Lot of newer stuff here, but I didn't see any mention of any truly old school anime (keep in mind I only read in detail the first 100 posts and last 48, but just skimmed then remaining 100)

Space Battleship Yamato / Starblazers (All three Arcs)
Queen Emereldas
Harlock Saga
Bubblegum Crisis / Bubblegum Crash / A.D.Police Files (Not the remake of BGC)
Vampire Princess Miyu (Both incarnations were good)
Venus Wars
Mobile Suit Gundam (not to be confused with Gundam Wing which is just awful IMO)

Macross / Southern Cross / MOPSEDA (the three unrelated series which Harmony Gold wove into ROBOTECH)
Macross II
Armitage III (the 4 OAV's, not the Movie)
Crying Freeman

and @ Tequila - My Neighbor Totoro gets better when you have kids. I watched it once back in the day and didn't care for it. I have two kids now and I finally get it. Same goes for the Unico series of movies.

I've enjoyed quite a lot of anime in my time.

The more recent series I'd found enjoyable are probably things like:

Hyōka was an excellent series based off of series of mystery novels.

Seikai no Monshō or Crest of the Stars depending on where you find it is a really interesting space opera. More naval battles then fast paced in parts.

Steins;Gate was an interesting anime involving a "mad scientist."

Honestly though it's just another type of media so there is a lot that's good or bad. You could replace Anime with Movie or Television Series and you'll have roughly the same amount of good or bad.

I'm just wondering how Leo missed every post I've ever made in this thread... ;)

How is that preview?

I enjoyed it immensely, for a massive online open-world third-person shooter. I look forward to the actual game when it releases on April 2nd.

Back on topic, Towanoquan is being shown again on Anime On Demand, as is Fate/Stay Night.

I've started watching Divergence Eve, after which I'll watch its sequal Misaki Chronicles. The fan service is a bit... much (almost all the women have enormous breasts and too small waists, training outfits are tankinis...), but the GHOUL (the enemy) intrigue me greatly.

I loved divergence eve. The cheesecake and the disturbing storyline were awesome.

Another thought, has anyone mentioned Seizan Eyes (3 x 3 Eyes) yet? It's a good if quirky little set of OAV's rooted in Chinese Mythology.

an old favorite.

Right now,I'm into Michiko & Hatchin aka Finding Paradiso,a wonderful anime by some of the team behind Samurai Champloo and Cowboy Beebop!
It's funny and shallow at the same time, just what I like!
Has anyone cited Planets?

First time visiting this thread so let's start with a favorites list in no particular order:

Clannad and After Story(Probably my favorite, I'm wearing the DVDs out heh)
Kanon
Utawarerumono
Tower of Druaga
My Bride is a Mermaid
Okami-san and her Seven Companions
Slayers (Seasons 1 thru 3 so far, still need to get to the rest)
Rurouni Kenshin (First anime I watched)
Persona 4: The Animation
Sword Art Online

I'm currently watching Little Busters (likely to be added to above list...Key is always solid), Maoyuu Maou Yuusha (pretty interesting so far but makes my head spin at times), and Sakurasou No Pet Na Kanojo (better than I thought it would be but not a favorite).

Silver Crusade

I've added Canaan to the list of series that I'm currently watching.

I'm also looking at getting into Fairy Tail as well. Does anyone know if this is a good series?

I like it, but apparently people that read the manga don't.

Warning: Starting to watch D. Gray Man and Fairy Tail at the same time may lead to the uncomfortable realization that Todd Haberkorn is everyone, everywhere, at any given point in time.

Silver Crusade

I'll take that into consideration.

Netflix has added (returned?) the second season of D.Gray-Man to streaming. They've also added a lot of Cartoon Network toons as well, including Samurai Jack, Dexter's Lab, Powerpuff Girls, etc... Blew my mind to see it all.

Silver Crusade

Man, I loved Samurai Jack! Really wish that show had done better. Now I have something to try to watch this weekend.

Well, something else to add to my list of things to watch. I need to find a way to make time.

