I think Hiro Mashima's work probably lends itself better to an anime format than manga, especially with all of the wacky hijinks.
Also, at the same time, it's a little weird, but that's got everything to do with the Voice actors. This isn't the first time I've heard everyone's voice by far, but, I have to say, it's a little odd how many voice actors Fairy Tail shares with Kenichi. I wonder if Funimation just really likes using those same voice actors over and over or something.
I also binge watched fairy tail while originally catching up. The Tenrou island arc in particular kept me gripped to the screen all the way through. Still, the show is a lot of fun.
I have tried to get into manga a couple of times but so far no luck. Even series that I really like the anime for just do not seem to work as well for me in manga format.
Funimation is where I catch my episodes of Fairy Tail. You can watch for free both dub & sub from the Website ( http://www.funimation.com/shows/fairy-tail/videos/episodes )but they have commercials. If you subscribe, the commercials go away but it is not really necessary. I like to watch the episodes in HD on my Roku so I subscribe.
For Fairy Tail, the different arcs showcase varying degrees of light humor vs very dark themes. I would state that Phantom Lord, Tower of Heaven, Tenrou Island, and Grand Magic Games are all pretty dark. Still, the characters grow from these experiences. Character growth is what makes a story more solid imho.

Unfortunately, Funimation requires a paid subscription to watch the dubbed episodes of Fairy Tail season 2. I've been watching them on other sites, but it's significantly more annoying as the quality can sometimes be suspect.

Ah. I decided to just get a paid subscription, cause Funimation has a metric ton of stuff I want to watch when I finish Fairy Tail.

If you want more of a Moon Split In Two thing, you have to go for Thundarr The Barbarian.
Which, come to think of it, the Technology Guide handily enables... ;)
My favorite is the Tick....
That poor moon just had a real rough time... and continuity was maintained on it. First some idiot tries to write his name on the Moon, only to discover that it can't fit.... and then the Galactus expy takes a bite for the road on his way out.

I'm one and a half episodes in, and so far it's very good!
Oh, no doubt. Like thejeff though, I don't know if that's why it's being phased out. I'm guessing that there's another reason, because this happens to other streaming shows, like Mushishi, which are 100% rated-G.
I'd love to know what that reason is, though.

atheral |

hmm...I doubt I'd rate mushishi G...there are some episodes which can be rather...graphic. And some of the topics covered are rather mature (the effects of Alzheimer's, death and other such things)
The answer to the question though is from what I can tell twofold.
Netflix picks up the rights to a show for x amount of weeks/months and at the end of that time period they either renew it or let it lapse. (This is the most likely the case when in comes to 1 or 2 season anime)
the other way they tend to do things (mostly for long multi season shows) are to cycle the seasons in an out of their catalouge.

I'm going to be sticking with themes, because music overall is just too much. (I'll arbitrarily choose 10, but I can't possibly number them...!)
- Inner Universe (GITS:SAC)
- Seventh Moon (Macross 7)
- Tank! (Cowboy Bebop)
- Yakusoku Wa Iranai (Escaflowne)
- Kiri (Ergo Proxy)
- Sea of Miracles (Lodoss)
- I'm a Pioneer (Tenchi Muyo)
- Cruel Angel's Thesis (Evangelion)
- Full of Memories (Ranma)
- Mad Machine (BGC)Freehold DM wrote:*Lynn Kaifun* that claims FIRE BOMBER!! is a rip off of their original music. Where's the hard question (unless I missed it)? ;) (Reading the liner notes in the various CDs are great fun, especially the Galaxy Network Charts.)
That's some good stuff there. Although if I'm being honest I still love Mad Machine to this very day and Bubble Gum Crisis had some pretty damn good music.
I have Angry Priss on my iPhone as part of my "need to get ready for action" music playlist. That along with Strong and Strike from Naruto and Blood War from Bastard! are some of my favorites.
I also cant NOT mention Giant Robo: The Day The Earth Stood Still Soundtrack in particular The main Title and Rush! Issei & Yohshi.

ShinHakkaider |

Giant robot music is also a staple of my ear's diet. Dangaio's opening theme and overall theme music is perfect. PERFECT.
Hajatasei Dangaio! Holy Crap that's a blast from the past.
I love true Gundam. But I have to say aside from the opening to Zeta Gundam, the music is lacking.
Which opening? I like both of them but the second is my favorite of the two. Man, that was my golden age of mecha anime right there. Between Zeta Gundam, Heavy Metal L-Gaim and Aura Battler Dunbine? Good times, GOOD TIMES.

Yeah, I figured it was something business-logistical like this. Thanks for the info!

I always have to keep in mind that the title of the anime is not always any help when trying to determine what kind of show you are about to watch. My wife and I tuned into Bodacious Space Pirates thinking we were going to see a fanservicey train-wreck and instead got a really good show.
I watched that one as well. The way the whole piracy thing worked was a little absurd to me at first, but I kicked that thought out of my head and really enjoyed it as well. Awesome show!!

