Note listed? It doesn't matter that it was number 10 on the top 10 list, what matters is that it was on the list at all. And the surprising thing is that that list wasn't the only one to do this.

Claymore... Berserk... Utawarerumono... Tears To Tiara... Bastard...

I think of these as fantasy long before I would Death Note. There's a look and feel inherent to the setting that determines whether or not a series is fantasy. Death Note, while clearly supernatural, is not a 'fantasy anime'. Blue Exorcist, by way of comparison, is.

Fate/Stay Night... Le Chevalier D'eon... Soul Eater... Sacred Blacksmith... Murder Princess...

Sorry... felt the need to rant. Geek rage subsiding. That'll teach me to watch YouTube list videos late at night.

Edit: Fushigi Yuugi... Scrapped Princess...

Sorry, had to name two more.

Just watched almost all of Tiger and bunny! Gonna watch the second half before the movie comes out with friends. One of my players in my kingmaker game is OBSESSED with the show, she even has tiger and bunny in the bathroom (hand towel set). Her husband, a fellow player, will be cosplaying legend at the movie premier.

1 person marked this as a favorite.

My favorite animes are in the 80's-90's, almost without fail, starting with:

Irresponsible Captain Tylor (which breaks my heart I didn't see mentioned in 9 pages of anime discussion, as it's surprisingly subtle and sly in it's storytelling, and the scene where he's playing wack-a-mole still cracks me up after more than a decade and a half of watching the series repeatedly).

Tenchi muyo (while I enjoyed some of the offshoots/follow-up series, the original is still the best IMHO).

Ranma 1/2 (gets my vote for the English only voice-acting in an anime I've enjoyed as much as the original).

Gundam (because.....Char is a badass). Golgo 13 for similar reasons.

Arcadia of My Youth/anything Harlock (for being an emo-looking guy who has a vulture as a pet, he gets the best things about what it means to be a man, IMO).

Riding Bean/gunsmith cats (because tiny female explosives experts had yet to become an internet meme).

Kimiguri Orange Road (cause it breaks my g~* d~%ned heart every time I watch the OVAs).

About the only "new" anime I watched recently that I really enjoyed was eden of the east.

Silver Crusade

You, Vrog, have a refined taste that truly marks you as a connoisseur when it comes to classics. Though I myself am not a Ranma fan, I know plenty others who are (my wife included) so I won't begrudge you that one.

And because you mentioned Bean Bandit, I'll even forgive Gundam (though you are right, Char is a badass). I've only truly liked Wing and the SD one, but I was watching Gundam long before they came along. I'll admit that I wasn't fully grasping the storyline at the time. I was an action junkie at heart back then. Now I'm an action junkie that appreciates a good story.

Got my leadership style from Tylor. Worked very well in any club or organization I've been a part of.

Met Tomino twice. Got his autograph. I love true, UC Gundam. I am tolerant of G Gundam. All others can go die in a fire. As Tomino himself said on the subject of non-UC Gundam "*sigh* Everybody needs to make money..."

Love everything Kenichi Sonoda has put out. Currently looking at the entire Gunsmith Cats collection, including Gunsmith Cats BURST on my shelf. Love it, Cannon God Exxaxion, and of course, the character designs for BGC.

Orange Road was ahead of it's time and VERY VERY heavy.

This reminds me that I can't hate on the new BGC, cause it made it okay to have priss be your fav (unlike the original series, which was really the Priss show).

Don't worry. I hate the new show enough for both of us.

I will completely grant that the original series (and the AD police series for that matter) had much better writing, and was more subtle in it's storytelling as a result. It made you question whether or not Silvia was actually a boomer, and if so, what that meant about a boomer that hunts other boomers.

Wow thanks for pointing out Log Horizon guys, I love it.

I will say this about Mobile Suit Gundam: Amuro Ray started the whole "angsty teenage mecha pilot" meme, which a small part of me will never forgive him for. Other than that, about as perfect a "power armor"/war series as you can get.

Eva could have learned so much from MSG, and instead chose not to.

I am LOVING Log Horizon. It's. Hack and SAO WITHOUT the ham handed romance plot.

say what you will about SAO, the 2nd season's villain, Sugo, was creepy as hell.