Samurai Jack did just fine. It was solicited for 4 seasons/52 episodes, and it ran for that entire length. It did what it was supposed to do, which is not something a lot of shows can claim, in the US market. ;)

It's also still on the docket for a feature film, in fact.

I hear it's very entertaining, and I can see that.

IMO that still doesn't make it good. I like most of Arnold Schwarzenegger's movies. Again, most of them aren't very good, but hey.

It just seemed a bit TOO fanservice-y for me, even for anime.

I mean COME ON.

Silver Crusade

I enjoyed HOTD very much, and I'm not into the zombie craze. Fanservice aside, the real draw is the interaction between the characters. This anime does for me what The Walking Dead does for everyone else. But outrageous moments like what you see in that clip are fairly commonplace in anime, just not as memorable. Bullet time scenes are everywhere these days, so when they're that unique (combining it with fanservice), people will take notice.

If you haven't watched it, you should do so. Give it a chance. It's only 13 episodes (at the moment). What's the worst that could happen? You'll actually like it? Would that be so bad?

if not for the fanservice, the show would have gotten dark and apolitical too quickly.

I'll recommend a few that haven't been mentioned(unless I miss it).

Paranoia agent
Gungrave (kind feel like once upon a time in America, please skip 1st episode)
Devilman lady

If you like samurai and can stand violence & gore & nudity, I would recommend Shigurui.

Sexy commando gaiden & Mad bull 34 for humor. (?)

If you don't mind the art style, Kaiji may be a nice choice since you like Death note.

Haven't watched anime for several years now though...

A couple of Anime shows I Like and own.

Spice and Wolf: this is a really good show. not much in the terms of action but rich in drama and some merchant themes. perfect for any follower of Abadar! :) also budding romance between the two main characters over the course of the 2 seasons. the manga and novels are also good.

Utawarerumono: page is for video game but the anime has none of the H-scenes from the game. anime has a story line that caught my eye after the first few episodes with a huge twist to the story at the end that made the 26 episodes worth it. heavy fantasy/Ainu influence, worth the view. two things to note, 1. the people doing the animation changed in the middle of the show for a few episodes and reverted back. 2. DO NOT WATCH THE DUB! it's terrible, the sub is much better in voice acting quality.

Jing the Bandit King: this is the show that got me first hooked on anime and manga. the manga is very good and is in two series. the anime is only 13 episodes but also is pretty good.

I'll recommend a few more oldie anime.

Windaria
Please save my earth (the soundtrack for this cost quite a fortune now)
Nelo and Patrasche(it's a dog in Flanders. the difference is the teenager had been modified into a kid iirc)
Gall force eternal story (well, I liked its music when I was a kid)
Turn A gundam... best of the gundam series
City Hunter & Cat's eye
The five star stories
Space runaway Ideon ova (kill them all Tomino's finest work)
Armored trooper Votoms
Wolf rain
Onikirimaru (Oni slayer.. somehow there are some people on google posting obscene pics using the same name so beware if you use google. :( Watched this when I was a kid and my idea of what Oni is like basically comes from this series. There are only 4 episodes animated though.)

Hmm, since Tomino had been mentioned in this thread quite a bit, there are also Dunbine, Xabungle, L-gaim that might be worth a watch.

I probably should have done a list like all my friends did.

Oddly enough, most of the ones mentioned here are not familiar to me.

Oh, man. Mirage Wolf goes in for the kill on old-school with Windaria and Five Star Stories.

City Hunter, Cat's Eye, Space Cobra, Riding Bean, Gunsmith Cats... Aura Battler Dunbine, Heavy Metal L-Gaim...

What are we missing.

AH!

Tobikage! One of the first Mecha shows with nested-mecha combiners.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ninja_Senshi_Tobikage

My old school addition entry will be 'They Were Eleven.'
...and the old shogun warriors. Gaiking, Danguard Ace, Tranzor-Z, Grendaizer.
Original Dirty Pair
Black Magic M-66
Riding Bean(and later)Gunsmith Cats
Plastic Little
Dominion Tank Police
The Hakkenden
a LOT of my other old school favorites have already been mentioned.