Grey Lensman |
That was a badly translated title.
It was full of moe characters and fan service if you knew where to look, but it was a rather hard Sci fi show. Loved it myself.
The easily-found fan-service seemed to be in shout-outs to other anime series. The Serenity sisters looked suspiciously like Sailor Moon and Char Aznable (sans mask) , the challenge to get into Marika's house was lifted right out of Space Pirate Captain Harlock, and other little tidbits. But they thankfully avoided the most glaring fan-service (they had entire episodes with miniskirts in zero gravity and not one panty shot) and left most of it as a matter of context. (My wife was convinced that Chaika and Marika were on the verge of hooking up throughout most of the series).
On a related note, there is supposed to be a sequel movie coming out soon: The Abyss of Hyperspace

I have a wonder about Fairy Tail.
** spoiler omitted **
On another Fairy Tail note, episode 200 was a great way to close an arc. Sadness at the sacrifices needed for victory but yet hope for the future.
I also found Ghost in the Shell: Arise on Netflix. I enjoyed the first episode, but the storyline is very convoluted. I find that to be enjoyable, while a lot of people do not.
I am watching Full Metal Alchemist with a friend. Full Metal Alchemist is a much, much darker show than I originally thought it was.
As far as music goes, I got to see the original Bubblegum Crisis quite a long time ago. I was blown away by how much I enjoyed the music. I may have to find Bubblegum Crisis Tokyo 2040 to see if I like the music in there as well.

Just out of curiosity Freehold, what do you not like about BGC 2040? I actually rather enjoyed it. Well up to the ending which I thought was mediocre, but overall it was pretty good.
Everything.
That they made Linna the main character.
The awful music.
The character redesigns.
The hipster vibe the entire series had.
Ugh.

I didn't mind Linna being used as the main character in the reboot.
I didn't care for the revised plotline, and i felt the major confrontation moments didn't have the same impact or...depth(?) when they hit me.
I also didn't care for several of the makeovers.
I feel the music fell a good deal short compared to the original.
i was/AM a huge fan of the original BGC, and while i snapped up the remake, i ended it feeling...meh.

Hmm...the only thing I can really agree on is the music. But to each their own eh?
I thought that Linna was a pretty good viewpoint character, and of the four the most appropriate to focus on. Though arguably Priss is the actual lead protagonist. The character designs I thought decent, and actually prefer them over the old BGC designs. And I'm not really sure about it being hipster..never really been good at calling that one.
Then again I may be seeing it though rose colored lenses as it was one of the first anime series I bought and watched in it's entirety. I did find the story closure to be lacking in the last 3 episodes or so. Too many things not really wrapped up.

But when it comes to robots, anime and music, no series does it better than Macross. Over 30 years of amazing music in every incarnation. While my personal favorite is the music of Macross frontier (I love may'n and Maya Sakamoto!!! Yoko Kanno arranged/composed all of the music, to say nothing of the work Gabriela Robin put in!), the music of Macross 7 with its John Lennonesque main character with his peace and love soundtrack brings my friends together every time- even one who HATES giant robots is a fan. A friend recently went to a concert shelling out major money just to hear two songs by the artist who did the series. I liked only one song from Macross Plus, but it's Yoko Kanno- it's all good stuff.
As a contrast, it was accidentally hearing the soundtrack to Macross Plus that made me look for Macross in the first place. Voices/Myung's Theme is one of the most beautiful melodies I've ever heard, and I really enjoyed most of the rest of it. So I got Macross Plus, but figuring that I'd otherwise have no idea what anything was, I picked up the original Macross series (2008 subtitled version, I think there's a new English dub on it as well). Out of curiosity I got the Robotech version afterward, but I haven't watched that one all the way through yet. I don't have any other Macross titles, and the Macross Plus soundtrack is still one of my favorite albums to listen to. Now I'll probably give anything scored by Yoko Kanno a try.
Not Kanno, but I also very much liked the music from Last Exile. I see a couple people mentioned it. I put it on my gaming soundtrack for when I was running my Serenity game, minus the opening and closing themes.

wow. You think 2040 music better than the original?

I'll see your facepalm and raise you a DOH!
I had a chance to get a hi-metal (that's Die Cast core and extremities with heavy plastic panels and greeble for those of you who don't speak Japanese Mecha Toys) L-Gaim figure - fully articulated, full weapons loadout, wheels in the feet for that L-Gaim hover-skate motion, the whole thing. Itty bitty figures including the fairy, all of it.
And I passed it up for a second-tier Legios from MOSPEADA because at the time I was so completely in to Robotech you wouldn't believe.
I still have my old Lensman Brittania 2, somewhere, I think.
On the topic of BGC 2040, I think what I didn't like the most was that the plot was yet another "Look What Man Hath Wrought!" and a once-more-down-that-road view on the whole Biological Vs Artificial Intelligence, with a hefty helping of If It's Different, We Hate It on the side. And with an end-cap ending of basically "Yeah, whatever, I've outgrown your bull" from the not-really-a-villain... Mehhhh.
Original BGC was a story about evolving intelligence, yes. Boomers were artificial intelligence, they were used and seen as tools, and there was a not-so-subtle stab at bigotry and intolerance woven into the thing, but it was also a story of revenge, betrayal, and justice. When Largo/Red Eyes gets nailed, you feel empathy and relief for the Knight Sabers.
In 2040, I got no such empathy and no such relief. All I got was "Okay, so two of the Sabers have heart-to-hearts with their hardsuits and the world is cool, now? Well, wasn't that just Ponyo all over again?"*
I didn't mind Linna as the focus character - I thought that was cool. I missed the hard-driving lyrics of the original's songs. I felt the overall plot and ending were remarkably weak and over-used.
But none of that matters, you see.
Because a five year old loves a fish.
Anyone who knows me knows I am a Ghibli fanboy out the nose.
But not on this one.
World destroyed, but that's okay, because a five year old kid loves a fish. What the hell.

For the BGM, yes.
In fact, I can't even remember/think of how the original BGC BGM sounded like. At all. (Meanwhile, I can hum almost every song of every Yoko Kanno soundtrack, as well as the majority of BGC 2040.)
When I think of the music of original BGC, I think of all the fantastic vocal stuff. But the BGM...? Was there any BGM? (Which equals BGM fail in my book.)