Silver Crusade

You guys are seriously making this old schooler tear up from nostalgia.

Stop it!

My wife's looking at me funny...

Battle Angel Alita
Crimson Wolf
Gall Force
Green Legend Ran
Moldiver
Ranma 1/2 (more for my wife than me as I never got into it like she did)
The Cockpit
Ushio and Tora (I actually have the full second opening theme, "Kemono no Yari/The Beast Spear" on my IPod and I listen to it a lot!)
Yu Yu Hakusho

For your listening (and viewing) pleasure...
Kemono no Yari

I'm fond of saying that whatever you may think of the common Shonen tropes, Yu Yu Hakusho did them best.

Idiot hero? Check, but the hero's not a MORON, he's just not book smart. Lookin' at you, pre-Shippuden Naruto.

Tournament Arc? One of the more engaging arcs because of the cool fights and characters, especially Toguro.

Constantly powering up hero? Yes, but not to overwhelming extremes until the last arc.

And it actually tackled the "what now?" subject once Yusuke had won against the biggest bad at the time, which gives it brownie points for me.

Chuck in Trigun, Cowboy Bebop, and Outlaw Star and you've got the 90's in a can.

Honorable mention to Gargoyles, since it's technically not anime.

Also, I didn't know Battle Angel Alita was an anime. I played the Xbox game at a friend's house one time and never knew it was based on anything.

Silver Crusade

Battle Angel Alita (also known as Gunnm in Japan) is a great OAV that's only 2 episodes long. Rumor has it that James Cameron is a big fan of the manga and wants to do a live action movie based on the first four volumes. I hope he does so because as much grief as I gave him about Avatar, this would totally make up for it.

Oh and as far as Yu Yu Hakusho is concerned, you're right on all counts.

Wasn't that big into Trigun (the initial silliness was a big turn off for me, but I watched anyway. The music for that series just rocks!) and Outlaw Star, but Bebop... that's a whole other deal. Love it (also helps that one of my favorite anime composers ever, Yoko Kanno, does the music for it).

And don't get me started on Gargoyles... one of the best toons done by Disney and the show gets no respect from them whatsoever.

I loved Trigun, a LOT. The first 3 episodes gave a very wrong impression of the show, but from then on everything was great. It also kicked off the career of Jonny Yong Bosch as a voice actor (much like Bebop did for Steven Blum), which as far as I'm concerned is nothing but a good thing.

Confession time though, I've actually never made it through Cowboy Bebop. I keep starting into it and then getting sidetracked. Kinda frustrating.

Though I've (somehow) managed to avoid spoilers all these years, so that's good.

Gargoyles was pretty much my childhood favorite cartoon. Gargoyles, Power Rangers (MORE Jonny Yong Bosch!), and Walker: Texas Ranger, anyway.

Silver Crusade

As far as childhood cartoons go, you could do a lot worse. I grieve for the children of today when it comes to that very thing.

Anime wise, my all time favorite is Record of Lodoss War. I caught the first three episodes on Sci-Fi's Saturday Anime block and was hooked. I kept tuning in hoping they would show more of it but of course they never did (though I got to see other shows like Project A-Ko, Roujin Z, and Iria: The Zeiram Animation). This prompted me to go out and collect the videos as they were released. Took forever to get them all but that series was the first of many that became a part of my library.

The Lodoss TV series, while not in the same league as the OAVs, is worth watching. The opening sequence for that series ranks as one of (if not the best) in anime. Epic does not do it enough justice! I got to see it at an anime convention back in 2000 before its official release here in the states. That room was crowded (standing room only) and from the moment it started until it ended, you could literally hear a pin drop. Even minutes after it had finished, the room was still quiet as no one could believe what we had just witnessed on the screen.

To this day, I still get chills from watching that opening! And I was only 29 at the time....

Yeah, the kids nowadays have no clue what real cartoons are all about.

All time favorite, Bleach

Dark Archive

Ok here are some of my favourites (note some will be serious old school)

  • Venus Wars (first anime)
  • Tekkaman Blade I and II

  • Trigun
  • Kenshin (OVAs plus Tokyo and Kyoto arcs)
  • Wolfs Rain
  • Evangelion
  • Yukikaze
  • Gasaraki
  • Love Hina
  • Negima
  • Buso Renkin
  • Ghost in the Shell
  • Trinity Blood
  • Full Metal Panic

  • Tenjho Tenje
  • ...Holic
  • Soul Eater
  • Sacred Blacksmith

I went to Katsucon a few months ago and finally got to watching some anime again (so that my "watched and liked" anime list now has items on it past things made 10 years ago). I saw and liked...

Blood C: Apparently I am the only person in the universe who enjoyed this, but I did. Mind, the pacing IS absolutely terrible, but it was still worth getting through the whole thing. Still need to see the movie.

Tenchi Muyo: War on Geminar: I used to be a massive Tenchiverse fan and then really, really burned out on it, especially after the disappointing 3rd OAV to the original Ryo-Ohki series. I went in to watch this with low expectations. I ended up enjoying it. Some of the humor I feel like has gotten old, but I like the characters a lot, and while like all Tenchi series it's a harem anime, it's got some twists to it I like. I like the main character (Tenchi's half brother Kenshi Masaki) which is also rare. It's fantasy-mecha and the world build and mecha are also just cool. I haven't finished the series yet, so we'll see if my enjoyment of it continues.

Also caught a few episodes of Persona 4 (I think) which wasn't bad for the "elongated card game commercial" genre of anime. I really liked the premise actually.

I don't know. "Avatar: The Last Airbender" (though that's several years old at this point) and the followup "The Legend of Korra" are both very good cartoons aimed at kids.

My 5-year old son loves "Phineas and Ferb" and I find it pretty entertaining myself.

My son and I also watched our way through "The Spectacular Spider-man" (produced by Greg Weisman, who created Gargoyles) and are now working on "Avengers: Earth's Mightiest Heroes".

The other thing is the parents that grew up on things like Gargyoles, Animaniacs and Batman: The Animated series can share them with their children. (Though I agree that doesn't help the kids whose parents didn't have such great taste in their youth. :P )

This is going to be the Netflix generation in terms of childhood entertainment. Saturday morning cartoons are different and afternoon cartoons are gone. It's going to be up to the individual parents to create a cartoon schedule for their kids and share old favorites with them.

My son and I enjoyed watching the original Thundercats. He's also a fan of Avatar The Last Airbender. I'm not sure how he feels about Legend of Korra, but I love it. That said, he likes Spongebob too.

For every good cartoon aimed at kids like Avatar and Korra, you get a bunch of crap like Chowder and The Amazing World of Gumball.

I've seen some episodes of Phineas and Ferb and I find it to be a kid-friendly version of Family Guy. Not seen Spectacular Spider-Man (didn't know about it's pedigree, but now that I do I'll give it a shot) and I love Avengers: Earth's Mightiest Heroes. Most people don't like Ultimate Spider-Man but I find it hilarious.

In the end, I watched a lot of cartoons and anime growing up and I try to get my son to do the same. Animaniacs, Tiny Toon Adventures, Batman: The Animated Series, Gargoyles, Exo-Squad, Ronin Warriors, Sailor Moon, Dragon Ball, Ducktales, Tailspin, Rescue Rangers, Darkwing Duck. I watched all of these and more. But its rare to find shows nowadays that come close to matching up to those listed above, cartoon or not. And most parents don't even try, because they figure that a cartoon is a cartoon is a cartoon. One's just as good as another so long as they keep the kid glued to the screen and out their hair. There's a lot of twisted stuff out there that's disguised as kiddie fare and it just slips past the parental radar.

This one was for the original Xbox, so I don't think it was the same game. It was just called Battle Angel Alita.

And there are still quite a few good cartoons being made.

Unfortunately, their popularity won't keep them alive.

Young Justice, for example, I believe was one of the top rated Cartoon Network shows until they decided to f#%* around with the schedule and make it unclear when it was coming on again.

Then they canceled it after season 2 concluded.
